Love is Pain A story written by Amare

As Rain and I raced through the forest, fleeing from the man-made fire, I dared to look over my shoulder. The raging fire was gaining on us. I desperately looked around for a safe place, but I only saw trees. As we galloped on, I finally caught sight of a lake. I nudged Rain in it's direction. When we got there, Rain lay down on the banks, burned and exhausted. I looked at the flames, standing protectively in front of my mare. I didn't see the flames coming the other way too. I reared up, my hooves stabbing the cold air. Rain let out a cry of pain. My head whipped around, and I saw the falmes licking over her body. I stared into her blue eyes, then rushed to help, but by then it was no use. I caught one last glimpse at my beautiful Rain, then she disappeared. her feather from her mane landed in front of me. I took it, then walked away, tears flooding my eyes.

The next day, I was feeling guilty. I visited my old friend Little Creek. He knew at once I was upset. I showed him the feather.

"Rain?" he whispered. I nodded. He gasped and stood up. "Where is she?!" I sadly shook my head and looked to the sky. At once, he got it and kneeled on the fresh grass, breaking into a fit of tears. I lay next to him, pinning my ears and blocking out the choked sobs. I closed my eyes. Everytime I close my eyes, I see Rains death over and over again. My eyes snap open. Once little Creek calmed down, i took him to the place she died. I remember we were grazing in an open pasture, when we saw some cavalry soldiers lighting trees on fire purposefully. It was there fault Rain was dead, and I was going to avenge her.

I left Little Creek by the lake and bolted off in the forts direction. My eyes were burning with fury. once or twice I thought I saw Rain galloping next to me, but I blinked hard and she disappeared. I held back the tears, but didn't stop. Once I reached the fort, I reared up, hitting the lock off of the two big doors.

I heard shouting all around me as I stormed into the fort. I went right up to the colonel, snorting angrily in his face, only making him smirk.

"Where's your precious pinto mare?!" he spat. I reared up in rage, my hoof making a deep gash in his forehead. He gasped, falling backwards, a few soldiers catching him before he hit the ground. The Sargent sneaked up behind me and slipped a rope around my neck. I reared up again, breaking the rope and pinning him to the ground. Yet another soldier shot at me. I jumped off him, a smile working at the corner of my mouth as the bullet hit the Sargent. He cried in pain, then lay still. I then approached The Colonel again. I looked up, seeing 20 or more soldiers surrounding me. I closed my eyes and gulped, about to give up. I thought I would see Rains death again, but instead, I saw all the happy times we had. When I saw her and I in the lake swimming, sharing an apple, racing back to the herd and kissing, I smiled. Opening my eyes, I felt strong again.

I got my revenge on the cavalry and turned to the herd again. When I returned, my mother Esperanza was almost in tears with worry. The last time I saw her was before the fire. I told her about Rains death, and how I avenged her. After I had finished my tall tale, mother introduced me to a new mare. She was cherry bay, and very beautiful. Her blazing amber eyes shone as she saw me on the hill with mother. I looked at her, awestruck. I then looked away

"No" I whispered "Mother, I don't want another mate"

"I won't have you alone, darling" she replied. I exhaled deeply

"Mother, I'm happy. I don't want another mare. She's very beautiful, I know, but it just doesn't feel like it. I feel like I'm chea-" she cut me off

"Please? If you don't find another mare, and make a foal with her, the herd will die down with no leader" I sighed.

"Fine, I'll go talk to her" I mumbled. Before she could say anything more, I approached the mare with a warm smile. "Hi"

"Hello" she replied, her voice calm.

"Whats your name?" I asked

"My name is Sun" A weird thought came to my head. Sun, Rain. Two beautiful mares, so alike, but not alike at the same time. "Are you ok?" she asked, sounding a little worried.

"Yeah" I said, even though my mate had just died and my mother is attempting to get me to mate to another one "Perfect" She nods

"Good" I let out a long sigh. "Your not ok, are you?" I nodded. "Why?"

"Two days ago, me and my mate got caught in a fire. She was killed in the fire. The next day, I set out looking for revenge, since the fire was man-made,by the cavalry" she winced at that word. "I got my revenge, and came back here"

"Well I don't have the perfect live either" she saw me frown and sighed "I have an older sister. She was always the favourite, even though my parents wouldn't admit it. Once my father died, her and her mate kciked me out of the herd, mothing doing nothing to stop them. So, I came here. ALong the way, I met a handsome stallion named Tiger. I fell in love with him, told him my story, and he left me. I arrived here, and your mother told me I would be the perfect mare for you. But, please don't get offended, I don't want to be with you" I smiled a little

"Neither do I, but.." I was interrupted by a red stallion.

"Sun?" he asked. Sun looked around.

"Tiger!"

"I'm so sorry Sun!" Tiger ran to her and kissed her. I smiled at them

"Go, you deserve to be with him." Sun smiled and nuzzled me in a friendly way, then bolted away. I sighed, lying down on the hill. I closed my eyes, seeing Rain and I. A smiled crept on my face, and I fell asleep, under the stars.
