Biography:
Damian’s mother was a mare in Strider’s herd. One spring when she and Esperanza were grazing together with the herd, Strider herd some shouts in the distance. The herd took off, but Damian’s mother was not quick enough to escape the calvary, for she was pregnant with Damian. Esperanza almost turned back to help her, but Esperanza did what was best for her unborn foal and ran. Damian’s mother was taken away, but on the way to the calvary camp, the men sold her to a farmer that worked at a huge plantation. Damian’s mother was taken to the plantation, where she was put in a stable. She soon gave birth to Damian. Damian was born pitch black, like his father Strider, who Damian’s mother kept a secret from him. Damian’s mother loved the plantation, but Damian had a strange curiosity of life outside the corrals, stables, and plows. Damian befriended a chestnut filly by the name of Anda that lived in a stable next to him. Anda thought Damian was annoying, but as they got older, she started developing a strange fondness for his quirky ways. As Damian grew, his black coat got lighter, and each day he looked less and less like Strider. As a teen, Damian still had a fascination with the wild. He hatched a plot with Anda to escape the plantation and live freely in the wild. However, there was no need for the plot. A few weeks later, the stables caught fire, and Damian and Anda saw their chance. They escaped the plantation, but before they could get far, Damian’s mother caught up with them. She told Damian about his father Strider and how she wished that Damian find him and tell him that she still loved him. Damian’s mother turned and headed back to the plantation, to old to make the journey to find Strider. With that, Anda and Damian left. They got directions from the a rogue stallion to the Cimarron herd and took off. They traveled many days and nights to try to reach the herd. When they were only a few miles away, the two were attacked by wolves. Anda and Damian tried to get to the herd, knowing safety and numbers. But when they crossed a fallen log over a large, deep, fast river, Anda slipped and tumbled into the churning water below, presumably to her death. Crushed yet frantic to get to the herd, Damian kept running. When Damian safely reached the herd, it was very late, so he was permitted to stay the night. The next day, Damian asked the lead stallion about Strider. A palomino mare stepped up and told the stallion, who Damian discovered was named Spirit, that she would explain everything. The mare, named Esperanza, explained that Strider was the herd’s previous stallion, but was driven out by a crazed rogue stallion who died of disease not long after, how spirit was her and Strider’s son, and how she had been Strider’s lead mare. Damian explained his story, choking up at the bit about Anda, and Esperanza smiled when he mentioned his mother. Damian asked Spirit if it was okay to stay in the herd while he looked for a bachelor herd to join, which Spirit hesitantly approved. While in the herd, Damian took a liking to one of Spirit’s mares. Her name was Rain, and she was Spirit’s lead mare. Rain found herself having similar feelings for Damian. Spirit noticed, and Damian was driven out immediately. Damian joined a bachelor herd that lived on the outskirts of the Cimarron herd. Every once in awhile he would see Rain at the territory boundary, who he would start to approach, but each time he was driven away by the memory of the look of horror on Anda’s face as she tumbled toward the river and her death.
