every night that one day the buckskin would get punished for what he did to him and Eve, no matter what. The stallion might do good in his life, but this was it.
Charlie struggled up and began to slowly walk back to the brush for he was laying a few minutes ago. Once he got there Twilight was falling and he laid down, swishing his small tail and throwing his head to shoo the mosquitoes and flies. Charlie looked up at the sky. It was dark and full of stars. He blew out in a sigh and stared at the sky. There it was! I shooting star! Charlie followed it and begged silently. Please... He begged. Please let the black foal be okay and released from the wooden prison unharmed.
And with his request sent to God, he laid his head down and would be able to doze, and as he laid his head down and closed his eyes, he did so.
Chapter 5
Eve looked up as she heard a small stir from the young girl. Eve lifted her head and looked at the girl. She had begun to walk towards her. Eve was so tired and did not move. The girl untied her rope from the post. Eve stood as the girl slowly led her to the gate. Eve hung her head, a tired sway in her step. The girl opened the gate. It creaked, making Eve jerk her head a bit. A breeze ruffled her mane as she looked up. Eve breathed in deeply and let out a sigh. What was this girl doing? Was she freeing her? Eve looked at the girl as she untied the rope around her neck.
“Go,” The girl said plainly. “You’re free.” Eve took a step forward, then another, never breaking her gaze at the girl. “Go!” the girl said a bit louder, gently swatting Eve on the rump. Eve let out a small whinny the burst in the a canter. Her canter was stead as she ran about 5 paces, then stopped and looked back at the girl. Eve uttered a soft nicker, then turned and cantered away once more.
“There’s something different about that young filly,” The young girl said as she watched the foal canter away and soon out of sight. “Something not good, but something good.” And with that the girl turned on her heel, closed the gate, and returned inside the fort.
Charlies ears perked up as he heard the pound of hooves. He scrambled to his feet as he watched a small black figure canter across the dry dirt. His ears perked higher.
“It’s her...” He whispered under his breath.
Charlie started into a slow canter. He stayed far behind Eve, but his eyes never left her beautiful black hide, which reflected the moonlight.
Eve slowed, and Charlie matched her pace. She slowed to a stop, her breathing slightly labor. She turned her head slightly to the right and saw Charlies ghost looking coat in the moonlight. Her heart suddenly began to race. She jumped around and faced Charlie, her eyes wide, her chest heaving. Charlies heart raced with happiness as Eve met his eyes. She is so beautiful, Charlie thought. And I feel her pain.
Eve took a step backwards, and Charlie mimicked her, taking a step back when she did. Eve tipped her head, confused. Charlie did the same. Eve snorted and shook her head, lowering it as she did so. Charlie snorted and pawned the ground. Eve squealed and laid her ears back, her body suddenly tense. Charlie took a few steps back and lowered his head apologetically. Eves whole body was telling her to run but her mind told her not too. But her legs told her to run and next thing she burst into a galloped and was running away.
When Charlie lifted his head he watched her run a few paces then matched her gate and followed her.Charlie followed her, threw valley and plains, across rivers and mountains, and Eve never noticed her follower.
