Ok, use Gimp 2.8. When I render, I just use the bucket tool, and I use he pencil tool to fill in the pixels. However, I want to revert over to trying to get smooth lines. I heard it's a lot of hard work, and time consuming, but I'm willing to put in the work.
But how do you create a layer to make smooth lines?
Also, how on earth do you create curly/wavy manes and feathering on horses's hooves?

To create a new layer on Gimp, go to the top of the picture box where the tabs are. From left to right they should be 'File', E'dit', 'Select', 'View', 'Image' 'Layer', 'Color', 'Tools' etc.
Click on 'Layer', and a drop down bar will appear. Click on 'New Layer'.
Now go over to the tool panel on the right of the screen , called 'Layers, Channels, Paths etc'. Click on your new layer, go up to 'mode' and choose 'multiply'. You can now draw over/colour over your image. When you're finished, go back to the 'Layer' tab and click on 'Merge down'. This will enable you to save your image.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you're still struggling, and i'll try to help you out.
