Personality
Flaming Star is the kind of horse that is gentle and friendly around his own kind but when he is around humans, he tries to defend himself as best as possible. He doesn't like to be around horses that are against him, or in other words, are not on the same side as him. It is true that he does dislike quite a few things, but that doesn't mean that he only likes himself and things that have to do with him. Flaming Star is not self-centered at all. He thinks about his family, mate, and friends alot and what he could do for him. He cares about them alot and he would do anything for them.
History
Flaming Star was born in the middle of May to Spirit and Rain. He had inherited Spirit's golden dun coat and Rain's paint markings. Like all foals that had just been born, Flaming Star was really clumsy when he struggled to stand up. Spirit and Rain watched as their son tried to balance himself on his long, skinny legs. Flaming Star seemed to even himself out and get his legs under him, but suddenly, his legs buckled and he collapsed in a heap on the ground.
Spirit nickered at Flaming Star's attempt to stand, then watched as he pulled himself off the ground. He rocked back on his hind legs for a moment, and then found his balance. He was standing! Flaming Star trotted in a circle. Then he trotted up to Rain and began to nurse.
As the days passed, Flaming Star grew bigger and stronger. He could gallop at top speed and skid to a halt in a second. He was the one of the fastest horses in the Cimarron Herd, almost as fast as Spirit.
One day, Flaming Star was galloping through the valley, trying to test the limits of his freedom. He was galloping as fast as he could and his goal was to reach the other end of the valley without stopping. Flaming Star galloped faster. He could see a forest in front of him. Beyond that forest was the end of the valley.
Flaming Star galloped under the branches of the trees and found himself in a beautiful forest. Golden light shone in between the branches and a silver waterfall poured down a huge bluff and gradually flowed into a stream.
Flaming Star didn't stop to look at the scenery, though. He galloped through the stream, his hooves sending up a spray of water. As he galloped further into the forest, he could hear squishing sounds under his hooves. He looked ahead and saw that he had come to a swamp! He veered clear of the murky water, but as he did so, he tripped over a rock and fell head over heels onto the ground. He pulled himself to his feet and looked fearfully at the spooky clearing he had come to. There was something strange about it. The silence was eerie and not a single breeze stirred the leaves on the branches. Flaming Star was completely alone.
A terrified whinny broke the silence. It sounded like a foal's whinny, and Flaming Star galloped toward the sound. As he crashed through the underbrush, he came to another clearing. In the middle of it, stood a little filly, all alone.
Flaming Star looked closer. The filly was a mulberry gray with a light gray Appaloosa frost blanket. The filly whinnied again, and this time, Flaming Star answered her. The filly pricked her ears, suddenly alert.
Flaming Star galloped toward the filly."What's your name?" he asked.
"Snowfall," the filly replied. "What's yours?"
"Flaming Star," Flaming Star said."Are you from the Cimarron Herd?"
Snowfall nodded. "Yes. I was galloping through the forest when suddenly, I got lost. I was calling to my parents, hoping they could hear me."
"I know the way out," Flaming Star said. "Follow me."
Ever since that day, Snowfall and Flaming Star were best friends. They played together and even raced each other. By the time they were yearlings, they were as frisky as ever.
One day, Flaming Star was drinking from a pool in a beautiful clearing of willow, blossom, and pine trees. He was now four years old, an adult horse. He was at peace until a palomino appaloosa stallion with one blind eye burst through the trees.
The stallion's one good eye widened when he saw Flaming Star. "What are you doing here?"
"Just drinking," Flaming Star said. "And who are you?"
The stallion lifted his head."My name is Goldenfrost, of course." Then he turned toward Flaming Star. "This is my territory. Get out!"
Flaming Star turned toward Goldenfrost and bared his teeth. The two stallions rose on their hind legs and fought. Finally, Goldenfrost walked away. He looked back over his shoulder and said," I'll get you for this. I swear!"
From that day on, Flaming Star and Goldenfrost were sworn enemies. But Flaming Star didn't let thoughts of Goldenfrost distract him from finding a mate. One day, he came upon a beautiful mare. She was a golden dun pinto like Flaming Star, but she had a brown mane and tail and a white patch on her belly and two white patches on both cheeks. Flaming Star found out that her name was Signal. Flaming Star tried showing off to her by lifting his head high and arching his neck, but she just rolled her eyes and walked right past him. Flaming Star was frustrated that he hadn't won Signal's heart, so that night, he decided to do a very daring thing to impress her. He was going to show her that he could jump one of the chasms in the mountains that bordered the valley.
But Signal wasn't impressed. She felt scared for Flaming Star, even though she hardly knew him. As Flaming Star jumped into thin air, he hung there for a few seconds, and then plummeted toward the ground. The ground rushed up at him, but he managed to land on all fours. But Flaming Star was trapped at the bottom of the chasm. In the morning, the soldiers from the cavalry rode by and captured him. He was taken to the cavalry fort. The Colonel and the soldiers tried to break Flaming Star, but he threw every single one of them. The soldiers locked him up in a stall for the night and tied him up in it, but he chewed through the rope and hid behind one of the wooden buildings until morning. When the soldiers opened the doors of the fort in the morning, Flaming Star made a run for it. He returned to the Cimarron herd and saw Goldenfrost trying to win Signal's heart. Flaming Star fought Goldenfrost and he won. Signal was impressed by Flaming Star's strength and asked him to be her mate. He agreed.
