A tale of two cousins
Joy of play
The sun shone brightly in the Pridelands, as the sun over the kingdom the lions went about their day. Six weeks had passed since the birth of Kiara and Nassor, son of Ni and Kula. The young cubs had been kidnapped by Scar a few days after being born while under the care of Sarabi. The cubs had been rescued by Kopa, Ni's daughter Aketch and Scar and Zira’s son Imoo.
Despite Imoo’s betrayal Scar had attacked the Pridelands. In the battle that followed Imoo had sided with Simba thus showing his true colours. In a dramatic fight Scar had been killed by Ni, who had been blinded in one eye during the fight. In his dying breath he had named Zira's son Kovu as his heir, despite the cub not being of his bloodline. Learning of her mate's death Zira had sworn to continue his fight. Though the Pridelanders had been victorious it came as little comfort when Sarabi died from the injuries she sustained when Scar had attacked her. That day had marked both an ending and a beginning as Imoo had been welcomed into the pride.
_____________________________________________________________________
Slowly the wounds were healing. In the shadow of Pride Rock, Aketch, Nala and Kula watched as Kiara and Nassor played beneath the trees. Caught up in their game they failed to see Imoo coming towards them through the foliage. With a bump and a yelp Nassor crashed into the older male's legs, sending him tumbling to the floor. Golden eyes met green as Imoo looked down at him, his eyebrows raised. Kula and Nala seemed to wait with baited breath.
“Careful Nassor,” Imoo smirked picking the cub up and dropping him into Kula's paws. “You might want to teach Nassor how to slow down.”
“I might just have Imoo,” Kula chuckled smiling.
The following day Imoo patrolled Pride Rock on guard duty. Passing around a corner he nearly ran into Kiara. Jumping to one side just in time he had a fleeting glimpse of Nassor as the cub flew past in hot pursuit. Watching the cubs he chuckled, delighted to see the cubs having so much fun. Just as Imoo was about to climb higher a defending crack resonated through the air, followed by the crying of terrified cub. Ice cold fear coursing his veins, Imoo ran towards the sound, his hearts hammering in his chest.
Skidding to a halt Imoo found Nassor staring at a very large hole where a large section of rock had collapsed. Fear was etched across the cub's face, little more than toddler in human terms he scared easily. Looking down into the hole Imoo saw Kiara laying huddled at the bottom, her golden eyes filled with fear, brown dust coating her fur with a few cuts along her legs and shoulder.
“IMOO HELP!” Kiara mewed with fear.
“Kiara you're going to be fine, stay there, I'm coming for you,” Imoo said gently.
In a swift bound Imoo jumped down into the hole, landing with a dull thud next to Kiara. Nuzzling his cousin Imoo ran an expert eye over her injuries, the cuts were numerous yet none seemed too deep. Picking Kiara up Imoo stood on his back legs, lifting her out of the hole easily. Climbing out himself Imoo gently licked her cheek.
“Ssshhh you’re,” Imoo whispered softly.
Gently Imoo picked up Kiara once more, with Nassor walking next to him the trio set off. Walking around the rocky path they soon heard roars of relief, coming towards them they saw a furious looking Nala and Kula accompanied by a young lioness who looked guilty and resentful.
“Kiara where have you been and what happened?” Nala asked seeing her daughter.
“A section of rock collapsed underneath her paws,”Imoo replied.
“She was lucky! Thank the Great Kings she has only cuts!”Nala snarled glaring at the young lioness.
“I'm surprised they even ended up there, given they are not allowed out of eye shot. I mean we all know that place has been in danger of collapse for a while,” Imoo said angrily.
“They slipped away from their sitter,” Kula snapped glaring at the young lioness. “We are very lucky you found them!”
That night Simba returned home with Zazu to find a sleepy Kiara curled up at Imoo's side, completely engrossed in the story Imoo was telling her. Walking away Simba found Nala watching the pair from some rocks. Yawning the king flopped down next to his queen. For a while they watched the two cousins together. Then Nala's eyes seemed to fill with sadness.
“Nala what is it?” Simba asked with concern.
“How do we explain Imoo's past to Kiara? She is too young to understand what happened but soon she ask how he is related to us.”
“We tell her the half-truth. That Imoo is her cousin by Mufasa's brother Taka. We say his parents died and that Imoo finds it upsetting to talk about them. When Kiara is old enough we can tell her the full truth.”
The days passed. Kiara and Nassor grew into lively young cubs who were the best of friends. Kiara had a day filled with adventure which ended with her meeting Kovu on the border of the Outlands. Arriving home from border patrol that same evening Kopa and Imoo listened to the tale in shock. Both were astounded Zira had been so restrained in her actions. Seeing the rage in Simba and Nala’s eyes Imoo shifted uncomfortably, feelings of shame over his birth surfacing and parentage swirling around in his mind.
A few days had passed since Kiara's meeting with Kovu, having been confined to Pride Rock she was thoroughly bored. Seeing her father walking towards her with Zazu, Kiara spied her chance.
“Daddy can I go exploring? Please? I won't go near the Outlands,” Kiara asked putting on her cutest smile.
“Only if someone goes with you.”
“DAD I'LL TAKE HER.”
Turing around, they saw Kopa walking down from the rocks above them, his unkempt mane blowing gently in the wind. Raising an eyebrow Simba looked between his two cubs. The sweet look on his daughter's face to his son's air of coolness with just a touch of teenage mischief. Turning his eyes to the heavens he sent a silent prayer to the Great Kings.
“Both of you stay out of trouble and away from the border. Do not anything stupid and back before sunset.”
“Seriously Dad?” Kopa asked, rolling his eyes beneath his mane that was stuck up at all angles.
“You caused your fair share of trouble.”
“Rrreeellaaxx. If I can handle border patrol I can easily handle one cub sister, how hard can watching her be?”
“Harder than you think,” Simba laughed, the look on his son's face clearly showing that Kopa didn't believe him.
Leaving their home brother and sister ran side by the side through the lush green savannah. Herds scattering in their wake. Brother and sister pounced playful on one another, rolling in the soft earth they were soon covered from nose to tail in dirt.
Darting in a patch of forest on the banks of the river Kopa led Kiara to his favourite climbing tree. The tree was strong with thick branches that stretched out over the water. With a nod of his head Kopa pointed to the tree, a daring grin on his face. Catching his challenge Kiara grinned in reply, a wicked glint in her eyes. In a flash Kopa began to climb with Kiara following closely behind them. The high took the young cub’s breath away, for a second fear entered her eyes and heart, after all they were quite high up. Gracefully Kopa stepped onto a thick branch that hung over the water followed by Kiara, the strong tree easily supporting their weight. Standing on the branch Kiara felt a thrill of danger. Seeing his sister's uncertainly Kopa briefly placed a paw around her in reassurance.
“Kia look down, look what we can see,” Kopa whispered.
Looking across the river Kiara gasped in awe as the wonder of what she was doing sank in. In the clear water that glittered in the sunlight fish were visibly beneath the surface, crocodiles basked on the banks, water birds bathing in shallows while hippos wallowed in the mud. The mighty river traffic passed underneath them while the events on the river bank went on around them. Crouching down the pair dangled their tails and paws from the tree, utterly happy just to watch the comings and goings.
In the midst of the morning the peace was shattered by a furious commotion. Sitting up the pair saw two adolescent jackals having a heated debate with a pair of adult vultures, the birds clearly furious that the jackals attempts to steal their lunch. The vultures saw the jackal's actions as an insult. The argument was heated with the vocabulary language turning the air a rich shade of blue.
“Time to intervene before this gets out of paw,” Kopa said looking across at the scene.
Gracefully the pair climbed down from their perch, arriving just in time to prevent one of vultures attacking one of the jackals. Letting out a roar Kopa stopped both sides in their tracks, the vultures looking at the jackals with smug smiles.
“ENOUGH! Why did the two of you attempt to steal food?” Kopa asked looking at the jackals.
“We er.....” one of them began shakily.
“Well we saw the food first in the water.
“Yeh that's it and we were hungry. They and their family have been at this spot all season, we wanted in,” the first jackal began, explaining his side.
The argument was flimsy and stealing of food was against the law when there was plenty to go around. Though the law was notoriously hard to enforce in thefts from larders, the blatant stealing of food was always punished. Kopa rapidly losing patience with the jackal's brazen lies, their lack of respect for the law and their utter arrogance.
“Enough! I saw you break the law with my own eyes. As punishment for your theft you are banned from hunting along the river for thirty days.”
“You can't do that!”
“Kope will be king one day, he can punish you,” Kiara said proudly.
“Awe keep your nose out of things you don't understand little cub.”
A collective gasp when up from the other animals, the vultures looking at each other evilly. The jackals stood still. Anger filled Kopa's eyes while Kiara looked at the pair with annoyance.
“Never say that to my sister again. You have just earned four nights spent in the cells over in the Elephants Graveyard,” Kopa snarled as two wild dogs walked over to escort the pair away.
“Excellent decision sire,” one of the vultures said flapping his wings.
“Thank you. That pair have been causing my Father and Uncle Pumba a headache for the past two months, the theft was the twig that broke the zebra's back.”
Leaving the vultures to enough their meal Kopa and Kiara walked away into the savannah. Watching them pass by the hearts of the older animals rejoiced to see two siblings united by love.
Hidden Friendship
A few weeks had passed since the initial meeting of Kovu and Kiara, to the adults it appeared Zira had taken Simba's words to heart. Yet unknown to both sides Kovu and Kiara had met by accident ten days later. After that meeting they had decided to meet again in secret to play. To the horror of both they had been seen by Kopa, Akil and Imoo. Paralysed by the fear the cubs had waited for the fury of condemnation they had expected, both knowing all too well that Kovu was exiled from the Pridelands. In an act which had surprised them both instead of condemnation had come understanding. Akil, Kopa and Imoo had given the cubs’ permission to play together provided they agreed to being accompanied by one of them. Kiara and Kovu had jumped at the offer. Imoo had then suggested the Gorge could be a regular meeting point, the one place they could play without fear of being caught by either set of parents. One memorable afternoon Kovu and Kiara had discovered a nest of bats in one of the caves, the bats had not taken kindly to their presence, proceeding to chase the pair out of their cave in a vast swarm of black.
The decision to allow Kiara and Kovu to play together had not been taken lightly by either Akil, Kopa or Imoo, all fully aware of the risks involved. Sitting on a ledge above the Gorge a few weeks later the two cousins looked down at the cubs playing below them.
“Kopa did we make the right call? I know we did the same as them........but,”Imoo sighed.
“I've been thinking the same thing. I guess the situation has changed a lot since we were cubs. Is it the situation or the fact that you want to tell Kovu who you are?”
“Both. He is my brother...................it doesn’t feel right to deceive him. I've heard what he has said about Zira. I hoped Mother would turn away from that life. I don't want that for him. If there was something I could do to chance things…………...”
“Listen we are between a rock and a hard place. I figure Kovu and Kiara would still meet even without our blessing, seeing as they defied my Dad's orders. The best thing we can do is watch them to keep them safe,” Kopa replied the sound of hooves drifted towards them.
Turning their attention in the direction of the sound their eyes widened in horror. A huge herd of wilder beast was stampeding towards them in a cloud of dirt hotly perused by four adolescent wild dogs. In a flash Imoo's eyes whipped to where Kovu and Kiara were playing, the pair utterly oblivious to the danger. Time seemed to stand still. From the air Akil dropped like a stone, he had seen the commotion while flying over the Gorge and had decided to investigate. Seeing Kiara and Kovu his heart missed a beat, in an instant he dropped down to where Imoo and Kopa stood.
“KIARA KOVU RUN!” Kopa roared, jumping down onto the Gorge floor.
Time slowed to crawl; both cubs saw the stampede, the looks of horror on their brother's faces and began to run. It was as if history repeating itself with the children of the original actors. The stampede poured down the Gorge, the lions running for their lives. Dodging this way and that the cubs raced in front of the herd while their brother ran through it, trying desperately to reach them. This time fate had a different plan, Kovu and Kiara managed to reach the end of the Gorge. Skidding on some lose rocks they fell down the cliff face into a nest of thorns.
“KIARA!”Kopa roared, skidding to halt at the cliff edge with Imoo beside him.
“KOVU WHERE ARE YOU?” Imoo called, a note of fear in his voice.
For a few agonising seconds silence greeted their calls. From the air Akil desperately searched for the cubs through the thorns. Then to the teenager’s relief Kiara's voice broke through the silence.
“Kopa help, we're trapped.”
“Are you hurt?”
“Yes, Kopa my right paw hurts a lot. Kovu's left back leg is bleeding badly and he's hit his head,” Kiara called, her voice filled with panic.
“Kiara relax we'll try to find a way down to you. Akil is going to fly down to you to guide you. Slowly walk toward the cliff, take it slow.”
“Kopa I'm scared,” Kiara whimpered.
“I know you are. Kia I promise everything will be fine.”
“Kovu do the same as Kiara, sit tight until Akil reaches you, don't try any heroics,” Imoo called.
“I am an Outsider, Mother said I have to be able to free myself from trouble,” Kovu replied brazenly.
“You are still a cub Kovu, not matter what she said at times even Outsiders need help.”
Taking to the air Akil began to assess the situation, as he did so the young wild dogs choose that moment to appear. They wanted know why the cubs were there, despite the fact hunting in the Gorge was forbidden. Seeing the dogs Imoo and Kopa's blood began the boil, eyes blazing with fury they turned to face the dogs.
“YOU BLAZING FOOLS!” Kopa roared with rage. “TWO YOUNG CUBS NEARLY DIED FOR YOUR STUPIDITY. I SHOULD HAVE YOU PERMENTLY BANNED FROM HUNTING IN THE PRIDE LANDS!!”
“YOU WILL FACE THE FULL FORCE OF THE LAW,” Imoo roared. “WHEN SIMBA HEARS ABOUT THIS HE WILL BE FURIOUS!”
Seeing the rage in their eyes the wild dogs quailed, in that moment they feared for their own futures. Turning tail they ran for their home, knowing there would be a reckoning in the near future. Swiping at the air with rage Imoo and Kopa turned their attentions back to the nest of thorns. To their relief they could see Akil guiding Kovu and Kiara up the cliff along a path that was almost indistinguishable from the rocks around it. In the light the extent of the cub's injuries were clear. Kovu was limping badly on a hurt back paw, his body covered in a hundred fine cuts with a large gash on the right side of this head. Kiara was in a similar state though her cuts appeared longer and deeper with bruising blossoming on her left shoulder.
“We have to get both of you home, Mum is going to have fit when she sees you,” Kopa groaned.
“Kovu we have to get going,” Imoo said looking at the cub's injuries. “Zira is going to pitch a fit when she finds out.”
“You know my Mother?” Kovu asked in surprise.
“I...I used to,” Imoo replied, turning away with eyes filled with regret. “Come on.”
Turning his back on Kopa and Kiara, Imoo led Kovu through the Pridelands, all the while listening to Kovu talk about Zira. Reaching the border the pair halted in their tracks, to their horror Nuka was waiting for them. In the space of a second anger, disgust and utter contempt based over the Outsider’s face.
“Come on Kovu, Mother has been looking for you all day,” Nuka snapped utterly ignoring Imoo.
“Bye Imoo,” Kovu called sadly as he crossed the border.
“Goodbye, brother,” Imoo whispered softly, turning away towards home.
Arriving back home he found the entire pride in an uproar. Kopa and Kiara had returned. While Kiara was treated by Rafiki, Kopa had given a full account of the accident to his parents. To say both were furious was an understatement, Simba was mad beyond belief in a fit of rage that could rival Scar. For the sake of their siblings Imoo and Kopa had neglected to mention Kovu’s part in the events, which given the circumstances proved a good thing. The wild dogs received a roasting from Simba and Nala along with a two month ban from hunting in the Pridelands. Their problems increased when the wild dog leader Pika learned of the events, as Pika’s son Dumisa reported the following day his father’s shouting could be heard for miles.
Time is the world’s greatest healer, for cubs time heals very quickly, Kovu and Kiara soon recovered from their injuries. Despite the minor harm to their bodies the incident did nothing to harm their friendship. Having witnessed and heard accounts of Kovu slipping off Zira had grown suspicious where he was going and who he was with. Unable to coax or trick any information from her son the old lioness decided to find out by fair means or foul.
_____________________________________________________________________
In the cool evening air Kovu and Kiara chased each across the plateau above the Gorge. Nearby Kopa and Imoo watched the pair, lazily attempting to chase a couple of birds. Climbing onto a section of rock the pair let out of the loudest roars they could manage.
“So this is where you go!”
Turning around the pair looked in horror to see Zira and Nuka emerge from a patch of shrubbery, almost immediately Imoo and Kopa sprang to their paws. Tension crackled in the air, the cubs all too aware of what they had done.
“Kovu you will go home with Nuka,” Zira said in a silkily voice edged with anger.
Taking one look at his mother Kovu slowly climbed down from the rock, with a last look at Kiara he allowed Nuka to lead him away.
“Kiara it’s time for us to go home,” Kopa called, looking between Zira and Imoo.
“Coming Kopa,” Kiara replied in a shaking voice.
Climbing down Kiara kept one eye on Zira and one eye on her brother. Seeing her fear Kopa placed a paw around her shoulder, all the times keeping his eyes locked on Zira. With a last look at his cousin Kopa lead Kiara away.
Once the pair were safely out of earshot Imoo and Zira turned to face each other. It had been months since mother and son had last met.
“So Kovu was playing with Kiara. He is keeping to my plan in ways I did not expect, I am pleased,” Zira said smiling with glee
“Kovu is a good cub,” Imoo replied calmly.
“I am not pleased to learn that you have been present. I will not have your influence corrupt him, he will not become a traitor. He will be the heir you never became.”
“Mother let Kovu go, don't force him down the path of hatred,” Imoo implored.
“Kovu will follow the path Scar decided, he will not betray the cause.”
“That may change if I tell Kovu who I am and what truly happened during Scar's reign. I am warning you Mother, if Kovu every lays a paw on my family he will suffer the consequences.”
“You would not dare! I love my son not matter what you think. If you harm him……”
“If you love him then let him choose his own life, let go of the past.”
“NEVER. I will never betray Scar. My pride, your own twin brother, are dedicated to fighting to reclaiming to lands that belong to Scar.”
“Would Nuka give his life for the cause, would you?”
“Gladly I would give my life as would Nuka,” Zira replied proudly.
“A day will come when those worlds may come back to haunt you.”
Snarling with anger Zira lunged at her son, jumping just in time Imoo managed to dodge her attack. Landing with a heavy thud on the ground Zira snarled, her vision swimming she struggled to stand. Those few seconds were enough time for Imoo to pounce, before Zira could never react she found herself pinned to the floor. In amazement she stared up at her son, aware for the first time just how strong he had become. Older and weaker, Zira was at the mercy of her son. In that moment the fate of both pride hung in the balance.
“Kill me then if you have the guts!”
“Killing you would only ensure the fighting continued. No Mother unlike you I can see the long term future,” Imoo replied.
His eyes filled with hatred Imoo let his mother up for despite all that had passed he still loved her. Gasping for breath Zira faced her son. For a moment the love they felt for one another broke through the hatred.
“You are not as ruthless as your father, he would have killed me had he been in your place. Such a waste, you could have been a powerful king.”
“Killing you would only further the violence. Take a word of advice Mother. When the cubs are old enough leave the Outlands. Find a place far away from here where you can make a fresh start. At least allow Kovu and Vitani the chance to decide their fate by telling them the truth.”
Turning away Imoo headed home to Pride Rock, his mind full of worries for the future. Arriving home he found an upset Kiara being comforted by Kopa, her eyes filled with pain at the thought of not seeing Kovu again. Seeing her pain Imoo turned away, guilt ridden at the part he had played in the events. Seeking solitude he climbed to the very top of Pride Rock. In the evening sun he could see the kingdom spread out before him. Guild, shame at his past, despair, self-loathing and self-doubt enveloped him. A darkness threatening to consume him just as it did his father.
Young and Free
The summer moved on, Imoo, Kopa, Sudi, Akil, Dumisa and Aketch continued to grow. Now the human equivalent of teens all were starting to take an interest in the opposite sex. Handsome, intelligent and charming they were a charmed group. In the pride tensions began to appear between Imoo, Kopa and Aketch as the boys took increasing interest in the younger females.
In the midst of the summer two rouges appeared in the kingdom. Both were lean yet healthy with a devil may care vibe about them that spelt trouble. Meeting Imoo and Aketch the pair allowed themselves to be taken to meet Simba. One of them, calling himself Chancer openly flirting with Aketch along the way. Flattered by his attention, Aketch flirted back. The other calling himself Rebel asked the pair about the land. Arriving at Pride Rock the pair were met by Simba, both males asking for chance to rest and hunt. Seeing their demeanour Simba took their measure in an instant.
“This pair will bring trouble if I allow them to stay. Then again they could be even more trouble if I don't.”
“I will allow you to stay here for a short time. You will obey the laws of this kingdom, breaking them will result in your immediate expulsion.”
“As you wish Sire, we'll do anything for an easy life,” Chancer replied with a bold grin.
That evening the pride gathered around the rocks. The new visitors proving an attraction for the younger lions, including the cubs who gathered around them. On a rock Chancer sat next to Aketch, Nassor and Kiara telling the three Pridelanders all about his adventures.
“So we get to this kingdom by the coast and that’s when the fur started to fly. It was ruled by a pair called Zola and Delmar who were not happy to have us. Turned out Rebel was born in the king's old pride. You should have seen the argument, lion everyone could hear it, talk about fur raising!”
“What happened then?” Nassor asked eagerly.
“Well once Delmar had finished interrogating Rebel about their old pride we had to deal with Queen Zola. I am telling you that lioness was sharp! She gave us a real going over then told us we had four days to rest in the kingdom. They made sure of it as well. They had two of their friends, a lion called Chumvi and this lioness Masika escorted us out.”
Hearing the names Nala, Kula and Sarafina eyes widened in shock. Unknown to Chancer he brought with him news of three former members of the pride. For it was the same Chumvi who had been Simba and Nala's friend. Masika was the daughter of an Outsider who was Zira’s second in command. Of greater significance and concern was the news of Zola. For Zola was the daughter of Scar and Zira. On the very night that Simba had returned she had left the pride with a male called Wanderer seeking freedom from her parent's cruelty. Out of love for her friend Nala had kept her existence from Simba. Pridelanders and Outsiders alike believed she had died or simply vanished.
“Chancer that is enough, it is time my son went to bed,” Kula said walking over.
“Whatever you say Kula. Sorry kid looks like we have to cut this short, I'll see you in the morning.”
“See you Chancer,” Nassor called, following Kula into the cave.
“Kiara it is time you were in bed as well,” Nala said walking over.
“Muumm do I have to? Chancer was just telling a story,” Kiara groaned.
“Bed. I am sure Chancer will be willing to finish his story tomorrow.”
Returning a short time later Nala and Kula walked over to Chancer who had been drawn into conversation by Sarafina. Glancing around the pair saw Simba, Timon, Pumba, Zazu and Kopa chatting to Rebel. With a look to one another the lionesses sat down, a plan shining in their eyes.
“So Chancer, this King Delmar and Queen Zola, what were they like?” Nala asked casually.
“Well apart from being hostile to us they were good rulers. From what they told me they had only been rulers for a couple of years. They were happy together, you could see the way they looked at one another they loved each other.”
Smiling at each other Nala and Kula felt a wave of relief wash through them as Chancer told them more about Zola and Demlar and their kingdom by the sea. It was clear to Nala that Delmar was in fact Wanderer.
“Zola is happy, I made the right choice all those years ago. I wonder how they became a king and queen. I suppose that will remain a mystery. She has some of her parent's characteristics. One day we could be reunited, Simba would not feel threatened now she has a kingdom of her own to rule. One day perhaps.”
Over the next few days Chancer and Rebel made themselves at home. To the surprise of everyone Rebel and Nassor struck up a friendship which resulted in the pair spending a lot of time together. It appeared Rebel had a hidden caring side to his nature that reassured the pride. The initial attraction between Chancer and Aketch had continued and deepened much to the displeasure of Ni. The pair were often seen out together in the savannah, sometimes till late at night. Imoo felt uneasy about the pair but his concerns over the Outsiders outweighed any worries he had over the new rouges. Kopa on the other paw had a different view, he was concerned about the growing closeness of the pair.
Coming home late one night after a day exploring nearby mountains Chancer and Aketch found Kopa waiting for them. The look on his face showed that Kopa was not happy about their actions. Rolling his eyes Chancer walked passed with complete disregard for the prince. Walking into the cave Chancer left Kopa and Aketch alone in the still night.
“You're back late again Aketch, you've been out with Chancer all day.”
“What if I have, what does it matter to you who I choose to send spend time with?” Aketch snapped scowling at Kopa.
“He's a rouge. Worse, a rouge with a reputation. I can't understand what you see in him. He's trouble, he' doesn’t care about anyone or anything.”
“Hold it Kopa you don't have the right to criticize me! Chancer lives life on his own terms and has seen so much of the world. Besides since when did you start to care who I spend time with?”
“Since you started spending time with a lion who’s a known trouble causer! I don't want to see you get hurt. ”
“You don't want me to get hurt. Please spare me the whole being noble act. You're just jealous that a male has taken an interest in me. If I want to spend time with him then I will and you cannot stop me.”
Flicking her tail in anger Aketch stalked off into the cave leaving Kopa fuming outside. Gazing at his friend’s back Kopa slashed the air in anger in frustration. In the cave Aketch lay seething in anger at what she saw as Kopa’s interference
As Ni and Simba both feared Chancer and Rebel lived up to their dubious reputations. Rebel proved to be a very slipper customer who out tricked two jackals, the very same two that had crossed Kopa. To Ni’s disgust Chancer cheated on Aketch with one of the young Outsiders. This was the straw that broke the zebra’s back, escorted by Simba, Ni, Kopa and Imoo the two rouges were showed to the borders. To the great surprise of the Pridelanders, Chancer’s girlfriend was there waiting for them. Reputation or not Chancer was delighted to see her.
“Well they are three of a kind,” Ni said watching them leave.
“Heaven help those they meet, Chancer’s girl is a feisty one,” Imoo said slyly.
“As long as they don’t come back here,” Simba replied.

Out in the savannah a couple of weeks later Kopa, Dumisa and Imoo relaxed in the later afternoon sun. The trio had spent the previous five nights on border duty, having come to the end of their stretch they were eager for fun. Looking up Kopa caught sight of a group of very beautiful girls. The group was made up of cheetahs, a wild dog, and a leopard. Almost instantly the ears of Imoo and Dumisa pricked up with interest. Realizing they were being watched the girls turned around, smiles appearing as they caught sight of the boys.
“See something interesting boys?” asked one of the cheetahs.
“Yes, very interesting,” Kopa replied smiling walking over to the girls.
“What may that be?”
“You. Might I have your name beautiful?”
“My name is Zuri. Well then Prince Kopa you mind me interesting, I find you very interesting as well. Seems we have an understanding.”
“I'd say we do. My good friends here couldn't help but notice the beauty of your friends. They would very much like if you would come over to join us in the shade.” “Girls what do you say?” Zuri replied turning to face her friends.
“Hhmm well the boys are very handsome,” the leopard replied looking at Imoo.
“Well I do know Dumisa, it could be fun,” the female wild dog.
Grinning mischievously the girls joined the boys under the tree. Relaxing together the teens flirted with each other, Zuri laying back against Kopa while her leopard friend chatted to Imoo. The two wild dogs sat together flirting outrageously, they knew each other well and had an existing attraction.
“You girls are brave to hang out with us, sure you won't get into trouble?” Imoo asked.
“We like trouble,” the leopard replied kissing Imoo.
Trouble was one word to describe what happened with the girls. The six began dating, with the person they had been attracted to that first day. Given that Imoo and Kopa were dating a leopard and a cheetah respectively their relationships were kept on the sly. Interspecies relationships were highly frowned upon, for a prince it was completely taboo, Simba would have a fit if he found out. The danger was part of the thrill for the teens, an act of pure rebellion against their parents. _____________________________________________________________________
In the fading light of the setting sun Simba walked home through the Elephants Graveyard, having just completed his weekly meeting with Pika, father of Dumisa and ruler of the wild dogs. To his surprise the sound of his son's voice drifted towards him. Smiling he walked in the direction of the voice. Turning around a pile of bones he stopped in his tracks. In front of him stood Kopa and Zuri, both of whom were kissing.
“KOPA WHAT IN THE GREAT KING'S!” Simba roared ferociously.
Seeing his father's anger a shiver of fear ran down Kopa's back. Taking a deep breath he turned to face Simba with a look of utter defiance on his face. At the same time Zuri fixed Simba with a cold glare.
“Father meet by girlfriend Zuri,” Kopa said in a steady voice.
“GIRLFRIEND! Kopa you foolish cub. Home NOW,” Simba roared in fury.
“I'm sorry about this Zuri, I had better go before my Father does something dramatic,” Kopa whispered kissing Zuri.
“I understand, goodbye handsome,” Zuri replied running her tail under his cheek.
Smirking Kopa watched as Zuri headed away to the Pridelands, taking pleasure from the look of thunder on his father's face. Father and son walked home in silence both utterly fuming at one another. Anger taking hold Kopa took to his paws running through the savannah he arrived home to find Nala waiting for him. Seeing the look on her son's face apprehension took hold in Nala. Moments later Simba appeared.
“Simba has something happened?” Nala asked, looking between her mate and son.
“Nothing sever Mum, Father is just being narrow minded and controlling,” Kopa spat in anger.
“Chance that tone Kopa or I will chance it for you. Nala your son has been dating a cheetah behind our backs. To make matters worse I learned today that Imoo has been seeing a leopard.”
“Kopa you fool,” Nala whispered in dismay. “You know well that interspecies relationships are forbidden. One of the oldest laws, one of the few things that are forbidden for a prince.”
“Mum how can you side with Dad on this? I thought you would be more open minded!”
“Kopa it is forbidden for members of the royal family, you know this, we have talked about this in the past,” Simba snarled.
“Both of you relax I can handle a little gossip. Besides it’s not like I plan on marrying Zuri.”
“So you are playing with her affections. Kope we raised you better than that,” Nala snapped angrily.
“I'm not playing with her. Zuri knows exactly what is going on. You need to lighten up a little,” Kopa replied smirking.
Arriving at the entrance to the main cave he found Aketch waiting for him, a less than happy look on her face. Having heard the argument below she had decided to confront her friend, thinking he might listen to her even if he wouldn't listen to his parents.
“Kopa what were you thinking dating Zuri?”
“So much for keeping things a secret,” Kopa muttered rolling his eyes. “Who else knows?”
“The entire pride given the argument we just heard. What were both of you thinking?”
“You sound just like my Father,” Kopa retorted.
“At least that makes one of us!”
“I'll live my life the way I see fit!!”
Turning tail Kopa pushed passed her into the cave leaving Aketch to stew in the entrance to the cave. Hanging her head Aketch stalked into the cave, throwing herself down onto a rock as far away from Kopa as possible.
“Aketch would you like to talk?” Ni asked walking over to his daughter.
“Dad how can Kopa brush me off like that? We're supposed to be friends,” Aketch asked.
“Ae you just concerned for the welfare of your friend or is there more to it than that? I am only blind in one eye daughter.”
“There………..there is more,” Aketch whispered blushing. “I like Kopa a lot, over the past few months, I've fallen for him.”
“I suspected that might be the case,” Ni chuckled shaking his head.
“Daddy should I tell Kopa how I feel?”
“If you tell Kopa he could either accept your feels are reject them entirely. You could gain a mate or lose a friend. I can only say the choice is yours.”
“It’s hard seeing him with other girls.....” Aketch choked. “He never even looks at me as a potential mate. Is he that blind?”
“Kopa is a prince, it’s natural that he will lap up the attention he is given. What you have to understand about males is that we can mature slower than females. I suspect love and romance are far from his mind. In time Kopa may realize for himself that you are the one, it all depends on if you are willing to wait.”
Turning to her father Aketch began to speak than stopped as his words sank in. In her heart the young lioness felt bewildered by her conflicting emotions. Seeing his daughter in pain Ni sighed, he knew that her teenager years were going to be difficult, he had never considered just how difficult. Placing her head on her father’s shoulder Aketch looked out across the kingdom.
“I’m going to wait a little while longer to tell Kopa. If I wait a little bit then Kopa will be forced to break up with Zuri. Then I can tell him. I know Kopa, once he knows how I feel it will work out.”
Looking at his daughter Ni let his thoughts drift over the situation between his daughter and Kopa.
“I might need to have a conversation with Simba in the near future. Kopa will need a queen someday. Arranged marriages have been the norm in the past. One was not arranged for Kopa at birth due to the circumstances surrounding Scar. If Simba and Nala were willing to continue that custom Kopa and Aketch could be betrothed. It would easily solve the current problem with the cheetah. We have discussed the idea of them marrying in the past, we laughed at the thought they might fall in love. My suggestion might just be favourable with them.”
A change in the weather
The summer past, with it the third birthdays of Kopa, Imoo, Aketch, Sudi, Akil and Dumisa. Much to the annoyance of Simba the relationship between Kopa and Zuri continued as did Imoo's affair with the female leopard. Out with Simba and Nala one day Ni broached the subject of a betrothal between Kopa and Aketch. Though slightly surprised at first Simba and Nala quickly realized the benefit of the union. Both new the strong friendship between Kopa and Aketch and saw that it would benefit the kingdom to have the heir betrothed. After all they had been betrothed as cubs, what better than for two friends to marry? Talking together the parents began to plan to betrothal and how they would tell their cubs.
The tension between Simba, Kopa, Imoo and Ni continued to increase rocket as the older males tried to impart some advice to the youngsters. This attempt backfired in a spectacular way. The verbal battle could be throughout Pride Rock. The tension reached such a high that it broke into physical conflict to the horror of the pride. It took the combined forces of Nala, Tama, Kula, Sarafina and eight others to separate the fighting males. Gasping for breath younger and older males had glared at each other, both sides baring visible marks of the fight.
For the first time in their lives Imoo and Kopa had left Pride Rock in the midst of a storm without a word of goodbye. For three days the pair stayed away from home living at the furthest edge of the kingdom. While the two teens were away playing rebel Nala, Simba and Ni gathered for a conference. The fight had shown had brought home to them how much trouble the pair could cause if something didn’t chance. Looking at each other the adults knew the time had come for them to act.
Standing together on the top of Pride Rock a few evenings later Simba, Nala and Ni looked out over the kingdom.
“We have to get Kopa and Aketch betrothed as soon as possible, this situation cannot continue,” Simba said.
“I agree Simba, Kopa is heading for trouble, a betrothal will end the liaison with the cheetah.”
“We have discussed it with Zazu and Rafiki who are both in favour of the match. We can inform Kopa and Aketch as soon as we wish,” Simba replied.
“Given the ages of Kopa and Aketch there should be a formal betrothal ceremony. It is rare for an heir not to be betrothed, I am sure our subjects will be delighted to witness one,” Nala said smiling.
“You’re right Nala. My parents had one, we would have had one as teenagers had circumstances been different.”
“We need to handle this situation with care. Kopa and Aketch have to understand the reason but it has to be done in a way that does not alienate or turn them against the idea or cause them to rebel,” Ni said.
“They know that we love them, once we explain why they will understand. They are friends after all, Aketch already loves Kopa and I know he cares about her, perhaps this will allow him to realize his true feelings,” Nala said smiling.
Two days after Imoo and Kopa returned from their sojourn away Simba, Nala, Ni and Aketch approached Kopa as he was preparing to go on border patrol.
“My son we need to speak to you in private about a serious matter,” Simba said in a rather formal tone.
“Ok, but some else will need to take over my border patrol. Why are Ni and Aketch?” Kopa asked curiously.
“I have already arranged for Imoo to take over your patrol. The matter which we wish to discuss concerns them.”
In silence the adults led the cubs up to the very top of Pride Rock, the cubs looking at each other in utter confusion. Reaching the top the adults turned to face their cubs, looks of happiness and pride on their faces. A shiver of fear ran down the spines of both cubs.
“Kopa it is custom for the heir to the throne to be betrothed to a lioness who will one be his queen.” Simba began.
“Now the time has come for you to be betrothed Kopa, as custom we have chosen this lioness for you,” Nala said gently.
“Betrothed, Mum listen,” Kopa began, panic swirling through him.
“The lioness we have chosen is Aketch,” Simba said smiling.
Hearing the words Kopa and Aketch looked at each other in stunned silence, barely able to comprehend what they had heard. As the words sunk in Aketch’s heart did a flip with joy, her dream was going to come true. Looking at the adults a wide smile spread across her face. Seeing her look Ni, Simba and Nala smiled at one another.
“King Simba, Queen Nala I am honoured to have been chosen,” Aketch said bowing deeply.
“You are our son’s friend, I could think of no other lioness who I would rather have as my daughter in law,” Nala said.
“Friendship that will lead to love. Within a few days a formal ceremony will take place then within a season you will be married. Kopa you haven’t said anything, let’s hear your feelings,” Simba said looking at his son.
As the news had sunk in Kopa had stood in silence as he tried to process the sudden change in his life. Utterly stunned, the announcement had caught the young prince completely by surprise. The emotions of shock, dread, fear, apprehension, panic, anger and resentment were running through his body at once. While he had known marriage was expected he had expected it to come further down the line and to be able to choose his own bride. Aware of the four sets of eyes looking at him Kopa turned to face them, his face betraying his mixed emotions.
“I…….I…………….why didn’t you……….you never said anything about wanting me to be married………..if this is because of Zuri…..we never wanted to harm anyone………….it was all a bit of fun,” Kopa replied in utter panic.
“Kopa it is expected for a prince to be betrothed. I know this has perhaps come as a shock,” Nala said in attempt to reassure her son.
“Kopa please I was shocked a little too, but think how great it is going to be, we have been friends since we were cubs,” Aketch said.
“I cannot…………..you should have discussed this with me,” Kopa replied gasping for breath.
“Kopa you are a prince. Now this might be a surprise however that does not excuse how you have just treated your future betrothed. An announcement will be made tonight, both of you will appear at the edge of Pride Rock. Kopa you will not see Zuri from this moment onwards,” Simba said looking at his son.
“Kopa this is a wonderful even for you, a true sign to the entire kingdom that you are an adult. I understand it must feel a little overwhelming. We have chosen Aketch because we know how deep your friendship is, I know you will both be very happy together,” Nala said gently placing a paw on his shoulder.
Looking between his parents, the look of coolness on Ni’s face and the look of joy mingled with bewilderment of Aketch, Kopa felt the entire world close in around him.
Standing next to him Aketch felt her heart ache in sadness as Kopa’s reaction had been the complete opposite of what she had been expecting.
“Kopa, come with me, we have a lot to talk about before tonight’s announcement,” Simba said.
Seeing the stern look on his father’s face Kopa allowed himself to be led away down the cliff path without question. Casting a look at his son a spark of regret entered the king’s heart, perhaps he should have spoken to his son about the betrothal before today. As they walked Simba began to talk to his son about the changes that were coming.
Back at top of the rock Ni, Nala and Aketch stood in silence until the pair were out of earshot. Looking at the adults Aketch broke down into tears.
“Does Kopa not want me as a mate? I thought he would be happy. We have been friends for so long.”
“Oh Aketch you cannot think like that,” Nala said gently. “I was surprised by his reaction too. A betrothal is a very important event. I think Kopa is just feeling a little overwhelmed by it.”
“Nala is right. Kopa clearly wasn’t expecting nor even thought about marriage. The news simply threw him into a blind panic. Once he has calmed down a bit he will be delighted at the prospect.”
“He didn’t look so happy, have I………was I over happy about everything? I love him so much.”
“No Aketch. There is nothing wrong with you. Kopa just needs a little time. Perhaps if we had talked you both about it separately before today he would have reacted better.”
As the sun set over the horizon the entire kingdom at the base of Pride Rock. As Simba made the announcement a great cheer went up from all those assembled. Side by side Kopa and Aketch were presented so the subjects could see the prince and the lioness who would be his queen.
“In five days’ time the betrothal ceremony will take place. Queen Nala and I invite all of our subjects to come to bear witness to this great event,” Simba said.
At this another great cheer erupted from the crowd. Looking down at the crowd Aketch reward them with a brilliant smile much to their delight. Standing next to her Kopa just stared straight ahead. Outside he appeared the very image of a confident prince, inside he was struggling with a jumble of emotions. He could feel the weight of expectations on his shoulders along a new sense of sudden responsibility and pressure. For the first time in his life Kopa felt utter panic and fear and for the first time he felt utterly alone. ____________________________________________________________________
Over the next four days the kingdom was gripped by excitement at the coming ceremony. Offers of help with the coming ceremony came from all corners of the kingdom. To the amusement and delight of Ni, Nala and Simba the subjects of the kingdom had decided to turn the coming ceremony into a celebration. Everywhere the lions went they were cheered, Aketch received words of comfort and praise from each animal she met. Caught up in the plans she forgot her initial fears about Kopa’s reaction.
For Kopa the days seem to pass in a blur of lecture by his parents and Zazu about how his life would change and what kind of behaviour would be expected from him. As the blind panic wore off the reality of the upcoming situation began to hit home causing him some sleepless nights. Out in the kingdom Kopa was treated in a more respectful way those around him. Everywhere he went worlds of support and congratulations came his way. As the day of the ceremony grew closer his nerves began to increase.
After Simba and Zazu had given him another lesson on how to be a good fiancé from Kopa felt the world close in around him. The satisfied, proud and happy smiles on the adult’s faces only added to his feelings of panic. As Zazu began to speak Kopa took to his paws, running out of the cave in which they were without a backward glance, leaving Zazu and Simba in stunned silence.
“Oh dear Sire that did not end as we expected. I fear the young prince may not be as delighted as we hoped,” Zazu said with concern.
“I feared this might happen. I thought Kopa was just a bit nervous but he seemed calm over the past couple of days,” Simba sighed sadly.
Out in the savannah Kopa ran and ran totally blinded by emotions and oblivious to all around him. Stopping at last in exhaustion Kopa was shocked to find himself on the plateau above the Gorge. In a swift bound Kopa walked down the cliffs, throwing himself down on a section of rock overlooking the place Mufasa died.
“What am I doing? Tomorrow I’ll be betrothed to Aketch. Our parents think we will be happy and fall in love because we have been friends for years. They never even asked us what we thought. I like Aketch as my friend. I’m not in love with her. The thought of marrying her scare me witless. Now way am I ready for a betrothal ceremony let alone a marriage. Sure heirs are betrothed as cubs but a formal ceremony never takes places until they are older as the ceremony signals that both are together as a couple.
Yeh they were annoyed about me and Zuri but they knew we were only having a bit of fun. If they had just backed off it would have ended after a couple of months. We knew they hated it so we went out more to annoy them. Just because Dad never dated didn’t mean he had to be so strict with me.
What is with my parents and being so controlling? They expect me to be the perfect heir all the time. Sure if I make mistakes they never get to mad, they are fairly understanding. I just wish they’d give me time to relax a little.
Springing this betrothal thing. They expected me to be really happy about it, Aketch expected me to be happy. The looks on their faces when I froze. Sure Mum can convince Aketch it’s all just nerves and that things will change once the ceremony happens. Trouble is I’m not they will change. I don’t love her. Duty demands that I marry her. Could I marry someone I don’t love even if that person is a close friend? What makes this worse is that Aketch loves me. She is expecting me to lover her in return just as a prince from my Grandma Sarafina’s stories would.
The last thing I want is to hurt her. Perhaps it would be better if I didn’t go through with the ceremony. My parents would kill me. No breaking it off wouldn’t work, that would only cause more pain.”
“KOPA!”
The sound of his named begin called caused the young lion to practically jump out of his skin. Turning around Kopa found Imoo standing behind him, a look of worry and concern on his face. Taking in the utter despair on Kopa’s face Imoo flopped down next to him.
“I thought I might find you here. Simba and Zazu told me you ran off. Simba is has this crazy idea you might be nervous out about tomorrow. Me, I think you are freaking out so much you are considering a moonlight flit,” Imoo said sarcastically. “Trust me a moonlight flit seems like a very good idea from where I am sitting.”
“For all their planning the adults didn’t think to ask you how you were feeling. Talk to me Kopa, whatever is going on? I know you like Aketch as a friend and I suspect you wouldn’t be freaking out if you loved her.”
“When did you get so insightful? You are too damn intelligent for your own good. You’re right though, I only care for her as friend yet she is in love with me. My parents say I will grow to love her. They say their arranged worked out so will mine. I know it is custom for heirs to have arranged marriages.”
“That doesn’t mean it will always work out. Kopa only you can decide what you are going to do. If you a want to run I’ll lend a paw, you just have to be sure.”
“That sounds fantasy Imoo. As scared as I am the thought of letting my parents down, letting the kingdom down is more than my fears about tomorrow,” Kopa sighed.
“Well I couldn’t do it, I just hope Aketch realizes how great a lion she is getting.”
“Imoo you don’t see things as I do. I have a duty to this kingdom, as heir I always knew a betrothal would come one day. Marrying Aketch wouldn’t be so terrible would it? At least we can be friends, if she loves me and I can always care for her as friend. It could be a lot worse,” Kopa chuckled softly.
“It could be a lot worse. Look Kopa after tomorrow your relationship with Aketch will change for good. No more you, me Aketch, Dumisa, Sudi and Akil having fun together all day. You have to be ready for that. She is half expecting you to fall in love with her. If you want this then I can respect that,” Imoo said looking at Kopa straight in the eyes.
“I can’t walk away from this, as scared as I am that just isn’t an option.”
As the sun set across the savannah Kopa and Imoo looked out across the Gorge. In the evening air both lions felt a sense of the changes to come. As many heirs before him Kopa had chosen the path of duty, willingly making a sacrifice for his kingdom.
_____________________________________________________________________
At dawn the following morning the subjects of the Pridelands gathered at the base of Pride Rock. High above them Rafiki stood in front of Kopa and Aketch who stood side by side. On the surrounding rocks the lions watched with bated breath, Ni, Simba and Nala standing just behind the young couple. In the mornings light Rafiki performed the ceremony, binding the pair as intended mates. In front of the assembled crowd Aketch and Kopa were told the importance of the steps and the responsibilities. As the ceremony drew to a close Rafiki recited the betrothal vows.
“On this day I Aketch or I Kopa proclaim in front of all those assemble my intent to marry Kopa or Aketch. I will honour and respect my intended. Until the times for us to marry I will seek no other. I will do all within my power to support my intended in all that he/ she undertakes. Should any fault be found by either side I understand our agreement may end. Kopa and Aketch both do both of you swear to these vows?”
“I swear,” Aketch replied.
“I swear,” Kopa replied.
“Kopa as heir there is more to which you must swear. Repeat after me. I Kopa present Aketch to my subjects as my future queen.”
“I Kopa present Aketch to my subject as my future queen,” Kopa said.
“With the blessing of the Great Kings of the past I Rafiki proclaim Kopa and Aketch to be betrothed within the laws and customs of this kingdom!”
At his words Simba let out a might roar which was taken up by the entire pride. The assembled subjects took the roar as a might cheer to which all added their own voices. The joy Aketch felt was written on her face, her fairy-tale was on the first step to coming true. Standing next to her Kopa had forced himself to smile, there were worst things in life than marrying your friend. The future was secure.
Refuge
A few days after Kopa and Aketch’s ceremony found found Kopa, Imoo and Kiara were patrolling by the river. Standing on the banks of the mighty river the three lions looked out across the water, all around them birds and animals drank and bathed. Lifting a paw Imoo caught a strange scent on the wind. Looking into a shallow part of the river he saw a leopard the same age as him clinging onto a large log. Even at that distance Imoo could see the creature was badly hurt. As if seeing his gaze the leopard looked up. With an effort the leopard slipped from the log, falling into the water with a great splash. Instantly the lions ran into the river to help their fellow cat.
“Where am I?” the leopard croaked as Imoo placed him on Kopa’s back.
Together both lions half dragged half carried the leopard to the riverbank, gently laying him down on the sand. Looking at the lions the leopard coughed as he fought to regain his breath.
“Safe within the Pridelands, I am Kopa son of King Simba. The guy on your left is my cousin Imoo and the little female is my sister Kiara,” Kopa said laying down next to him.
“Thank the Ancestors I have arrived, please I need your help,” the leopard said weakly.
“We need your name first.”
“Bakari. I must speak to Simba, I,” Bakari stammered falling into a coughing fit.
“You need medicine,” Imoo cut in, running his eyes over Bakari's emaciated body. “If you let us Kopa and I can carry you between us.”
“Relax Bakari you're safe,” Kopa replied catching sight of Akil above them. “Akil we need your help!”
“What can I do Kopa?” Akil aked fluttering down onto Imoo's shoulder.
“Go to Rafiki, tell him we have a badly injured leopard, and have him meet us at home as soon as he can.”
“Right away Kopa,” Akil replied taking to the air while Imoo and Kopa watched.
Turning their attention back to Bakari Kiara, Kopa and Imoo slowly began to make their way home. Their progress was swifter than expected because Bakari was underweight for a leopard of his age. Free from the burden Kiara ran ahead filled with genuine concern for the leopard.
Arriving home at last the group found Rafiki waiting for them with Akil and Simba. On the direction of Rafiki, Bakari was taken to a small cave where he was placed on a hastily constructed bed of grass and leaves. Bending over Bakari, Rafiki opened his medicine shells.
“These wounds are deep, inflicted by lion claws and teeth, it will take time for them to heal. Three times in each day they will need clean bindings, this task I will undertake. He has a story to tell. I believe he will want to speak to you Simba when he awakens. He must not over exert himself,” Rafiki said eventually.
“We will make sure he does as you request,” Kopa replied.
As Rafiki took his leave, Imoo, Kopa, Akil, Kiara and Simba turned their attention to the now sleeping Bakari. Exhaustion had caught up with the young leopard, during Rafiki's treatment he had drifted in and out of consciousness before finally succumbing to the sleep. With the words of Rafiki ringing in their ears the lions looked down at him with sadness.
For the next three days Bakari drifted in and out of consciousness as fever ravaged his weakened body. His wounds burned in pain while nightmares and memories raged through his mind. Bakari's calls kept the lions awake, each one sending a spike on pain into their hearts. From his cries it seemed he had suffered much, in his sleep he called out for his parents, begging unnamed adversaries to spare their lives. Watching the leopard sleep Simba felt a spike of fear in his heart. Unknown to the pride the leopard was familiar to him, baring more than a passing resemblance to a leopard he had known as a cub.
Six days after arriving in the Pride Lands Bakari was finally well enough to tell the pride his story. Though still weak his wounds had healed considerably. Laying under the shade of a large tree at sunset Nala, Timon, Pumba, Simba, Kopa, Aketch and Imoo listened to his story.
“I was born in the jungle, my father is King Tafari of Osumare (African meaning rainbow). All the leopards lived together in tress close to a river. We all had dens in amongst the foliage, there were lots of tree and bush made thickets. It was a beautiful paradise.
One night we were attacked by a pride of lions led by strong females. We had no warning, they overwhelmed us. I can barely remember what happened. We tried to fight. My father forced me to run. He told me to go the Pride Lands to find King Simba. I don’t understand why he want me to come here thought,” Bakari explain in a voice filled with pain.
“I do,” Simba replied, a tear running down his cheek. “Your father and I are old friends. He sent you here because he knew I would help you.”
“Tafari, it’s been years since I've thought of him!” Pumba said in amazement.
“You're not the only one Pumba, the amount of time we spent chasing those two through the jungle!” Timon groaned rolling his eyes. “Up trees, down trees, through hidden caves behind waterfalls, tangling with pythons six foot long, it was one scrape after another!”
“I doubt any of us will forget that incident with the snake, the least said on that subject the better!” Pumba replied shooting a glare at Simba.
“Hey that was a long time ago, besides we didn't plan on encountering it,” Simba replied, a sheepish look on his face. “Were there any males in this pride?”
“About three. I didn't see much, I barely escaped with my life,” Bakari replied dissolving into tears.
“Bakari you don't have to say any more,”Nala said, gently placing a paw on his shoulder.
“You did the right thing coming here. Bakari I swear to do all that I can to help you reclaim your kingdom. Rest, heal and plan your return in safety,” Simba said.
“We will let the entire kingdom know of our decree,” Nala said smiling gently.
“Thank you, all of you. I am grateful for the help you have promised,” Bakari said looking around the group.
One by one the assembled animals placed a paw on the shoulder of the young leopard. Bakari had the safety that he so desperately needed. As Simba watched Kopa bend over to speak to the leopard his memory drifted back to a day years before.
Before Simba had left the jungle he had gone to speak to Tafari and Tafari’s female cousin Leena. Tafari and Leena had been sad to see Simba leave yet had known it was Simba’s destiny. For Leena the pain was greater as she and Simba had once been in love. For one brief summer Leena and Simba had allowed themselves to be together in the jungle paradise. The teenagers were so much in love the leopards had accepted it. After a time reality had set in bringing an end to their romance. Shortly before Nala’s arrival in the jungle Leena had married a leopard of her parents choosing and Tafari had ascended to the throne on his mother’s death. On the night Simba left the jungle he had promised to help the leopards if they were ever in need of it. A promise that was remembered at a time of crisis when all hope seemed lost.
Slowly days passed. With rest, medicine, food and plenty of talking Baraki’s physical and emotional wounds healed. Kopa and Imoo spend a lot of time with their new friend, exploring the kingdom and sharing adventures. With his natural agility Bakari easily climbed the many trees, giving the lions quite a fright when he leapt down.
As the days passed Kiara slowly developed a crush on him. With his natural charm, handsome features and the fact he always treated her as an equal the young princess fell head over paws. Kiara often spent time with Bakari when Kopa and Imoo were occupied with royal duties. One afternoon while Kiara and Bakari were exploring the river he showed her how to cross a river by climbing over the trees. From the far side of the river Kopa watched the pair a lead weight descended into Kopa's stomach as he realized his sister's feelings for Bakari. That night while the pride slept Kopa took Bakari to the top of Pride Rock.
“Bakari, Kiara has a crush on you,” Kopa said facing his friend.
“Kiara is a wonderful cub, I enjoy spending time with her,” Bakari replied smiling.
“Kiara is a sweet cub but naïve. She may like you but her heart is that of a cub. I won’t forgive you if you hurt her.”
“You're a good brother Kopa. I care for Kiara as family nothing more.”
“I'm glad we understand each other,” Kopa replied breathing a sigh of relief.
“I would be a cruel creature to take advantage of the crush of a cub,” Bakari replied.
Training of kings
Two months had passed since Bakari had arrived in the Pride Lands. One bright morning Simba and his friend held council at the very top of Pride Rock. Bakari spoke first, describing his home in detail before stopping short.
“When I arrived I wasn’t quite honest with you about how I escaped. The truth was my Father did tell me to come here. What I didn't tell you is that I spend five days in captivity.”
“How then did you escape?” Nala asked breaking the stunned silence.
“I was helped by a lioness the same age as me.”
“Why would she help you?” Simba asked, a glimmer of suspicion in his eyes.
“She had white fur with purple eyes. I didn't get to find out much about her, she told me is that she was a virtual outcast and the male leader was her father. In a way she was as much a prisoner as I was.”
“Bakari you should have been honest with us from the start,” Nala said.
“Nala is right, we would have understood the circumstances, we all know how badly a white lion can be treated,” Simba replied bitterly.
“That poor girl she must have a terrible life,” Nala replied, her voice laced with sadness.
“I have to return. Whether my parents or my sister live or not I have to reclaim what is mine.”
“I will help you,” Kopa said standing up. “I will go with you to fight.”
“So will I, the three of us together stand a better chance than you alone,” Imoo said proudly.
Standing proudly together the three youngsters looked an impressive sight as fire burned brightly in their eyes. Looking at their son Simba and Nala felt their hearts swell with pride at his genuine desire to help another. In that moment they saw the young adult he had become. With a graceful nod of their heads Simba and Nala gave Kopa their blessing. Next to them Aketch sat in silence as the news sank in. A thousand thoughts swirled through her head, happiness and understanding mingled with fear for her friends. Feeling Imoo's eyes on her the young lioness spoke up.
“Kopa as your fiancé I can understand why you want to help Bakari. I’m just not sure you should personally go, as heir.”
“Aketch you don’t have to worry about me, I’m a good fight I’ll be back before you know it,” Kopa replied with a confident grin.
“What the three of you plan shows the strength of friendship,” Simba said breaking the silence. “I speak for all when I saw how proud I am of your planned course of action, we will provide any help you require.”
_____________________________________________________________________
The decision of the youngsters to help Bakari was kept a closely guarded secret within the pride. This need had been drummed into the heads of Nassor and Kiara. In the hours between dusk and dawn Bakari, Kopa and Imoo trained hard, working on their fighting skills, tracking and stealth. Imoo came into his own, using all the training he had been given by his parents. While his methods were tough yet effective, often the trio would collapse from exhaustion when they arrived home.
At first Aketch helped with the training along with Sudi, Akil and Dumisa as each animal had their own unique skills. In a short space of time the Elephants Graveyard became a major training ground with many of the wild dogs playing the part of adversaries. With his small form Sudi was often chased by the cats or took on the role of spy when Imoo was teaching about how to gather information. With all the friends working together the days of their cub hood seemed to return. Though all still tried to have fun ever increasing adult responsibilities had restricted them in recent months.
As the days turned to weeks the combined pressure of training and the simple fact that Kopa would be leaving began to put a strain Kopa and Aketch’s relationship. Though betrothed Kopa was still treating her as a friend even when the pair went on formal dates. Torn between caring for Kopa as a friend and her love for him Aketch began to feel anger at his treatment of her.
Arriving home from a hard night of training Kopa, Imoo and Bakari were met by Aketch who had a less than happy look on her face.
“So what time do you call this Kopa?”
“Just before sunrise, what have I done?” Kopa asked innocently.
“We were supposed to be going on a date,” Aketch snapped angrily. “I guess you just forgot.”
“Awe Aketch I'm sorry, we had an important piece of training to finish. We can go out tomorrow if you want to.”
“Putting all this training before the need of you fiancé and breaking a promise, I never thought I'd see it.”
“Aketch cool it, the training is important, I said I'm sorry!”
“Aketch our training is important, Simba and Nala understand that, I suggest,” Bakari began.
“Stay out of this leopard you are the cause of this. If you had never come begging for help then……”
“AKETCH THAT IS UNFAIR!” Kopa roared with rage. “I am a Prince, bound by duty to help those in need.”
“Kopa,” Aketch began her eyes burning with fury.
Taking a look between the pair Imoo and Bakari took to their paws, running away as fast as they could from the fighting. Facing each other alone Kopa and Aketch felt the tension cracking.
“Kope you shouldn’t go with them, putting Bakari before the needs of your own kingdom, what happens if you get killed?”
“I have to! A promise was made by my Father. When this kingdom need help the most my father returned. I can’t explain it, helping Bakari is giving back for the recovery of this land,” Kopa replied angrily. “I expected you to understand.”
“I am trying to Kopa but we never spend enough time together just the two of us. I know we didn’t expect to be betrothed but you could at least make an effort to treat me in the way a prince should treat his girl!” Aketch cried, tears of anger and pain running down her face
“What happened to us Aketch?” Kopa whispered softly. “We used to be the best of friend. Me, you, Imoo, Akil, Sudi and Dumisa, as cubs we had so much fun. Ever since the ceremony things have been bad between us. Why did something so good turn into this?”
As Kopa’s word began to sink in Kopa and Aketch looked at one another, with a mixture of sadness and regret shining in their eyes. Tears ran their cheeks as both began to understand what had gone wrong. In their minds both remembered the fun times as cubs, the mischief as teenagers, all memories filled with joy. Then they saw their recent past, arguments and tension as they tried to adjust to their new relationship. Tear fell from their eyes as each saw the part their actions had played, in their hearts both deeply regretting what had happened.
“Oh Kopa what have we been doing to each other? It all fell apart on the day of ceremony. Our parents expect us to fall in love like yours did. I love you but I don’t want to lose my friend either.”
“It happened to soon Aketch. I know I haven’t acted the best. This thing. I’ve not been able to handle it. Can we just go back to being friends?”
“I like friends,” Aketch replied smiling for the first time.
Standing together Kopa and Aketch felt the tension evaporate into the morning sunlight. That afternoon as they hunted together the subjects saw two best friends on a hunting trip.

A week later Kopa, Imoo and Bakari stood together in front of the pride and their friends in the cave at Pride Rock.
“The time has come for me to return home. Tomorrow I will leave this kingdom,” Bakari said, his voice brimming with confidence.
“Your time has come Bakari, I believe the three of you together will be successful, go with our blessings,” Simba said nodding gracefully.
Standing up Kopa let out a mighty roar, one by one the pride joined in, proclaiming their strength for the world to heal. In the midst of the pride Kiara felt a wash of sadness. As the gathering broke up Kiara walked over to the young leopard.
“Bakari can we go for a walk?”
“Of course Kiara, where would you like to go?” Bakari asked kindly.
“Over to the waterhole would be nice, if it’s not too far?”
“The waterhole is fine, besides it is only mid-afternoon.”
“Ok, great.”
With a nod to Nala and Kopa the pair set off side by side through the rich grass. For a while they walked in silence, happy to simply enjoy the day and each other’s company. Nearing the waterhole they reached a small pool of water surrounded by flowers partially shaded by a large tree. Stopping among the flowers Kiara looked directly at Bakari, her eyes filled with innocence.
“I love you,” Kiara whispered.
“I care for you too Kiara,” Bakari said gently. “I’m not going to tell you you’re feelings are silly or that you are too young as you know your own mind.”
“I love you a lot, since you came here, I know I’m young….”
“Kiara how do you love me?”
“You mean everything too me.”
“Do you love your parents, Kopa and your cousin Imoo, would you help them if they needed it? Would you do anything for me?”
“I love them, I’d do anything, whatever it took to help them, even if it mean my giving life. I would do anything for you Bakari, if I was old enough I’d come with you to the jungle.”
“If I asked would you leave your family, leave your home never to return, would you live a life apart with me?”
“Live away. Too never come back, to leave forever……I’m not sure if I could…..”Kiara replied, her eyes filling with pain and confusion as the reality of Bakari’s question began to hit home.
“Think about how your love feels for your family then think about your love for me, tell me how it feels….” Bakari asked gently.
Time seemed to slow down as Kiara looked deep into her heart, her love for her family and her love for Bakari. Unfamiliar feelings passed over the young princess, love mixed duty, confusion mixed with clarity. For the first time Kiara began to see her true self and understand her own feelings.
“It feels the same, I love you like I do my family,” Kiara said softly, looking up at Bakari with eyes filled with affection.
“I feel the same way about you Kiara, the past few months when I’ve been with you, it’s been like being with the little sister I never had,” Bakari replied placing a paw on her shoulder.
“I’d be happy to be your little sister, thank you for not treating me like a cub or telling me I’m being silly.”
“I would never do that Kiara, you have as much right to love as the next lion, love takes no account of age. One day you will find your true love who will return your love in return, when you do you will your feelings now will seem small in comparison.”
“How will I know my true love?”
“When you meet a lion for who you would sacrifice everything, for who you would be willing to live a life apart far away from the Pridelands if needs be. In return that lion will be willing to sacrifice everything for you. When you do Kiara send me a message, I would like know who earned your heart,” Bakari replied, a brilliant light shining in his eyes and words filled with warmth.
In the circle of flowers Kiara and Bakari smiled at each other their hearts uniting in the love of family, brother and sister in love if not blood.

At dawn the following day Kopa, Imoo, Bakari and all their friends and family gathered together at the bottom of Pride Rock. Sadness mingled with fierce pride was written across the faces of Simba and Nala, their hearts breaking at the thought of letting their son go.
“Do what you must. Remember not all participants are willing, fear of death can force creatures to do things against their will. I am proud of you Kopa,” Simba whispered embracing his son.
“Stay safe my heart, we love you,” Nala whispered tears in her eyes.
“Be careful Kopa, please come back some day,” Kiara pleaded as Kopa placed a paw around her.
“I promise Kiara I will see you again,” Kopa replied looking at his sister. “I will return home, I swear, no matter how long it takes I will come home.”
“Kopa, I…..” Aketch whispered, tears in her eyes. “I love you, please be safe and come home to me. I couldn’t bear to lose you.”
“You won’t lose my Aketch,” Kopa whispered.
“When you come back both of you will be married,” Simba said softly. “I have never been prouder. When the fighting is over, do me one favour.”
“Anything Dad,”
“Take some time to explore.”
“I will Dad,” Kopa replied nuzzling his father.
Watching his family Imoo turned away without speaking, shards of guilt and darkness in his eyes. Despite the passage of time he had to overcome the shadow of his birth, the fact he was Scar’s son laid heavily on his heart. A darkness and a legacy that he felt at time would consume him. Walking forward Rafiki laid a blessing on them.
“Go with the blessing of this land. Wherever this journey may lead you let our prayers be guide your and always remember your pride.”
With the wind blowing through their fur Kopa, Imoo and Bakari bounded away into the morning light. Reaching the border they stood on a rocky edge from which they could see the entire kingdom. Unknown to them this was the very same place that Simba had stood years previously. Standing there Kopa felt a pain in his chest. With a final look at his homeland Kopa turned away, in an easy bound the three friends crossed the border.
Gathering Storm
Two weeks had passed since Kopa, Imoo and Bakari had left the Pridelands. After travelling through the harsh desert they now stood next to small pool of water under a tree on the border of the desert and jungle. After heat of the desert the water and shade was welcome. Guided by Bakari they walked to a small waterfall that caused Kopa and Imoo to gasp in shock. To their surprise Bakari guided them along a narrow strip of rock around the side of the cliff. Walking under the water they closed their eyes, when they opened them they found themselves facing a small cave network with three different chambers.
“We can hide here. I don’t think the lions will know about this place as the path is fairly well camouflaged.”
“That’s good to know. We need a few days to recover our strength,” Imoo said laying down.
“That is my plan. This area is outside my kingdom in a neutral area, even if the lions met us they could not attack,” Bakari replied.
“We have a plan for now. Well I’m not sure about you guys but I am getting some sleep,” Kopa said yawning.
“Sleep is what we all need, relax Imoo, we will be safe here,” Bakari replied laying down next to him.
In the dim light of the cave a look of uncertainty passed over the young lion’s face, his parents training ringing his ears. As the afternoon head increased the cats fell into a deep sleep their weary bodies delighting in the sleep.
In the silence of the jungle night Kopa, Imoo and Bakari stepped out of their cave. Well rested they were eager to hunt, with Bakari’s guidance they quickly found the perfect prey. As they ate they began to plan how they would go about taking back the kingdom.
“Bakari you can’t be seen near your home, too much is at stake,” Imoo said. “I was taught battle tactics, in particular the steps required when usurping a kingdom. Kill all male heirs without question.”
“I know but I can’t sit by while you risk your lives,” Bakari replied seriously.
“We are not asking you too. Bakari your knowledge will help us. We will all act at night and we act together,” Imoo replied facing his friends.
“Sounds like we have our chief tactician,,” Kopa replied with relief. “Looks like Scar’s training is useful after all.”
“I agree, Imoo we leave the chief planning to you,” Bakari replied proudly.
“Then I suggested we start building knowledge of what happened since you left, we have to know the lion’s power structures.”
“My family……..I have to know what happened to them.”
“We’ll find out Bakari, I promise,” Kopa said.
“That is one of the first things we find out,” Imoo replied.
Keeping to the kingdom’s edge at night Imoo, Kopa and Bakari slowly began to gather the information they needed, information that was surprisingly easy to come by. Many leopards were hiding deep in the mountains outside the kingdom borders and were seen as rebels by the lions. The rebels were receiving help from within the kingdom and covertly from the neighbouring kingdoms. With his knowledge of the land Bakari had a good idea of where they might be hiding, allowing them to seek out the rebel camp within days of arriving in the jungle.
Eight days after their arrival in the jungle Bakari, Imoo and Kopa stood in the mountains looking down they could see the land spread out below them. Above them black storm clouds gathered. As the air had thinned the going had become difficult. They had travelled through the heart of the jungle, climbing over tress, through vines, jumping over streams that wound their way through the land. Traveling by night they had often heard the faint roars of the lions on the breeze, often hearing the calls of leopards, elephants and many species of birds.
Hearing a faint rustling in the tress Bakari’s eyes suddenly shot up a large tree under which they were stood. Handing from the branches was a very long python whose tongue was flicking.
“Bakari you’re alive!” the python hissed with delight.
“It is good to see you Mosi (African name meaning first born),” Bakari replied.
“Lions are not foolish enough to attack a snake, besides escaping is a talent of mine. It appears to be a talent of yours too.”
“Where are my manners? Imoo, Kopa meet the famous Mosi. Mosi this is Imoo and Kopa, the latter is the son of my Father’s old friend Simba. I have returned to reclaim my kingdom.”
“We have a lot to talk about. I am on my way to meet the rebels, I will lead you to them.”
“You’ve seen them!” Bakari said in shock.
“Of courseee, it was I who ssuggessted their hiding place. I am their sspy.”
In a flash Mosi dropped to the ground, all seven feet of him land on the ground with a soft thud. Slithering next to the cats Mosi related how he had helped the leopards escape. With a sudden clap of thunder the storm broke, raining falling down in a heavy sheet that quickly soaked their fur.
After a while negotiating obscure paths the group arrived at a large clearing, in the clearing was a large opening cut into the rock. To one side of the rock a small streamed poured down into a pool. Looking into the cave they were met by a pair of glowing eyes, into the light stepped a male leopard, his greying fur betraying his age while cuts were scattered across his body. For a moment he just stared at them while eight other leopards joined him.
“BAKARI, THANK THE ANCESTROS” the male called running forward.
“Great Uncle Kofi! (African name means born on Friday)” Bakari replied as the two nuzzled.
“I knew in my heart you lived, your mother knew in her heart,” Kofi replied as one by one the other leopards gathered around.
“The escape attempt worked.”
“We have much to tell, come into the cave.”
Walking into the cave Bakari introduced Imoo and Kopa to the leopards, telling of his time in Simba’s kingdom. Introductions were made of the seven other leopard, two older males Reuben and Anan had been close friends and advisers of Tafari. A young male and female a little older then Bakari had been simple clan members. Another male who had been a scout and a female who was a friend of Bakari’s. The final member of the group was Kofi’s daughter Leena (African name meaning softness), the leopardess once loved by Simba.
“I knew you be safe once Bakari, I knew Simba would keep his promise,” Leena said fondly.
“My Father said he was honoured to be of help,” Kopa said stepping forward.
“So I finally have to opportunity to meet you Kopa, your father’s image, just has he described.”
“Wait what do you mean by that, did you know about me?” Kopa asked in surprise.
“I do,” Leena replied chucking at his surprise. “After your father took back his kingdom he used a bird to send Tafari a message. When you were born he sent one to tell us.”
“Leena what happened to………..” Bakari asked hesitantly.
“You wish to hear about your family, Bakari the truth will hurt.”
“I need to know.”
With a heavy heart Leena and Kofi spoke of the events following Tafari’s death and Bakari’s escape. Though the lions were led by females but male called Malka had very high status within the pride. In an attempt to strengthen the pride’s hold on the kingdom, the son of the leading female, a lioness name Fumbe (African meaning slave) had married Bakari’s twin sister. Fumbe’s son Dwanh (African meaning to run) shared his mother cruelty yet he was kind and gentle to Bakari’s sister Tameka (African meaning a twin). Despite the circumstances Dwanh and Tameka appeared to the outside world to have some form of be happiness. As she gave little trouble Tameka was relatively free to move about the kingdom.
The same freedom was not given to the majority of the leopards who were kept under close watch. Rumours were abound that the lions planned to arrange marriages between young lions and leopards. Fumbe had placed strict laws on the movement of subjects, free speech was banned and anyone who spoke out about the lions rule was severely punished. Yet there was hope, a small minority of the lions of Bakari’s age disagreed with the actions of their pride and secretly aided the leopards.
Listening the truth of the situation Bakari felt his chest tighten in pain at the fates of his mother and sister. The truth was what he had been expecting yet hearing had been more painful than he had imagined. Tameka’s fate was especially hard bear. Gasping for breath Bakari turned to his friends with tears in his eyes. One by one Kopa and Imoo placed a paw on his shoulder while each of the leopards placed paws on the lions. United by grief, pain and a desire to comfort the outcast unite in solidarity.
Suddenly a noise outside broke the spell. Leaving his friends Imoo went to investigate. Stepping out into the rain Imoo was met by a pair of shining lavender eyes. Through the downpour Imoo gazed at a single white lioness. Time seemed to stop. Green eyes met lavender. Looking at her Imoo saw a face filled with pain that bordered on despair. Imoo felt his heart reach out to her without needing to ask he guessed her identity. Looking at him the lioness cocked her head to one side in confusion. Then her behaviour changed as Bakari walked out to join Imoo.
“Kamaria (African name meaning moon).”
“Bakari you have come back,” Kamarai replied softly.
“I had help. This lion is a friend of mine, Imoo. He and another lion Kopa have come to help me. Come inside.”
“The rain is heavy, it is nice to meet you Imoo.”
Stepping into the cave Kamaria was greeted fondly by the leopards as they had been expecting to see her that day. For a while she listened as Kopa and Bakari spoke of the Pridelands, a strange look crossing her face at the mention of Simba and Nala. Speaking at last Kamari hesitated at first, unsure how to tell phrase her next words and fearing their repercussions.
“I know you may not believe me but I do not agree with the actions of my pride.”
“Hold on now before we go any further let’s have your identity, whose daughter are you and why did you flinch at the mention of Simba?” Imoo asked jumping in.
“You are cynical, someone taught you well. I am Malka’s daughter, I am an outcast who has been beaten and bullied her entire life for her colouring. I am outcast yet also prized as a pawn to be married of to make alliances.”
“I guess we can understand that,” Imoo replied scrutinizing her. “Now Simba.”
“I have heard his name and that of your kingdom before. My father told me he lived in the Pridelands until a king called Scar forced him and his friends Togo and Chumvi out. He said Scar became king when the old king Mufasa died.”
“Then your father is my Father’s old friend,” Kopa said jumping in. “I am Simba’s son.”
“I am Scar’s son,” Imoo replied, swiftly relaying the events of Scar’s demise.
“Then we all victims of events before our births.”
“What do you want in return? These leopards might be naïve enough to think you are doing this just because you don’t agree with your pride. I don’t, every lion has their price, what is yours?” Imoo asked scrutinizing her.
“You’re right Imoo I do have a price,” Karamria replied a sly smile on her face. “I want freedom and the right to decide my own destiny.”
“I can give you that Kamaria,” Bakari said standing up. “If you help me take back my kingdom I swear you will have your freedom.”
“Thank you Bakari.”
“Then we are all of agreement,” Kofi said facing the group. “We need to act soon for I fear the lion’s actions.”
_____________________________________________________________________
Over the next few weeks the rebels planned their assault. Kopa and Bakari regularly slipped over the border at night to talk to watch and for Kopa to talk to the leopards.
Walking back from a scouting trip one night Kopa stopped in his tracks near a waterfall as the scent of a leopard and blood drifted towards him. Walking up to the waterfall he stepped onto the rocks surrounding it, the rocks snaking up either side to form a path. On the opposite side he knew there was a small cave that was obscured by water and foliage. Stepping into the water Kopa’s eyes gazed through the mist. A pair of golden eyes filled with fear met his. The midst cleared to reveal a leopardess the same age as him crouching on the opposite bank. The female was thin, a multitude of cuts crossed her body, blood caked her fur and her eyes showed utter fear. As Kopa approached she hissed.
“Please, you don’t need to be scared, I’m not going to hurt,” Kopa said gently.
“LIES! I am not a fool,” she hissed.
“I am not trying to trick you. I am a friend of Bakari.”
“Not trying to trick me yet to mention that name. Well lion I am in no state to fight, kill me if that is your order, just make it quick.”
“I am not a member of the pride who took your kingdom. What can I say that will prove to you….? My name is Kopa, son of King Simba and Queen Nala and heir to the Pridelands.”
Hearing the names the female’s expression changed from fear and hatred to that of first disbelief then of awe. Gingerly she climbed to her paws, her eyes searching Kopa’s face of any hint of deceit. Finding none she walked into the water.
“You’re Simba’s son. The lion who my parents and Uncle Tafari told me about. How did you?”
“Bakari arrived in my kingdom two months ago. We took care of him, I and my cousin Imoo are here to help him retake his kingdom.”
“I knew Bakari was alive,” the leopard replied smiling. “I am sorry for any insult.”
“I understand, you have been hurt and feared for your life. I will protect you. I can take you to Bakari and the other rebels.”
“Thank you Prince Kopa, they are what I have been seeking.”
“I thought they might be. Could you tell me your name?” Kopa asked.
“Enitan, it is a pleasure to meet you,” Enitan replied walking over to him.
Smiling at each other the pair slowly began to walk away from the waterfall towards the rebel’s hideout. As they went Enitan asked Kopa about his home while telling him more about her life growing up. As the daughter of Leena she was a member of the royal family and princess in her own right. Mindful of her injuries Kopa avoid the recent past time and kept their pace while constantly being alert for danger.
Arriving at the cave the pair found the rebels laid outside, some on the ground while others including Bakari lounged peacefully in the tress. Seeing the pair emerge from the undergrowth Leena, Kofi and Bakri ran forward, all nuzzling Enitan with delight. “Oh Enitan my darling you’ve escaped,” Leena whispered.
“I had to. They nearly killed me as I escaped,” Enitan replied dissolving into tears.
“None of that matters now, you are alive and safe,” Leena replied nuzzling her.
“I would have died had Kopa not found me when he did.”
“Then he is a hero,” Kofi said proudly.
“Thank you for saving my life Kopa,” Enitan said looking at him.
“It was nothing……I was glad to help,” Kopa replied blushing furiously.
That night the rebels gathered around Enitan as she told them her story and of recent events in the kingdom. Bakari felt rage boil inside of him as he listened to her tell of the lions beating other members of his clan. Listened to her tale Kopa couldn’t help but admire the bravery Enitan had shown. Seeing his gaze Enitan looked over and smile, a slight blush appearing on her cheeks as she did. As the rebels fell asleep that night Kopa and Enitan felt a slight shift in their world view.
Over the coming days Kopa and Enitan developed a close friendship that routinely meant they volunteered to go on patrol together. Running parallel to Kopa and Enitan were Imoo and Kamaria regularly undertook scouting duties together. The pair gradually began to learn more about each other, Imoo’s initial hostility dispersing as he learned about Kamaria’s difficult and tragic upbringing. Kamaria’s story was one of neglect, prosecuted for her looks, forced to fight from an early age yet at times doted on. Malka had openly acknowledged her yet saw her purely as a prize to be married off. Mystery surrounded her mother who had vanished shortly after Kamari had been weaned. Behind her manipulative exterior was a lioness who craved love. Her willingness to defy her pride and help Bakari came from that desire. Hearing her story Imoo felt his heart reach out to her seeing how similar their lives had been.
Over three months had passed since Imoo, Kopa and Bakari had made contact with the rebels. In the rebel’s mountain cave they were gathered listening to Kamaria tell them news from the kingdom. The rebels were in shock. The lion’s cruelty had increased, the slightest criticism of the lions rule was punished harshly. To make matters worse Tameka was pregnant with Dwanh’s cubs. Rumours swirled around the kingdom about the fate of Bakari’s mother.
“The time of waiting is over, we have to attack,” Kofi said facing the group.
“I agree, we have no idea what the lions will do next,” Reuben said.
“We must act soon, I fear what will happen once Tameka’s cub are born,” Leena said softly. “Tameka is the heir, they need her while she carries the cub, once they are born………”
Looking at the group Bakari felt the weight of their expectations. Then a white hot rage coursed through his blood, a fiery determination to defeat the lions rose in his heart. Glancing at Kopa and Imoo he saw their confidence and strength.
“We attack in four days’ time. Mosi could we count in your support?” Bakari said facing his serpent friend.
“Certainly. The snakes in the kingdom are eager to strike. They have a plan. Trust me those lions will be taken care off.”
“Excellent. Kamaria can I count on you?”
“I will do whatever you ask,” Kamaria replied.
“Then we all agreed,” Bakari said looking around at the group, all of whom were nodding in agreement.
Breaking of Oppression
Under the light of a waning moon Bakari and the rebels slipped into the kingdom using the foliage and mud as camouflage. With the snakes help the lions on guard were incapacitated, the snakes sending most into a deep sleep while Mosi hypnotized the highest ranking ones. One hypnotized the lions were able to guide the rebels towards where the royal family were kept. In the foliage they were able to see sleeping leopards in small groups with lions dotted about. The leopards were fewer than the lions. Yet the rebel’s advantage was their knowledge of the kingdom and the skills of the snakes.
Splitting up Bakari, Leena and Reuben headed off with Mosi to find the royal family while Imoo and Kopa attacked the lions who remained on guard. Arriving at the prison glade Bakari, Leena and Reuben sprang from the shadows, taking the guards utterly by surprise. Seeing Bakari alive the royal family leapt to their paws, nuzzling him and Lenna with joy.
“I knew you lived,” Bakari’s mother whispered.
“I’m home to reclaim my kingdom,” Bakari replied nuzzling her.
Racing out of the clearing the leopards found a battle in raging through the trees. Kopa and Imoo’s attack had not been as silent as planned and the alarm had been raised. Led by Malka the lions were fighting fiercely to hold onto the kingdom they had taken. Too the rebel’s horror Fumbe arrived leading a group of lionesses which include Kamaria while at the same time Dwanh attacked from behind. Fumbe and Dwanh’s eyes were filled with arrogant glee at the sight of the apparently cornered rebels.
“Well now you are caught. You should have stayed gone little Bakari,” Fumbe snarled.
“This kingdom belongs to me! I know my subjects can hear me. I am Bakari rightful heir, rise up, help me reclaim our land,” Bakari roared.
“A coward as a king, for months you have hidden,” Fumbe scorned as more leopards arrived.
“Not hidden, I have trained and gathered allies. Once a lion cub called Simba made his home in his kingdom. A prince exiled from his kingdom. Besides me stand Simba’s son Kopa and Imoo their cousin, my allies.”
The words of Bakari sunk deep into the hearts of the leopards. The older one remembering Simba fondly while the younger saw the strength in Kopa, Imoo and Bakari. The lions looked on with scorn at the princes words. Then to the shock of them all, Kamaria walked away from the lions and stood next to Imoo.
“No more will I be a prisoner to those who will oppress me. I will not become my Father,” Kamaria said staring at her family defiantly.
In the blink of an eye the assembled leopards attacked, Kamaria’s speech had been the spark to light the fire of rebellion in their hearts. Led by Dwanh, Fumbe and Malka led the lions attacked. The cries of the battle broke the nights’ peace. Realizing what was happening the subjects of the kingdom rose up to aid the leopards. The lions had ruled all their subjects harshly, never imaging the other subjects would rise up against them.
The fighting raged ferociously. In the midst Bakari fought Dwanh while Imoo faced Fumbe and Kamria fought Malka. Blinded by rage Malka fought to kill his own daughter. Raising his paw Malka aimed a blow at his daughter’s face. In the blink of an eye Imoo jumped in front of her, taking the blow to his left side. Blood dripped from the wound that was in the very same place as his father’s scar. For a moment Malka froze. In that split second Imoo and Kamaria pounced, falling to the ground Malka hit his head, the force of the blow rendering him unconscious.
Suddenly a mighty roar ripped through the air, time seemed to stop as Bakari delivered a fatal blow to Fumbe. All watched as the lioness fell next to the body of Dwanh. The fighting was over. All their leaders dead the lions surrendered, praying for the mercy of the leopard. As the sun rose across the jungle Kofi, Reuben and Anan proclaimed Bakari king of Osumare. The rightful heir had taken his place.
Two days had passed since Bakari had ascended to the throne, after two days of rest the time had come to deal with the remainder of the lion pride. After the battle had ended Bakari had been reunited with Tameka, the meeting was slightly awkward due the recent event.
With Imoo, Kopa and Anan by his side Bakari walked toward the clearing where the lions laid under guard. Seeing them enter the tension rocked, the quartet noticing Kamaria was sat on the very edge of the clearing, as far away from the others as possible. In the middle of the group gathered the cubs, filled with fear they cowered next to their mothers. In the middle Malka looked up at the quartet with arrogance in his eyes.
“Greetings your majesties, to what do we owe the pleasure?” Malka said silkily.
“We have come to discuss your fate,” Bakari said in a voice fill with authority.
“Our deaths you mean.”
“I am not like you Malka. This is my judgment. All who are willing to swear an oath of loyalty to me will be allowed to remain in this kingdom or to leave if they wish. All cubs will be allowed to remain without condition until they reach maturity then they will have to swear an oath of loyalty. Malka you will be exiled on pain of death should you ever return.”
“Conditions, an oath of loyalty, weakness begins your rule,” Malka hissed.
“Be grateful your life has been spared,” Kamaria replied stepping forward. “Allow me to be the first lion to take the oath.”
“Kamaria this condition does not apply to you,” Bakari replied courteously. “You have helped me to reclaim my kingdom. I give you freedom to live here without condition or to leave if you so choose. I give you freedom from all bonds.”
“Thank you Sire,” Kamaria replied bowing deeply.
“Always call me Bakari, you are my friend.”
“Bakari is right Kamaria, you are our friend,” Imoo said placing a paw on her shoulder.
Smiling with happiness Kamaria turned to stand next to her friends, Kopa, Imoo and Bakari each nuzzling her in turn. The lions looked on in amazement as the lion they had marginalized had been accepted. It was a reality check for many of them, one by one they agreed to take the oath. At the same time others refused or in several cases voluntarily wishing to leave the kingdom.
Getting up Malka walked toward Bakari with defiance shining in his eyes. Before he could reach the king Imoo and Kopa sprang in front of their friend blocking his way. On Imoo’s face the eye wound Malka had inflicted had begun to heal, he carried a scar in the same place as father.
“Why Malka? Why do all this, why became like Scar after all he did to you?” Imoo asked looking at the older lion in disbelief.
“You were friends with my parents. My father would have welcomed you. After everything you had seen why take this path?” Kopa asked with bewilderment.
“Scar’s actions taught me that the only way to get what I want in life is to take it by force. Scar may have been wrong to kill Mufasa but he was right in his actions. Take what you want in life, kill for it if you have to, a good code to live by,” Malka replied coldly
“You disgust me. What happened to the adventurous cub I was told stories about?” Kopa retorted.
“He died the day Scar threw him out! Me, Togo and Chumvi were thrown out when we were barely of age to fend for ourselves!”
“My father was a heartless and ruthless tyrant who lived without care for others. I may look like him but I am not him. I see you were his true pupil,” Imoo roared, hatred shining in his eyes.
“I am glad of that,” Malka replied silkily. “So alike in looks both of you are to your fathers.”
“I cannot believe my parents once called you friend not after what you have done to your own daughter. My parents would never do that. No cub deserves that treatment,” Kopa snarled in disgust.
“Kamaria had her place and her uses, she was prized by some lions, had she not turned traitor she would have made an influential alliance,” Malka sneered looking at his daughter.
“Kamaria is more than a pawn to be used,” Imoo snarled with barely controlled rage.
“You made a mistake raising her Malka,” Kopa said smugly. “By treating her badly you made sure she hated you, hated you enough to betray you when offered the chance of a better life. As Rafiki would say you sowed the seeds of your own destruction, you created the perfect traitor.”
“So what did they promise you Kamaria, acceptance, better food?” Malka asked facing his daughter.
“I betrayed you because I hated the way the pride’s cruelty. I hated what you had done to this kingdom. Bakari promised me freedom in return for betraying you. I would have taken my freedom from you by force if necessary. I would have left or I might just have followed Scar’s example” Kamaria replied, laughing at the look of horror that crossed her father’s face at the implication of her words.
Turning their backs on the clearing Bakari, Anan, Kopa, Imoo and Kamaria left the lions to the fate they had decided. At midday the entire kingdom assembled next to the river to witness the formal coronation of Bakari. Standing on a section of rock that jutted out into the water Bakari let out a might roar. At the same time on the edge of the kingdom the lions were being forced out. The new king had taken is place, the invaders had been exiled, hope had returned to the kingdom.
Helping to heal
The days passed, wounds began to heal and the full extent of the lion’s impact on the kingdom became clear. Seeing the uncertainty in their friend’s eyes Kopa and Imoo decided to stay in the jungle to help.
On the wings of birds the news was carried back to the Pridelands. At Pride Rock Simba, Nala, Kiara and the pride listened with keen interest. Sadness and shock filled Simba and Nala’s hearts on hearing what Malka had become. Simba’s heart leaped with joy that Leena was safe. Hearing their son’s choice Simba and Nala looked at each other pride. Sitting next to them Aketch felt her heart sink. For weeks she had been dreaming of his return and their marriage. For a second a spark of jealous anger and doubt entered her heart. Shaking her head Aketch focused on why Kopa was choosing to stay in the jungle.
“I’m being silly, Kopa and Imoo are staying to help their friend. None of it is related to our betrothal. Kopa is so noble to sacrifice his happiness to help a friend. He will come back in a couple of months then we can be married.”
Turning her attention back to Simba and Nala, Aketch listened as they gave the bird a message to carry back to Kopa and Imoo. To her delighted their message included a mention of their marriage taking place one Kopa returned.
Taking to the air the bird took the message back to the jungle to Kopa and Imoo. On its arrival in the jungle the bird found both in deep discussion with Bakari. Hearing the messages Kopa and Imoo felt their heart do summersaults with delighted at the pride Simba and Nala felt. Hearing the mention of the betrothal Kopa felt a cold shiver run down his spine. A slight feeling of guilt as he had barely though of the event or Aketch since arriving in the jungle. Shaking his head he pushed the thoughts out of his mind.
“I am glad Simba and Nala are happy with you both staying longer,” Bakari said listening to the message.
“My father feels he owes a debt to your family for the help they gave him. He said my coming here pays back that debt. He wanted to come himself. Had the Outsiders not existed or been less of threat he would have come with us,” Kopa replied.
Slowly with the help of friends and family Bakari began to rebuild his shattered kingdom. To the relief and delight of the young king his girlfriend Zuri had survived unscathed. The pair were rarely apart and within a week of their reunion they announced their engagement. Bakari was not the only one whose love life was looking, Imoo and Kamari had developed a close friendship that appeared on the verge of something more. Kopa and Enitan’s friendship continued to grow as the days passed and it became common to see them together laughing and exploring.
Out with Imoo and Kopa, Bakari gave his friends a compete tour of the kingdom on a trip spanning four days. Many of the plants were new to the lions, Bakari showing them how to differentiate between those that very poisonous, those that were edible and those that were medicinal.
“This place is amazing,” Kopa said as they stood looking out over a waterfall. “I can see why my Father stayed here so long.”
“I never imagined somewhere this breath taking, it truly is a paradise,” Imoo whispered softly.
“It is that Imoo. I cannot imagine belonging anywhere else. Perhaps here you will find the pieces that will make you whole. We see the guilt you carry. Your scar was gained through an act of selfless bravery. Allow this paradise to heal you,” Bakari replied.

Time passed bringing with it the birth of Tameka’s cub, three girls and a boy. Walking into a clearing Kopa, Imoo and Bakari found her laid in a thicket, four tiny cubs lying next to her while Kamaria, Leena and Enitan looked on. Seeing her brother approach Tameka tensed, her eyes wide with fear. Looking at the cubs Bakari saw they shared characteristics with both their parents.
“They are beautiful Tameka,” Bakari whispered tenderly. “Name the boy after our Father. I swear no harm will come to them while I live.”
“Oh Bakari thank you,” Tameka wept.
“They are innocents. I will not begin my reign by judging cubs on the crimes of their father. Imoo had shown me the folly of that path. When they are old enough we will tell them the truth.”
“I never want them to know the truth! Please Bakari can we not say their father was a lion who lived here and died fighting for us?” Tameka asked desperately.
“Tameka they will be hated by many who cannot see past their father’s actions. If we kept the truth from them they could hate us,” Bakari implored.
“Tameka you should be grateful, Bakari would be well within his right to demand their deaths,” Imoo said coldly.
“YOU DARE!” Tameka roared.
“I am being realistic. Princess you’ve lived a very cushy life that has made you naïve. Believe me princess had my Father been in your brother’s place he would have killed those cubs without a second thought. If you want proof then take a look at Malka, everything he did, the lion he became resulted from my Father’s treatment.”
Glaring at Imoo, Tameka slowly began to realise the truth of his words. Feeling the crackling tension Bakari stepped in between the pair. As the sun set across the jungle that very evening the births of Tameka’s cubs was announce to the entire kingdom along with Bakari’s plan for them. All who heard the news stepped back to listen with very mixed feelings, protected the cubs might be but their future was far from secure.

Four months had passed since Bakari had ascended to the throne. As the sun set the animals gathered at the banks of a river to witness a very special event, the marriage of their king. Standing on section of rocks Bakari and Zuri stood side by side, Imoo and Kopa stood on Bakari’s right while Zuri’s mother and father stood next to her. Above them birds scattered flowers while a wise gorilla spoke the marriage blessing. Picking up two necklaces of flowers he placed the first around Bakari’s neck then the second around Zuri’s. A might cheer erupted from the assembled animal’s at the completion of the ceremony. Turning to face each other the pair kissed, raising whistles from their friends and family.
Leaving the rocks the couples friends and family gathered along the banks of the river for a party. Fireflies fluttered behind flowers, monkeys scattering petals and leaves while others played on shell made drums. On a small stage a chorus of birds sang their hearts out. Bakari and Zuri stood out at the centre of their friends and family who had all come forward to congratulate them. As the band struck up a tune the newlyweds headed onto the dance floor. Watching his friend dance Imoo took a sly look at Kamaria who was also watching them.
“Kamaria would you like to dance?”
“Me, dance? I’d love to,” Kamaria replied blushing slightly.
Heading onto the dance floor Imoo and Kamaria looked at one another, a blush on both their faces. Nearby Kopa and Enitan danced together utterly oblivious to the look of concern on her mother and grandfathers faces.
As the nigh drew on the party broke up. In the darkness Imoo and Kamaria slipped away into the foliage. A short time later the pair stood on rocks underneath a large waterfall the light of the new moon falling on a pool all around them. On Imoo’s face was a white scar. .
“Kamaria these past few months with you have been the happiest of my life, I love you with all my heart.”
“How can you possibly love a freak like me? I caused that scar”
“You are not a freak Kamaria. The scar is white just like you. I am proud to carry the scart. Kamaria you are the moon herself, a beautiful moon who lights up the darkness.”
Staring at one another Imoo and Kamaria kissed. Out of pain and Scar’s legacy had come something better. Bakari’s words had been a prophecy. Two lions who lived in darkness had found their reason to love the night.
In a different part of the jungle Kopa and Enitan lay together in between the routes of a large tree. Enitan’s head resting on Kopa’s shoulder. History had repeated itself and the heir to the throne had broken his betrothal vows.
“Kopa I’ve fallen in love with you. I love Kopa the lion. I don’t care about your blood or what you are.”
“I’ve fallen for you Enitan. If we go down this route things are going to be hard. What we want is against the rules for royalty. You are princess coupled with that you’re the cousin of my friend. I am the heir to my Father’s throne.”
“I don’t care about what Bakari will think. You have a sister who could rule. Kopa forget about the Pridelands and duty. For once in your life do what you want!”
“You’re right Enitan it is time I did something for myself.”
Under the night sky three couples started their lives together. From the two brothers Mufasa and Scar had come to two cousins Kopa and Imoo who lived with their legacy.
