He is a wolf. There are red wolves in the wild and gray or timber wolves come in all sort of colors like dogs. There are many wolf species including the Japanese wolf, which is red.

I have now. They are also known as the Abyssinian fox, red jackal, Simien fox, or Simien jackal. Native to Africa. Judging by its photo, its easy to mistake it for a simple fox. But by Karnage's bushy tail, I still think he's a fox.

Ever heared of the Ethiopian wolf? They are red.

...does say that Karnage is a canine, but that doesn't mean he's a wolf. Canines can refer to wolves, dogs, wild dogs...etc. I highly doubt Karnage is a wolf, for as far as I know there is only one type of canine with Karnage's colouring... a Fox.
