Because Defender is a nice stallion, he can get quite angry when he sees his friends hurt by another horse. He will try to defend them as best as possible.
History
Defender was born into the Starchaser Herd. He was going to be the next herd stallion. Defender had a brother named Dreamchaser and a sister named Whiteline. The three of them would often play together in their valley, galloping across hills and dashing through forests and streams.
Defender admired a red roan mare that was in his herd. Her name was Crimson. Defender tried to win Crimson's heart, and he succeeded. Crimson and Defender would often hang out together and go for romantic strolls. The two of them would stop at a place with a pretty view and admire the beauty. Defender and Crimson got along so well, it was like they were sister and brother.
That winter of Defender's life was depressing. During the summer, a great wildfire burned up all of foliage in the valley. It never grew back in time for winter. The horses had water to drink but no food to eat. The food that they did find was of poor quality.
One day during that winter, Defender's brother, Dreamchaser, asked Crimson if she would sneak into the evil Great Horses lair and steal some food from them. The drought had not hit the Great Horses' valley and they had plenty of food. Crimson wasn't so sure about stealing from the Great Horses. What if they found out? Defender almost started a fight with Dreamchaser, but Crimson stopped him, saying that she was so hungry, she was willing to steal. Crimson snuck into the Great Horses' valley and stole some food. Unfortunately, Black Shadow, the lead stallion of the Great Horses, saw her take the food out of the corner of his eye. He ordered some of his herd members to track Crimson and follow her to where she was going. The Great Horses did as they were told. When they found her, they raided the valley. Defender, Crimson, and all the rest of the Starchaser Herd members were startled. Dreamchaser felt horrible. He knew he had caused this. If he hadn't told Crimson to steal food from the Great Horses, none of this would've happened. Now Crimson was in danger because of him. Feeling bad, Dreamchaser fled from the valley.
Defender was separated from his herd during the battle. He wandered around for days and tried to find his way back to the valley, but he couldn't. so Defender, knowing that he must follow a certain path to a certain valley in Montana, set out on his way. Along his journey, he met six other horses. Defender began to fall for one of the horses, a mare named Baron. A stallion named Darkenfire didn't get along that well with Defender. The two would often start fighting out of the blue. Darkenfire eventually left the group of friends.
When the horses reached the valley in Montana, they were greeted by a herd that lived there, the Skydreamer Herd. The group helped fight off the Great Horses that raided the valley of the Skydreamer Herd, and then found a place where they could live in peace.
