And despite her troubles with family in her past, she is willing to lay down her life for those she cares about, and is very loyal to her daughter and Mate.
Story: Silver Stream was born into Bonita’s herd. And she wasn’t Silver Stream at first. Her mother had given her the name Ara, when she was born into the herd. However many horses did not except her because her father was a rouge stallion who force-bred her mother. She was teased by many foals because of her interest in the little things in life, she liked to watch the bugs and birds fly over her head and tried to chase after them gracefully, she was amazed even at the small ants that scurried across the ground. The foals called her names and the mares looked at her funny. Ara found Herd life very strange and couldn’t understand why the other horses were so different than her. Her mother tried to except her, but found it very hard… still she did her best to look after her foal and keep Ara safe.
But there was one mare that Ara didn’t get along with at all…Tally! The lead mare! She always nipped at Ara to keep up and was never nice to her. Tally saw Ara as a misfit, a nucence, and a pesky foal she had to keep in line. But what Tally hated most of all was the fact she was half rouge. But one day when winter was almost to the valley her mother grew very ill and passed away. Ara was alone, with no one to help her, and without her mother to protect her… Tally could do whatever she saw fit! Ara laid by her mother crying pitifully, as she just couldn’t understand how her mother was just gone, and refusing to leave her mother’s side Tally decided to leave the young filly behind and take the herd onward. There were a few mares who objected to this but Tally was lead mare, and no one dared stand up to her; fearing they would face a punishment. And so Ara was all alone, without her mother, or her herd.
The next morning Ara had no choice but to leave her mother’s dead body. But being only a foal she hadn’t an idea where she would go or what she would eat… Her stomach growled with aggravation. She wondered aimlessly crying out for help with no answer to her desperate call. She collapsed near a giant pine tree laying there cold, hungry, and crying tears of pain and loss. Ara remembered how the elders in her herd would talk about the word “death” She hadn’t understood it, nor could she when her own mother had become a victim of it herself. She just couldn’t understand it! Horses would fall their eyes would turn a glazy blue, and just like that they’d be gone out of your life! Ara hated that word it was so sad and mean, and she still had a hard time understanding it as it began to eat at her body… And with the thought of it, her mother’s death, and her banishment still fresh in her mind, she felt faint and slowly the cold world faded to black…
Ara felt the scampering of a furry animal across her hide, and she twitched slowly opening her eyes to see what it was. And what she discovered that was standing on her side was a small, but curious snow rabbit. She was afraid of it at first and shied away against the tree, but something far more intriguing to her caught her eye; an endless blanket of white was sprawled among the ground! “Ahh! What is this stuff! It’s everywhere! And so cold!” Ara whimpered. “Why it’s snow of course!” The furry rabbit pointed out, looking at Ara with a strange gaze. “What are you? A bird?” “What?! I’m no bird I’m a snow rabbit! ...And from the looks of it… You appear to be a horse foal.” Ara nodded slowly and forced herself to sit up. “Do you have a name kid?” the rabbit asked now curious. “Yea… It’s Ara…” She replied skittishly. “Well Ara… Aren’t you supposed to be in one of those herd thingies?” Ara felt hot tears sting her eyes as she remembered why she was here anyhow. “They-they-left me behind…” Ara sobbed. “Left you?!” The rabbit pulled back in disgust of the ones who had abandoned her. “Well… Do you have a mom or dad?” “My mother is dead… and I don’t know my father…” Ara began to cry out now. The rabbit bounded towards her sympathetically. “Oh c’mon kid! It’ll be ok! Are ya-Are ya- hungry? Hurt? Why don’t you come with me to my den? I’ll help you.” The rabbit offered. “Really? Can I?” Ara sniffled and then she remembered how her mother always told her when other horses are nice, that she should thank them. “Oh thank you Mr. Rabbit!” Ara bowed her head. The little snow rabbit smirked very intrigued with the small filly. And motioned with his paw; “C’mon Ara I’ll take you there.” “Ok…” Ara said attempting to stagger to her feet. “Easy kid, we’ll go slow ok?” Ara nodded but then stopped at the edge of the Pine tree’s shadow where the blanket of white began. “Um… Can I walk on this stuff?” Ara shook a little. “Well yeah, it’s only snow.” The rabbit smiled at her curiosity. “Where does snow come from?” “Snow comes from winter of course!” “Winter? Momma told me about that. I’ve never seen it though…” Ara stepped out and touched it with her hoof and jumped back in fright. It was so cold! “What’s the matter kid?” The rabbit asked raising an eyebrow. “It just… So c-c-cold!” Ara shivered at the snow’s touch. “Yup! That’s ol’ winter for ya!” The rabbit laughed. Ara saw the rabbit’s silly grin, and how he stood in the snow with complete ease. And with that Ara began to smile and bounded into the snow, happily and carefree, as if the wonderful season of winter had blown away her troubles and she was happy. Ara finally that she belonged, and has loved the snow ever since.
That Winter Ara had learned to adapt to the snow and take care of herself. The cold did not bother her, and she learned to appreciate the natures of life in all shapes and sizes; even the smallest things amazed her. She loved how the winter wind would blow a cool breeze through her mane and how when she galloped through the snow, it would splash against her legs sending a feeling of freeness throughout her body, thus earned herself a nickname by humans who managed to see her… The Snow Mare. Ara knew what humans were, and was swift and graceful so that she wouldn’t be caught, and taken away from her home. She found the humans very strange but interesting.
Ara loved the winter, and as she turned 1 year old, she was in for a big surprise when she saw a small young bear come out of its cave. Ara knew what bears were from the animals but, she was told that the bears don’t come out until spring when all the snow would melt away and disappear, and the new green grass would grow, and the sun would warm the earth. Ara was frightened the snow was still on the ground, but it wouldn’t be for long! Ara didn’t know what she would do without snow and winter but realized there was nothing she could do to keep winter going. She tried to keep positive and think of the good side to spring... She might like it a lot… there will be new animals. Her thoughts were interrupted as she heard faint clopping sounds of hooves and whinnies. Her eyes widened as she quickly began to scan the area for a hiding spot. She hid behind a small shrub covered in snow, breathing softly so not to attract whatever was coming her way. But to her surprisal… It was a young dappled bay colt! Ara’s mouth gaped open at the sight of another foal her age. She hadn’t seen a foal since she had left her herd! Just then a pine cone flew by over her head with the strange colt galloping after it. “I got it! I got it!” He shouted unaware of the tall tree with branches full of snow that stood in front of him, and rammed into it head first and fell down groaning as a bunch of snow fell on top of him. Ara held her breath as her cheeks turn a hot red as she tried to hold in her laugh. But Ara only failed letting out a small squeak. The colt shook until his head was uncovered and blinked at the small squeaking sound. Ara felt a chill of fear go down her back as she realized he was going to discover her…. Few had ever seen Ara before, yet now it seemed she was going to be ascertained by this young colt! She in fear galloped off before he could see what she was. The colt’s eyes widened as he galloped after her as fast as he could muster. He caught up to her quickly, and this shocked Ara. She had, never met someone who could keep up with her! Not even back at the herd! Ara slid into a small ice tunnel where she hid behind a giant ice wall that blurred the colt’s vision of her. He slid to a stop in front of her. “Hey why’d you run like that? I’m sorry if I scared you! I’m not gonna hurt ya…” The colt tried to sound appealing. Ara flicked her ear at him trying to decide if she should reveal herself or stay hidden. “Will you come out please?” The colt lowered his head trying to see Ara. Ara opened her eyes and took a gulp, and with uneasiness in her she slowly stood up and walked out from behind the ice her face still pale with a mixture of fear and curiosity. The colt stood there astonished. “Wow you’re a filly! I never would’ve guessed, usually foals can’t keep up with me!” He smiled at her. Ara cocked her head unsure if she should be kind to this colt… “Well then, you got a name filly?” He continued on. “…Yes… It’s Ara…” Ara spoke very timidly. “Well Ara, what are you doing out here alone? Don’t you have a herd or a tribe?” “No… I live here in the woods with the animals. The winter is my home…” She forced a smile. “The winter??” Then the colt gasped. “Hey you’re the Snow Mare!” Ara remembered this name the humans shouted at her when they had a chance to take a glimpse at her. “Yeah, I guess so…” She nodded. “Wow! No wonder you’re so fast I never thought I’d actually get to meet the famous Snow Mare! I-I have so many questions! Do is your coat really made of the delicate falling snow?” At this Ara was amused she blushed. She had never been admired by someone before… she chuckled and shook her head. “Nope, But I do love the snow!” She giggled. “Oh wow! Oh I almost forgot my name’s Kwahu.” He said smiling. “Kwahu? What an interesting name.” “Yep! My humans gave it to me. It means Eagle.” At this Ara jumped away. “Wha-whats the matter Ara?” fear that he had said something wrong faded into his eyes. “You’re with the humans! You’re going to take me away!” Ara cried. “What?! No I’m not! I would never do that! And why are you afraid of them? They aren’t bad!’ “But I heard that they put ropes around your neck and take you away from your home…” “Not necessarily… They do put ropes on you and at one point they do try to ride you… but they do good things too.” Ara raised her head. “..They do?” “Of course. Sometime they’ll let you go play in the meadow and go on trips with the brave horses, and also if you do something good, or heroic, the humans will paint a symbol on you and put feathers of the mightiest bird in your mane! My father has many of those.” He bragged. Ara was now intrigued, she was still unsure but, Kwahu made the human place sound fun. “Really?!” She asked now interested. “Is the human place… pretty? Does it have animals? Are the horses nice?” “Yeah! A bunch of them! And in the spring if you go to the top of the gorge hill, you can see the pink flowers come into bloom and turn the whole field pink!” Kwahu noticed she was smiling with interest. “Hey Ara by any chance would you like to come with me to my village?” He smirked. Unsurness crept into her gaze once more as she was torn on whether or not she’d like to go. “Well I-“ “Well I hope you can decide by tomorrow morning, because that’s when I’ll be by with my mother to get an answer! See ya Ara!” Kwahu said quickly as he ran off. “Hey! Kwahu wait!’’ But it was too late the colt was already gone. Ara sighed heavily.
That day Ara paced around in the snow, deciding what she was going to do. She had lived in the Wintery woods for the longest time, and now she was asked to leave to human’s place with a colt she just met yesterday! Ara shook her head in frustration. Kwahu did make it sound fun though… But Ara hadn’t been around her own kind since her mother died… Would they except her, or reject her? What would she say? How would she fit in? But Kwahu was so nice to her… and maybe it was time or her to return to her own kind where she belonged… Just then Ara felt a melted drop of snow fall on her nose. All the same, spring was coming and she hadn’t a clue what to do. Maybe if she lived with a bunch of horses like Kwahu she would feel safe… Ara made her decision… She would go with Kwahu to the human land, and be with the other horses. So the next morning Ara got up early and waited at the end of the forest for Kwahu and his mother. She soon heard them approaching and readied herself to meet Kwahu’s mother Kwahu trotted happily up to her smiling with his mother trailing behind him. “Hey Ara! Did you decide to come with me?” “Mm hmm!” She nodded gleefully. “I’m really excited too Kwahu! I have to say though I’m really nervous about this… I mean are you sure the horses are gonna like me?...” “Of course they will Ara! Everyone in the tribe is really nice, they’ll be sure to love you Ara! And I know the humans will love you!” Ara sighed at the human part; she wanted to stay with them but had no experience with being trained. Just then a beautiful white mare came into Ara’s view and smiled down at her. “Hello little one, so you must be the filly Kwahu was talking about?” She said in a kind voice. “And the Snow Mare? Very impressive. I take it I’ll be guiding you back to the village yes?” Ara smiled and bowed politely. “Yes mam.” The mare turned and smiled. “Well let’s be going then.” Ara smiled and followed. “Oh and Ara, I forgot to tell you living with the humans, you will be given a new name.” Kwahu said as he walked with her. “A new name? But why?” She asked not completely sure she wanted a new name. “Well Ara we can’t speak up and tell the humans our real names, so the humans give us one to call us by.” “And very pretty names at that Ara. I’m sure you will receive a wonderful name.” Kwahu’s mother smiled encouraging her. Ara nodded slowly smiling a thank you.
When they arrived at the Lakota Village, everyone stared at Ara and the little humans giggled tugging away from their parents wanting to touch her. Ara blushed embarrassed. Kwahu smirked at this as they reached a human boy who stroked Kwahu’s mother as she walked away. Kwahu stood beside Ara’s side so she wouldn’t get scared. The human smiled at her and reached forward to pet her. Ara yanked back in fright but Kwahu nudged her side with his muzzle assuring her she would be ok. So Ara slowly reached her muzzle to meet the human’s and felt a wave of a comforts sweep over her. She had never been touched by the human before, but something in her liked being petted, it gave her a sense of comfort and pleasure. The human turned and got a small rope and tried to slip it over Ara’s neck, and as she saw it she reared in fear. So to provide a more comfortable way to lead Ara, Kwahu simply beckoned her to follow him into a small corral. Kwahu explained to her that she would probably need to stay in here until she was trusted by the humans to roam by herself. Ara didn’t want to be separated from the others although she was used to being alone so it wasn’t much of a challenge.
Taming Ara was not an easy task. It was hard to catch her when she began to run, and she hated ropes. But with Kwahu’s help, the humans were able to at least get her used to being around humans. A few days after her arrival, the snow had melted away welcoming the new grass and the hot sun. This unusual heat on Ara’s back made Ara begin to whimper, longing for snow once more. Kwahu came down to see her and noticed her whimpering. “What’s wrong Ara?” He asked sticking his head through the bars. “It’s winter… It’s gone Kwahu! The snow is gone!” Ara whimpered softly. “Aw Ara don’t cry! Spring isn’t so bad. After all it is the season the animals and the flowers come out! And I did tell you I’d take you to see the pink flowers blossom, didn’t I?” Ara sniffed and looked up at him, then began to smile. “Just hang in there a little longer, Okay kiddo?” Ara nodded, as Kwahu turned and walked away.
It was the next step of Ara’s training, and the humans decided she should know her way around the village. So they decided they would tie Ara to Kwahu and let him show her around. “Alright girl, come here now.” The Lakota boy beckoned her with one end of the rope tied to Kwahu. Ara unsurely walked towards the human as he tied the other end to Ara. Kwahu gave her a smile and Ara managed a smile back. So Kwahu showed Ara the whole village, where the horses were, the huts, the little humans place, and his favorite places to play at. But then he started to walk outside the territory past some bushes and through a tree grove tunnel. “Kwahu, where are we going?” Ara asked galloping by his side. “I told you at the corral didn’t I? It’s spring Ara! And the pink flowers are gonna bloom!” Kwahu explained. A huge smile of sheer excitement faded into Ara’s face as she saw a bright light as they came out of the tunnel. “Wow!!” Ara gazed among the enormous field of pink blooming flowers. “Whoo Hooo!” Ara shouted galloping down pulling Kwahu with her into the flowers. She danced about loving every moment of this day. She felt so graceful and free she galloped about happily kicking and frolicking. Kwahu laughed with her, glad that he could bring a smile to her timid face. Ara laid down and blew a flower with a small bee in it. “Wow how amazing.” Ara closed her eyes sighing. “Well I’m glad you like it!” Kwahu smiled lying down with her. “Kwahu?” “Yes?” “Thank you.” Kwahu blushed looking away smiling. “Uh-um-it-it was nothing Ara just doing my duty as a colt! That’s all!” Ara giggled then broke out in a laugh. Kwahu seeing her laugh began to laugh with her. The two foals galloped happily back to the village and up to the human boy. The human watched her galloping as her mane flew in the wind it shined and shimmered like a river of sleek silver… “Welcome back little Kwahu, and little Silver Stream.” The human said as they walked up to him. “Silver Stream! That’s your new name Ara- I mean Silver Stream!” Silver Stream’s eyes widened and then smiled to herself. She liked it; it was pretty and suited her well. “I’m Silver Stream!” She proclaimed proudly.
Silver stream had lived in the Lakota Village and been best friends with Kwahu ever since. As Silver Stream reached the age of two, her relationship with Kwahu had grown stronger. She began to realize herself that she no longer saw Kwahu as a friend, but someone that she truly loved from the bottom of her heart. It was a stormy night and Silver Stream was looking after some foals for one of the mares in the village, when they scampered off and a heavy storm approached. Silver Stream got worried about them as a hard rain pounded on her back, as she searched for them. She was not able to find them and she decided to make sure they weren’t near the river getting themselves in trouble. But the wind and hard rain picked up and made it harder for Silver Stream to walk through it. Kwahu had begun to pace around worrying his head off about Silver Stream, and why she hadn’t returned. So he decided he would go look for her himself. Meanwhile Silver Stream searched the river for the foals, when she was hit by a massive wind, and thrown into the river! She squealed in horror as she was plunged into the cold unforgiving waters of the river. She thrashed about, but the problem was Silver Stream didn’t know how to swim! Hearing her squeal, Kwahu raced down to the river spotting Silver Stream struggling to stop herself. “SILVER STREAM!” he yelled out to her as her head slipped under the water. “KWA-“Kwahu in a desperate attempt to save Silver Stream from the thrashing currents. Kwahu tossed her onto his back and dug his hooves into the ground to hold his place, Silver Stream helpless to help him, for she had passed out. Kwahu fought his way upstream and onto the river bank and staggered out of the river weak and out of breath. He limped back to camp with Silver Stream dangling on his back. Silver Stream had never gone near water again after that.
Silver Stream blinked her eyes as she awoke. And saw that Kwahu was lying next to her smiling as she awoke. “You’re alright!” Kwahu cried as he threw his neck around hers. “Kwahu?... The river! I was drowning! The-the foals!” Silver Stream panicked as she recalled the previous night. “Easy goes it Silver! The foals are fine they came back to the village after the rain had stopped, and as for you drowning, I think you look pretty much alive to me!” Kwahu smirked at her. Silver Stream began to smile when she saw Kwahu’s leg wrapped up. “Oh no! Kwahu Your leg!!” She wailed. “I’m fine Silver Stream, really. It’s not that bad.” Kwahu insured her. “But you’re not! I’m so sorry Kwahu! This is my fault!” She cried resting her head over Kwahu’s back. “Please Silver Stream don’t cry. I hate to see you cry, I makes me upset. Please smile for me alright?” Kwahu smiled at her weakly. Silver Stream looked up into his deep blue eyes, and blushed. She turned and then looked up at him smiling. “Okay, I will! And I’ll try not to cry so much anymore.” She smiled warmly. “That’s my Wa-shte’ ” Kwahu climbed to his feet and began to walk away. “Wa-shte’ Kwahu?” She asked him. “It means beautiful.” Kwahu called going into a gallop. Silver Stream blushed bright red watching him gallop away. “Oh Kwahu….”
When Silver Stream had turned three, she had become a responsible, beautiful, independent mare. She had been helping an older girl human pick apples in the orchard by carrying the baskets on her back. When all the sudden she felt her tail yanked. She jumped back and the apples went tumbling from the baskets. And behind her stood a smirking Kwahu. She narrowed her eyes at him and nipped at him playfully. “Kwahu!” She smirked scoldingly. “Sorry Silvie! Didn’t mean to make you drop your apples.” He smirked walking beside her. The human looked up at the two horses and shook her finger at them. “See now the human will have to pick them up, you naughty stallion!” She smirked. “Well this is urgent; I need to ask you something really important…” “What is it?” “Will you meet me at the flower gorge?” “The flower gorge? We haven’t gone there since we were foals! It sounds like a lovely idea!” She smiled and hugged him. “I thought you might want to go, after all it was your favorite place to go when we were foals.” He smiled at her. “Yeah… But why all the sudden do you want to take me there?” “No specific reason…” Kwahu blushed. “Kwahu…’’ Silver Stream raised an eye brow saying his name in a low tone. “Just meet me there at sundown okay?” He sighed smiling. “Alright.” Silver Stream laughed turning back to her human as Kwahu walked away. So Silver Stream did as Kwahu had asked of her and met him at the flower gorge. As Silver Stream came out of the tree tunnel and saw the pink field of flowers, the memories of her past flooded her mind and she closed her eyes walking down into the flowers. She l et the gentle winds blow through her mane, as she felt tranquil. She leaped into the air to meet the wind and found herself in a graceful dance with the wind. She stopped and laid down in the flowers, closing her eyes. “Oh what a beautiful place…” She sighed. “It sure is…” Kwahu said smiling at her as he walked into the field. “Kwahu, we need to come here more often, it’s beautiful!” “I’ll come here as many times as you want me too with you Silver Stream.” Kwahu sat down beside her still smiling. “Silver Stream, I need to talk to you about something I’ve wanted to tell you for a while now…” He started, as he looked into her eyes. “Sure! Go ahead I’m all ears!” She smiled flicking her ears back and forth. “Ok. Silver Stream…. Remember when I first found you and brought you to the village? Well back then we were just foals… and we were good friends right?” “Yes of course! And we still are right Kwahu?” “Well… That’s what I’m getting to… Silver Stream, I’ve grown up with you, and seen you transform into this beautiful, smart, and curious young mare and you’re just so… unbelievable. What I’m trying to say Silver Stream, is that I don’t want to be friends anymore.” Silver Stream pondered what he was saying and her eyes began to widen. “Silver Stream… I want to be more than that… because I…” Kwahu gulped. “L-l-love you…” Kwahu finished looking into Silver Stream’s eyes. Silver Stream stood there in surprise… then threw herself at Kwahu. “Oh Kwahu! I love you too! I wanted to tell you how I felt… But I just didn’t know how to say it! I’m so glad you feel the same way!” She spilled her feelings for him smiling warmly. Kwahu pulled his head up blushing. “Me too! Silver Stream!” He put his neck over hers, and nuzzled her gently. Silver Stream was so happy, from that day forward; she would live out her life with the one she loved.
