Rays had fun running around with his older brothers, Thundercloud and Dustietrail. He always got along with his older sister, DarkMoon. Rays loved his home and would never want to give it up. He always watched when his father chased off other stallions, exspecially the ones that wanted nothing but his father's mares and band. As the months passed, little Rays got bigger and bigger and a lot stronger. He started to wonder away from his band a lot more. It was also noticable that Hawk and Crowflinch were starting to become more distant from one another, not being full lovers anymore. But little Rays didn't know this and he didn't realize it until he was 1 year and 2 months old, when his father completely left his mother for a mare named Twist Coder, or Twist. Even when she was left by her lover, Hawk kept the rank of Lead Mare. Having no one that ever wanted to challange her for it. Then one day Twist challanged Hawk to a battle for the rank of lead mare. Twist won, and to prove her new rank affective, she chased Hawk out of the band. Rays loved his mother, having always been a mama's boy, he left with her. Both of them outcasts of their band. It was only when Rays was 2 years old did he loss his mother. They were out on a rainny day when tamed horses and their Upwalkers (Humans) showed up. They started to chase Hawk and Rays as the storm broke, Hawk being as old as she was, fell into a deadly mud river and was sufferacted and Rays was dragged off by the Upwalkers, never to see his mother again. However, two months after being captive of the upwalkers, the young stallion escaped and from then on, has been on his own, surviving the harsh climate of his home.
