You and I freeze as we see the flash of fire
And as we bound away I see you know.
In your mothers eyes I can tell you know it's dire
And The hissing fire lights your coat with a glow
As we meet a path that grows steep,
Bounding through the fleeing river,
Water splashing with every hoof beat,
The river ends but you do not quiver.
Lunge as the flaming tree starts to surge,
The slap of the water against us.
From frothing waters you first emerge,
Without a whimper or a fuss.
As we leave the familiar wood,
I feel my bones begin to creak.
I realize now what I'd hidden good
Long ago I had left my peak.
Wading through waters to met your doe,
Feeling a pang of sorrow as I watch your face.
I whisper to you what you must know
No objection as you nod and accept your place.
I stay behind and watch you two embrace
And I know these placid times will be rare
And I recall her lovely grace
And slip away from you with a muttered prayer.
