Bio:
*the story by Thomas Ernest Senton* Coaly Bay's story takes place in the Bitteroot mountains in Idaho. He is captured and trained. At first, Coaly Bay objects to the breaking like Spirit did; by bucking and throwing a fit. After he learns it doesn't work, he comes up with a brilliant scheme...he FAKES being lame. He limps oh-so-pathetically everytime a human approaches his paddock. He gets sold several times, and is finally sold to a group of bear hunters. He was purchased as bear bait and brought into the mountains (in the old days, lame horses were brought to the wilderness and shot, their carcass used as bear bait). They release him and he limps away to graze in the meadow beyond, and the hunters whistle to get his attention. When he picks up his head, the hunter tries to shoot him between the eyes, but Coaly Bay ducks at the last minute. He turns and gallops away into freedom, never to be seen again.
THIS WAS BASED ON A TRUE STORY.
*My story* Coaly Bay soon finds himself in the Cimarron Valley, where he meets Spirit's pretty little daughter. He walks brazenly past Spirit and begins flirting with Stormy right in front of her father. Spirit goes to attack him, but Coaly Bay just calmly dodges his every strike and finally leaves, promising to come back later. He does, and he takes Stormy out on a 'date', only to be caught by Spirit and chased away again. When Coaly Bay returns to warn Spirit that some wranglers are on their way, Spirit won't listen to him, and Stormy gets captured. Now, it's up to Coaly Bay to get Stormy back, and to teach Spirit a thing or two on tricking humans.
Coaly Bay is ashamed to tell anyone that his father was the famous Pacing White Mustang. He's ashamed of his father for giving in so easily rather then doing whatever it took to be free. This is why Coaly Bay takes such pleasure in getting captured, just so he can escape.
He knows that he and Spirit are cousins (their fathers were brothers), but Spirit doesn't know, and Coaly Bay doesn't want to tell him.
Because Coaly Bay was a real horse, he doesn't really belong to anyone, so I'm using him as my character. I always thought he'd fit perfectly in the Spirit universe.
