Kovu

My spotted cub.

Kovu was sitting on a smooth, large rock in the savanna. He sighed heavily, for that he missed his love very dearly, Kiara. She died on a hunt for some gazelle, but apparently she tripped and stampedes of elephants were running away from an animal chasing them. They flattened the life out of her, and since that day she was never able to give birth to three beautiful cubs that they were going to have. He was too miserable to do anything, and Simba and Nala tried to help much as possible. Nothing worked, so they decided to let them be. Kovu looked up toward the horizon. He cocked his head from side to side. Something was in the bushes. So he got up and walked toward it. The bushes started to move again, and when he looked over it, he saw a gorgeous cheetah hiding.

“Uh, hello there.” He said with a crooked smile. The cheetah didn’t reply with an answer. She just stared at the towering lion over her. In her mind she thought he was good looking. She shook her head from staring off into space and answered, “Oh, hello there. Was I bothering you?” she grinned in embarrassment. “No, no. You weren’t bothering me at all. So what’s your name?” he said looking down at her. Cheetahs are smaller than lions, but she was pretty decent for her size. “Oh, my name is Red Sand. What’s yours?”  “My name is Kovu. I am king of Pride Rock.” He said in a proud voice. The cheetah just smiled at him. “Kovu is an interesting name. So king, what do you want to do?” she said as he walked with her. “Well, we can chase things, like birds and all of that.” He replied as he ran off. Red Sand passed him, and the two went off to chase little animals.

Everyday Kovu and Red Sand met each other at the same place near the smooth rock. No one knew they were together and did some things for fun with each other. But one it hit mating season, Kovu was a bit nervous. Red Sand read his feelings. She knew he wanted to mate with her, so told him it was okay. So the two walked off into the savanna together that day.

Red Sand’s stomach was growing bigger. She was going to give birth to one cub. Kovu found a den for her to stay while he was at Pride Rock. Still, no one knew that they were mates. After a few weeks, Red Sand gave birth to a girl cheetah- lion. In ways, the cub didn’t look weird. It had strong muscles like Kovu, but it was skinny like her mother. She had a bendy spine to run fast like a cheetah and had nice little spots. Her eyes were green like her fathers. Her claws hung out like a cheetah’s and didn’t retract like some other cats do. The cub was fine looking. Red Sand gave the girl cub a name- Zip Wind. The legs on that cub can carry her very fast, and Zip Wind was joyful to be around. She never had gotten to see her father, because Kovu was too worried that anyone could notice him going to meet his mate and cub. And would when someone found out he had a cheetah- lion cub, they will kill the guts out of him.

One day in the little den that Zip Wind was in, she asked her mother curiously, “Momma, who’s my dad?” Red Sand just blanked into space. It was time to tell her she was part lion. “Your father… is Kovu. He is a lion and is King of Pride Rock.” Zip Wind cocked her head. Is this why she was stronger and more powerful than the other cheetah cubs she plays with? So she got up and headed toward Pride Rock. She ran fast, and Red Sand was yelling her name. It wouldn’t work. She was already too curious to go see who her father was, and Red Sand caught up with her. Kovu was standing tall and proud on the rock, looking out and caring for his land. Then, he spotted two big cats running toward him. He gasped. Red Sand and her cub can get killed out here if anyone spotted them. “Red Sand! What in the world are you doing here?” he shouted to his love. Zip Wind climbed up the steep rock, and she stood in front of her father and smiled deeply. Red Sand climbed the rock too, and in no time she was up there as well. “Your little one ran off to see you….” Red Sand replied as she breathed fast. Chasing a cub is not easy. Kovu looked down at Zip Wind. “She’s…..?” he said as he hesitated for answer. “Yes, she is your daughter. Her name is Zip Wind.” Red Sand said as she sat next to him. Kovu cocked his head. He had never seen a cheetah- lion cub before, but it was amazing and beautiful to look at. He felt a joyness swoop in him. He felt proud to be a father of a strange breed. But then he remembered Kiara, and she is probably proud at him that he is no longer sad for her death. She is probably glad to see him happy and not wasting life on depression. He nuzzled Red Sand and told them to go back to the den before anyone can catch them. Red Sand and Zip Wind climbed down the rock steadily. When they walked toward the den, the mother cheetah cocked her ears from side to side. A noise was coming right at the two, and it was a jeep. A man flew the door open and got out a gun. Red Sand noticed this so she said to Zip Wind, “Run, run!!!” Zip Wind obeyed her mother and ran as fast as she could to the den. A fire shot crackled through the air. Red Sand was dead lying on the ground. Kovu had seen this from the rock, and he cried in horror. Zip Wind did the same thing. They both ran to her, but it was already late. The men carried the cheetah to the jeep, and were going to use her fur to make a coat. “What are we going to do now, Daddy?” said the princess softly. Kovu shrugged, and the two sat down with heads hanging sadly.

After a few moments, Kovu lead Zip Wind quietly to Pride Rock. It was already becoming night, so everyone was asleep not to notice the little cub. Zip Wind cuddled with Kovu and the two slept for the rest of the night.
