Watership Down is, let me tell you, one of my favorite books. So of course I watched the movie - and I wasn't exactly disappointed.
Now, so many people quote eachother saying, "It was disturbing!" "It was terrifying!" "That movie scarred my childhood!"
Yeah, I can see why. Because they probably didn't read the book. They screwed up - they thought, "Bunnies," not rabbits. And that's what they got. The movie's animation was excellent. The movement was, for the most part, accurate. I raise rabbits and get to see them move daily and only two or three scenes seemed awkward - namely, the rats. That was sort of awful.
But otherwise, the animation was excellent. The story was kept to well and for the time allotted, it was fairly good at keeping the story compressed, but not lost. I would have loved to see Bluebell and Strawberry, and more Blackavar, but some sacrifices must be made, I suppose. I liked how gutsy the animators chose to be with the wounds and blood.
However, Woundwort wasn't as intimidating as he should have been, nor were the characters distinct in design. You could mostly identify Bigwig and Blackberry out of the group, plus Silver - that's the grey buck - and Holly. But the others all look about the same.
All in all, I loved the movie. It was flawed though.
