He was very cold towrds other animals that came to the spring but he never chased him away, knowing what it was like to struggle surviving.  Months after Fionn had left the springs three stallions come to the spring, at first Marco didn't like their pressents, he felt they would gang up on him and try to kick him out from the spring. But the stallions did nothing, he would have ignored them if Travis, the herds leader, hadn't walked over and started talking to him. Marco was annoyed but continued listening to him. He respected Travis' loyalty and desided to join his little band of stallions.
