There is very little known about Windago except she was born on a stormy night in the woods near Alma's herd. Her parents were loners and when she was yearling they died, forcing her to go into the herd. There, she met Esperanza and became best friends with her. When they reached Cedar's herd after a long pilgrimage down the mountains because of a snowstorm,  Esperanza met Strider and fell in love. A short time later they dissappeared because of a huge storm. Windago was deeply traumatized by this and  went searching for them. Years later found them with their own herd. At first, she wanted the herd to follow traditional "nomad" customs and have Strider be a mate to her and all the other mares, but Strider made a new way of herd customs and let stallions into the herd if they would not try to overthrow him. Windago liked this idea. In the herd, she met a beautiful mare named Silver Moon and the two became very close. She was also present when Esperanza gave birth to her most famous foal; Spirit. Windago often helped take care of Spirit and tried to comfort Esperanza when Strider dissappeared. When Spirit became leader, Windago became mates with a stallion named Wildfire and became pregnant with a foal named Phantom. Wildfire was killed by a cougar and Windago mourned him greatly. Windago continued to take care of the foal herself. Phantom soon left the herd, and Windago felt like she had lost everything. Spirit and the others comforted her and she soon felt better.
