I'm a bit confused by the term 'mate' here on the Spirit Source
To me, 2 characters who are mates would only be with each other. For example, a male and a female fox might be mates, or a male and a female swan might be mates, but horses (and other herd/pride/pack animals) don't really work like that.
Sure, the mares in the herd would probably only mate with their stallion, so in that sense he'd be their 'mate', but the stallion would mate with all his mares, so wouldn't they all be his 'mate'? Or does 'mate' mean primary partner, in which case the stallion's mate would probably be the lead mare of the herd?
So, what do people mean by the term 'mate'?

As Serpentine said, the term "mate" here is used to talk about a love
interest. It is true as you stated that pack animals don't really have
mates, there's a lead male that has mating rights with the other
females of the pack but here "mate" follows the movie line too. Rain
is Spirit's mate. Spirit wasn't shown to have other love interests,
only her, acting as a couple, thing that wouldn't happen in a real
herd. |

just a a general word of SS Mate isn't thought of technically like
that around here or on the other sources. Here "mate" is used as a
term for a significant other in general aside from a simple crush.
When some says "may i make him/her a mate" they are asking if they can
make the character a love interest that is able to have foals with the
character and is an important object of love to said character. |
