Biography:
An epidemic devastated Spain's horse popultion several years back and only a single herd of Andalusians survived. The single herd was kept at the Monastery of Cartuja being taken care of by the monks. Over the course of several decades the monks of the monastery who had owned the small herd of Andalusians had been forced to abandon their home. Wars, exile, and laws had caused the monks to leave behind everything that belonged to them and sadly the herd was one of the things left behind as well.
When it seemed all hope for the herd to survive was at a loss a clergyman by the name Pedro José Zapata came across the herd and took the horses away to a private ranch because he wanted to protect the breed. Pedro sent money to Cluny where the monks were located to pay for the herd. Now the herd was called Hierro del Bocado and was taken care of by Don Pedro, and his brother Don Juan José. The brothers took care of the herd until the death of Don Juan Jose and then the herd was passed on to the hands of his son until his own death years later. It was then that his widow, Doña María Romero, took over the control over the herd.
Some time later a man known as Don Vicente Romero García came into the picture and acquired part ownership of the herd. In recent years the herd was well protected and taken care of to ensure the revival of the precious breed. Though the ranch had seen a few foals over the years Dona Maria was especially eager for the arrival of what would be the ranch's newest addition. Dona Maria's favorite mare was expecting to give birth any day now. A few days later on a dark silent night the ranch welcomed a new member to the family a little filly. Dona Maria was thrilled with the young foal and named her Nyx. Over the next two years Nyx grew into a lovely young mare who had become Dona Maria's pride and joy. However, tragedy soon struck the ranch and changed Nyx's life forever.
Rogue bandits had stumbled across the ranch in hopes of stealing some of the horses for profit. It was late into the night and the bandits were able to sneak on to the ranch's grounds undetected. Everyone on the ranch was sleeping peacefully unaware of the dangers that were lurking nearby. The bandits had made their way inside one of the barns on the far side of the ranch. Inside the barn the bandits opened the first stall on the right and they quietly tried to put a halter on the horse in order to take it. The horse the bandits were trying to take was Nyx and upon the strange men entering her stall had become very frightened. Neighing loudly in fear Nyx was able to alarm the rest of the ranch to the intruders.
The bandits were wanting any of the horses at the ranch and it just so happened that Nyx was the unlucky horse that they had ended up picking. Dona Maria and the rest of the ranch staff had rushed to the scene as soon as they heard the commotion going on. Through the Dona Maria had been able to make it to the barn quickly so the bandits couldn't take any more horses. The bandits had already gotten away with Nyx and fled the ranch as soon Dona Maria and the staff had come running.
The bandits had taken Nyx to an abandoned location and were planning on sneaking her on a ship heading towards North America. The bandits were just having some diffculty arranging the trip though because of Spain's new law forbiding any of the Andalusians from being exported. But with sometime the bandits were finally able to get Nyx on a ship. Throughout the entire horrible experience Nyx had tried to keep her thoughts from her current situation and reflected on her time at her home, the ranch. She greatly missed her friends, her family, and Dona Maria. Nyx prayed and hoped that she would be rescued but, with her leaving on a ship soon the pending rescue seemed futile.
The day for Nyx to leave on the ship arrived quickly and her hope for returning to her home had vanished by then. It took the next few weeks for the ship to arrive in America and soon as the ship docked the bandits took Nyx to a secret location. They were meeting with some traders who were willing to pay high dollar for Nyx. After some negotiation the traders purchased Nyx from the bandits. Depressed and lonely Nyx began to wonder why such events were happening to her and if the nightmare would ever end.
Though new hope came to Nyx in the form of the U.S. cavalry as the they stumbled across the traders illegal business. The traders were arrested and their items confiscated and Nyx was taken to the U.S. cavalary base by the soldiers. Upon arriving to the base the soldiers who had come to find the traders informed the Colonel about them and their illegal business. After discussing the traders the Colonel then turned his attention to the young mare the soldiers had brought back. Noting that she was different the Colonel had Nyx placed in one of the stables and had stated she wasn't to be used as a cavalry horse.
Fate seemed to take a new turn as Nyx took in the surroundings of her new home. Though she had gone through some dark times and was faraway from her beloved ranch. Nyx had accepted she probably was never going to return to her former home so she plans to look towards the future and wonders what other challenges and adventures await her in this new place and in this new land.
