A Note From The Author
Hello, reader!
I have a few things to let you know, but before you skip down to the story DO NOT! It won't make any sense if you don't read this first.
Ok, first off, thank you for at least looking here, I hope you'll want to read on and comment, thank you!
Second; This fanfic is called Cub Adventures for a reason; it's an idea I came up with about 2 years ago, and has only made it to paper now.
The idea of this story is that it takes place at no certain time, but Simba, Kovu, Kiara and Nala are still all cubs! See? If you had read on, the 'fic wouldn't have made any sense.
Now, I know what you're thinking, "What? You can't do that! It makes no sense. Plus, how does Kiara even exist if Simba and Nala are still cubs?" Yes, I know, it's confusing. Just... don't think about it, and enjoy the story.
The third and final thing I have to mention is the good guys and bad guys; Zira, Scar and the hyenas remain the bad guys here. Of course, the cubs are the main protagonists, but as far as adults go, Mufasa, Sarabi and Sarafina are the good *adult* guys. So, yes, that's just about it.
Now, I know by this stage your probably thinking, "PFF. Dum fanfic. In fact, dum doesn't even cover it. Where's that Harry Potter book?" I ask you to give it a chance; THEN you can criticise in the comments ;)
This is a lot shorter than my first fanfic; Cub Adventures 1: The Secert Caverns, this is mainly because I had no idea where it was going and I just played around with a few loose ideas because all my thoughts were all on Rebekah_the_Lion's idea for the third one X3
I was so excited I just decided to rush this one, but I did try to keep the storyline at least partially together XD
Because of this, there are no pictures as of yet, I'm afraid :c I'll put them in as I draw them XD
Chapter 1
Kovu was lying asleep in the Outlands. It had been a hot night so he had decided to sleep outside, away from his brother, sister and mother.
A sudden noise awoke him, Kovu ears pricked up, and then he opened his eyes. A bright light jolted him awake and he lifted his head with a, “Huh?” of surprise.
Kovu looked up to the sky in the direction of the bright light. He watched as the bright light glowed from behind Pride Rock.
“Morning?” he wondered. Then he realised that the sun didn’t rise behind Pride Rock, it rose in front of it.
He jumped to his paws and gasped, what was it? He could see the moon clearly above him, so what was this light?
Suddenly, a bright ball came from the centre of the glow; it looked like a star but bigger and brighter.
Kovu stared in awe as it blazed over the Pride Lands and over the Outlands, himself included, turning the sky pale blue instead of black. It landed somewhere far off and landed in the ground. The light died for a moment then there was a small explosion of fire and dust.
Kovu stood for a moment longer then ran into the termite mound, “Mother! Mother!” he called.
Zira was lying asleep with Nuka and Vitani nearby. She lifted her head, “Kovu?”
“Mother, I just saw a star flying through the sky!”
Zira stared at him, “What?”
Nuka snorted, “A flying star! Yeah, right, termite!”
“Silence!” growled Zira, “Kovu, flying stars a perfectly normal; rare, but normal.”
“Really?” said Kovu in a disappointed tone.
“Yes.” said Zira, “Now, go back to sleep.” She put her head down again and closed her eyes.
“I can’t sleep now.” Kovu looked annoyed with himself for getting hyped up over something that was perfectly normal, and annoyed further that he now probably wasn’t going to be able to get back to sleep because of it.
Nuka grumbled something about The Chosen One, then he paused, after some thought he grinned, “Erm, Mother, I’ll take Kovu for a short walk around the ‘Lands until he can get back to sleep. Ok?”
Zira opened her eyes and nodded, “Don’t stay out too long.”
Nuka sneered as he knew she was much more concerned about Kovu than himself, but not for long.
He walked Kovu out of the cave and further out into the outlands. When he was out of earshot of Zira and the rest of the Pride he casually asked, “So, what did this flying star look like?”
“I thought you didn’t believe me?” Kovu inquired.
Nuka shrugged, “I was just kidding around.”
Kovu paused then replied, “It was bigger than a regular star, and it burned brightly in a blue light…” He was suddenly abruptly cut off by Nuka.
“Oh, it was a blue star!”
“Does it matter? Mother said…”
“Mother said that flying stars were perfectly normal. Look at them, though! Stars are white not blue!”
Kovu looked up and realised Nuka was right.
Nuka grinned, time to out his plan into action, “You know, Scar tells me all the time to how blue flying stars are magical.”
“Magical?” Kovu gasped, “How magical?”
“They can grant any wish you want!” Nuka grinned, “They could… They could make you a king!”
“I’m already gonna be a king.” Kovu said.
Nuka shrugged, “Why wait?”
Kovu’s eyes widened, “So, if I could find it…”
“…You could rule all of ‘Lands, every Pride in Africa, even!”
Kovu bounced up and down with excitement, “Can I go now? I can tell mother and…”
“Oh, no!” said Nuka, “Don’t tell mother, or she might not let you go! Go tomorrow morning, as soon as you can. I’ll tell her you went to spy on the Pride Landers’ or something.”
Kovu grinned, “Thanks, Nuka!”
“You’re welcome. I’m going back home now, see you later, when you’re King!” And with that, Nuka turned and stalked away, chuckling to himself, “Or when I’m King…” he added silently to himself.
Chapter 2
Nala and Kiara were both drinking at the watering hole.
“You know,” said Nala, “I think we should go to the secret caverns today. I wanna go somewhere that’s not dumb.”
“Yeah,” said Kiara, “I’d like to try some swimming, I’m not too good at it,”
She trailed off when she heard someone say, “Psst!”
“D’you hear that?” she asked.
“Hear what?”
“It sounded like someone saying ‘psst!’.”
“Probably just your imagination.” muttered Nala.
“PSST!” Surprised, Nala jumped.
“And yours? I don’t think so.” Kiara turned around, “Hey, who’s there?”
She saw a brown tail stick up from the long grass, “Pumbaa?”
Then a face appeared, “Oh, Kovu! What are you doing in the Pride Lands? It’s dangerous!”
Kovu glanced around, fully aware of the danger, “Where’s Simba?” he whispered.
“He’s still in bed. It’s really early, you know.” Nala tipped her head, “What do you want?”
Kovu glanced around one more time, “Meet me near the elephant graveyard, bring Simba and I’ll tell you there! Come when the sun reaches Pride Rock.” and with that he dashed backwards into the brush and ran off.
“You know, Kovu is a great friend and all but sometimes he can be a bit…” She rolled her paw around the side of her head and whistled.
Nala giggled, “Like Simba! He can be a bit crazy too… Come on, we’d better find him and see what exactly Kovu wants.”
* * * * *
Later, the cubs found themselves at the edge of the elephant graveyard, waiting for Kovu.
“Huh.” muttered Simba, “I can smell hyenas. And it’s cold here.”
“Cold?” scoffed Kiara, “It’s warm enough for me.”
“Might have something to do with Simba falling in the watering hole.” muttered Nala, “Which is why we’re late. I hope we haven’t missed Kovu.”
“Why would we? He was so desperate to tell us something, I doubt he would have wandered off.” said Kiara.
Simba shivered and Nala moved closer to him, “When you dry, it’ll be fine.” she said.
Kovu appeared shortly after, “Sorry.” he said, “I just wanted to be sure.”
“Sure of what?” asked Nala.
“Sure of where the shooting star landed.”
“A shooting star?” asked Simba, “I’ve seen one of those.” said Simba, “Please don’t tell me you’ve dragged us out here for that- they’re perfectly normal.”
“Not this one!” insisted Kovu, “It was blue! So that means it is magic!”
Kiara said, “I saw it too but Rafiki says…” She was interrupted by the cubs bursting out laughing.
A few metres away, behind an elephant skull, Shenzi, Banzai and Ed watched the cubs.
“A magic star?” said Banzai.
“I think the cub’s taken a few too many hits on the head!” said Shenzi, knocking her own head in impersonation.
Ed laughed.
Banzai sniggered too and then said, “But suppose the kid is right? Let’s listen to him, see what he has to say.”
“Yeah, and if he’s wrong, we eat him!” Shenzi barked. The hyenas laughed.
A few metres back, the cubs had stopped laughing as Kovu said, “I’m serious! Nuka says so.”
“Nuka always says so.” muttered Simba.
“But think about it!” said Kovu, “If this thing is magic-which it is- then we’d be able to become kings!”
Kiara and Nala cleared their throats in disgust, “Queens.” said Nala.
“Yeah, sure, whatever… But we could do anything!” Kovu jumped up, “Please, guys, you have to come with me to find it!”
Simba, Nala and Kiara looked at their paws in thought.
“Well…” said Simba.
“What if he IS telling the truth?” wondered Kiara.
“We COULD do anything…” thought Nala.
“I’m in.” said Simba.
“Me too.” said Nala.
“Me three!” said Kiara, not wanting to be left out.
“Then, what are we waiting for?” Kovu sprang away, “Come on!”
Chapter 3
The cubs had been walking for hours, “My paws hurt.” Simba said.
“It’s more than my paws that hurt.” groaned Nala.
A good bit behind them, the hyenas were feeling the same, “Seriously,” said Shenzi, “this stone-thing better be worth it. Think Scar will like it?”
Banzai nodded, “How could a future King not love a wish-granting star?”
The hyenas planned to give the star to Scar as a present, and in return he was bound to give them anything they wanted.
Banzai looked at the cubs ahead, “I’m hungry.” he whined, “Think we could pick off one of the cubs without the others noticing?”
Shenzi frowned at him, “Um… Duh! Don’t you think you would notice if Ed suddenly disappeared?”
“Well, of course! But I’m smarter.”
“Okay, then where’s Ed?”
Banzai looked around, “Huh? Ed?”
Shenzi sat down with a smug look on her face, Banzai walked on ahead, “Ed!”
Suddenly, Ed popped out of a hole in the ground right in front of Banzai, “AAH!” Banzai leaped back and Ed and Shenzi fell down in stitches of laughter.
“It’s not funny!” barked Banzai.
Shenzi stopped laughing suddenly, “Oh, hey look! They’re going into a cave.”
Banzai snorted, “Cubs can’t walk for long. Come on; let’s go get something to eat.”
The hyenas left the cubs then. Inside the cave Kovu’s ears were sticking straight up, “You ever got that feeling that you’re being watched?”
“Sometimes…” said Simba, “Why?”
“Cos I got that feeling now.” said Kovu. He picked a few termites out of a hole in the cave wall, “Do you want some?” he asked the group.
Nala and Kiara grimaced but Simba stretched out his paw and ate one, he gulped then said, “They taste weird.”
Kovu ate the rest, “They taste fine to me.”
“That’s because you’re so used to them…” muttered Nala, she yawned, “Come on, let’s get some sleep then we’ll continue.”
She raised her head suddenly, “Hey, Kovu, where exactly are we going?”
“Oh, I forgot to tell you; just to the mountains that are covered in that white sand.”
“You mean snow.” said Simba.
“Yeah, anyway, that’s where the star landed.”
“I hope,” said Kiara, “You’re not planning on going up the mountain? It’d take days. Weeks even!”
“Well, no.” said Kovu, “The star landed at the base, not on the actual mountain.”
“Fair enough,” said Simba, “Okay, now let’s go to sleep.”
Chapter 4
“Look! Look! We made it!” Kovu jumped up and down around the base of the mountain, “We’re here! We’re here!” he cried.
Simba rolled his eyes, “Yeah, yeah… Where’s the star?”
Kovu stopped jumping; he glanced about, “Where is my star…?”
“YOUR star?” boomed a voice, “Who said it was YOUR star?”
The cubs jumped and scrambled behind a rock; which was measly cover for the four of them.
Shenzi, Banzai and Ed emerged from the forest of rocks beneath the mountain. In his mouth Banzai held a small glowing stone, no bigger than a pebble.
“The star!” gasped Simba, “Give it back!” he snarled jumping from behind the rock.
“I thought it would be bigger…” said Nala.
“This is only part of it,” said Shenzi, “The rest was just rock. But this part,” she gestured at the rock with her paw, “this part is the magical part!”
Kovu jumped out too, “Give it back!”
Banzai waved and said in a muffled voice, “Hi, Kovu! How’s Scar?”
Kovu ignored him and growled at Shenzi, Simba was disappointed since Kovu’s growl seemed closer to a roar than his was.
Shenzi grinned, “If you want it, then you’ll have to come and get it!”
She pulled Banzai around and they both took off with Ed behind.
Kovu, Simba, Nala and Kiara all gasped and took off after them. The hyenas were much faster, but were slowed down by the boulders and branches that the cubs could easily slip under.
They ran into a gorge where Kovu swiftly found a ledge where he ran alongside the hyenas, free of obstacles’ on the path.
Banzai noticed Kovu running beside him, “Oh!” he said, “Shenzi, catch!”
Banzai threw the stone and Shenzi got it between her teeth.
Simba jumped up and grabbed a root hanging from the opposite ledge, throwing himself up on to it, he ran alongside Shenzi.
The two hyenas began throwing the stone between each other, constantly keeping the stone away from the cubs.
“I’ve had enough of this!” cried Nala and both she and Kiara bit Ed hard in his short tail.
Ed howled and tripped up, catching Shenzi and Banzai in his flurry.
They were almost at the end of the gorge and all three hyenas tumbled off the edge and into the pool below.
The cubs laughed in victory as the three hyenas pulled themselves from the pool.
Shenzi shook herself and laughed back, “Ha! We’ve still got this!” she held up what she thought was the stone, it was actually a fish.
She soon realised and threw it down looking about frantically for the stone.
“I think this is much better!” said Kovu, holding up the stone.
The three hyenas growled but were stopped from going back by the water, snarling they disappeared into the surrounding trees.
The cubs cheered and then Kovu said, “Let’s try making a wish!”
Simba gazed at the stone, “Try something simple first of all.”
“Why?” asked Kovu.
“Because how are you going to know that you’re King until we get home?”
Kovu nodded, held the stone and said, “I wish for… Some zebra!”
Nothing happened.
“You’re doing it wrong…” said Nala, taking the stone from him she cleared her throat and said, “Stone, make some antelope appear!”
Again, nothing happened.
The cubs ears drooped, “Is it broken?” wondered Kovu.
Kiara sighed, “No… I just don’t think it was ever magic.”
The three cubs stared at her, “But it flew in a blue glow!” said Simba.
Kiara looked embarrassed then she said, “Last night, I saw the stone flying too… But I went straight to Rafiki. He says it’s perfectly normal for this to happen when a stone has been flying low and fast for some time. He says the blue fire is just fire that simply looks blue. It’s something to do with what the stone burns with.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Kovu demanded.
Kiara shrugged, “I tried back at the graveyard but you wouldn’t listen.”
Kovu sighed, “Damn it…” he muttered. He put the stone down on a rock and walked away.
“Oh well,” said Nala walking alongside, “We’re not bored anymore, are we?”
Kovu nodded solemnly, “No, I guess not…”
Suddenly they heard a groaning like someone trying to push something heavy.
The cubs stopped, and so did the groaning.
“Hello?” said Simba, looking about the gorge, “Who’s there?”
For a moment there wasn’t an answer then a voice came, “Hello? Help me! I’m over here!”
The cubs followed the stranger’s calling to a pile of stones, Simba peered inside then jumped back in surprise, “It’s a cub!” he gasped.
The others began to push the slabs of rock from the hole where the cub lay.
Once he was out, he said, “Oh, thank you! I’ve been trapped in there for days, and I couldn’t get out on my own!”
“Who are you?” asked Kovu, “Are you Pride Lander or Outlander?”
The cub shook his head, “Neither. My pride lives on the boarder of the Pride Lands, my name’s Malka!”
Simba shook his head, “Malka! I barely recognised you!”
Malka turned, “Simba!” he looked at Nala, “And Nala too!”
The cubs touched noses. Kovu and Kiara exchanged glances, “Er… Someone want to fill us in?”
Simba turned to Kovu, “Malka got lost in the Pride Lands once before when he wandered too far from his Pride. The Pride Landers helped him get home.”
Kovu nodded, “Oh, I see.”
“Are you lost again?” asked Nala.
“No…” muttered Malka then he sighed, “Well, yeah…”
Nala shook her head and laughed, “Come on and we’ll get you home… again.”
“I was following a shooting star, and then the rocks fell on me. I was ucky I didn’t get crushed. I thought the shooting star was magic…”
Simba cut him off, “A shooting star?”
“Magic?” scoffed Kiara, “Don’t be silly, Malka!”
The cubs laughed and walked away from the gorge on to the Pride Lands.
When they’d gone, Shenzi scrambled back up the cliff again and lifted the stone, “Ah-ha! Now who’s dumb, huh?”
Chapter 5
Back at the Outlands, the three hyenas presented Scar with the stone, “See? It’s magic!”
Scar stared at it, then he bared his teeth and threw the stone away, “Do you take me for a fool?” he roared, “No stone is magic, that’s just a myth!”
The hyenas stammered but before they could say anything Scar gave a mighty roar. When he opened his eyes again, the hyenas were gone.
Outside, Shenzi growled, “I’ll get those cubs!” she said.
“Yeah,” said Banzai, “On a silver platter!”
Ed laughed and licked his lips.
The End.
