Name: Calico (called Spotted Wind by her old tribe)
Gender: Mare
Age: 4
Breed: mustang / ???
Sire: unkown
Dam: Swan's River
Stallion (crush): None
Foals: None
Personality: Gentle, sweet, caring. She's a sweet little thing, and her gentle nature make others warm up to her. She can be friendly if she chooses, but she judges from a distense before she decideds to try and like you, or just give you the cold shoulder. She's more willing to befriend mares then she is stallions, but thats more because she questions the stallions movtives behind befriending her. Calico doesn't mind being treated like a pet by the men at the post, but she misses being able to see trees, grass, and the rivers of the wild. Seeing dust and mountains all the time gets old.
History:
Her mother was the favorite horse of the cheif of a Lakota tribe (Little Creeks), Eagle's High. One night, Swan's River dissapered. Eagle's High was devastated, until Swan's River came back a week later. Over time, the cheif noticed his mare growing rather round, and Swan's River was found out to be pregnet. Swan's River later gave birht to a little filly. Since the filly was running in circles around her mother (literaly) as soon as she could walk, Eagle's High named her Spotted Wind.
Swan's River raised her as any mare would, and Spotted Wind was soon as gentle and well-behaved as the other horses.
However, one night a group of white-men rode their horses into the tribe's camp, knocking down tents and herding the horses away, lassoing the ones they wanted and leaving the rest to go back to the tribe. Spotted Wind was among the ones that were caught.
The men sold the horses off to army posts, until Spotted Wind was the only one left. She took longer to sell because the men charged a higher price for her (just because they wanted to). One army post finnaly decided to pay the price, and Spotted Wind was sold.
The genrel in charge re-named her Calico, and she became a bit fond of the odd-sounding name. The men at the post became very fond of the black mare, and Calico became more of a pet, rather then a mount. She was still ridden, but not as much as the other horses.
Then the genrel found a new use for her.
One day some men came back from a meeting with a nearby indian tribe, and reported what the indians had shared. When the indians had trouble taming a stallion, they'd tie him to one of the tribe's gentlest mares. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.
The army post had recently brought in a mustang stallion, and he was currently tied to the post, so the genrel decided to test this method on the new horse.
Instead of tieing him to a mare, however, he left the stallion tied to the post, and put the mare in the pen.
The mare he chose was Calico.
At first, the stallion was more interested in trying to pursuade Calico to help free him and become his lead mare, but Calico kept saying no. Eventuly, she talked him into coraperating with the white-men. At least a little. The genrel was pleased that the method worked, in at least calming the stallions down a little, and he used the method more. Sometimes he'd use different mares, but he used Calico the most for this job, and she became known as the posts "gentler horse".
Calico doesn't mind her job, but she's not all to fond of being hit on by stallions so much. It makes her a bit flusterd when they suggest she become their lead mare.
Relation to Spirit:
Her mother belonged to the cheif of Little Creek's tribe.
