Story
Arnoux was born on a equestrian barn, during falls season. Both his parents were equestrian competitors for Horse Show Trials. Lycan was a dressage horse and Granger a cross country horse. His father was, most of the time, strict around his son. Telling him how to compose himself, to have class, how to be proper and how certain things are too childish for a show horse like Arnoux, even though he was a small colt learning and experiencing his surroundings and enjoying his young life. His mother would scold him when he hasn't eaten or ask him if he has eaten, but if anything, she's a caring mother and supportive in what his son would do or encouraging him. Granger was like his favorite show horse hero. He enjoyed seeing her in action when she did her cross country trials and admired the way she would jump the obstacles. He even asked Lupo, the family dog (Italian wolfdog) and support dog during the trials, to help him be as good as his mother. It infuriated his father, when he knew his son wanted to be like his mother, when he wished that Arnoux would follow in his steps. Granger tried to calm her mate, reminding him that their only colt could choose whatever course he'd like to participate.
After his first year of surviving the world, learning how to jump and run as fast as his mother, the owner of the equestrian ranch thought it was time for the young horse to start a real training and see if he could find someone who would pick him during the junior trials to be his rider. While looking for someone to partner him with, the owner was training colt to in dressage first, like his father, but wasn't successful. He was too clumsy, and would miss or mishear what he should be doing. Then, show jumping. Neither. He would miss a jump, due to running too fast, or trotting too much. The junior horses would make fun of him and called him "Broken Clock" Arnoux, except for two young colts who were his friends, Slingy and Dancer. His mother would take his side and remind him to believe in himself. Arnoux didn't know what to think about his self-esteem or confidence. The family dog tried to boost up his young friend with belief in himself, which made Arnoux feel slightly better. Next, it was cross country. Arnoux had a bit of small mistakes but got through. After 4 months of searching for a rider, the owner found a teen who was a rookie in Horse Show Trials, Nash. He had his mix feelings about horses, but he had to get along with the gullible horse. On their first training together, the communication problem was Nash. It was either he would tug on his reins too much, kick his sides when not necessary and at times, slap his rear to get him going. Arnoux felt he was too tiresome and too much. He has never met a disorganized human before, he felt uncomfortable. Granger was worried; Lycan would put the blame on the young male. Lupo didn't like the human boy and would bark at him when too close. When came the Junior Trials, Nash was doing what he would do during training, but Arnoux had other plans in mind and did things his way. He had forgotten about Nash, and got through the field course without having to be told what to do. Nash and Arnoux ended in 4th place and that was enough for him. Lycan infuriated, when they got back at the ranch, and almost went physical with his own son, that they were stopped by Lupo. The next trials that came, with improvements, Arnoux and his new rider started to get along and 2nd place became their best position. He was proud of himself and so was his mother and his godfather.
On the next upcoming falls, Nash had taken Arnoux for a ride on one of the trails near the ranch, and was telling him where to go. Once reaching a clearing, Arnoux spotted a race track for horses. They were saddled up, and the riders were dressed oddly. He couldn't understand it, but slowly took the feeling. He wanted to do free, no obstacles, no point marks. No judges. Just running. Nash had a part time job there and had access. When one afternoon of training came to break time, both ran to the tracks and sneaked into the race. When the race practice started, Arnoux ran fast, he was close to taking the lead; everyone was in awe, not knowing who were the newbies in the race. When reaching the finish line, both had to pull back as a guard told him to get off the track. Him and Arnoux made a run for it and went back to the ranch. The young horse later at night spoke to his mother, the new sport he discovered. Granger wasn't agreeing on the new discovery he's made. Then she explained the sport and how it was risky. He promised he would stop and will not try to go back. The next night, a storm was coming and all the horses were heading back inside the ranch. Arnoux was looking for his mother, until he saw that her station was empty. The young stallion ran back, his partner tried to stop him, but the stallion was worried about his mother. Lycan and Arnoux went to search for her, even taking the trail. It wasn't long before he found tracks leading to the forest, a foal came running to them, telling them that Granger was trying to help her from falling down from the waterfall hill and they quickly rushed to find her. The young stallion was shocked and horrified at the sight he found. His mother was badly injured. Lycan rushed quickly down the hill and went to go by her side. Arnoux neighed for help, hoping that someone came to help, since he didn't want to leave his mother's side. The dam then called for him, as she was slowly starting to feeling weaker and weaker, he did as he was told and shared love to his mother one last time before she had shut her eyes and stopped moving. Arnoux had started to run to head back to the ranch and bumped into the owner, Nash and a small search party. The owner saw the body of Granger laying down on the ground, near the water and checked her pulse. She was gone. Arnoux was sad; he had lost his hero and mother.
It was gloomy at the ranch, since they had lost their best cross country horse. Arnoux hasn't left his station. He had participated in a few trials and with 3rd or 4th place. His father couldn't look at him anymore, instead walked away from him, from his life. Lycan had disowned him. The only one to be around his sides was Nash. He was helping him to feel better and to get back on his feet, but Arnoux would just look away. Lupo, noticing how his godchild was acting stood up and tried to wake him up. He told the male that he could even visit his mother's station and her winnings stand whenever he wanted, since his mother was now watching him from above and is in his heart. When Nash came to pay him a visit, they both agreed on going back to the race tracks and signed up to join. Nash had secretly took some equipment for the race. Once it all began, Arnoux had won 1st place. and it kept on going for the next couple months. Arnoux was in one of the stables, until he heard a commotion from the outside of he ranch. The American Cavalry men had arrived, for an exchange with the owner and responsible of the stables. The stallion didn't know what was going on, and already didn't like the Cavalry men. Some looked mean, some too odd feeling. He had a weird feeling in his gut that it wasn't right. When the hostler had introduced Arnoux to the men, one particular man had an eye on him. Johnson, who was admiring the horse. He would've done whatever to take the horse and tame it as his. Arnoux glared at him and madly snorted at him. Johnson had walked up to the hostler and asked if the horse had a price. The stableman had refused to sell the race horse, for he already had an owner. Johnson then had a plan and bribed the poor groom, giving Arnoux, who would try to buck and kick, not wanting to be given away and leave his homeland. Nash had arrived and tried all he could to gain his horse back, his only friend, ready to fight to get him back, but one man, Miller had told him that if he continued further, that he could be arrested or either stop what he was doing, before it could get worst. Nash, not wanting to go to federal jail or thinking of the worst that could happen. Given up, he looked at them, disappearing with his partner, not knowing what to do.
The road to the camp had taken a long time. Arnoux had gone tired during the travel, since they hadn't stopped the trip. Three other horses knew what was coming to them and took everything calmly. Arnoux didn't want to go to a place where he has to do what he's being told or having a harsh rider that thought of him as only a steed for war. Half way to the Cavalry land, Arnoux returned to his bucking, kicking, neighing and defending himself. It took 4 men to calm him and having to stop his antics. He was taken to a groom, young Murphy was ready to take care of the horses. He had the men tie up the horses to the posts and started to groom them. Arnoux didn't like his look. Horseshoes that were hurting him, short mane and the U.S. mark on his shoulder was still burning him. He felt he was melting along with the burn. He was put in a stable, where different horses were there. He got to know the horses in the stable and learned that some were from the west, some of ranches and others were either locla horses for their town or of Native tribes. The next day, in the afternoon, the men were going to break the horses who were rebellious and were about to be broken. Arnoux was last to pass. He was the most rebellious, except for when it came to Johnson. He had a whip with him and would at times use it to make Arnoux obey his orders. The stallion was injured, even though he had stop bucking and rolling, he was won over by Johnson. And so, he was claimed as Johnson's horse. The next few weeks were practicing a Cavalry charge, march trotting and obeying his handler. Though the charge wasn't his strong suit, he would run fast and run pass the Colonel and the other men, doing what he wanted and would head to the forest to escape, but would fail since Johnson had his whip. In the winter, he had a hard time to get along with the horses who were serious and strict to be part of the Cavalry, except a horse, who used to be a Sheriff's horse, who always dreamed to be free, but be at home around humans. Arnoux partnered with the horse, named Bucky. They even planned their escape during feeding time, practice and dressage.
A year passed and Arnoux and Bucky were ready to flee. Arnoux and Bucky were about to be strapped up and ready for war, but they rebelled against their handlers and ran away by escaping the gate's doors. Once they ran away, not realizing that they could be tracked down, Arnoux lead Bucky to where they could see snow covered grass and leafless trees, taking that path and were about to cross a river that could take them away and loose the men. But Bucky didn't agree and they both started to fight. Arnoux had lost and was pushed into th river, as he swam away in his injuries. Not knowing how long he had to swim, he noticed the river was close to be ending, noticing the cascade, causing him to fall down. After surviving the fall, Arnoux rested after getting out and laid down by a bush. It was clear to him he was about to die, as he closed his eyes, and decided he would relax and stay as he is. What felt like hours, the stallion woke up surround by horses keeping him warm, a fence circling them and that has enough space for them. Along with that, he spotted teepees. He was thankful to be rescued but also confused n who saved him. He decided to wait until he could be able to walk. The next morning, the male woke up to apples next to him and a soon-to-be chief was standing next to him. Arnoux felt shy around the man, but reassured as the colored man pet him and whispered him words of kindness. He ate and then decided, along with walking with the man, to discover more of this new world. He found interesting. Horses painted, elders speaking of stories and legends, or having a good time, kids playing and men and women dancing to the sounds of drums and instruments he's never seen. He neighed in content and played with the small children, even letting those tall enough to climb him.
After adjusting to this new lifestyle, he was part of the herd of the tribe and finally felt home and at peace. Even enjoying the stories being told to him about Bonita, which he was fascinated by and always loved hearing about what she was like and being around the Eagle and challenging him in races near the tribe.
Even if at times, the Cavalry were coming after them, he stick with the natives, defending the tribe. To this day, he swore to protect the people and stay at where he now called, home.
