Children of the Savannah
Day with Dad
Time had passed since the return of the true king and the overthrow of tyranny during the Battle of Fire. With the droughts' end and sensible rule the land had returned to all of it's glory. For all the trees that had been destroyed two had grown in their place. Time had changed things for Simba and friends. Since Timon had married a meerkat called Tabia and becoming a father he changed. While still fun loving he was responsible and level yet still with his talent for jokes. Pumba had accept the change, he himself had become one of Simba's trusted emissaries, daily going about the kingdom on royal business. To the children of Timon and Simba he was Uncle Pumba, someone who they could have fun with and who was always there to listen to them. For the three friends from the jungle life was good.
In the pale morning light Kopa raced through the grass surrounding Pride Rock, the sun making his fur shimmer like gold. On his back sat a meerkat kit, Sudi the youngest son of Timon and Tabia. While Kopa knew all of their children it was Sudi who was his best friend as the other three kits preferred to spend time with other meerkats. Above them flew Zazu's son Akil, the oldest of Zazu's five chicks with his mate Mert. The trio were firm friends and were often found sharing adventures and occasionally in mischief. In contrast to his father, Kopa did not have a talent for trouble, though he did have a head for heights which brought a different raft of concerns. After all it was a heck of long drop from some of the trees. Sudi was similar to his father in appearance with a too much courage for his own good. Akil was the opposite of a Zazu in personality, with a fun loving nature and talent for story telling which often led to some very tall tales.
Jumping onto a rock Kopa let out a loud roar, his eyes falling on the path that led away from his home. While home was fun he had explored the area a lot, turning to his friends he grinned.
“How about we explore further? Now we have permission to wonder alone,” Kopa said turning to his friends.
“Defiantly, this place is boring,” Sudi yawned in reply.
“How about we go down to the river? I've heard that's a great place to explore,” Akil suggested.
“Great idea Akil,” Kopa replied while Sudi nodded enthusiastically.
Filled with excitement Kopa and Akil set off, their paw and wings stretching as they tried to match the other's speed. Running through the lush grass they passed herds of gazelle and zebra. Seeing the young prince some of the adults smiled fondly while some of the foals raced with Kopa and Akil. Swooping down Akil picked Sudi up putting him on the back of a young stallion.
“This is great” yelled Sudi, gripping onto his mount's mane .
“Wait till I run faster kid, then tell me how you find the ride!”
Looking up at his friend Kopa roared as zebra increased his speed, causing Kopa and Akil to lag behind. Sudi felt his breath taken, the adrenaline surging through his veins. Suddenly the zebra skidded to an abrupt halt causing him to fall forward onto the zebra's neck. Arriving at the zebra Kopa and Akil looked at the creature with slight annoyance. Flying down Akil lifted Sudi from the zebra's back and back onto Kopa's. Tossing his head the zebra trotted off to rejoin his heard while Kopa and Akil looked ahead at the mighty river that weaved it's way through the kingdom.
Walking down to the river the trio's eyes were like saucers, their senses taking in all the sights and smells around them. Vultures, flamingos, elephants and other drank from the clear water while long scaly crocodiles lazed in the sun and the elephants stood on in the water. Climbing onto a rock Kopa and Sudi dived in. Under the water they looked around at the fish that swam around them. Then a pair of eyes looked at them and the long body of an adult crocodile came onto view. Seeing the reptile the pair surfaced, coughing up water and taking in gulps of air.
“Well well now what do we have here, three young mischief makers I believe,”the crocodile said flashing his teeth.
“Morning Buzubi, meet my friends Akil and Sudi,” Kopa replied as a slightly smaller crocodile swam up behind them.
“So we finally get the meet the three of you without your parents,” the second crocodile said swimming up behind Akil.
“We have been given permission, besides I am a prince, I can do what I like Sobeck,” Kopa replied confidently.
“I suppose you can Kopa,” Sobeck laughed while his father Buzubi rolled his eyes. “I bet your parents wouldn't be too happy if they saw you now though.”
“They couldn't do anything, my Dad talks to the both of you everyday,” Akil replied ruffling his tail feathers.
“Fair point that,” Buzubi said.
“So what are the three of you up?” Sobeck asked flicking his tail.
“Just exploring,” Kopa replied.
“We are looking for our first adventure away from home and out parents,” Sudi replied bravely.
“Adventure is it. Dad and I are off on river patrol of the river.........Do you three fancy coming along for the ride on our backs?” Sobeck asked circling them.
“What ride on your back?” Sudi asked an awe.
“If you are brave enough,” Sobeck replied daring the youngsters to resond.
“Sobeck hold your zebras son they are very young,” Buzubi began.
“I'm brave enough,” Kopa replied climbing onto Sobeck's back.
“I'm coming to,” Subi replied climbing onto Buzubi's back.
“Well I'm not missing out,” Akil said joining Sudi.
Looking at the youngsters Buzubi groaned inwardly, cursing his son's bright idea and praying none of the youngster's fathers saw them. Respected though he was, Buzubi was well aware the potential reactions. Going down the river Kopa, Akil and Sudi watched the happenings on the banks with interest. Vultures watched the river closely, through the foliage they caught sighted of a leopard with two cubs, birds bathed in the shallows while wilder beast, warthog and many other drank from the clear water. Reaching a piece of bank Kopa saw a large group of crocodiles laying in the sun while other lay like logs in the water. Seeing Buzubi and Sobeck the crocodiles seemed to wake up, their attention fixed on the pair and the cubs. As Buzubi and Sobeck conversed Kopa, Sudi and Akil received a close up view of their teeth, thankful they were safe from harm. Leaving the crocodiles Sobeck and Buzubi continued on their way.
Standing looking over the river, Simba and Zazu did a double take as their eyes landed on their sons both utterly flabbergasted.
“Looks like we are in hot water,” Buzubi muttered, indicating with his head to Simba and Timon.
“HI DAD”!” Kopa called waving a paw.
“HI KOPA,” Simba called back, his eyes filled half with amusement, half with concern.
“SEE YOU AT HOME, DAD” Akil shouted grinning at the less than happy look on his father's face.
At this Zazu shot his son a glare before turning away with Simba, both thinking the same thing, whose bright idea was that? Seeing their father's looks Kopa and Akil burst out laughing. As the sun began to sink set on the horizon Sobeck and Buzubi took the cubs back to the section of river where they had met them. To their surprise they found Simba and Zazu waiting for them the latter glaring at the two crocodiles.
“I ought to have the pair of you sacked for this, what were you thinking?” Zazu snapped.
“Rreeellaxxx Zazu they were safe, besides they chose to take the ride,” Sobeck replied rolling his eyes.
“That is beside the point. The three of them are to young to fully understand the potential consequences.”
“That's not fair Dad I knew what I was doing,” Akil replied angrily.
“Yeh Zazu we know about crocs,” Kopa replied flicking his tail.
“Easy Zazu we have both had a shock but no one was hurt, we may not have done it but it was an experience,” Simba said steeping between his son and adviser.
“My mate would have a heart attack of she found out, come on Akil home,” Zazu replied taking to the air.
“Sudi I’ll give you a lift home,” Simba said.
“Thanks Uncle Simba,” Sudi replied climbing onto Simba's back.
“Sobeck, Buzubi thanks for taking care of these rascals.”
“It was a please Sire,” Buzubi replied as Simba, Kopa and Sudi headed home.
“Whatever either of you do, do not mention your trip to your mothers,” Simba said as they walked.
“Don't worry Dad I wasn't going to, Mum would hit the roof!” Kopa replied smirking.
Arriving home they found Nala, Timon and his mate Tabi waiting for them on the rocks. Seeing the exhausted looks on the youngsters faces Nala and Tabi took them off to bed while Simba relayed Sudi's adventure to Timon.
“That rascal! We thanks for bringing him home safely, night Simba.”
Entering the cave Simba found Kopa sleeping peacefully next to Nala, whose green eyes glittered in the darkness. Falling asleep he let the days concerns fall away from him.
Return to the Elephant’s Graveyard
One morning a couple of days after his crocodile adventure Kopa woke to find his parents, Grandma Sarabi, Uncle Pumba and Zazu in deep discussion regarding a pack of wild dogs who had taken up residence in the Elephant's Grave Yard. The dogs had requested hunting rights and permission to live in the kingdom. Given the recent past Simba was keen to speak to their leader so that past mistakes might be avoided.
“Dad can I come with you?” Kopa asked bounding over to his father.
“Kopa I don't think that would be sensible,” Nala replied.
“I'm brave. I'm not scared of going in and I'm not scared of spirits either,” Kopa replied, boldly gazing at his parents.
“Kopa we just want you to be safe.........” Nala began causing Kopa to groan.
“Nala it would be better if Kopa came with me,” Simba began causing Nala to shoot him a stern look. “I understand your concerns but if he come know then he is less likely to pull the stunt we did.”
“You're the best Dad,” Kopa roared pouncing on his father.
“Promise me that you will do exactly as I tell you, if you misbehave Zazu will bring you home,” Simba said sternly.
“I promise.”
Saying their goodbyes Zazu, Simba and Kopa set off into the savannah. Simba and Kopa ran side by side through the lush tall grass. Delighted shone from the faces of father and son, delighted by simply being with the other. Zazu skirted above their heads, flying low enough to entice Kopa into pouncing at him. Trying to pounce on the bird Kopa landed upside down in an ostrich nest. The ostrich chuckled at the sight, exchanging a grin with Zazu who was chucking in the air. Climbing to his paws Kopa shook the feathers from his fur and rejoined Simba who was stood watching.
“I remember the time your Mother and I rode ostriches,” Simba said smiling at the memory.
“When was that?”
“Your parents were on the way to the Elephant's Graveyard, managing to slip way from my eyes and land themselves in trouble,” Zazu said slyly.
“You and Mum snook out, what happened?” Kopa asked eagerly.
“We were a lot younger,” Simba began, a very embarrassed and guilty look in his face.
“Now now Sire the young prince deserves to hear the tale, if memory serves you were no older then him at the time.”
“Would you tell me what happened Zazu?”
“Certainty young prince,” Zazu replied a rather smug look in his face.
Settling onto Kopa's shoulder Zazu relayed the events of years gone by, telling each detail and embellishing a few parts much to the chagrin of Simba. As much fun as he had at the time, Siimba didn't relish the idea of his son being aware of his misdeeds, after all there was always a chance Kopa could try to do outdo his father is terms of mischief.
Reaching the border between the two lands Simba felt a wave of sadness and
nostalgia as he gazed upon the land. Taking a deep breath Simba crossed the border followed by Zazu and Kopa, who shot his Dad a look that showed a spark of fear. Catching the look Simba smiled down at his son with encouragement. Walking through the land the trio reached a gorge filled with bones, in the centre stood the wild dogs. At the groups head stood a large male next, to him a female and between stood a pup with a while strip over his right eye.
“Greetings Simba King of the Pride Lands, I am pleased you have come,” said the male.
“Greetings Paki (witness) leader of the wild dogs, I am glad we have the chance to discuss your request to live in my kingdom,” replied Simba proudly.
“My mate Amadi (rejoicing) and our first born son Dumisa (causes thunder). The handsome cub must be your son,” said Paki looking at Kopa.
“Hi I'm Kopa, its a pleasure to meet “ Kopa said stepping forward.
“Hi Kope they call me Dumisa,” Dumisa running over. “Dad can I show Kopa around?”
“Provided King Simba agrees.”
“Its fine by me,” Simba replied smiling at Pika and Dumisa.
“Thanks Dad,”
“See you later,” Dumisa yelled as he led Kopa into the bones.
“STAY OUT OF MISCHIEF,” Simba and Pika called simultaneously, causing both to laugh, breaking the tension.
Free from their fathers Kopa and Dumisa started talking to each other, talking about their parents and their favourite things. Both shared a love of adventure with Dumisa have a mischievous streak and took rules as something to be broken. Through and under the bones the pair explored, jumping over gaps and bravely venturing into a large skull.
While this was going on, Simba, Zazu, Pika and Amadi were busy discussing the business in hand. The wild dog were eager for peaceful lives, to live within the laws of the kingdom without fear. Their story was similar to that of most immigrants, a mixture of drought coupled with an overpopulation had forced the pack to seek a new home. Their journey had been far from trouble free, Pika had come to blows with a dark brown male lion over food then the pack had been forced to hide from a small pride a few days later. It was shear chance that had guided them to the Pride Lands at just the right time .
“I am happy to accept your pack as subjects on the proviso that you abide by the laws which govern this kingdom,” Simba said after listening to the tale.
“Provided the laws are just my pack will abide by them,” Pika replied, meeting Simba's eyes with a firm gaze.
“My laws are just,” Simba replied, explaining the laws of the kingdom with emphasis on fact that hunting for sport was prohibited.
“I deem those laws just King Simba, my pack can abide by them.”
“Tell me though, what of those who lived in this area before us, on what grounds were they expelled?” Amadi said stepping into the conversation.
“They were complicit in the murder of the rightful king which resulted in the rise of a tyrant and the near destruction of this land.”
“Interesting, I need an assurance that we will not be judged on their actions?”
“How dare you suggest such a thing!” Zazu stammered.
“I dare to ensure the safety of my pack,” Amadi snapped glaring at Zazu.
“Zazu relax, I can see why Amadi asked,” Simba whispered to Zazu. “Do we have an agreement?”
“We do King Simba,” Pika replied while Amadi nodded.
“If you are willing to watch its borders and allow my pride access, you may have this area as your own.”
“We live in your kingdom, the land is yours to do with as you choose,” Pika replied smiling happily.
“We will guard this land, thank you for granting us a place where our cubs can grow up in safety. Speaking of cubs ours have been alone for a while, I suggest we find them before they land themselves in trouble,” Amadi said smiling.
In a different part of the Graveyard Dumisa and Kopa were stood in a long tunnel of bones. Walking through the tunnel the two cubs looked up at the maze of bones in front of them. They were firmly in a pickle. Things had gone well enough until they had fallen through a large hole. Then voices drifted into their ears, the sound of their parents and Zazu. A moment later Amadi, Simba and Zazu appeared above them, looking down at the scene with amusement.
“Hi Dad, how was the meeting?” Kopa asked looking up.
“What have you been getting into?” Simba asked laughing.
“Just a slight er.......”
“Mishap?” Amadi asked with amusement.
“That's it Mum a mishap, we didn't intend to get into trouble,” Dumisa replied innocently.
“Well we had better get you out of trouble, I'm not sure where the tunnel leads,” Amadi replied looking down.
“I can fly down and guide them out,” Zazu said from Simba's shoulder.
“Smart bird Zazu, we can help them from up here,” Amadi replied as Zazu flew down.
Flying just in front of Dumisa and Kopa, Zazu listened keenly to the guidance from above. The tunnel was a true maze, weaving and winding its way through the graveyard, full of spiders and hidden crevices. From above Simba and Amadi were able to keep track of the cub's progress . Watching his son below Simba though back to the time he had explored the Graveyard, a wave of relief washing through him at the fact that the place would now be a safe place to play. Looking down he caught Kopa looking up, his son's eyes filled with courage and just a hint of mischief. At last the the cubs emerged from the tunnel, climbing out an old ribcage.
“Well the pair of you had quite an adventure,” Amadi said looking at the dust covered pair.
“It so fun Mum, could Kopa please come play again?”
“I am sure that can be arranged.”
“Dumisa you have to come play in the Pridelands, you can meet Akil and Sudi and we can play by the river.”
“You can make plans another time,” Simba said softly. “Now we have to head home. We have been out all day and your Mother is likely to be wondering what has gone off and if you have stayed out of trouble.”
“Do we have too?”
“Yes, come on rascal, home.”
“Bye Dumisa,” Kopa replied waving his tail at his new friend.
In the sunset Simba, Kopa and Zazu headed home, the light turning the sky above them a beautiful shade of pink and orange. As they walked Kopa's feet began to drag. Stopping to yawn Kopa looked down to see his small paw in a paw print of his father.
“Would you like a ride son?” Simba asked looking down at the tired cub.
“Yes please,” Koa yawned in reply, climbing onto his father's back.
In the sunset Simba and Zazu arrived home at Pride Rock. Seeing Nala waiting for them Simba smiled as she took in the sight of a half asleep Kopa. Gently Nala took the sleepy cub from his father back into the cave. With a nod to Zazu, Simba walked inside and yawned.
“Did everything work out well?” Nala whispered.
“The wild dogs agreed to everything we asked, they just want to live in peace. Kopa made friends with the pack leaders son. The pair of them when off exploring, I'm not sure what they were doing but they managed to land in a long tunnel,” Simba replied softly.
“I'm glad everything went well,” Nala replied sleepily.
Seeing past perceptions
A few days after his adventure in the Elephant's Graveyard Kopa was out playing with Akil, Sudi and Dumisa. They were given Dumisa a tour of all the best places to play as it was the wild dogs first time in the Pride Land's alone. Their parents had all driven the same things into their heads; stay away from the Outlands, be careful when walking through herds, avoid snakes,do not get into trouble, remember that falling can break bones and that crocodiles swim in the river.
Playing on the riverbank they chased each other through the water much to the announce of the animals who were drinking and the vultures who were not amused their lunch was being so rudely interrupted.
Skidding to a halt in front of some sunbathing crocodiles Kopa looked down across the bank, to his amazement he saw a dark tan cub with a tuft of black fur on his head and tail tip drinking from the river. Instantly a shiver of half anger and half curiosity ran down his spine as his friends joined him. Seeing the cub Dumisa, Akil and Sudi exchanged worried looks, though it might be Dumisa's first time exploring, that did mean he was unaware of past events. Seeing his friend's nervous Kopa gathered his courage, in the corner of his eye he could just see scaly form of Buzubi just visible in the water. Seeing Kopa walking over the cub instantly started to run into the river only to have escape blocked by Buzubi while Kopa and Dumisa corned him behind.
“My name is Kopa son of the king, who are Outsider and why do you trespass in my kingdom?” Kopa asked, trying to imitate his father's stance.
“I am Imoo son of Scar and Zira, so what are you going to do now prince? Run and tell Daddy you have caught the nasty Outsider?” asked the cub smirking.
“Not yet. I want to know what you are doing here.”
“Like I would tell you that.”
“You know the law, what will happen if you are caught here.”
“The law of a usurper,” Imoo spat flashing his claws.
“Look who is talking your father nearly destroyed this kingdom,” Kopa snarled, his eyes filled with anger.
“Yours took what did not belong to him, my father was the rightful king.”
“If you think that Imoo then your Dad hasn't told you the truth about what happened.”
“My father...... ”Imoo began.
“Enough,” Buzubi snapped in annoyance. “Arguing will not solve anything. Look Imoo you need to hear a few facts about the your dear old Dad and what happened during his reign. Listen then we will let you go.”
“Fine I'll listen,” Imoo snarled, seeing he was outnumbered.
Sitting down on the bank Imoo listened as Buzubi told him the truth about how Scar came to the throne, the events of his reign and how Simba reclaimed the throne. As the tale progressed Imoo felt anger course through him at how his father was portrayed, yet try as he might, the tale filled in certain gaps in his knowledge of the events. Also Imoo remembered the times when he had seen both his parents utterly filled with rage that supported their tyrannical actions. Imoo was not blind to his parents personalities, despite their care for him, he seen their cruelty first paw. A feeling of unease ran through his body. Imoo was still a cub, filled with a cub's belief that his parents could do no wrong.
“So even if what your saying is true why do you care what I think?” Imoo asked flicking his tail back and forth.
“I care because I don't we should have to hate each other, we are cousins, we could be friends.”
“Yeh right like that is possible,” Imoo replied sarcastically.
“Kopa is right,” Akil said flapping up to Imoo. “Our parents started this not us we could be friends.”
“I'll chew this over..........if I believe you and I want to be our friend?”
“Meet us here in four days,” Akil replied taking charge.
Walking off Imoo headed home, what he had been told swirling around in his head. Arriving home he found his twin brother Nuka fighting some female cubs, daughters of other Outsiders while Scar and Zira looked out. There was a look of disappointment in their eyes as Nuka was beaten by one of the girls. Seeing Imoo, Scar's eyes lit up, concern etched on his face when he saw the concern on the cub's face.
“Imoo did something happen in the Pridelands?” Scar asked placing a paw around his son.
“Dad can I ask you something?”
“Of course you can, why? If you have.....”
“I was out today and I heard some talk about your reign, things you never told me.....I just wanted to know if what I heard was true.”
“Walk with me, tell me everything,” Scar replied leading Imoo deeper into their home.
Walking next to his father Imoo told him everything that he had been told. Listening to the information Scar felt himself shift uncomfortably in his fur, he had been praying his son would not have discovered the truth so young. Scar cared deeply for his son, looking at him with regret he sighed.
“Imoo what you have to understand,” Scar began, explaining the events of his cub hood, why he chosen to kill Mufasa and the events of his reign.
Hearing his father's words Imoo listened in utter shock, he had never imagined his father could do such things. Anger and confusion entered his heart, it was all too much for such a young cub to understand.
“Imoo I am sorry you had to discover this so young, those Pridelander's saw things from one perspective.”
“Dad you said, you told me it was an accident with Mufasa and that Simba was angry at you for not saving him. You said he was a murderer.”
“Oh Imoo this may seem confusing now but soon you will fully understand when you are a little older,” Sacr replied nuzzling his son.
“Dad......if you say so,” Imoo replied softly.
Three days later Kopa and Akil waited on the banks of the river nervously waiting and praying for Imoo to show. Over the past three days they had both thought a lot about the meeting discussed deeply. Sudi and Dumisa had listened to the talk but they did not feel the legacy of the past as deeply as Kopa and Akil. Though young Kopa and Akil were well aware they were the heirs of Mufasa and Zazu and the importance of this legacy in dealing with Imoo. As the time passed and Imoo did not appear disappointment entered their hearts. Just when they were about the leave the slim form of Imoo crept out of the bushed.
“You came!” Akil cried flying to him.
“About time, we thought you weren't going to.”
“I nearly didn't.....My Dad admitted to everything you told me...... I never thought he could,” Imoo stammered uncertainly.
“Imoo........we are only cubs but...........we can be friends if we like, we don't have to tell our parents,” Kopa said hesitantly, smiling slightly.
“I've never really had a friend before, only the cubs of my parent's supporters and my brother Nuka,” Imoo replied smiling for the first time.
“Well you just got four,” Akil said as Dumisa arrived with Sudi on his back.
“About time you got here, looks like everyone is late today,” Kopa said rolling his eyes.
“Yeh well our parents are talking to yours..........something about hyenas poaching,” Dumisa replied.
“So we agree about being friends?” Imoo asked looking at the others.
A this everyone answered with an unanimous yes that surprised the dark cub, he had been expecting them to pull out. Seeing the looks of genuine respect and acceptance on their faces Imoo let himself trust them. Never in his short like had been seen as someone other than Scar's son, yet the cubs in front of him knew that and still wanted to be his friend. Imoo had never told anyone but he had always wanted a friend who would like him for who he was.
“Lets swear to be friends,” Kopa said putting his paws on a rock.
One by one Imoo, Dumisa and Sud put their paws down while Akil placed one wing down. Looking at each other their eyes lit up.
“FRIENDS!” they called, a shaft of sunlight cast a gold glow around the group.
Unbeknown to the golden group they were being watched. Carefully concealed in the branches of a tree Rafiki had been watching the scene unfold. Pride, amusement and a hint of surprise marked his face
“The past would say they should never be friends yet I witness them making vows of just that. Imoo is as his father was long ago.....very like little Zola in many ways, will he even be aware of her existence? We will have to watch this group Mufasa, they might just be the hope for a bright future.”
Friend from the past
Time had passed since the birth of Kopa and the inclusion of Imoo in his group of friends. Since that day the cubs had spent countless hours playing together, far from the sight of their parents. There had been a few close calls when they had nearly been seen by members of Simba's pride. It had taken some quick action to avoid Imoo being spotted.
One day Kopa was out with Nala on border patrol, walking side by side through the grass they soon reached a large rock known locally as Border Rock. The previous evening Pumba had reported a dark shape moving along the Outsiders side. In the fading sun he had been unsure of the creatures identity but strongly suspected it to be a lion. Kopa had never seen the Outland before, as Nala's keen eyes scanned the land for signs of the lion Kopa thought about how different the land was.
“Mum how come the Outlands is so different? Its just across the river but the game is less,” Kopa asked catching sight of some prey, though the herds seemed smaller.
“When Ahadi ruled there was a dry spell, when the rains did come a lightening storm hit the ground. It was dry so the fire spread easily, the river stopped the fire spreading any further. The land recovered but weaker, there is enough game to live on, but for a small pride. Why do you ask?” Nala asked thoughtfully.
“I was just thinking it must be hard for the Outsiders to get good meals.”
“They can manage. Remember they can hunt elsewhere the furthest border backs onto unclaimed land with game. They are not forced to stay there Kopa, they were banished there but they could leave,” Nala replied.
“I guess so.......”Kopa replied looking at the land sadly.
“I understand if you feel sorry for them. No matter how much your Father tries to distance them, they are part of your family, Scar is your Great Uncle and his son's are your cousins,” Nala replied nuzzling her son.
Before Kopa could reply the sound of a commotion drifted through the air. Looking into the Outlands they saw a lion running into the water pursued by a group of Outsider led by Aina. In his month the lion carried a young female cub. Both were terribly thin, their ribs clearly visible and a mixture of dirt and blood caked into their fur. Seeing them a strange look appeared in the lion's eyes as he entered the water. On the opposite bank Aina and other Outsiders snarled angrily, by entering the river the lion had managed to escape them. Without thinking Nala jumped down onto the river bank, know that as long as she stayed on her side of the river she was safe.
Walking out of the river the lion collapsed, his breath coming out in long laboured gasps while the cub trembled next to him. Looking down at the lion Nala tilted her head to one side, in the depth of her mind she was sure she knew the lion. Feeling her presence the lion opened his eyes, green met red, in that moment the years seemed to go backwards, back to a time long since passed.
“Ni is it really you?” Nala asked in a half whisper.
“How do you know my name?” the lion croaked in a broken voice.
“Ni don't you realize who I am? The cub you saved all those years ago?”
“No it can’t be, Nala?” Ni asked in disbelief.
“Yes Ni it’s me what happened to you and who is this?”
“I need help Nala, please my daughter......we haven't eaten,” Ni coughed gasping for breath.
“Ni relax nothing will happen to you,” Nala whispered. Looking up she saw Kopa looking down worriedly.
“Kopa run home. When you see a herd of elephants you trust tell them to come here, tell them we have an injured friend who needs a lift home. Then go to Rafiki, tell him that Ni is here and that he is hurt. Rafiki will understand, you won't have to explain anything else. Have Rafiki go to Pride Rock, stay with him, help him if needed. Kopa its very important you tell Rafiki, Ni is desperately in need of his medicine. Go now, run fast, as fast as you can for help,” Nala said, a slight edge of panic in her voice.
“Mum will they be all right?” Kopa replied, his voice shaking slightly.
“I.....I hope so Kopa, go now.”
Taking to his paws Kopa ran through the savannah, his heart beating wildly with anxiety. Running through the herds Kopa come to herd of elephants that he and Nala had spoken to less than an hour previously. Running up to them he let out a loud roar to attract attention. Seeing him the proud matriarch looked down, concern in her eyes once she saw the look in Kopa's eyes. Before she could speak, Kopa repeated what Nala had told him along with the location.
“I will personally make sure your Mother and the lions are safe,” replied the matriarch.
“Thank you,” Kopa replied as he ran off.
Relief washed through him as he ran, the first part was complete and his mother would be safe from attack. Under a tree he stopped to drink from a large pool the cool water bringing welcome relief from the heat. The sound of hooves reached his ears, the granddaughter of the elephant matriarch he had just spoken to was walking towards him.
“My Grandma told me to take you to Rafiki.”
“Thank you,” Kopa replied as the female gently lifted him onto her back.
Together the pair travelled across the savannah, travelling much quicker than Kopa could have managed along. Soon they arrived at the large tree in which Rafiki made his home. Standing on the elephant's trunk Kopa was able to climb up into the branches. Seeing the cub Rafiki looked at him in concern, placing down his paints.
“Rafiki I need help. My Mum said to tell you that Ni is back and he is injured,” Kopa said before the wise baboon could speak.
“NI!”
“She said you would understand, he was attacked by Outsiders. Elephants are going to take him to Pride Rock.”
“I understand Kopa. Let me gather my medicines than we can go together to Pride Rock.”
A short time later Rafiki and Kopa arrived at Pride Rock on the back of the elephant to find that Nala and Ni had already arrived. Setting down his medicines Rafiki set to work on Ni and the female cub, binding their wounds and spreading a green paste on them that caused the cub to call out in agony.
“They are both badly malnourished, make sure they eat plenty for them to recover. In time the physical wounds will heal but keep an eye on the cub, I fear she has seen much more than one her age should,” Rafiki said at last.
“We will, how old is she?” Nala asked softly.
“A month older then Kopa, she appears younger from starvation.”
As Rafiki left the cave Sarabi, Sarafina, Tama and Kula appeared all dragging large pieces of meat. Seeing them relief entered Ni's eyes, wolfing down the food while ensuring the cub ate her fill. As he ate Ni told the pride his story. After leaving the Pride Lands he had met other rouges, establishing a pride in a kingdom not ruled by lions. He fell in love with a lioness called Katlego, over two years previously their daughter Majani was born with. Drought hit the kingdom as it did in many parts of Africa, at the same time Katlego had discovered she was pregnant. Around the same time Marjani left with a small pride led by a male named Wanderer. Aketch was born in a time of turmoil. Three months after Aketch's birth the land was still suffering, despite some rain it was to little to late, tragically Katlego died. That was the motivation for Ni to leave his some for the sake of his daughter. At the edge of the jungle a flock of flamingos had alerted him to Scar's death and Simba's accession to the throne. The news had given Ni a path and a place to aim for.
“I am sorry for what you have bee through Ni, you are both welcome to live here, we will help you,.” Simba said sombrely, sadness in his eyes.
“You are not alone Ni, we can care for both of you,” Nala said, placing a paw over Ni's.
“Thank you, as long as Aketch is safe,” Ni whispered, clearly exhausted.
“Get some rest my friend,” Simba said looking down.
“I will Simba,” Ni replied, looking down at a now sleeping Aketch.
Looking at Ni and Aketch, Simba and Nala saw that they had suffered, as the pride gathered outside that night all vowed to help their friend recover. Having never met Ni before, Timon, Pumba and Simba listened to Nala as she explained the circumstances of his arrival during Scar's reign.
“Ni sounds like a good lions who has been through a rough time,” Pumba said. “I'll do what I can to help him.”
“I agree Pumba, Ni has been through a terrible time, he will need our help over the coming days,” Simba replied heavily.
The days passed, slowly Ni and Aketch began to put on weight, the emaciated haunted look slowly receding. Ni was often in the company of Nala, Simba and Kula and Sarafina, sharing the pain of recent months. After months of isolation and events she could barely understand Aketch was withdrawn and silent, falling into terror if Ni left for long periods and clinging to waking screaming in the night. To the relief of Ni, Aketch formed an attachment to Kula who was more than happy to care for cub. The presence of Pumba seemed to help as well, his caring and thoughtful demeanour allowed Aketch to talk to him without fear being judged.

A month after her arrival Aketch sat a the cave entrance watching the rain, waiting for her father to come home. Seeing her sitting there alone Kopa walked up to her, his fur wet from playing underneath the base of Pride Rock. Kopa was slightly nervous about speaking to her, as he had been told be be gentle with her.
“Hi Aketch what are you doing?”
“Oh hi Kopa, just watching the rain, its so nice,” Aketch replied shyly.
“If you like it so much come play in it with me.”
“Play in the rain? Water is for drinking.”
“Rain is fun, come on Aketch,” Kopa replied lightly tapping her with a paw.
Seeing the mischievous look on Kopa's face Aketch replied one of her own, in a flash she took to her paws. The warm rain hit the cub's fur as they ran, racing down through the rocks they chased one another. Feeling the freedom and joy Aketch laughed, utterly caught up in the feelings of being a cub. Running next to her Kopa grinned at the sight of Aketch, his plan had worked to perfection. Jumping down from the rocks, Kopa led her into the grass, running through the mud they were soon covered from paws to tail.
“KOPA, AKETCH!”
Stopping their game the cubs turned around to see Simba and Ni looking at them with a mixture of amusement and disbelief, their eyes fixed firmly on the mud. They had not been expecting to find their cubs playing together.
“Hi Daddy,” Aketch said bounding over.
“Whose bright idea was this?” Ni asked raising an eyebrow.
“I wanted to show Aketch around,” Kopa replied brazenly.
“In the rain?” Simba asked looking at the pair.
“Its only water.”
“Your mother is going to have a fit when she sees you,” Simba said shaking his head.
Kopa and Aketch ran ahead through the rain, skidding to a halt on the wet rock they landed in a heap on top of a napping Tama.
“Ah wet cub!” Tama groaned jumping to her paws.
“Oops sorry Tama,” Kopa laughed while Aketch giggled.
“Oh great you are covered in mud, now I will have to go swimming tomorrow,” Tama groaned flicking her tail angrily.
Seeing the cubs arrive back the other lioness chuckled while Nala and Kula rolled their eyes at the sight of the dirt. As Simba and Ni walked in the cubs scampered over to the entrance, settling down to watch the rain. Smiling Simba and Ni shook their heads at the less than happy looks on Nala and Kula's faces.
“Trust Kopa to lead Aketch into mischief the first time they play together,” Kula muttered rolling her eyes.
“The mud will wash off at least Aketch has been able to have some fun,” Ni replied settling down to wait out the storm.
The storm had blown itself out by the following day much to the relief of Kopa as he had big plans for the day. Down on the riverbanks Kopa introduced Aketch to Dumisa, Sudi, Akil and Imoo, who had been waiting to meet Aketch for some time. Having no connection to the Pridelands, Aketch swore to keep the friendship with Imoo a secret without hesitation. Standing with her friends Aketch felt her heart lift with joy in that moment she realized she was safe, with a place to call home. Above them in a tree Rafiki watched them with interest.
“They could change the world, these child of savannah,” Rafiki whispered.
Looking up at the sky Rafiki smiled to Mufasa and Katlego who were just visible in the clouds. Under the African sun the children played together, carefree and innocent their played with joy, utterly oblivious to the concerns of the world.
Part 2
Ahadi's legacy
Time had passed in the Pridelands. The land had fully recovered and the children of the savannah were nearing their second birthdays, in human terms they were teenagers. Kopa and Imoo were growing manes which where ragged and uneven giving them a slightly roguish look. The friendship between Akil, Sudi, Kopa, Dumisa, Imoo and Aketch had remained and grown even stronger. As time had passed the lions had been come increasingly involved in pride life. Inevitably this had led them into conflict with one another when Imoo was forced to act with the Outsiders against the Pridelanders. At first this had threatened the friendship before an agreement had been reached whereby neither side would be blamed for any conflict. The inclusion of Rafiki as the groups mentor had helped ease the situation, with his help the friends were beginning to see the possible future they could build together.
The situation between the prides had taken a dramatic change with the news that both Nala, Kula and Zira were expecting cubs. To the shock of all, the latter's not fathered by Scar. On the night the news had been aired Imoo had sought out his friends support, the relationship between his parents had turned complex to say the least, Scar had agreed to accept the cubs as part of his pride. The friends feared that soon Scar's increasingly twisted behaviour would led to an act that would ignite the fire of war.
Kula's case has brought much joy as Ni was the cub's father. Over time the pair had grown closer until they had become official mates to the delight of all. In To Aketch's Kula was her mother. Aketch could not remember her birth mother, having been very young when she had died. Kula and Aketch had developed a strong bond which had been strengthened when Kula had formally adopted Aketch following her marriage to Ni.
The news of Nala's second pregnancy had brought delight to the pride, Kopa utterly stunned when he found out. Thought he was delighted he had still needed a day or two to get his head around the news. Simba went a step further, to his utter embarrassment he fainted on hearing the news. His friends had given him a thorough teasing and promised to repeat the story to the unborn cub. The pride now waited with baited breath for the births of Kula and Nala's cubs.

Out in the Elephants Graveyard Dumisa, Imoo and Sudi ran through the bones hotly pursued by Kopa, Aketch and Akil. The game was called Hunters verse Prey with the prey trying to outwit the hunters, the former group were the prey while the latter group were the hunters. The prevent the hunters having an unfair advantage Akil was not allow to fly more than half a meter above the lions heads.
“WE’RE GAINING ON THEM,” Aketch yelled leaping over pile of bones.
“RUN FOR IT,” Dumisa yelled in response, looking over his shoulder.
Turing a corner sharply Dumisa skidded, losing his footing and allowing Aketch to perfect opportunity to pounce on him.
“Got you,” she snarled placing a paw on his throat.
“Strike one to you,” Dumisa replied getting up as Kopa gained on Imoo.
Looking behind him Imoo grinned increasing his speed as Akil pounced on Sudi who was riding on his back. In an instant the meerkat was lifted into the air.
“PUT ME DOWN YOU OVERGROWN BALL OF FEATHERS!” Sudi yelled as he dangled above the ground.
“Akil drop him” Kopa called opening his mouth wide.
“NO!”Sudi yelled in mock horror.
“Down you go”, Akil said swooping low and dropping Sudi on Dumisa’s back.
“That hurt you ball of zebra dung!” Sudi called, shaking a fist at the laughing bird.
Racing through the fire pits the friends ran up onto the rocks, jumping over small gaps. Suddenly the rocks under Dumisa and Sudi collapsed without warning, sending the friends tumbling into the darkness in a pile of dust. Skidding to a halt at the edge of the hole Kopa, Imoo, Aketch and Akil gazed down at their friends.
“ARE YOU OK?” Aketch called, her voice full of concern.
Silence greeted her, the sound of soft voices, coughing and a yelp drifted up from the hole while those waiting exchanged worried looks.
“Guys we're alive,” Dumisa called limping into a shaft of light. “Sudi's got concussion, a broken right paw and several cuts.”
“What about you?” Aketch asked catching sight of a head gash dripping blood.
“Headache, cuts and a sprained paw. I can walk if I take it slowly.”
“Dumisa listen to me you are in one of the underground caverns that run underneath the Graveyard. There should be several ways in and out, we'll try to find a way down to you,” Imoo called looking down. “Akil you are going to have to fly down to help guide them, I don't trust Dumisa alone.”
“Sure thing Imoo, you three get going,” Akil replied flying down into the hole as Imoo turned to face Kopa and Aketch who had been listening with interest.
“Take the lead Imoo, you seem to know how to solve this,” Kopa said before the tan lion could speak.
“My Dad told me a lot about this place,”Imoo replied softly.
Climbing further up the rocks the trio jumped over gaps, skirting around bones as they searched for a way into the cavern below. Looking into one opening Aketch jumped back in fright as a large scorpion came at her flashing it's pincers angrily.
“This place is creepy, can see why your farther chose it as a place to plot,” Aketch muttered turning to Imoo.
“It was forbidden for lions to come here once,” Kopa replied.
“I heard a tale from my Dad once, is is it true your parents once came here as cubs and nearly got themselves killed by the hyenas?” Imoo asked slyly turning to Kopa.
“Oh you heard that story,” Kopa replied mischievously. “All true. Granddad had to rescue them both though Dad did manage to put three scars on a female’s cheek.”
“They were chased by by Shenzi, Banzi and Ed, my Dad told me it would have been a perfect plan,” Imoo replied uncomfortably.
“I found a way in!” Aketch called, breaking the tension between the cousins.
With Imoo in the lead the trio made their way into the caverns. Their eyes glowing brightly in the darkness. Walking through the darkness the trio stayed close together relying on their sense of smell and hearing to guide them where their eyesight could not. Leaving the tunnel the trio emerged into at a vast open cave where fire pits erupted sending green flames and smoke which illuminated the seemingly dark rocks. On the other side of the cave was an exit but to get to it the lions would either have to jump the large gap that stood between themselves and the exit.
“There has to be another route, if we try to jump we will be killed” Aketch stammered looking at the gap in fear.
“Father told me of this place, he called it Lion's Leap. Before the hyenas moved in lions used to come here to test their courage by jumping the gap. If they made it they were considered brave, Ahadi himself jumped this gap,” Imoo said
“Looks like we have no choice ,” Kopa replied with regret turning to his friends. “I'll go first.”
“NO! Let me,” Imoo snapped. “I have less to lose than you, if I get hurt it will not matter as much.”
“Be careful,” Aketch replied softly giving Imoo a lick on the cheek.
The colour rushed to Imoo's cheek as he felt the lick, embarrassed by the attention of the beautiful young lioness. Talking several steps back from the edge Imoo gathered his courage. Breaking into a run he used all his strength to spring from the rock. The seconds slowed to a crawl as he flew through the air. With a mighty thud he landed safely on the other side. Climbing to his paws Imoo felt the breath returning to his body as the adrenaline rushed through his blood.
“I did it....” Imoo gasped in wonder. “Kopa Aketch come on!”
Running at the edge without a moments hesitation Kopa sprang across the gap, a mighty roar resonating from his chest as he did. Landing on the other side Kopa felt a sharp pain on his shoulder. Climbing to his paws he let out a large whoop of joy barely aware of the cuts to his shoulder.
“YES I did it! Aketch come on you can do it,” Kopa called looking to his friend.
“Relax Aketch, if you believe you can do then you will,” Imoo called.
Fear coursing through her body Aketch took a running jump off the edge. For a brief moment she appeared to reach the opposite side. To the horror of Imoo and Kopa she landed on the edge. Her paws clung desperately to the rock face, panic running through her body.
“AKETCH!” Kopa and Imoo yelled together dashing forward and grabbing her paws.
With Kopa holding onto her paws Imoo grabbed hold of the scruff of her neck they began to pull her up the rock face. Catching the other's eye Kopa and Imoo exchanged a silent understanding. Her eyes wide with panic Aketch used her front paws to scramble up. With one last effort they made it, Aketch's pack paws touched the solid rock face. Gasping for breath the trio lay on their backs, the smoke around them turning their fur black.
“Thank you, you saved my life, both of you” Aketch gasped facing her friends.
“No problem,” Kopa replied blushing slightly.
“You are our friend Aketch,” Imoo said averting his gaze. “Come on we need to find the others.”
Climbing to the their paws the trio left cavern descending once into the darkness of the passageways. Through twisting passages they lost all sense of time and their direction. Anxiety began to build for their friends safety combined with the unspoken fear for their own safety. Entering another cavern their eyes fell on a large underground spring. Laying next to the spring were Akil, Dumisa and Sudi, the wild dog half submerged in the water with his eyes closed. Seeing the lions approaching Akil let out a visible sight of relief, it was clear Dumisa and Sudi were in bad shape.
“At last I was beginning to get worried,” said Akil landing on Kopa’s shoulder.
“It took us a while to find you guys, how are Sudi and Dumisa?” Kopa asked worriedly.
“Able to walk with help but they need medicine.”
“Akil you need to fly for help, find your Dad or mine or go straight to Rafiki,” Kopa taking a course of action.
“Akil remember you can't mention my name,” Imoo chipped in as the bird took flight.
Walking into the water the lions drank their fill, clearing their lungs and bodies of the smoke and dirt. With great care Sudi was placed on Imoo's back, Kopa and Aketch positioning themselves either side of Dumisa in case he fell. With Imoo leading they began to walk, trusting their friend's knowledge of the passageways. Gradually the air began to smell cleaner, shafts of light shone through chinks in the rocks. Half closing their eyes they emerged at last from the cave, breathing a sigh of relief they took in the clean air. Carefully they clambered over rocks, slipping down over bones that jutted out from all angles. Arriving at last at the centre of Graveyard they saw Rafiki waiting outside a cave with Akil perched on his shoulder.
“I have been hearing about your exploits, bring both of them into the cave,” Rafiki said, pointing to a bed of fur and foliage.
With experienced eyes Rafiki looked over the injured Dumisa and Sudi, while opening his medicine shells. Extracting leaves and strong sticks placed splints around the bound the sprains and breaks, using leaves, strong sticks and vines. Gently he massaged green, yellow and red paste into the wounds, Dumisa and Sudi groaning in discomfort.
“Both of you need plenty rest , your wounds will heal, I will return daily for the next few days to reapply the medicine. I strongly advise neither of you try to leave this cave and that you are not left alone. The head wounds you have could develop into a more serious condition,” Rafiki said standing over the pair.
“One of us can stay with them,” Aketch said instantly.
“Tell your parents what as happened so they can assist, you suffered an accident so it is understandable you will need help,” Rafiki said smiling.
“We will, Dumisa's parents already know as I told them before I reached you,” Akil said, turning to Rafiki.
“My Dad going to get a laugh at my expense and my Mum is going a hit the proverbial when she finds out,” Sudi groaned from his bed.
“Let me handle your Mum,” Kopa replied rolling his eyes. “Speaking off we had better get home or we'll all be in trouble.”
Leaving the cave Imoo headed off for the border with the Outlands, sicking to the shadows to avoid detection. Returning home the young adults found their parents waiting with a mountain of questions.
“Well kids you can relax, we're not going to skin you today,” Timon said slyly. “We hate to admit it but accidents happen, though you might want to be more careful in that place.”
Prelude to reckoning
A few weeks had passed since the accident in the Elephants Graveyard, Dumisa and Sudi had both successfully recovered from their injuries with no ill effects. The prides now waited with baited breaths, Zira, Kula and Nala were due to give birth any day. Tensions were running high, Ni and Simba's tempers were noticeably short. Simba had even snapped at Pumba and Timon two days previously, something he had never done before. Understanding the situation his friends had not taken it to heart, telling him not to worry when he apologised.
Kopa and Simba walked through the savannah at twilight as Simba gave his son a lesson in how to rule the kingdom. Stopping on top of a hill they saw the lionesses hunting zebra in the distance. The kingdom was spread out before them like a map, turning away headed towards the Outlands. As they walked Simba told his son about the times he had played in the area as a cub, Kopa laughing at some of the exploits of his parents and grandparents.
Nearing the border Simba stooped in his tracks, lifting one paw up to sniff the air a dark looked crossed his face. The scents of Scar, Nuka and Imoo had been carried to him on the wind. Taking to their paws they pair bounded across the savannah meeting the Outsiders as they took down a young buffalo. Eyes narrowing the two sides launched into a fight, Imoo and Kopa being forced to fight one another though both tried to limit the wounds they give to the other. A roar of pain stopped the fighting, Simba, Scar and Imoo stopped their fighting, Kopa had Nuka pinned to the ground in a pool of mud.
“Nuka why do you insist on hurting innocents? I know about the incident with the wild dog pup,” Kopa snarled angrily.
“She was in my way during a hunt, besides it is my kingdom,” Nuka replied boldly.
“Nuka you need to think about why you do things, cousins shouldn't fight,” Kopa replied letting him up.
“Well well interesting you did not kill my son Kopa,” Scar said softly.
“No Scar I would not kill family, unlike your son I have a better understanding of this situation,” Kopa replied facing Scar.
“Simba has raised you well. Imoo Nuka we are clearly not welcome here let is depart before King Simba decides to take further action,” Scar said to his sons.
With one last condescending look Scar and sons slunk away into the Outlands leaving Simba snarling with anger. Watching Imoo follow his father and brother, both Kopa and Simba saw the regret shining in his eyes. The regret stopped Simba is his tracks, surprised that a son of Scar would ever show a hint of remorse.
“Kopa are my eyes deceiving me or did Imoo have regret in his eyes?”
“I saw it took. I know he is Scar's son..........”
“When I have seen Imoo in the past........Kula, Ni and Sarabi have also mentioned that he seemed somewhat different to the other Outsiders,” Simba replied as they walked.
Looking at his father Kopa silently assessed his mood, debating if that was the opportunity to reveal Imoo's true colours. Yet the look of anger on his father's face made him think it was not. Though it might be the perfect time to lay the ground work for the revelation.
“Dad have you ever thought that not all Outsiders want to follow their parents paw prints? I mean think about it, those that are my age were born after Scar's reign, they might not understand or even care about the past. They have seen how we live, how fair you and Mum rule, what if some are questioning what they have been told?”
“That could be possible..........you have been listening to Rafiki on the subject. I am glad,” Simba sighed smiling at his son. “I find it difficult to see past what Scar and the Outsider's did..........perhaps some Outsiders may think differently.”
“Would you allow them to join the pride?”
“Perhaps, if they could prove to me without a doubt that they were not trying to deceive me.”
Hearing the words Kopa felt a slight glimmer of hope, the conversation had gone a lot better than he was expecting, his father had not outright rejected the suggestion. If he could only find a way for Imoo to convince Simba beyond any doubt that Imoo was not Scar. There had to be a way, trying to arrange a meeting between his parents and Imoo would be difficult to arrange but if the former party were unaware of the plan.
“As king there may come a time when you have to act at night. It is important that you known the way in darkness,” Simba said looking at sky.
The words brought Kopa down to earth with a bump, banishing all future plans from his mind. He was well aware he had been brought out here for a reason, looked like he was going to find out.
“We are now at far enough away from home for getting back to be a challenge for you. You will observe how our subjects behave at night. You can do whatever you like provided you are home a little after dawn.”
“Isn’t it a bit risky, me being out alone at night? It would be a pretty good time for the Outsiders to attack me.”
“Scouts will be around watching you in case anything serious happens.”
“How the heck did you mange to get Mum to agree to this?” Kopa asked with a smirk.
“It took some doing, she was not happy when it was first suggested, I thought she was going to skin me alive!”
“It must have taken some sweet talking on your part then.”
“That’s putting it milady,” Simba grinned in reply as they reached a small mountain. “I will leave you here, good luck and stay safe.”
Standing on the mountain Kopa watched as the sun finally set on the horizon. A beautiful crescent moon hung in a star filled sky. Silence hung over the land pierced only by the beautiful singing of birds. A sense of peace descend over the young prince, the cool air on his fur a welcome relief from the day's sun. Above his head a flock of bats passed over paying the young prince little mind as they hunted. Silent as a ghost an owl flew above his head. Seeing Kopa the owl flew low over his head then further along enticing Kopa to chase it. Kopa gave in and set off after it, jumping in an attempt to get it. With a gentle wind blowing his fur Kopa chased the owl as it flew low, before finally landing on a rock.
“That was fun,” Kopa laughed facing the owl.
“Very fun,” the young owl replied flapping his wings.
Leaving the owl, Kopa marvelled at how different his home was come nightfall, the refreshing beauty of the stars and cool night air. Stopping at a small pond Kopa saw his own reflection staring back at him. Looking up at the star Kopa sent a silent prayer to The Great Kings. His thoughts drifted to his family, friends, his path in life and how the divide between the prides could be healed.
“Only when Scar and Zira die can we ever become one pride. There’s too much hatred on both sides for my father to accept them. When Imoo becomes leader he can end the fighting, my father might just be willing to listen to him. We can forge a truce and unite both prides again, bring the exiles home. Rafiki, Dumisa, Akil, Sudi, Aketch and Sobeck could vouch for Imoo. If father refuses to see past Imoo's birth.......Imoo and I have patience by the paw full, if it takes the deaths of Scar and my father then so be it. Unless Imoo chooses to leave the Outlands...........”
A face appeared in the water, a hansom lion with a yellow body and a jet black mane. In fright Kopa sprang to the paws, facing the lion he saw the lion was bathed in moonlight. Memories of stories surfaced, a spark of half believed recognition burst into his mind.
“Ahadi!”Kopa gasped in disbelief.
“At last we meet Kopa,” Ahadi replied in a soft, deep voice.
“This is impossible.....you're......”
“Not so impossible. Those that have gone before can return to this world to provide assistance to those than require or deserve it most,” Ahadi replied regally.
“How did I fit that category?” Kopa asked with confusion.
“Your desire to end the war between the prides combined with the uncertainty on how it may be achieved. I come now to bring comfort and wisdom to you” Ahadi replied sitting down next to Kopa.
“I need your help. No matter much Imoo and I try to find a way end the war....... we never seem to get any closer, ” Kopa said dejectedly.
“I have seen what both of you have tried, the two cousins who try to end the conflict caused by two brothers. No not lose heart Kopa, your father is no as unwilling as you believe. In his heart he wishes there was a way to end the war yet he refuses to be deceived again.”
“Imoo looks as much as Scar as I do my Father and Mufasa. My Father will have a hard time seeing past his looks.”
“That cannot be changed, his personality is what you have to show your family, Sarabi, Sarafina and other will see myself and Uru in him,” Ahadi replied facing the stars.
“How? There is a way but they could attack the moment they see him.”
“Kopa my time is running out for I must leave before the first hint of dawn. I have to give you a grave warning. At dawn it will begin, the events that will lead to the final fight with Scar. Beginnings will also mark the end for the old king. Much courage will be needed to avoid disaster. If you are willing to take a great risk you could save the lives of those you love.”
“Innocents........”Kopa whispered as Ahadi began to fade.
“Kopa trust in yourself and your friends. The children of the savannah have the power to change the tide of the fighting.”
Standing in the first light of dawn Kopa pondered the words of his great grandfather. The concern for the innocents troubled him yet the hope for the future lightened his heart. A start of a new dawn he walked home. Far away in the Outlands a new dawn had arrived with the birth of twin cubs to Zira. At Pride Rock, Kula had given birth to single male cub with Ni and Aketch at her side. Just as Ahadi had promised, the dawn had brought beginning of the end for Scar.
Birth of the Future
A week had passed since the birth of Zira's cubs, at Pride Rock Simba and Kopa looked down at the tiny cub who rested between Nala's paws. A pretty little girl who was just hours old. Across the cave, Aketch and Ni curled up around Kula and their son whom Ni had named Nassor.
“She’s beautiful Nala, just like her mother,” Simba whispered lovingly.
“She will have you wrapped around her little claw,” Nala laughed softly. “Now she needs a name.”
“I'd thought about Uru, Zuri or Dawn,” Sima replied nuzzling Nala.
“They sound nice.”
“Can I make a suggestion?” Kopa asked speaking up.
“Of course,” Nala replied smiling at her son.
“Well I’ve always liked the name Kiara.”
“Its beautiful,” Nala replied turning to Simba.
“Kiara.........perfect, just the name we have been looking for. Kiara”
“You have a good judge for names, Kiara is lucky to have you for a brother,” Nala replied softly.
At this comment Kopa blushed a deep shade of crimson, shifting from one paw to another, embarrassed by his mother's comment. At that moment Rafiki and Zazu walked into the cave.
“Sire your subjects have arrived, everything is ready for the ceremony,” Zazu said bowing deeply.
Side by side the royal family walked outside, Nala gently Kiara into Rafiki's safe paws. Standing together Simba, Nala and Kopa stood on the rock as Kiara was presented to their subjects. Pride and happiness coursed through Simba, his father's image just visible. The circle of life had begun once more, a second cub to secure the future of the royal line. A great roar ripped through Simba, a roar filled with power and pride. Kopa took up the roar, his filled with happiness and pride, the hope of the future. A royal family united.
That afternoon after the ceremony had ended the royal family gathered around a pool behind their home. Relaxing in the shade Simba groaned at the sight of Pumba and Zazu appearing, as both were trusted advisers it usual meant there was trouble to deal with.
“Simba sorry to disturb you, one of the young foxes has got itself in a spot of trouble with two of the young wild dogs,” Pumba said rolling his eyes. “Neither will side will listen to their parents...”
“Just what I needed, teenagers causing problems,” Simba groaned. “Nala I'm sorry about all this.”
“Simba you do not have to apologise, I understand,” Nala replied licking his cheek.
Climbing to his paws Simba left his family with his heart yet safe in the knowledge that Kopa would protect Nala if any trouble happen. Watching Simba disappear into the distance Nala gaze suddenly fell on a pair of green eye that glinted in the foliage. Seconds later Imoo stepped out from his hiding place. Instantly Nala tensed, fear running through veins.
“Imoo what are you doing here,” Kopa asked in awe.
“Kopa what is going on?” Nala stammered in disbelief.
“Imoo is my friend, has been for years, he won't harm us, I swear,” Kopa replied.
“Kopa is right, I would never lay a paw on Kiara, on any of you. Kopa, Queen Nala, you must be on your guard. I have come here to warn you of a plot my parents have involving the cubs,” Imoo whispered, sorrowing filling his eyes. “Think what you like about me, believe me if you want.”
“Mum we have been friends since I was a cub, please see past his looks, give him a chance,” Kopa implored.
Hearing the words Nala looked closely between both young lions. Sincerity mixed with shame shone through the eyes of Imoo. In those of her son, determination and confidence. Her mind slipped back to events of years past when she too saw past the surface of a cub of Scar too the lioness underneath. Though time had passed the memory of was fresh, the similarities between both events clear. Unknowingly Kopa had followed his mother's paw prints. Just as Nala had been Scar and Zira's daughter Zola for who she was, so Kopa had seen their son.
“We are more alike than I realized Kopa,” Nala said after a length pause. “Imoo thank you for this information. I am willing to give you this opportunity to prove who you are. Tell me, how are relations between your parents?”
“Not great, not as good as when I was first born but better than they have been recently. They went through a terrible patch, arguing, fighting. Mum kept on blaming Scar for something. A lioness called Zola is always mentioned, something about when Simba returned and that Zola vanished. Mum would get upset.”
“I had a feeling things might have gone down hill,” Nala sighed.
“Mum do you know who this Zola is?”
“Scar's reign holds many untold stories of pain and suffering combined with hope. In the final days of his reign the borders were barely guarded, many things escaped his eye. Zola's story belongs to that time of turmoil. I dare not tell you her story at this time, if it were to be heard than the fragile stability between the prides could be threatened. In time, if by some miracle the wounds are healed then I will reveal the truth to you. She is safe and hopefully happy, you would both like her ” Nala replied smiling softly.
A plot's revelation
Three weeks had passed since the birth of Kiara and Nassor, in the shadow of a baobab tree Sarabi lay next to the young cubs. Sarabi had offered to mind them so Kula and Nala could have a break. Without warning Scar and seven of his pride attacked, the former king attacking Sarabi personally. Rage against the past fuelled his attack. In that moment two former friends faced one another both consumed by the events of past. A mighty blow send Sarabi to the ground, a cry of agony escaping from her throat. Opening her eyes she gazed up at the triumphant face of Scar, a look of hatred in his eyes. Intense pain coursing through her blood Sarabi slipped into unconsciousness. Such was the precision of the attack that the pride barely had time to react before the Outsiders were gone, taking the cubs with them.
Standing in the cave a couple of hours later Simba listened to the events. Shock, utter rage and sadness mingled inside him. Though Rafiki had treated Sarabi's injuries she lay in a critical condition, he had gone so far as to warn that she might not recover. Ni, Kula and Aketch gathered together, all distraught at the loss. Close by Nala was being comforted by her mother, despair in her heart. Both lioness blamed themselves for what had happened, seeing that their need for a break had provided the opportunity. Standing next to his father Kopa listened in utter disbelief. Akil and Sudi stood by Kopa, their presence comforting their friend. Timon, Tabia, Zazu, his mate Mert and Pumba gathered near to Simba. A shadow fell across the cave entrance, Aina and Nuka appearing, looks of satisfaction on their faces.
“What are you doing here?” Simba roared with rage.
“We’ve got a request from my parents. If you give back the land then we will not harm our captives” Nuka replied.
“If you refuse............… your cubs will suffer,” Aine said with a smirk.
“You disguised me, Kiara and Nassor are innocent,” Nala cried. “To think I once trusted you Aina, you have your own cub.”
“You are not one to talk Nala about harming cubs, Masika vanished the night you returned with her best friend. Strange........ I though Kopa and Aketch would be happy we have taken their siblings.”
“Lay a paw on my sister's head and you will suffer severely,” Kopa snarled. “You do not want to push me.”
“I second that Aine. Hurt Nassor and I will make you wish you had never been born” Aketch said glaring murderously at Aine who stepped back.
“You have two days then those two will get it,” Nuka said stepping forward.
“Get out of here now,” Simba said lunging at Nuka.
In a flash the pair fled, laughing with mad glee as they went. In the cave the lions tried to process what they had been told. Arguments erupted over the best course of action, some arguing for an immediate attack while others urged caution. In the midst of the debates Imoo appeared, shame, sorrow and utter agony written on his face. Simba moved to attack yet was stopped by Kopa who jumped in between his father and friend. Quickly he explained to the pride that Imoo had indeed given a warning of Scar's plot. The pride had been aware of a warning but had been told that a bird had overheard a discussion between Scar and Zira, the truth stopped them in their tracks.
“I swear to all of you I was unaware of my Father's full plan. I played no part in this, had I known the full details you would have been told.”
“Imoo how do you expect us to trust you after this?” Kopa snapped.
“Kopa, Aketch please believe me I did not want this. When he came home with them, I tried to convince him to return them. He is mad. I tried to find a way to bring them to you, it was to much of a risk alone. All I have to offer you is who I am. I am not him,” Imoo said hanging his head before walking away.
The pride turned to face each other. The friendship between the youngsters was at last revealed to the anger of their parents. Accusations of being irresponsible, foolish and even traitors were thrown around. When Rafiki spoke up in support of the youngsters the anger increased, the parents furious that he had supported them. The four present argued their case well, in part shaming their parents in their blindness. In the end the arguments returned to the matter at paw, how to deal with Scar's threat. Despite the threat Simba was reluctant to assault the Outlands directly.
“Then what do you say we do? We can’t just sit here Dad. You heard the time limit,” Kopa shouted furiously.
“We need to plan how to react. Getting angry will not help us!” Sarafina snapped.
“Well then what plan!” Aketch snarled springing to her paws. “I am not going to sit here until you come up with one.”
“Aketch is right. I will not leave Nassor's nor Kiara's fates to chance,” Kopa snarled, running out of the cave with Aketch without a backward glance.
Consumed by rage they ran through the savannah, fearing for their siblings yet enraged at Simba's apparent indecisiveness. Reaching the Gorge they skidded on an abrupt halt at the edge of the cliffs. Looking at each other in pain they sat down overlooking the very place where the fighting had begun. Her heart breaking Aketch curled up on the rocks, one paw dangling over the edge while her eyes stared into space. Slowly a plan began to form in Kopa's mind. Some time later Imoo sat down next to them silent, he too lost in thought and aware of the significance of the location.
“I’ve got a plan,” Kopa said, breaking the heavy silence at last. “Only its risky thought but it might just work.”
“What is it Kopa,” Aketch replied pricking up her ears.
“We go into the Outlands, the three of us together,we go get Kiara and Nassor. Imoo if you help us..........”
“I can do that,” Imoo replied proudly. “My Mother is taking care of them, she does not agree with what Scar has done. She has a line that she will not cross , harming innocent cubs..........she just won't do that. She would be willing to help you.”
“Imoo can you be certain, if we go in there..........” Kopa replied searching his friend's face for any hint of deceit.
“I know my own Mother well enough Kopa, she was sickened by Scar's actions.”
“So then we go in?”Aketch said looking between the two cousins. “Do well tell your parents or not?”
“We tell them, we might be able to guarantee Zira's reaction but if we run into anyone else we might be in trouble.”
Returning to Pride Rock that evening the trio were met by shocked faces when they adults saw them. Listening to the cub's plan the adults could barely believe their ears, the plan took daring to the extreme. Once the shock had worn off and they began to discuss the plan Simba began to realize that it could actually work. With the help of the pride, the crocodiles and birds it would be possible for all parties to survive. As the sun set on the horizon Simba and his friends set about turning Kopa's idea into a detailed plan. Sitting with them Imoo was frequently as his opinion and to provide details of his home. Listening to the son Scar, Simba slowly began to see the differences between father and son. For the first time since meeting Imoo, Simba allowed himself to let a spark of hope into his heart.
“If Imoo can help free Kiara and Nassor I will know he can be trusted. After my daughter comes safely home I will reconsider my opinion. No......saving two lives is worth more than that..........Imoo is betraying is parents and pride to help those he has been taught to hate. If tomorrow is a success Imoo will be invited to join this pride.”
In the depth of night the lions drifted off to sleep, some sleeping better than others. Deep in the Outlands two cubs called out for their mothers while Zira watched them with sorrow. She was a mother and she was missing two of her cubs. She had noticed her son's absence, unlike Scar who had brushed it off with a roguish grin, she felt there was more going on then a teenager playing away. Unknown to all the day of reckoning would soon be upon them.
Child of Treachery
The following day, in the purplish and bluish light of twilight Imoo led Kopa, Aketch and Akil into the Outlands. They crossed at one of the lessor known borders, the one that connected the Outlands to the Elephants Graveyard. In the river Sobeck and Buzaubi swum along silently while the rest of Simba's pride gathered in foliage around the border. Jumping into the river Kopa and Aketch rolled in the mud in an attempt to conceal their looks, if asked they planned to say there were rouges who had come to assist Scar. They were banking on the proviso that within the land the guards were youngsters who would not be able to recognise Kopa close up. Swiftly they passed through the land, avoiding the small herds and all the guards.
Reaching the heart of the kingdom they found the youngsters stood on guard, all greeting Imoo with respect. Luck appeared on their side, Scar along with all experienced lioness were stationed along the borders with the Pridelands. Swiftly Imoo told the guard he had seen Simba and Ni stationed at the border with the Elephants Graveyard and that they should inform Scar. Reassured by his presence they did so without question. Entering the cave they found Zira laying on a soft bed with four cubs curled up beside her. Seeing them enter she smiled, the shadow of the young lioness she had once been showing on her lean form.
“Mother we are here for the cubs, Kiara and Nassor are innocents,” Imoo said in a powerful voice.
“I will not prevent their siblings taking them, I never agreed to your father's plan.”
“Zira thank you for taking care of them,” Kopa said, walking over to pick up Kiara.
“I would never harm an innocent cub Prince Kopa, think what you will of me but I have have a line which I will not cross,” Zira replied turning back to her son. “Imoo do not mistake me for a fool in the past I have witnessed you playing with Prince Kopa and this female here. When Scar hears he will call you traitor, even now as he prepares to assault the Pridelands.”
“Mom you have to find a way to stop this!”
“Nothing will stop Scar from taking when rightfully belong to him, I may be helping you in this but your father should regain his kingdom.”
In a swift motion Aketch picked up Nassor, with a last look at Zira the young lions bolted from the den. Running through the land they kept to the shadows, Akil constantly looking ahead for any hint of danger. Twice they had to hide on his orders as the young lioness they had spoken to earlier returned to their posts. Tensions ran high, Kiara and Nassor would often whimper in fear, unable to understand the need for silence. Finally the river border came into view, the eyes of Ni and Tama just visible in the foliage. Looking left and right they saw no hint of trouble, only the eyes of their friends. Nodding to one another they broke cover, at the exact moment that Scar and Aina came around a bend with a band of lioness. Time seemed to stand still. Scar's eyes widened with utter rage at the sight of his heir turning traitor. Rage erupted from the old king. Before he could act the youngsters crossed the border into the Pridelands.
“Imoo traitorous son. You have damned your so called friends will now suffer, I will attack their kingdom for your betrayal,” Scar roared.
With his words ringing in their ears the group raced home, arriving back to find Nala and Kula pacing. Relief flooded through the lions at the sight of the cubs, their fears of maltreatment utterly unfounded.
“Simba we were seen leaving, Scar is coming to attack you all,” Imoo stammered choking back tears. “He attacks because on the basis of my betrayal, I am sorry for what I have brought you.”
“Imoo you are not to blame!” Simba replied placing a paw on his shoulder. “You saved the lives of two cubs. Scar has been looking for a reason to fight for a long time, had it not been over you he would have found another. We will fight them all, for our home!”
“FOR OUR HOME!” roared the pride in unison.
“Imoo today you proved yourself worthy of the trust my son gave you. If you are willing I would be honoured to have you fight at with us.”
“I will fight with you,” Imoo replied proudly facing the pride. “I will fight with my friends for the defence of their home.”
Messages were despatched throughout the kingdom rallying the subjects and warning them. From Pika returned news that the wild dogs would watch their borders while cheetahs offered their services as scouts. At Pride Rock Nala, Kiara, Kula, Nassor and Sarabi took refuge in a small cave under the watchful eyes of guards.
Out on banks of the river that bordered the two kingdoms two prides assembled to fight. Imoo stood proudly by Kopa's side, while Aketch stood on his right. On the side of the Outside Nuka stood next to Scar, filled with pride at being accepted by his father at last.
“So here are are once again Simba, a fight for the throne. My own son turned traitor stands at your side, I am surprised.”
“The only traitor is your own heart,” Imoo snarled.
“They will never truly accept you cub, you will never escape my legacy, everything you do they will scrutinized.”
“You are wrong Scar, Imoo will be accepted by my pride, he is my cousin. Last chance Scar, walk away,” Simba roared.
“Ah little Simba still unable to kill a family member.”
With ferocious snarls the battle began. Both prides fought viscously, Aina taking on the role that usually belonged to Zira. Ni fought side by side with his family, attacking Aina and others. Nearby Simba faced three at once. Nuka and Kopa faced one anther, Nuka roaring with pain at a bite to the leg. Aketch fought Aina while Imoo faced off against his former friends. A roar of pain drifted to the prince's ear, Kopa turned to see Scar knocking Tama to the floor. Seeing the pain in her eyes anger boiled inside Kopa, in a flash sprang at Scar, landing between the pair of lions. .
“This is for MY GRANDFATHER!” Kopa roared swiping Scars right shoulder.
For a brief second Scar saw the ghostly form of Mufasa standing next to Kopa. Uncle and nephew faced each other on the river bank, mirroring the fight between Simba and Scar years before. Looking around Simba's heart stopped as he watched his son attack his uncle, utter fearing racing through his blood.
“KOPA NO LEAVE HIM!”Simba roared in desperation.
Weakened though he was Scar still had experience on his side, in a tricky move Scar forced Kopa to stumble slightly. As Kopa staggered to his paws Scar raised a paw to strike, in at exact moment, Ni jumped in front of Kopa, taking the full force of the blow to the right side of his face. His vision swimming Ni pounced, hitting Scar squarely in the chest, sending them both tumbling into the murky water.
“DAD” Aketch yelled breaking away from her fight.
“FATHER,” Nuka cried running into the river.
The battle seemed to stop as Nuka and Aina raced into the river with Aketch on their tail. In the water they found a very weak Scar while Ni lay dazed on the bank. In one look Nuka and Aina knew what had happened, Scar was dying. Just as Ahadi had predicted the birth of Kiara, Nassor, Kovu and Vitani had marked the end for the old king. Seeing his son Scar smiled, his eyes widening in surprise as Imoo joined his brother.
“Tell Zira I love her and that I forgive her. Imoo you are traitor. ALL HEAR THIS I PROCLAIM KOVU MY HEIR!” Scar roared, a roar which was heard by every member of both prides.
Time stood still, in the fading light of day Scar, one called Taka, son of Ahadi and Ure passed into the realm of the Great Kings. The Outsider roared in grief, tears fell freely from the eyes of Nuka and Imoo. Though the latter chose another path Scar was still his father. Walking over Kopa and Simba each put a paw on the shoulder of the young lion. Looking down at his uncle Simba bowed his head, remembering the fun he had once shared with him as a cub. For the briefest of times two factions were united in shared grief.
“Traitor Imoo. Father is dead because of you,” Nuka snarled angrily .
“Nuka our Father decided his own fate, he could have chosen to live in peace,” Imoo replied sadly.
“We will never forgive you, Mother will hate you!”
“I know. Simba I must go with them........I need to see my Mother one last time....I.”
“You do not have to explain Imoo, I understand,” Simba replied gently.
A short time later Imoo stood in the Outslands, Scar's body had been laid to rest and Imoo now stood facing Zira. Raw grief shone in her eyes, the pain of loss evident, her heart shattered. The news of Scar's decree had come as a suprise, yet it had also filled her with determiantion.
“Imoo I love you, nothing could ever change that, hearbreaker though you are,” Zira said softly, nuzzling her son. “Be safe be happy in your new life. You have managed something your father and I could never could. Goodbye my son.”
Turning away Imoo left the Outlands, passing his brother and former friends on the way. Hatred burned brightly in their eyes. The call of traitor echoing in Imoo's wake. A flicker of guilt crossed his heart, guilt that his actions helped lead to his father's death. Near the border Nuka stood proudly. Seeing one another the two brothers stared at each other, anger and sorrow shining in Nuka's eyes.
“How the mighy have fallen, the favoured son now called traitor,” Nuka said mockingley.
“Nuka you have to see the truth about the past. Our father has died, don't let the cycle of hate continue.”
“Our father was the rightful king, unlike you I will fight to retake the Pridelands from Simba.”
“I am sorry we have to part on these terms,” Imoo replied sadly crossing the border.
At Pride Rock the members of Simba's Pride were taking stock of the battle. All those who had fought bore some injuries. Though Ni had survived his fight was Scar had taken away the sight in his right eye, soon the eye would turn white. All agreed that luck had been on their side as the injuries could have been much worse.
“Scar is dead perhaps the past can be laid to rest,” Simba said softly. “I wish there had been a different way.”
“My son noting could have prevented this,” Sarabi whispered.
“Mother please don't try to speak you need to rest.”
“My time is ending my son,” Sarabi replied as Imoo walked hesitantly into the cave.
“I have said my goodbyes, my ties with the Outsiders have been cut.”
“Imoo you have proven yourself to me, I offer you a place within this pride,” Simba said smiling at the young lion.
“It would be an honour to accept King Simba.”
Roaring with delight Kopa, Aketch, Sudi and Akil gathered around their friend. From her bed Sarabi looked on her heart lifting at the sight of heirs united by friendship. Turning around Imoo caught her eye, proudly he bowed, in return Sarabi smiled, her eyes filled with love.
“The wounds have begun to heal, I am happy,” Sarabi whispered as Nala placed Kiara by her side.
Leaving the cave Kopa motioned for Imoo to follow him. Side by side the two cousins walked to the very edge of Pride Rock. In the golden light of sunset they looked out across the kingdom. Out of the light Mufasa stepped on the base of the rock, a handsome smile gracing his face. Imoo and Kopa watched as Sarabi walked down to join them, Yet something was different, Sarabi looked younger, healthier with a glow about her that they had never seen before. In the pink light two star crossed lovers were reunited. As if realizing they were being watched Mufass and Sarabi looked up to face Kopa and Imoo, happiness shining their eyes. The moment the sun set the pair vanished leaving the two cousins alone. The sun had set on the generation marked by hatred between two brothers and their friends. Tomorrow it would rise with the promise of hope in the form of friendship between the children of the savannah.
