It was long overdue, but a few things are going to change on Animation Source soon.

As you may or may not know, the french side of the site has been running quite smoothly over the past years, but the same can't be said for the english side.
Which is why, the french moderators suggested to help and improve the english side, and they've recently dedicated a lot of time into it!
And here's their first task : "changing" the site rules! Actually changing is a big word, it's more : giving precise details and filling the blanks, the areas which were a blur for everyone.
You'll find the new rules directly in each section (fanarts, fan images etc...)
Also a few tweaks to the general rules, which you'll find here : https://www.animationsource.org/board/post14621.html
This is only a first step. I'd like to ask to let them do their job, and even if you don't agree with something, be aware that this is for the good of the site and for its success in the long term.
Stay tuned!

Nakou, you and the other French mods have our thanks!

People! The French moderators are here to HELP and still, all you do, or some, is whine.
They need to be thanked, not pestered.
Nakou, you and the other French mods, well done

" And frankly, I mean no insult to the French moderators and members, but I fail to see how having people from that side, exclusively, rewrite and dictate the rules here for the members of the English side if, by that statement I quoted, they don't understand the English side members and the many issues here, is supposed to be a good thing. No disrespect intended. Not at all."
Okay, so we should let your side in its mess? Sorry to be so crude, but that's it. We are here to help, to remember to people that's a FAN site, to give you strict rules 'cause you (the english side) always complain people don't find / know these rules... Will you be happy one day? Helping your side when our one is so "perfect and shiny" doesn't bring us anything... And you won't do better than us, just because you understand "issues" and all that stuff. In our side, many people come from different countries aswell. France, Belgium, Switzerland, Africa, etc. It seems you don't know our side better than we know yours. Easy to criticize, really. But you don't help the site at all in that way.
I don't put here mature fics and pics related to Talespin fandom and during creating OCs for my Talespin fanarts and fanfics I check out if its' species is allowed on this site. But I'm in the comfortable situation, because in Talespin world there are multiple species of anthropomorfic animals from all over the world. I've gotta then other problem: there are a lot of OCs which are bears, wolves, foxes, dogs, cats... OK, my Ora is vixen, but I tried to make her unique by design - ya know, in order not to copy Myra's / Katie's / Muffy's / Lotta's look. I beg other Talespin fans, who are here, to create rhino / stork / giraffe / mink / mouse / whatever you want OC...

And I know I've said all of this before. Ad nauseum. I keep wondering why nobody ever gets it. It's so painfully obvious. What's worse, it gets really exasperating, and quite frankly demeaning, to hear how "perfect" things are over on the French side. The French side is not the English side; it's much smaller in membership, and it is made up of people who all speak the same primary language. The two situations are entirely incongruous. To compare them, or to use one as a shining example of why the other is so inexplicably fraught with problems, is ridiculous.
And frankly, I mean no insult to the French moderators and members, but I fail to see how having people from that side, exclusively, rewrite and dictate the rules here for the members of the English side if, by that statement I quoted, they don't understand the English side members and the many issues here, is supposed to be a good thing. 1. You all speak the same language over there as a FIRST language;
2. There are far less members on the French side than the English side, spanning far more countries and cultures;
3. You each obviously approach fandom in a different way, on your side, than at least a certain percentage of members do here, regardless of the age differences, nationalities, cultural differences, language differences, etc. That should come as no surprise;
4. Many more members come here, to the English side, from sites having nothing whatsoever to do with fandom of the movies in question. They come from places like deviantArt, Wolfhome, Doll Divine, etc. to role-play and to plaster the site with art, renders and fan fiction...a lot of it of very questionable quality. And here, they are allowed to do so practically unopposed, because there is no active oversight, and what moderators who ARE active are only actually semi-active. And then there is the dead weight...people on staff not actually doing ANYTHING except taking up space;
5. steet is seen, by the great majority of members on this side, as totally disinterested in us, and in the many problems faced by us and this particular side of the site. Some of us (I included) have tried to feed him suggestions and viable options for resolving these many things. He doesn't respond. We've tried sending him private messages...all we get in response is silence (and then, eventually, frustrated excuses about how he has a life and that he has to prioritize. Hey - this is still his site, and he still wants to be the webmaster...that means there are duties to perform). We beg. We plead. We moan and groan. We complain. It gets nowhere... (continued...)

This is not a big deal, it's cause there is a lot of non related stuff. If we are not strick, this clearly become unrelated source. Just go on a random character page, image galery or fanart galery, you can see that there is way more creations which have NOTHING to do on a fan site than fan stuff =/ And this is why we have to apply those rules.
Plus, excuse me, but on the french side, most of the members are less than 15 and there were no complaining and everything is ok on our side. Why so much drama here ? We are just trying to help you ... If you don't agree with those rules, no one is asking you to stay. Devianart and many other sites/forums are open for all you unrelated stuff. You can also send it on the animations source forum if you want to show your creations which are not allowed on the site. I mean, this is not the only place where you can create your character/images/fanart/fiction etc ... Personnaly, most of my art is on devianart and not here, this is not a big deal if my wolf fursonna is not on Balto source
"So, only lions, hyenas, meerkats and warthog OCs are allowed on TLK Source"
No. Any animal appearing may be used so also girafs, zebras etc and to be honest, after all the things I've seen, I've seen only once or twice something else than a Lion...
And what to do you call creativity ? You can still imagine/draw/edit/write a lot of things with these rules, it's more than enough. Now sure, I'm sorry if you can create a dragon in TLK, so much for that creativity. I think there is still a lot to do here, more than enough.
"Wow, this is really going to lose you guys a LOT of your current members. But, hey, less work for you mods, right? Excellent plan."
Now this is extremely unfair. If you're not happy than please go, but I think it would be ridiculus. Or objective is not to have less work, or objective is simplify the mess here, and remain in the movies universe, these are the main purposes of the rules AND don't say it's less work to add a whole new set of rules, apply them, update them. It really is a lot of work (especially for Nakou and Hecate who put a huge part of their personal time for all of this). Finaly this dosen't change the fact that new rules or not, mods still do all of this volunteerly. I'm sorry that this may disapoint you because things change.
And you say these new rules are NOT meant to inhibit our creativity? Alrighty then! Wow, this is really going to lose you guys a LOT of your current members. But, hey, less work for you mods, right? Excellent plan.
=>New rules are stricter because it went much too out of control, there is no much choice here, and let's not forget that it's best this way in order to stay in the universe of the movies.
=>You can always put images or drawings you have done in a fanfiction as long as they obey to the same rules as any other image or drawing.
"The new rules seems to contradict themselves"
We have no problem with them on the french side, I don't see why there shall be some here.
One more question. Does the "no combining screencaps from different films" rule affect the renders/images used in fanfics, or just in the renders in the Image section? Some people use images in their fanfics to help make the story come to life, kinda like a story book. Can we still be as creative as we want with those images?
And...just for the record...I can draw.
tugalTCG
And yes, the new rules are stricter, but they're not meant to hinder in any way. Rendering in itself is somewhat illegal, because you're just tracing someone else's copyrighted image. If you're unable to render, learn to draw - which, and I speak from experience, is much more satisfying. The alternative to that is to have someone else draw it for you, which is mutually beneficial.
Stricter, yes. Hindering? Only if you allow it to.
It just seems like the new image rules are going to seriously hinder our availability of poses/backgrounds and put a major block on our creativity as well. The new rules seems to contradict themselves and other new rules and being a very active member on this site, I feel these new rules will cause the mods to deactivate many MANY of my images that I worked very hard on as well as other member's masterful creations.
engospel
However, using the Lion King as an example again, if one does create an African porcupine OC and wants to make a render of it with Simba or something (since all characters need to be used in a fan creation), doing that in and of itself would break another new rule that states that "all renders need to be created using ONLY the screencaps from that fandom's movie".
Since there are no African Porcupines seen in the movie, one would need to render over the porcupine from either "Bambi II" or "The Fox and the Hound", which would go against the new image rule, even though the character rule suggests I am allowed to make a unique character as long as it shares the same universe as the film in question.
So...I guess my new question is: are unique characters (not seen in the movie but share the same universe) only allowed in fanart or fanfic creations, or are there exceptions to cross-pollinate images from different films in order to create a fan image of my OC and an official movie character?
It's just that some of the new rules conflict with each other and I'm trying to get it straight so none of my characters or images get deactivated.

Blackravel : It it authorised if that character has a link with Balto (for ex : Musher, friend, master...)
While it doesn't specifically state swearing, one would expect it to come under either that rule or rule 18.

Hopefully these rules can be the start, and not the end, of the restructuring of how Animation Source is governed and moderated.
Thanks Nakou, Victor et al!

This rule has been created in order to avoid off-topic caracters. "he lives in the same universe as the one of the film " is enough to explain it all. It must be related to the movie. To retake the example of the Lion King, even if there are humans in Africa (duh XD) there are not in the movie, so making a human caracter in the Lion King would be off topic. But having a porcupine as you say, even if there are not in the movie, wouldn't be off topic, as there are many different animals in The Lion King.
Basicly, the caracter you create must be logic with the movie, it's as simple as that
"Your character can represent an animal different from the original character (the base you've used for it) on condition that he lives in the same universe as the one of the film (same country). For example, There can not have tigers in Lion King, the movie takes place in Africa. Plus, in the same movie, humans are not allowed. They don't appear in the movie. Moderators have the right to deactivate a character they believe is out of context."
I'm having a bit of trouble understanding this rule.
On one hand, it states that as long as your OC is native/living in the same country/universe as in the film, it's acceptable (for example: even though there are no African Porcupines shown IN "The Lion King" film, they are allowed because they are native to Africa).
However, the rule goes on to say that humans aren't allowed as Lion King OCs because they were not seen in the movie; although there ARE humans living in Africa. This contradicts the first part of the rule.
Can someone explain it to me? I might be reading it wrong....
