Edelweiss' personality changes drasticaly through his life.As a pet he is quite lazy and cowardly,a bit plump and for that often teased by other rabbits.After joining Efrafa and spending time there,he changes and becomes a more honourable,dependable rabbit and learns the true ways of wild rabbits.

History

Edelweiss was born on a farm known simply as Hutch.He spent most of his younghood in a cage,with occasional trips to nature,in which he was also held in a wire fence with few other rabbits.Hutch didn't like other rabbits,especially bucks,who teased him about his plumpness and lazyness.He only wanted to run away frm them,to be alone and find a new home.

He slipped away unnoticed one day in his nature-trips,by finding a hole and biting it until he made it big enough to fit through.He was free.

Hutch wandered free for some time,until the night came.He had no shelter,and it is hard to know for how long would he survive if he hadn't come across an Efrafan wide patrol,led by Campion.Hutch was taken to Efrafa and put in a burrow with other rabbits who were captured or somehow lost the trust of the Chief Rabbit.It's unecessary to say how Hutch was terryfied of how brutal the Efrafans were,especially their leader,General Woundwort.From a young doe named Nelthilta he learned how rabbits of Watership Down came and escaped with some does that wanted to leave,and that the General was soon planning a raid back on them.Hutch admired those brave rabbits who were determined enough to defy Woundwort's tyranny.

Indeed the General Woundwort led a raid on Watership Down,taking Campion and some others of his trusted generals and Owsla memebers,but also leaving some so the other rabbits wouldn't run away.

Hutch used the time of Woundwort's absence for meeting with other rabbits and learning their stories,especially Nelthilta's.She was also a part of the escape plan,but foolishly gave it up and ended up being imprisioned and tortured to tell it all.Hutch felt compassionate for the young doe,and comforted her when she felt guilty for the fate of Watership Down.He liked her,she was a good company and a loyal friend.

He made friends with Hay-Oak,a buck with a missing ear and a tragic past.Hay-Oak was shy at the beginning,but Hutch was patient enough with him,and Hay-Oak opened himself and became his good friend.However,Hay-Oak was never very talkative,and Hutch realised he shouldn't bother him about his ear,or mentioning death anywhere near him.

Of the whole patrol that went on a raid on Watership Down,only Campion returned,wounded and tired.He told them that the rabbits of Watership Down let a dog on them who killed many rabbits,including Woundwort himself.A handful of those who survived were killed on the way back,leaving only Campion.

You can't tell Hutch was unhappy that Woundwort was dead,but he wasn't jumping with joy,either.You could say he was reliefed.

Campion soon became the Chief Rabbit of Efrafa,but far less cruel and military disposed.He let all the rabbits who wanted to leave,and made peace with Watership Down.The established a new warren,Vleflain,half Efrafan and half Watership.

When Hutch and Nelthilta were offered to leave,Hutch refused.He grew close to some rabbits,and knew Efrafa needed help now,with a drastic change of system and not so many rabbits,who were insecure and timid.

He took a new name to forgot his old life as a pet-Edelweiss,a flower his mother used to talk him about.Edelweiss became a close friend to Campion,sometimes advising him and helping him in the leadership over Efrafa.He became an Owsla captain,and one of Campion's most trusted rabbits.He sometimes controled Vleflain and helped Groundsel with his rabbits.

He and Nelthilta had a litter of kits,three bucks and a doe.The smallest buck,Leadwort,looked like his father the most,while Mugwort had the true Efrafan look.Edelweiss devoted the most time with his children with Mugwort,encouraging him to join the Owsla and training him to become the strongest.He was proud when Mugwort finally joined the Owsla and was sent to Vleflain.He heard nothing about his son for a while,but the news soon came that Mugwort died in a skirmish with an elil.However,Mugwort was not dead,but followed a much darker path...

Edelwiss and Nelthilta never found out about Mugwort's atrocities,and it is sure that if they knew,Edelweiss would take a look at other of his children,not only the treacherous son.
