Shotgun was born in the middle of Spring. Being born in Spirit's herd, only a few months after Spirit's birth, help them become good friends. Shotgun's mother, Nova, was captured by a group of cowboys for 3 months. for those three months, Esperanze took care of Shotgun. Nova finally escaped from the cowboys. 3 Weeks after Nova's escape, while her and Shotgun where grazing in the woods, a small group of men set a fire. Luckily, Nova and Shotgun escaped. When Shotgun grew up, he and Spirit were captured and taken to the Cavalry. He, unlike Spirit, was branded and easily over comed when ridden. Shotgun was able to escape with Spirit and he too was captured by the Indians. After Spirit left with Rain, to return to the herd, Shotgun was captured by a group of railroad workers. He again, was branded on his right shoulder. After a year of working at the railroads, he managed to escape. He then decided to live with the Lakota tribe.
