Goodbye, My Sweet

Pacer knew the vaqueros would stop at nothing to capture him. One by one, his herd fell behind until only she remained.

He rubbed his head against hers, and whispered in her ear.

"I must go on alone. The humans won't give up until they have what they want. I can not risk your life, and I can not risk the life of my son."

His eyes traveled down to the shivering bay and black colt by the mare's side. Pacer swallowed his pride, imprisoning the tear that threatened to escape from his sea-blue eyes.

"Now, go. Go now and never look back."

The mare nodded, allowing her own tears to stream down her face. "I will always love you."

The mighty white stallion whimpered softly. Even he could only hold his emotions at bay for so long. He leaned in closer to her, feeling her warm breath on his neck for the last time.

"Goodbye, my sweet..."
