:~History~:

Kemuri was bred for the purpose of being the Colonel’s mount, and because the Colonel wanted a very large, sturdy yet quick and steady horse to ride he was born at Fort Riley, Kansas to Seàrlaid, a docile Scottish Clydesdale mare and Cincinnati, the abnormally large and favored stallion of Ulysses S. Grant. Kemuri was born on a hot August night at the peak of summer, ironically he would later come to despise the heat, and even as a colt was massive in size and build.

Kemuri was quiet placid in nature – ideal for a cavalry mount – and was quickly trained solely by the Colonel himself. He was treated quite kindly throughout his training, and always looked to the Colonel for a caramel candy at the end of a ride. Kemuri’s size lent itself well to the Colonel who, towered above the rest of his mounted men by nearly two feet. After Kemuri turned three, both he and the Colonel were re-located to the new Cavalry Fort in North Dakota.

(Battle History) Kemuri was quickly thrust into action and fought in many battles. He, alongside the Colonel was actually awarded several medals of honor and bravery in battle.

·      1868-Battle of Washita River

·      1868- Red Clouds War

·      1870 – (Briefly) Black Hawks War

·      Numerous other Unnamed engagements.

In 1870, After travelling to Colorado to lead and exchange in the Black Hawks war, Kemuri had received a bullet to the hind left leg in the crossfire, and it had hit the general area of an old injury, where an arrow had struck nearly 2 years earlier in the Battle of Washita River. The other officers of the regiment told the Colonel to put Kemuri out of his suffering, that the nearest railroad was too far away and that he would never make it, but the Colonel wouldn’t have any of it and managed to get both himself and Kemuri back to their base in North Dakota, alive.

Kemuri was put on “Indefinite” stall rest and the Colonel was told he could never be ridden again, though that was not the case. Still, the Colonel took up riding Granite for the next 2 years, though they never got along. Granite was Kemuri’s half brother, they shared the same stallion, Cincinnati, though Granite’s harsh, abrasive and unforgiving personality never went well with Kemuri’s.

About a year and a half after Kemuri was injured (Just after the Colonel’s final encounter with spirit) the Colonel took him out again, and within half a years time they were back to leading the regiment. Though Kemuri, after having time to ponder his actions, wasn’t quite sure if he – by raiding countless indian villages – was doing the right thing at all.

A year and a half after he started work again, He and the Colonel led a mercenary search party for a lost, expensive mare known as Esperit. It was an unusually cold winter that had Snowstorms raging through march that it was, and the snow was so deep that only the tallest horses (like himself) could actually leave the camp. His Clydesdale breeding also made him les prone to the cold, which is why he and the Colonel led the hunt. Using Tracking hounds they had followed the scent of the mare, and blood and happened upon her and a newborn filly. This was a major turning point in Kemuri’s life.

~.~

Kemuri had balked at the canyon, he couldn’t go down there, wouldn’t break up a family. ‘It’s not right.’ He told himself, watching as the wranglers pursued mare and foal through the catacombs of the canyon. His heart had lurched and his faith snapped when the mare, Esperit toppled over the edge of the cliff and into the blackness, leaving her now orphan filly to escape.

The Colonel directed him past the canyon and towards a dry, dusty bluff – they were heading off the filly – he realized and felt sickened.

But a stallion – Trigger, he’d seen the lone stud before, even talked to him – appeared and Kemuri realized that the filly must be his. Trigger, enraged had charged him and Kemuri felt the shift of his rider and heard the click of the gun and he looked into the green green eyes of the little filly and realized that he couldn’t do it anymore, he couldn’t tear apart another family. Not like this.

So he buckled his knees, intentionally dumping his rider for the first time in his life. He felt horrible, breaking the bond with the colonel that they had spent years and endless hours forging, but not as terrible as he felt knowing that if the gun went off, another family would be torn apart. But even for his size and strength, Kemuri couldn’t stop his old wound from acting up, and his leg seized and he could only sit there helpless as he watched the Colonel shoot Trigger right in the head.

His leg suddenly no longer mattered, the pain gone with adrenaline and Kemuri shot to his feet, enraged. He knocked the Colonel in the back of the head, only just to knock him out, not to kill. He quickly turned around and picked up the little filly by the scruff of her neck, and dashed off trough the blizzarding snow, he took to the forest, going through the deepest tracks where he knew the other horses couldn’t follow. He ran for as long as he could until he found a dense forest thicket, and settled down.

The filly was cold, shivering and her breath was shallow. She was unnaturally small, and he figured that she must’ve been at least a month early. Kemuri feared for the life he had fought so hard to save, and so he curled up around her, doing all he could to keep her warm.

It worked. Somehow it worked because a few hours after he settled the filly shifted, and Kemuri was happier than he had been in a long time. The little filly looked at him, and he smiled. “The names Kemuri, kid.” He said, his voice unnaturally gruff and tired even to his own ears. The little foal smiled at him with tired, but bright minty green eyes and then flopped back down on his rump. He chuckled. “Don’t worry kid. I got you.” And he would, Kemuri would protect this thing with all he had.
