History:
J.C. was born in a breeder’s market and was bred for high stamina events. His father was an ex race horse, and his mother was an appaloosa roping horse. However, he was later sold to Margret Hills in Colorado. Margret then gave J.C away as a present to her granddaughter Sheryl Ryde for her 16th birthday.
Sheryl trained J.C to be a hunter jumper horse, and together they traveled all over, winning many blue ribbons. However, on the way home from one of the many shows they had entered, Sheryl’s car swerved off the road in an attempt to avoid hitting a deer. Sheryl was fine, but in the accident, her trailer tipped. J.C wasn’t seriously injured, but he tore ligaments in his back left foot, keeping him from jumping for a while.
Torn, Sheryl removed herself and J.C from any further competitions in the hope that he would get better and back to jumping. After many vet analysis’s, J.C was said to never jump again.
Sheryl ended up buying a new horse to continue to use in the show ring, but J.C stayed with her as well. He was left to be a pasture horse at age 6.
J.C grew agitated, for he couldn’t bear to stay cooped up in a pen for months on end. He longed to return to the jumping ring.
One night, a lone mare approached J.C in the pasture. She was from a herd that lived many miles out, but had migrated to Colorado for the summer to eat the grass here.
Having never seen a domestic horse before, she asked him many questions, of which he was glad to answer. Eventually she was called back and had to return to the herd in which she called home.
J.C longed to go with her, but was too afraid to jump with his bad foot. Jasmine promised she would return with the herd’s leader to help the next night.
As promised, the next evening Jasmine returned with a tall buckskin stallion named Spirit. He was the leader of her herd, and felt pity for J.C. Spirit promised that he would help J.C out, and he could stay with the herd.
Spirit kicked at the fence, hoping to tear it down. However, Sheryl woke up from the noise and ran out to the pasture. Spirit, not wanting to be caught by humans again, was forced to leave. He apologized to J.C, and promised him that if he were ever to escape, he would always be welcomed in the Cimarron herd.
J.C took that to heart, and vowed to one day build up the strength and courage to jump the pen and be reunited with Jasmine, the new love of his life, and Spirit, the kind stallion who tried to set him free.
