Bio:
Kateri, lead mare of the East River herd, was just about to give birth to her first foal. It was mid- winter. There was no sun to be seen, even though it was only early evening. The wind was blowing fiercely outside her branch hut she had found, just to give birth. The ground was soft with fluffy snow and old pine needles. The mare lay against the old pine tree, her breathing slightly labored as she began going into labor. After about ten minutes of heaving and pushing, a small foal lay at the foot of where she lay. It was covered in a translucent sack, as most foals were when they were born. Kateri turned to lick it clean once it was free from the protective sack. The bay mare turned to cover the foal from the harsh winds that were finding ways through the tree hut. She nudged the foal for him to stad up and try out his new little legs, and he did; wobbling around the small area the best he could.
When morning came, Kateri took the foal back to the rest of the herd. It was still completely dark out, so it was a bit hard to see for the new foal. The bay mare guarded her foal from the fierce wind and snow that seemed to slice through the air and hit them like tiny needles. Once they made it back, Kateri seeked out Altair, the lead stallion. Once he was found, the dun paint looked over his lead mare, then the new foal, and perked his ears in acceptance and admiration. They were taken to where the rest of the herd was, standing behind a large group of trees, all huddled together to keep warmth. The new foal, a colt to be exact, was taken care of more delicately. He was placed in the middle of where the herd was, Kateri laying at his side to help keep his body heat. The colt's name was not determined the night he was born, however he was a few days later, once the storm died down and the herd returned to its natural business.
Kateri decided to name the little bay colt Enepay. Enepay, now a few days old and used to his new legs, ran about the herd and the snow, playing with the other foals of the herd. Most of the time, Enepay would spend by his mothers side. Despite the fact that he loved playing with the other foals and herd members, he was very protective of his dam, and felt that by constantly being by her side, he was helping protect her.
