The Rescue
Her first night out alone Bambi neglected to find shelter in a thicket or copse, but chose to sleep under the stars instead. By midnight a huge male grizzly bear had noticed the lone mare and decided he’d found an easy meal.
The night was cold, and a stiff breeze woke the sleeping mare. Opening her eyes Bambi came face to face with the approaching grizzly. Squealing in terror she scrambled to her feet and wheeled away from the lunging bear, who was anxious not to let his meal escape. An answering scream came from the hill above them, and all of a sudden a stallion was charging at the bear, hooves slashing madly. Unbeknownst to Bambi and the grizzly, he’d also been watching the sleeping mare, drawn there by her scent. The bear decided that it was far too dangerous to take on two healthy adult horses, and quickly disappeared into the woods. With a final snort in the direction of the grizzly, the stallion turned back to Bambi and chastised her for letting her guard down when she was alone and unprotected.
