History
Born the eldest of Sgt. Adams and his wife Anne, Paul's home was Mill Town, which lay 2 miles from the Cavalry Fort.
Paul grew up looking after the animals of the Adams' homestead, and from a very young age he was in charge of rearing the family's meat; usually cows with the occasional drove of pigs. He was a very hands-on lad, and his father taught him as many practical life skills as possible. Of all his skills Paul knew how to drive the family wagon - the family didn't own a horse, but loaned one for very little whenever needed, from a horse hirer and usually from the Morris Brothers, good family friends. Often (with his sister Jenni) Paul would drive to the Cavalry outpost with supplies for his father, who was a Sergeant in the US Army. Despite being loyal to his profession, Sgt. Adams did not wish his son to follow in his footsteps as a soldier, hoping that all the country's wars would soon end and that all his children would live a peaceful future. None-the-less, Paul was fascinated by war, as many young men were. On visits to the fort he was permitted to enter the fort and mingle with the soldiers, but this he seldom did, as he had to leave his sister outside on her own unless his father was allowed out to meet them outside (which was rare).
Most young men in the Wild West knew how to use a gun, but Paul (from his soldier father) got to know how to use both rifles and pistols with great accuracy. As he aged, he became sought-after locally for mass animal hunts because of his skill with arms. He was too busy for the hunts (some of which could potentially last a few days), but every now and again he would enter a shooting competition in town or county show, and won a good few of them. The money he got from winning these contests he saved up for a special purpose: buying his younger sister Jenni a horse . . .
Paul had once caught a wild mare, and Jenni begged to keep it. But as the family had financial difficulties, they were forced to sell the mare - but bought another later on, as a Christmas gift for Jenni when money was better. Sadly this horse too had to be sold, and Jenni had silently pined ever since. Paul had been keeping money aside, hoping and praying that the perfect horse would come along for his sister's very own.
And finally, one did. Paul was with his father Stg. Adams (on leave) in the centre of Mill Town. It was a market day and the local wranglers were selling wild colts they had rounded up over the last week. Of all the young horses, one stood out: a golden colt with the largest black forelock imaginable covering his eyes, standing very coolly in the middle of the wranglers corral while being surrounded by a seething sea of frightened colts.
Stg. Adams bought the colt. Paul offered to pay his father back with the money he had saved up, but he was ordered to keep it - perhaps he would want his own horse one day.
