Freedom: How he got lost and who saved him

~ ~ ~

The herd moved slowly, in search of water and food, along with a safe place. Rain was taking the front of the herd, and Spirit was taking the rear. Freedom walked near the center of the herd, next to his beloved sister named Morning Arrow. Freedom slowly strayed away from the herd, about 5 feet from it. He walked 5 feet from brush, bushes, and trees. A bush to his right began to rustle. Freedom tipped his head oddly and began to walk towards it curiously.  As freedom neared the bush he heard a growl come from it. Suddenly Freedoms heart raced. A cougar leaped from the bush, claws extended, mouth wide. Freedom squealed and scrambled away, tripping and falling on his face.

To the sound of Freedoms squeal the whole herd stopped and looked in his direction. Freedom had gotten to his feet and was racing away, the cougar hot on his tail, both of then bounding away.

Morning Arrow released a loud whinny to her brother as Spirit raced away from the herd and towards the cougar. Spirit whinnied threatenly, making the cougar stop and look at him strangely. Spirit reared before the cougar and kicked out his front hooves. The cougar yowled and jumped at Spirits under stomach, hoping the attack unexpectedly. Spirit leaped away and bucked at the cougar, knocking it off its feet. Spirit turned to face the cougar and reared over it. The cougar scrambled to its feet and began to flee for the bushes and trees. Spirit chased it for a few paces then stopped and gave a victorious whinny. Spirit turned back to the herd, his eyes scanning each herd member, looking to see if anyone was harmed. Thankfully, no one was harmed by the cougar, but someone was missing. Where was freedom! Spirit tossed and turned, looking for his son but failed to find him.

Soon, Spirit, Rain, and Morning Arrow had to think the worst. Not that he was dead, but lost. And what follows being lost? Death.

What happened...

As Freedom raced away from the cougar, he heard Morning Arrows whinny along with his fathers, but he never stopped. Freedom ran and ran, as far away as he could get, his eyes wide with fear, his heart racing. His hooves pounded the ground hard, kicking up clumps of dirt as he bounded along. Freedoms coat soon got slimy with sweat. Freedom soon could see the glimmer of a pond in the distance. He raced towards it. He would stop there.

From behind a bush a yellow filly emerged, not seeing Freedom. Freedom dug his hooves into the ground, trying to stop himself from colliding with her, but he couldn't. Freedom slammed into the filly with a squeal, the two tumbling to the ground.

As they fell to the ground together, the filly pulled herself out of the mess and stood, watching the exhausted Freedom lay there. The filly lowered her head and nudged Freedom, asking if he was okay. Freedom picked up his head and nickered thankfully to her. When he met the fillies eyes he stopped. The filly took a step back to give Freedom room to stand up. Freedom scrambled to his feet and looked at the filly with wide eyes. The filly lowered her head, telling him she was not going to hurt him. Freedom nickered at her, and the filly lifted her head. Freedom looked into her eyes again, which sparkled in the sunlight.

She was beautiful. Freedom thought. The most beautiful filly I have ever seen.

The filly began to walk to the pond, and when Freedom did not follow, she turned and nickered to him. He nickered back and began to followed. When they got to the lake, she nickered again at Freedom. Kacey, Freedom thought. That's her name. Freedom nickered to her, his eyes concerned. Are you going to leave me, Kacey? He seemed to asked. Kacey shook her head, neck and mane. No, She was saying. As Kacey bent her neck down to drink, Freedoms eyes lit up with hope.

I've got a friend, He said to himself. whose never going to leave me, no matter what....

And with that, Freedom nuzzled her neck thankfully, then he lowered his head with her and drank. When Freedom lowered his neck, Kacey lifted her and nickered to him again. Freedom lifted his head, his muzzle dripping, and looked at her. Come on, She seemed to say, then began to walk away from the lake. Freedom nickered to her but did not move. Where are you going? Kacey stopped, turned back, looked at him, and nickered. It is okay, just come, trust me. Something told Freedom to trust her, even though he barely knew her. So Freedom took a step forward, then began to walk. When he reached her, they both looked each other deep in the eyes. Kaceys eyes smiled at him, then she started to walk. Freedom walked right next to her, they shoulders rubbing together. Kacey nuzzled him and he nuzzled her back. Freedom knew he had found someone very special, someone that would change his life forever,

Kacey took Freedom to the Lakota village and took him across the plains. Freedom didn't know what she was doing, she told him she was helping him find his family, but, was she really? Freedom was not sure, but he went with her. She protected him, he protected her. They stayed together threw think and thin, no mater what came their way, they fought it together, never leaving each others side, falling more and more in love every second. Freedom knew she had changed him forever, but he was scared. What would happen when he did find his parents? Would they accept her? He never knew with his father and mother. They were unpredictable.
