Biography:

Eerin was born in Ireland to a peasant family. Their young boy raised him since his mammy wouldn't let him nurse. The two of them were the best of buds any two-legged and horse could be, but fate didn't take to the pairing as much as they did. The family fell on hard times when a famine swept through their homeland. They had to sell Eerin, keeping his mother since she was more useful to them than he. Eerin was a gangly yearlin at this time and knew something was wrong when his lad came to him one night and wept on his neck, talking soft sweet things in his ear.  The next morning a man came with a wagon and after tying Eerin to the back, led him off.

The man brought him to an old rotting barn on the outskirts of town. This was the first time Eerin had ever been away from his old home, and was taking in all the sights, smells, and sounds. The man led him into the barn, the pungent smell of musty hay hitting Eerin's soft velvety nose. Eerin crinkled his nose and snorted as the man led him into a leaning stall. Eerin looked around a minute then turned around only to nearly jump out of his skin! There was a HUGE horse in the stall beside his. Eyes wide and long legs trembling with excitement and uncertainty, he nickered to the massive giant like horse. When the old stallion looked over at him, Eerin perked up and clacked his teeth as he slowly came up to him. After that small show of respect to the old stallion things changed drastically for both of them. Soon the man found out that he would no longer be able to put his old stud to work, unless the little pint of a fella was around. So when he started hitching Old George up he'd let out Eerin and let him tag along freely.

Everything was going fine and Eerin was growing like a weed, when one morning Old George couldn't get up from his spot in the sparce field. Eerin was scared and was trying his best to get his old friend on his large feet. George finally got the ecstatic colt to listen to him and lay down beside his old tired body. He explained alot of things to Eerin, including that he would soon take his final rest and that he would never have to carry another burden. Eerin couldn't help but cry, the big old draft drying the young colt's tears and talking calmly to him. When the man came out he immediately noticed what was happening to the old stud and shook his head in sorrow and pity. Eerin watched as he disappeared into the barn only to return a few moments later with his halter. Eerin jerked up and laid his ears back for the first time. George repremanded him for that and told him to go on. Eerin's face was etched with pain as he looked at his long time friend and what he came to know as a father. The man slipped the halter on Eerin and testingly tugged on the colt. Eerin longingly looked back at Old George, George smiled slightly his appearance becoming more tired like. Then the man tugged Eerin away, leading him to a cart and tying him behind it. He knew he wouldn't be able to get the colt to work now, with the memory of his old friend haunting him. He took him to the docks and sold him to a captian.

The captain was taking horses along the world's coasts and selling them at ports. It took many sick cold nights before Eerin was used to the unsettling rocking of the boat and the sickening smells where the horses were kept. On the voyage a couple of horses died from the trauma and state of living. Eerin got to see many different parts of a place called England, then Africa, and finally on his last leg of his sea voyage he was headed to a place called America. Eerin had been out to sea for coming on a year now. The rough motion of the boat giving him strong sturdy legs and made him solid on his feet. It took about two months to get to America. Eerin was now a sturdy hard weathered two year old. He had seen and lived with many different horses and many different places.

The captain unloaded all his horses at the port in Boston. Many young girls giggled when they saw the curly coated colt as they walked by. Never had they seen a curly coated horse. Eerin was tied up among the line of other horses. A pretty large crowd had formed, different people looking critically over the horses. Eerin had his own little crowd forming near him, which was making him slightly uneasy. The captain noticed this and was finally thinking he might be able to sell the unusual looking colt. After the day done, the highest offer for Eerin was three hundred dollars, which was mighty high for a horse. And seein how the captain had only paid a few pounds for the colt he was more than eager to sell the colt. The rich man who had bought him was getting him for his children. He chuckled to himself thinking about the talk around town that would be happening when his children drove this pony around.

Eerin was led to a large white house along with a few other horses from his shipment. Darker skinned people took care of him, washing and brushing the feeling and smell of the ship and sea right off of him. The bath felt so good to Eerin, making him rub his head on the grooms eagerly. That night he was fed the best meal he had ever had. He slept well except for the dreams of Old George that always seemed to haunt his young mind. He was awake before dawn and was trying to see and smell everything he could, sticking his neck out as far as his stall door would let it. Many of the rich man’s workers stopped by Eerin’s stall petting his soft face and messing with his curly mane. It wasn’t long before all the workers were calling him Curly. The days were the same most of the time. He had to stay in his stall and wasn’t let out at all, unless he was being led. This was starting to make him edgy until finally the rich man said he was ready. Eerin was curious when Al, one of his favorite workers, came in and led him out into the sunshine. Two other workers were holding some weird looking contraptions. Al tied him up to a post and motioned for the other men to bring the things up. Eerin spooked, throwing his head up and rolling his eyes a bit, his nostrils wide and snorting. Al grinned and put his gnarled feeling hand softly on Eerin’s smooth neck. The men came again, but stopped as soon as Eerin acted spooky. This process went on for about an hour until finally the others could bring up the tack with Eerin paying them any mind.

Over the next month the workers and Al worked with Eerin until they finally had him hitched up to a contraption on wheels. Eerin remembered Old George having to pull something like this, except it wasn’t as light and fragile looking as the one behind him. Al climbed up into the driver’s seat and clicked Eerin forward. Eerin’s floaty gait made him look elegant in his movement as he neared the house. It was time to see the reason he was bought. The rich man came out with three smaller humans covering their eyes beside him. The rich man said something and the smaller fellows revealed their eyes, the little lassies squealing in delight, to which Eerin shied slightly, but not noticeably except to Al’s trained eye. The little lad ran into the house and then suddenly showed up again and came up to me with something in his hand. It smelled utterly sweet and Eerin clacked his teeth then pulled up his upper lip in a smile as the sweet smell tingled up his nose. The little children squealed and giggled some more and the rich man laughed heartily before saying something and going back inside. Eerin looked back down at the lad’s hand and lipped up the sugar, shaking my head in pure delight of the taste.

Al drove me around town with the children in the back seat all day. All the folks we passed waved and stared after us. Eerin was soon the talk of the whole town, his floaty movement, his curly hair, and his overall character. Eerin lived happily there for sixteen of his years. The children had long grown up past the stage of riding their “pony” wagon anymore. Now the lasses were more interested in what dress they were going to wear and if the lad next door was to their liking or not. As for the lad he had plenty of mischief to get into and many young ladies to impress. Al seemed to be the only one who noticed the aging Curly. Then once again his world seemed to fall apart. Something the humans called “war” came and devastated the family. The rich man had to sell all his horses that weren’t being used… and that included Eerin. Al ponyed Curly beside him. They were headed to a bigger city. Al wanted to someone who was just right for his beloved Curly. Al spent the whole day talking to other folks, until he finally came and got Curly. There was a big wagon with two sturdy horses attached to it waiting. A young lad came and took the lead from Al, Eerin looked back at the old worker, his nostrils vibrating as a long nicker came out. Al had a single tear rolling down his old weathered face, with one last look he turned and disappeared into the moving crowd of people. Eerin looked back to the wagon, but suddenly stiffened as the lad just jumped up on his back. Eerin wasn’t so sure about that, he had only had a harness on his back, but the lad didn’t give him a chance to think about it and moved him forward along with the wagon. Eerin’s new family traveled for what seemed forever across large empty stretches of land. The two wagon horses weren’t very friendly and their size only helped bring on his bad dreams during the lonesome nights. One day Eerin could sense the family getting excited, they were almost to their claim. But fate didn’t want them to live there. Hollering Indians came flying from the hills on horseback. Eerin threw his head up and rolled his eyes as the lad suddenly lept off him and jumped on the wagon with his pap and ma. Suddenly the air was full with screams and hollers, bullets and arrows.

Eerin couldn’t handle it all and went bolting across the prairie. He escaped the ruckus but now he was even more alone. For a whole other year Eerin was by himself wondering aimlessly. He had a few encounters with the calvary, but he was able to evade them. When Eerin’s twentieth birthday was coming around he wondered if he’d ever have another true family. This was mainly fueled by his hidden worries. He had been becoming stiffer in his legs and his hearing would flee him sometimes. He knew if he went deaf or got where he couldn’t move well he’d be fair game for the predators.
