“Wake up! Let’s go or we’ll be late!” It was Wolf, Aleana’s twin brother, a mustang colt. “Mothers finally letting us go with her to the pasture to meet father today!” Wolf whinnied excitedly.“Calm down you.”It was Espian, their mother, answering with calm, laughing words. They awoke and started their journey to the pasture towards an oddly, paint colored mustang stallion with a cresent moon shaped battle scar on his left flank from an old battle with a wild stallion a few years back. He was very powerful but tame for a ranch horse. The foals ran with great speed towards their stallion mustang father.“ Whoa Espian! Quite some foals you’ve had!” Their father neighed with tremendous delight. “Why thank you Zephian!” the mare said, dignity, shining in her ice blue eyes. The foals were playing around in the new pasture to their small minds. They had found the salt lick and were talking to some of the older foals while licking the salt. Espian and Zephian were talking about the foals’ futures. They had heard their owner talking about having to sell the colt and filly. That’s when the one, all the horses call ‘owner’, came with the two small, brown, leather halters to haul the foals away. Seperated for what seems like forever.
I awoke from the dream of the foals’ unexpected departure. The distant trumpet had awoken the other horses from the stable. The Colonel was trumpeting the horn to a rhythm played only every-day in the cavalry. I had been brought out by her soldier and been saddled for the days training. We have been training every day for 2 years. Only now had I remembered a stallion mustang. They were saying yesterday that it was time for new horses. I had remembered the heard of the well known, Spirit, who they had failed to capture many times. I was distracted by these thoughts and was almost in collision with a young, paint, stallion, just her age. “Aleana! Pay attention!” the stallion named, Lasso, had said, half angry half blushing. “Sorry Lasso!” I said without seeing the paint’s delicate ears turn a strange shade of red. I was suddenly pulled by my harness to a line of other horses waiting to leave for new horses. I was mounted by my soldier, Damian, and galloped out towards the canyon barrier. I soon was rushed towards a herd of wilds, lead by, Spirit! I soon galloped as fast as a mustang could go, dust springing up behind me, I saw another mustang rear in front next to spirit and rush towards us. He stopped, reared, making me stumble to stop, and run with the herd. We managed to get a single rope around the stallion before he jerked away, rope still around his slender neck. We had captured a mare, and two stallions for keep. I apologized to the horses and we lead them back to the cavalry for breaking in. But something hung with me that brought the same dream to my mind, who was the stallion?
“That was very brave Wolf. Not many stallions would do that for a herd.” Spirit said to the mustang. “That means a lot Spirit. Thank you."I walked over to my spot under an apple tree in our claimed field in the wild. I wondered why the mare I reared at looked like me. I was reaching for a ripe apple that had bloomed a day ago this spring when I was startled by a mare, dun, mustang, calling my name. “Wolf what are you doing? I was distracted from grazing by that amazing jump! You even got the apple none of us could reach! You must have a legendary paint mustang for a father! The best jumper of the breed!”the mare named Saphian exclaimed excitedly! “I can’t remember my family Saphian.” “Oh! That’s terrible!”neighed Saphian in a soothing yet awed voice. With that, I nuzzled the mare thoughtfully. She gladly nuzzled me back. I had found my first mate but still wondered “Who was that mare?”
“Where are you Wolf!” Aleana heard Wolf answer but couldn’t hear clearly through her own whinnies. “Sis! Sis!” Wolf desperately cried to his sister. Wolf was so frightened by this that he slipped the halter and ran straight for the door. He jumped incredibly over the wooden bottom door of the barn and kept on running. Aleana, on the other hand, was too frightened to move and was brought into a big red trailer, harness and all. She was brought to a big fenced in corral for auction. She was bought by a place called the cavalry, where other horses lead her through the desert like a wild. She was broken in by someone called the colonel, who saddled the year old mare and drove her till she was broken in. She was now a cavalry horse. Wolf kept on running. He was tired from running full speed for very long times. He was found by a mare, Rain, who brought him to Spirit. He was raised wild along with other colts in the herd. A long way away from Aleana. Or so he thought.
I was awoken yet again by the proceedings of the dream. Trumpets blared again for the day to come. I was only a step closer to knowing the stallion look-alike of me. I had realized that the stallion was named Wolf, the colt in my dreams. I needed to know who the filly was though. I was saddled for training again but before I was mounted, Lasso came and had the red ears when he approached. “Hey Aleana? I want to know, do you like me? Even just a little?” Lasso asked, obviously embarrassed about some-thing. “Why Lasso? You know of course I do!” I had neighed to him politely. “Well, will you be my mate? Please, Aleana?”Lasso asked, his ears turning redder than a cherry. “Well, Laso, why not. You’re a sweet mustang and any mare would be glad to have you.” And with that, he jumped, bucked, and neighed in great joy. I nuzzled my new mate and went off to the line waiting for new recruited horses to be brought in. I was surprised to see one horse in particular to my likings. Wolf. He was bucking wild while being tied to the H shaped post. He saw me and suddenly calmed. I wondered why he had stopped. He mouthed to me, “Who are you?” very quietly. I didn’t mouth back , for the colonel had pulled me away. I heard the usual startled neigh of his mane being cut and the mark being burned in his fur. Murphy was going to get the shoes to put on his feet when Wolf bucked Murphy on his face, after seeing the big metal shoe coming towards his hoof. I saw an eagle flying over head, noticing that that was what had driven Wolf crazy. I suddenly noticed that the eagle was a sign of escape for me. For us. I waited in my stall that night. I had heard that Wolf was as wild as Spirit at breaking and was put on the post, no food or water. When the guards where all asleep, I opened my stall, my natural skill, and went to Lasso to help him escape. We walked towards the post, very silently, and Lasso asked why we were helping Wolf. “I don’t know. Something is connecting our pasts, but I don’t know what. Lasso agreed and we walked towards Wolf. We rose Wolf he was so startled, he almost got us caught.
“What are you doing!” I shouted. A single light turned on at the colonel’s cabin, but soon went off. “Shush! We’re escaping!”the broad shouldered mustang mare shouted at me. I gladly let the mustang stallion, apparently her mate, break the rope. I thought about my mate, Sephian, waiting for me to return from my journey away from the heard. Spirit had told Esperanza to watch over the mare, for me and her were having a foal. This mare and her mate was the mare that I had thought looked like me, a solid black coat with a moon shaped, cream colored, marking on her head. We also both had ice blue eyes. The only difference was the star on me was a moon instead on her. Her mate was a broad, paint colored, mustang with a scar on his muzzle that encircled his nose. I followed them out of the camp and we all ran. There was a new fence put up that was locked at night due to Spirit’s escape. We must have all had paint mustang blood, for we all jumped clear over the fence. We found a cave in the woods to hide in. We just fit in the cave, but something made us panic. Lasso has scented a big cat, maybe a cougar. We quickly spotted a flash of tan fur. It jumped out at us and landed on Aleana’s back. Lasso, knowing Aleana, reared at the cougar, it having to jump off of Aleana. I landed on the cougar’s back, crushing its head and spine. We got rest, ignoring the cougar’s carcass, and ran out of the cave in the morning. We reached a hill-top with an apple tree, not far from mine, a mile away. We journeyed on and reached the small cliff, overlooking the herd. Sephian ran towards me, her belly swollen even more from my two months away. She was now 8 months in foal. I still didn’t know the name of the mare who rescued me and brought me to the heard. Esperanza came up to the two mates and asked them if they would like to join the herd. She’d consulted Spirit before about joining members, and he gladly accepted. A few months later, Sephian had foaled. A beautiful baby girl with ice blue eyes and a solid black coat, but the coat had a strange white moon on her left flank. We named her Asali. Right after Sephian had Asali, Aleana had become very fat. Esperanza had said she was to foal soon. But that night, the dream I think is a mystery, falls into more detail.
“Zephian! Zephian!” Espian
