Legend walked to the ridge to view the land Spirit had last been seen on. She missed him. Legend heard Esperanza approach her. "I miss him too." the old mare said, Legend sighed. Everyone missed Spirit and Legend was becoming more and more certain that the only thing to do was go and find Spirit. "Do what you must, my daughter for you and Spirit are destined to be entertwind wich may either lead to a happy future or disaster and sorrow." Legend snorted. "what are you a fortune cookie?" which confused Legend for she didn't even know what a fortune cookie was. Esperanza replied, "I don't know what a fortune cookie is, but when you become old you learn to listen to the wind and hear it's words. Perhaps it's the spirits of our ancestors, or perhaps it is actualy the wind sighing it's wisdom to us old ones." Legend stared at the stars transfixed in her mothers words.
Legend set out the next morning. During the night she had decided to go find Spirit and bring him home, Esperanza did not try to keep her in the land but simply nodded and said, "One who often seeks to help another often ends up helping themselves." Legend was beginning to think that Esperanza had realy gone crazy. Legend said her goodbys then turned to run off in the direction Spirit had gone. Soon she came across strange objects and the reamines of an oddly contained fire. Then she caught the scents of Spirit and of......something that Legend had never in her life smelt. A small claw of fear clutched at her stomach as she realised that she had no idea what she was up against, if Spirit were alive or if he was, how she could save him if he had been caught by these things. Legend moved on and eventualy she decided to get some sleep so she walked a little further until she came across a larg bush beside an ancient tree. I guess this is as good as it gets, She thought. The she drooped her head and went to sleep.
Legend woke suddenly, she reared and snorted in terror as she felt something tighten around her neck. Legend pullen savagly against the thing but couldn't break it. It was then that she heard someone say, "This one would be a good breader." Legend rolled her eye toward the source of the sound and stilled for a moment. The speaker was small and rode her own kind. It also used it's front hooves to hold a long thing around other horse necks. Legend didn't stop thrusting for long in fact she doubled her yanking attempts when she caught the weirdos' scents. It was the same scenting as the ones that Legend smelt around the contained fire.
Legend soon realised that it was useless to thrust against the things that resembled a snake. 'rope' the two legs had called it, and what a rope it was for all of Legends musceles and body weight couldn't snap it. So Legend plodded along like an obediant little jackal who has been stripped of all freedom. Suddenly Legend had the feeling of eyes boring into her and she looked around to find a handsom bay horse starring at her. "What? Dont touch- no make that, dont look at what you can't afford." And with saying that Legend tossed her tail and raised her head, trying to obtain as much dignity as possible. After being defeated, it wasn't much.
That night when the travelers- five two legs and as many horses, were resting in the desert under the scarce trees, The bay that Legend snapped at earlier in the day approached her and stood looking at her. Legend couldn't help but notice that he was out of kicking range. "So enjoy the trip? You got to see a damn lot of country side." The bay smiled.Legend sighed, why do stallions always have to small talk females? she thought to herself. Not waiting for an answer the bay continued cheerfully, "Well it's still a long way until we reach the camp so you'll get to see plenty more. My names Iron Will by the way." He added and again Legend sighed then replied in a sardonic, "Your a regular ray of sunshine aren't you?" Legend walked closer toward the contained fire but had to be caught by Iron Will as she tripped over her hobbles. He chuckled softly and walked along beside her. "So what breed are you?" Legend asked as she took in his lean body, far shorter coat and his size- which was a foot or so taller then herself. Will replied,"Oh, some sort of desert horse or rather. I'm only here because my homelands humans across the water, decided to fight these people and as a foal they caught me and involved me in their 'cause'." Will's voice remained cheerful but Legend saw the flicker of anger in his hazel eyes. Anger fueled by sadness and, to Legends surprise, she found that she had anger boiling over her soul because of Iron Wills' sadness.
The next day the small group moved off at dawn break. Legend trotted along beside a murky grey, her breath coming out in white-ish trendils. The grey turned his head toward Legend and smiled. Legend ignored the gesture, rose her head a little higher and lifted her knees higher as she trotted gracefully.
Legend looked down at the camp with disgust. It was hideous. Smoke rose from triangle shaped shelters and the ground had no grass on it what so ever, the horses all had markings and ropes on them and the two legs were EVERYWHERE! The two legged leading her tugged on her rope and Legend moved fowad absorbing the air around her and frantically summoning her sixth sent- the sent that could always warn of unseen dangers or watchers. The two legged tied Legend beside some young untamed colts and walked off forgetting the baffled palomino and pouring himself some strong ale.
Iron will plodded up beside Legend and started chatting casualy to the colts. Legend flicked her ears backward in annoyance but, although Will say the movement, he grinned and continued talking, perhaps even louder then before.
Legend rested her head on the horizontal plank of wood that was keeping her tied. Iron Will was beside her sleeping, or so Legend thought. Legend sighed in boredom and shifted her weight from hoof to hoof, usualy at this time of night when it was not too hot or too cool she would be unning but not tonight. Will decided he was done 'sleeping' and said suddenly in the silence, "You know you don't talk very much, i onec knew a guy who never spo....." As Iron Will continued talking Legend stared at him with her mane flopping messily over her face then shouted, "Dont do that! You scared the hell out of me!" Iron Will wore a mask of mock confusion and Legend rolled her eys at him.
Three months Later.....
Legend sighed as she saw the humans coming to try and break her again, then she heard a horn and the humans turned to bolt back to the camp. Everywhere Legend looked the humans were shouting and mounting their horses. Then Legend saw other two legs the same colour, running toward the camp, waving battle axes and screaming. Then a brown shape pulled out of the startled figures. It was Iron Will. "Legend, jump the fence! Please atleast try!" Will shouted frantically. Legend looked around her at the fence. It was a meter taller then her! Legend sucked in a deep breath and backed up, preparing to attempt a jump. She bolted forward and pushed her hooves off the ground.
Halt yawned as his rider- the colonels son, saddled him for a early morning scout. Beside him his friend Solitude was also being saddled, the greyish white horse seeming to be a rock still ghost in the dim morning light. "Mornin' sunshine." Solitude said in his strong confident voice. Halt grunted in reply and lowered his head to try and doze off while his rider sqabbled with his farther. Emmett was a good kid, well young adult, but he never agreed with his farther (and doesnt look like him lol). Halt drew himself upright as Emmett swung easily into Halt's saddle. "That kids got too much muscle and exposed skin." Solitude said, Halt grinned and replied, "Well what can i sy? My owners a ladies man, much like myself." Solitude snorted and trotted off elegantly. Halt eyed his riders unbottened shirt, mabe SD is right Halt thought.
The two scouts and scout steeds walked up the mountain side slowly, making their way to a large rock that was jutting out of the moutain side but had grass and trees growing on it. The scouts sat on the rock chatting happily while the scouteeds sat with their legs folded beneath them, acting as back supports for the riders. "......Naw dad is driving me crazy he's always going on about the clothes i wear and about settling down y'know? but, i don't know, i geuss that this, i mean camoing in the bush, riding my horse all day it's what i want to do forever." Emmett told his friend. The other scout began, "Well why......." Halt tuned out then and looked around, he'd heard it all before.
Halt and Solitude stood before the lead horse and lead scouteed, then the lead horse spoke, "Soldiers we have summoned you here to assign you to a mission." The lead scouteed stood straighter and cleared his throat, "Your mission," He interupted, "Is to win over the new dun stallion so he may be tamed." Solitude frowned and Halt looked at his hooves. No one likes to take away the only freedom horses have in here. The freedom of choice. But commands were commands, now the lead horse was speaking again,
