A scene from the book "Esperanza" when Esperanza witnesses Cedar and Strider having an argument, she fears that it would soon be time for Strider to leave the herd with his other siblings. She's worried because she doesn't want him to leave because he's one of her only friends in the herd.
Esperanza and Strider are probably around one or two years old at this point. Horses typically leave the herd around this time to look for other herds or are kicked out by the lead Stallion. Since Esperanza isn't genetically related to Cedar, she and her family would stay in the group.
I'm sure that Strider doesn't hate his father but is just being a rebellious teenage colt. And I'm pretty sure Cedar doesn't hate his son either but is frustrated with his attitude.
(I hope no one takes this the wrong way but they're just having a family dispute, healthy families do argue on occasion)
One thing I noticed while rendering Cedar was the mark on his face resembles a tree!
Cedar=Tree :D
