*****Character and "The Story of the Pacing White Mustang" is based on an actual horse from the old west.*****
Intergrating him into the Spirit-Universe and into the Coaly Bay story was an idea I've had for a while now.

He and his mother joined the Cimarron herd when he was a tiny colt, Pacer was soon inseperable from his best friend, Strider. But, as both colts got older, they began to see each other as rivals. So, Pacer left the Cimarron herd and started his own herd near Texas. Pacer was different then all the other mustangs because he paced (a very fast walk) rather then galloped. He could keep up his pace for days without tiring. Because he was white, he was an easy target for the vaqueros. Each time Pacer saw a human approaching the herd, he'd gather everyone up and push them south. He always out-ran the vaqueros. When the vaqueros worked together and stationed a man on a fresh horse every 10 miles south, they forced Pacer to steadily lose his herd (no one in the herd could keep up with him after the long chase). Pacer finally had to go on alone. He eventually out paced the last vaquero, but Pacer was now alone, and he was thirsty. A lone vaquero noticed Pacer trot into a canoyn to get a drink from the river. When he came back out, the vaquero ambushed him and caught him with a rope, and managed to tie Pacer to a post. The man then brought back several of his friends to wrestle the furious horse into a corral. Pacer gave up when he realized he'd been caught. The men left Pacer some hay and water. For 9 days, Pacer stood still as a statue, and didn't touch the water or the hay. One the 10th day, he laid down and died.
His herd, meanwhile, had been dispersed among the US Cavalery, all except one dark bay mare and her newborn foal, who managed to illude the humans. She raised her foal, who was named Coaly Bay, until he was 3 months old before she was finally shot by some bear hunters. Coaly Bay lived on his own after that.
Relationship with Spirit:
Pacer was best friends with Strider when they were younger

HayleyWolf: It's a very good but sad story. Glad you like him! And
yes, he is open for cavalry offspring, but they have to be colts (he
has no surviving daughters). And they get to be brothers with Coaly
Bay ![]() |
