Shadow, was born to Lunar and Swiftfire in February of 1858. His parents raised him in what became known as the Dakota Territory. Lunar and Swiftfire were proud of their son and loved to watch him gallop across the plains. Lunar passed away in 1863 when Shadow was six and his father was left to raise his son alone. Swiftfire became the leader of a herd in the area of the Yellowstone River. His son was viewed by many in the herd as one of the most beautiful and desirable stallions. His black coat, blue eyes and white star marking on his forehead set him aside from many of the horses in the herd. Shadow's herd was eventually targeted by ranchers who were contracted by the US Army to acquire horses for the military. Shadow's father Swiftfire and many of his friends were captured, Shadow escaped by jumping into a river and fought his way downstream eventually losing consciousness. When he awoke he was staring face to face with Spirit, who's herd had found Shadow washed upon the banks of a river that ran through their territory. Spirit made Shadow a member of his herd and gave him a place where he could feel like he belonged. Shadow eagerly joined the herd and quickly made new friends amongst Spirit's herd finally finding a safe place where he could live in peace. Shadow eventually went on to become mate to Miranda, and was reunited with his long lost twin sister Scarlett.
