BHB's Guide to Bays/Brown

BHB's Guide to Bays/Brown

Since I made a guide to chestnuts, I figured I might as well make a guide to bays too ^^

Bay: these horses are black based with the Agouti gene lightening the body and upper legs to anywhere from pale to dark brown, whilst the lower legs, mane and tail (points) remain black. If you see a brown looking horse with black points, it's a bay. If it doesn't have black points, it's a chestnut.

Light/sandy bay
The palest shade of bay. These horses can be confused for buckskins, but they don't carry the dilute gene.

Standard bay
The typical bay colour. The horse has a coppery brown body with black points

Dark bay
This colour can range from a dark brown to almost black body colour.

Blood/red bay
A deep red (blood red) body colour

Seal brown/Seal bay
There is a lot of debate/controversy surrounding this colour, especially since non horsey people often call any horse with a brownish colour 'brown', whilst they are normally bay or liver chestnut. Some people believe that brown is a distinct colour to bay; others believe it is just another term for 'dark bay'. There is growing evidence to suggest that brown, often called seal brown, is a genetically distinct colour to bay, and is identified by a dark brown body, black points and pale brown/tan areas on the soft parts of the body, particularly around the nose, eyes and belly. May also be called seal bay or black and tan.

Wild Bay
A bay horse with shorter/smaller black stockings on it's legs. This has nothing to do with whether the horse is wild or domestic; it's merely the name of the colour.

All of these horses were referenced from photos of real horses.
