Alder is a brave,honourable rabbit.Watership Down is considered his home,but he feels like a stranger in there.He is haunted by his past,and frustrated about not knowing his origin.He is a pessimist,and often watches things on their bad side.However,he would do anything to protect his warren.

History

Alder was born in Efrafa to Captain Campion and a slave named Celandine.All of his siblings died shortly after birth,and he was the only one left.How Campion and other important rabbits showed no interest whatsoever in Alder,Celandine hid him and pretended he also was dead.

When Watership Down rabbits attacked Efrafa,Celandine found a way to slip unnoticed with her son.They went to high hills and lived a happy hlessil life.

Alder was two months old when he lost his ear.His mother left him for a moment when he played on the clearing,and a weasel got him.The weasel carried him to it's burrow,but some rabbits saved him and took him to their warren.Those rabbits,as he later learned,were Bigwig and Campion.

Poor Alder was very shocked,and completely lost his memory,only remembering his name.Hazel and Primrose took him in,feeling sorry for him.He grew with their kits Mallow,Gilia and Snowdrop,but they never raised him to believe he was their true son.They told him the truth as soon as he asked.

He soon befriended a shy buck named Littlewig,and a doe Blueberry.The three got along very well,and became best friends immediately.

Alder grew up into a strong young buck,but he was frustrated by not knowing from where does he come from,and not being treated as his adoptive siblings by other rabbits besides Hazel and Primrose.Mallow,Gilia and Snowdrop were know as „Hazel's children“,while he was know nothing else but Alder.He knew Watership Down was not his real home,and never felt home there.

He happily accepted when Blueberry suggested they go on a journey to find his parents.Litlewig,Blueberry and he went visiting different warrens and hlessil rabbits to find out if anybody knows anything about him,or who his parents might be.

Darkhaven was their first place to go.The warren was now more powerful than it was after the Black Rabbit himself stopped Woundwort and took his warriors.With a new Chief Rabbit and a fresh,strong Owsla,Darkhaven became the place to be afraid of once again.

The Darkhaveners greeted them warmly,and allowed them to stay as long as they want.Alder spoke for all three of them,but he often let them alone to talk to many different rabbits,including the Speaker of the Past.However,nobody knew nothing about him,and they soon left.

Some hlessil told them about Moss' warren,built in the remainings of Efrafa,and Alder decided they should go there next.Efrafa...He heard about that place in nursery stories Primrose told him when he was a kit.He really wanted to see what was left of that military place,with Woundwort now gone.

Moss' warren was a nice place at the first view.Strong,well managed Owsla and happy rabbits.Nothing seemed to be like the old Efrafa.

Moss-rah accepted them,at first carefuly,than warmly,allowing them to stay after he heard Alder's story about looking for his parents.He himself talked to Alder in private,and told him about some rabbits that might know.He also told Alder he reminded him of somebody,just didn't know of whom.

None of the rabbits Moss-rah told him to ask knew him.Periwnkle,a friendly and pretty doe,Moss-rah's daughter,also tried to help him,talking with the elders and other rabbits.Alder felt happy besides her,she just had a shining personality,ready to melt everyone's hearts,and soon leaving was unimaginabale.All he wanted to do was be besides her.

He met Moss-rah's mate,Heather,and Periwinkle's mother.She recognized him immediately,as a son of her best friend,Celandine.She told Alder whatever she knew about Celandine and him,and Alder found out he is the nephew of Primrose,his adoptive mother.He was surprised,but the biggest shock for all the three of them was the identity of his father.

Captain Campion,member of Watership Down Owsla,and father of Blueberry-was his father.

Poor Alder almost had a heart attack when he learned his father was next to him all the time,and the one who,along with Bigwig,rescued him form the paws of a weasel many months ago.

It was a shock not for him but also for Blueberry.Suddenly his best friend was his sister,and he no longer had no family at all.

Blueberry urged them to go home,and they soon went,with the news that will shock the entire of Watership Down.They left,but the whole way home,he missed Moss' warren.Periwinkle was there,and the whole warren seemed like a home to him,more than Watership Down ever was.

The warren was happy they were back,but the news of Alder's parents shocked everybody,including Campion.He obviously didn't know he had a son.When Alder told him what he learned from Heather about his mother hiding him,Campion didn't seem surprised.Apparently,his mother was proud,maybe too proud,and Campion didn't ever like her.

But,from that moment,relationship between him and Campion became awkward.The both of them didn't know what to do in the presence of another,and that led them not to spend any time together.

Alder missed Moss' warren very much,especially Periwinkle.After some time,he realised nothing keeps him in Watership Down anymore,and he left to join Moss' warren.

Moss-rah accepted him in his warren warmly,and Periwinkle was happy he was back.

Alder joined the Owsla,and he built his career in his new home,with Periwinkle as his mate.They had many litters of kits,and Alder finally felt truly accepted.
