History
Wind was born and raised in Strider's herd, but he was not of Strider's blood. His mother was pregnant with him while their stallion became sick and walked off and never returned. The small group was alone for days. Some mares left to go find other stallions, the rest stayed. The mares that were together walked into another stallion's territory. Strider, took them into his herd.
Even at just a couple of months old, Wind could out-run the other foals, but he soon left his arrogant stage after turning into a yearling. After that, he spent two years watching Strider and how he ran his herd. When he turned three, he left to find a herd of his own. This was a month or so before Strider was lost to the herd and the herd's lead mare, Esperanza, gave birth to a buckskin colt.
Wind wanted to take on a young stallion. One as old as he was or a little older, but without any luck, he found none. He decided to go after the herd from the first stallion he saw after his last disappointment. The herd was a bit large, and the mares seemed rugged and poorly treated. The stallion of the herd, seeing Wind, didn't need a challenge call. He ran straight to Wind, teeth bare and hooves flashing. His lead mare was right behind him to watch him fight. The looks in their eyes was unnatural. Evil, one would say.
The Phantom and his mare, Black Bird. Wind has herd of them before but thought that they were stories created to scare foals. The Phantom used brute force against opponents, so Wind, seeing that this was a life and death situation, it was no longer about the mares, it was about living to see another day, made a quick decision to out-smart him. The mares watched as Wind dodged the Phantom, even once or twice made the older stallion trip over his own legs. After what seemed like hours, the Phantom looked as if he was finished. Wind stood tall and pounded the ground with a front hoof. The Phantom took this as him mocking him and made one last attempt to take him down. Wind, at the last second, turned and lashed out, kicking right into the Phantom's right eye. The Phantom went down, but when he stood again, Wind reared and struck the ground, telling the Phantom once more to leave. The Phantom took off at a slow canter, and his lead mare went with him, but not before she bit a chunk out of the top of Wind's neck. It is now a large pink scar, and no more mane grows there.
His new herd slowly began to trust Wind and accepted him into the family, more than happy that the Phantom was gone, taking the pain and suffering with him. some of the younger mares did leave in a group together, but only to find a new herd with fewer horses. This was something the Phantom would not allow. It did not bother Wind, but he was happy to know that his first herd would not be so large after all.
All the mares began to love Wind and his unusual coloring, but Wind had his eyes on one mare. Dusk didn't spend her time admiring Wind, but rather to graze or keep watch on the foals. Every day, Wind would inch closer and closer to her until he was finally grazing beside her. Excited to be so close to her, and yet nervous at the same time. He wasn't paying attention and neither was she, and they bumped heads. From then on, they became closer to each other and she soon became his lead mare and she carried his foal. Although, their happiness did not last long.
One bad winter storm, the herd was in a forested area and Dusk went to check on the small group of mares with foals. They were a little ways from the herd, keeping the foals surrounded and around a few large bolders. It provided a good shelter from the snow and wind. Dusk was frozen by such a short trip and the mares begged her to stay with them to keep her warm. So she stayed with them.
Wind, not knowing that Dusk and the mares with foals were seperated from the herd, wanted to take everyone to some caves that would be of better protection. It was a twenty minute fight against the storm, but they got there and the herd quickly got comfortable in the large cave. Wind checked on the mares, but when he realized that some of them were missing, along with the foals, he searched every inch of the cave for Dusk. Searching the cave, and even going into the storm to search for her. His voice was silenced in the winter wind and his tracks were quickly being covered by the snow. He was nearly frozen when he retured to the cave, his head low and his heart hurting.
During the warmer days, he would stand on the tallest hill surrounding his grazing herd to keep an eye out, knowing that somewhere, Dusk was still out there and hoping that one day she will return to him.
