History: Tessa was born on March 1, 1987, to Rosemary Patricia "Pebe" Prower, a singer-songwriter. Pebe, a single mother, struggled financially while supporting herself, Tessa, and Tessa's older brother Lagan; they relied on welfare payments and food stamps to get by. When Tessa was an infant, Pebe would often have to look after her onstage while performing.
Pebe moved the family to Zootopia in 1991 after securing a new publishing deal for her songwriting. Pebe frequently brought Tessa and her brother along to recording studios when she noticed Tessa's vocal talent. Tessa attended two different high schools, but claimed that she didn't fit in, explaining that her unconventional style (such as homemade purple velvet pants and purple hair) didn't exactly endear her to other students. She played trumpet and saxophone in her school's marching band, and was a diligent student. After getting a near-perfect score on her SATs, she went to college but chose to drop out after three months to pursue a career in music.
In addition to taking songwriting classes, her mother also taught her to write songs, and would often write together after she got home from high school. Tessa began recording demos, which her mother would send out to folks she knew in the music business. Tessa was also in a band with her brother. Tessa and her mother co-wrote the song "Stephen" when Tessa was 16. She then tracked down a producer to produce it. She dropped out of high school at 17 after being convinced by a record producer to return to her hometown to pursue a music career, and earned her GED after. Around this time, her mother answered an ad from a reality TV series looking for an "eccentric" family to host a couple of wealthy socialites. The episode aired in 2005.
In 2005, at age 18, Tessa was signed to her first big label. After singing background vocals for another artist, she then signed with a music management company. She worked with several writers and producers while at the company and ended up co-writing an Australian pop group's single. While furthering her career in the studio, Tessa earned her living as a waitress. While struggling to get by, she began stylizing her name as Te$$a, explaining the dollar signs as an ironic gesture.
A few years later in 2008 she was an extra in a music video with her friend Catty Perry (one of the artists in Judy's iPod), and sang backup for Gazelle. The producer attracted the attention of a talent scout who wanted to sign Te$$a to another label, but the deal fell through due to her existing contract. The same year, she terminated her contract with the music management company.
In 2009 she appeared in a big rapper's number-one single, which gained Te$$a some mainstream attention. The collaboration happened by accident; she had simply walked into a recording session for the song and the rapper happened to have wanted a female voice on it. The rapper liked the end result so much that he recorded another song with her. Te$$a didn't make any money for the part. She also refused to appear in the video, telling a magazine that she wanted to make a name for herself on her own terms. After the single's release, her career started to take off. Te$$a signed a multi-album deal with another label. Having spent the previous 6 years working on material for her debut album, she began putting the finishing touches on it. For the album, she wrote about 200 songs. It was certified Platinum in the States and had sold two million albums worldwide by September of that year. In the following years she made more albums, and even had the best-selling digital single in history.
In January 2014 Tessa checked into rehab for bulimia, and began work on her third album, writing 14 songs. After checking out she dropped the dollar signs and returned to her birth name.
In mid-2015 Tessa was performing at a concert in Zootopia. During one of her songs, she suddenly fell down onstage, writhing and convulsing, and in some pain. Her dancers immediately came to her aid. Tessa got up on all fours, teeth bared, growling, snarling, and obviously not herself. Her eyes were different as well. Tessa then leapt into the audience and started attacking as they ran away in fear, mauling a deer who had tripped while running away. After attacking another audience member who was fleeing, Tessa was subdued by several tiger security guards. She was then rushed to the hospital, where she was sedated, strapped to a hospital bed, and monitored while doctors tried to figure out what was going on with her, why she had suddenly turned violent and attacked with no provocation.
Several months went by with no change in the singer's condition, and no luck by the doctors. Tessa was then moved to a different room she could move around in while still being monitored. Meanwhile, other predators in the city were starting to show the same symptoms as her: violent convulsions, unprovoked violence, fits of mania, loss of sanity and self-control, reversion to primitive instinct and animalistic behavior, before going missing. As the months went by, the number of missing mammals rose to 14.
After the missing 15 (including Manchas) were found by Nick and Judy, Mayor Lionheart was arrested, and Bellwether took over as mayor. Following Lionheart's arrest, more predators went crazy, and Tessa's friend Gazelle held a peace rally as the city descended into panic and chaos after Judy's theory that predatory biology was behind the mysterious outbreak. Judy returned to Bunnyburrow, wracked with guilt at inadvertently inciting fear and discrimination against predators throughout the city, as well as pushing Nick away with her press conference statements.
Following the discovery of Doug's underground lab and the arrest of him, Bellwether, and their accomplices, the true cause of the savage outbreak was revealed as night howler flowers, which have neurotoxins that cause severe, lasting psychotropic effects on mammals. Doug had been darting predators with pellets filled with concentrated night howler serum, making them go crazy. At the concert he had accessed the stage by posing as a stage worker, and hid behind one of the sets during Tessa's performance, out of view of the audience as well as Tessa and her dancers. He had waited for the perfect moment and took the shot.
Work soon began on an antidote, and all the affected predators (including Tessa) were treated and cured. After being cured, Tessa took a temporary hiatus from making music to go to therapy after finding out she had attacked several mammals at her concert, and had even mauled someone in her night howler-fueled rage. Tessa doesn't remember any of it, but has seen the videos and news reports online. The deer she mauled had to undergo facial reconstruction surgery from their injuries.
Tessa also made reparations personally with the victims of her attack, and most of them forgave her. The deer she had mauled was rather traumatized and initially didn't want to see her, but they too eventually forgave her. Even though the violence wasn't her fault, Tessa will never forgive herself for her actions that night.
During her stay in the hospital, much of her devoted fanbase (both in the States and around the world) stuck with her, and also forgave her after finding out about the whole night howler thing and that she was one of the darted predators, but some (mostly prey animals) dropped out from the shock of that night.
In 2020 Tessa returned to making music and continues to do so, slowly gaining new fans.
