The stallion considered 'cursed' saw the mare struggling to contain two foals, and immediately cantered over.
''You look like you could use some help,'' Mercutio offered, only to be met with a cold, brutally loathful stare.
''I don't,'' she told him. ''Not from the likes of YOU.''
''And why not me?'' Mercutio asked. ''Am I not like you? I do so believe there's pride in your reasoning, and there is always a price to pay in pride. In fact, pride brings death. Just think: The fox sneers at the lower down animal, and the hound sneers before it makes the kill. The Bear kills to eat, and is killed to be eaten. The storyteller of fear is brought nightmares when he lays his head. Yes, mare, pride is punishing you! And the Barrens, who are punished infertile before they even must carry their first foal away to die. I've relived those moments in my dreams.''
Mercutio paused, realizing multiple horses had gathered, and fascinated, were listening to him as others gathered. Surprised flashed through him, but it turned to an advantage and he smiled deviously.
''And dreams!'' he continued. ''Yes, and dreams! You haven't learned what dreams come from, have you, foals? No, I thought not. So I'll tell you!
The nature of dreams is greatly unknown, but I, but I am an expert on such things. Dreams are none but the child of the idle mind!
And dreams are all everything you can want:
To the mare who wants a foal, it is her love and her child,
To the great champion, it is the lead stallion he protects.
The Cursed, to be one and the same!
The Chosen, a mare, a beautiful mare!
Occationally to the foal, visions of future granduer!
But do dreams stop there, at the humble horse? No,
A rare thing! Almost extinct! But I
can hear to the dreams of other beasts!
To the mule-deer's buck, it is his doe and herd,
To the lonely wolf it is a pack.
To the bear, it's warm sun, a den, a river full of salmon!
To the vixen it is her burrow, safe and warm.
The cougar, it's territory and simple solitute,
To the eagle and the hawk, grandeur beyond belief!
Yes, even the coyote,
I've heard it bark, yearn for a pack.
Yes, yes, yes,
I have heard it all!
Did you not know that all creatures may dream?
We all dream,
and we are all one in the same.''
Now Mercutio opened his eyes, breaking from his trance of kinds. He jumped. almost the whole herd had congregated, looking on with varying expressions from hatred to anger, to awe to even approval.
However, the Champion of the herd looked angry and unpleased with Mercutio's words. He knew the lead stallion was old now, and this stallion may as well have taken his place.
And now, he didn't approve of Mercutio being the bard that was in his spirit.
