Prologue

When I was born,  my mother and father played with me and loved me every day. When I got a little older father started to go on sled races. My mother and I always hoped he would win. Sometimes he would come home angry because the other teams one. He would fight with my mother somtimes as well. I wouls run into a small hut outside my Mothers house and listen to their argument.

"Are you having an affair with that mutt, Balto?" My father would ask.

"No Steele, I love you" My mother would protest.

"I can't belive I buy this bull!" my father would yell.

"I promise I'm not!"

Then my father would hit my mother and she would come to me. The next day things would be better. my father and mother stil lvoed each other and they loved me too. I tried not to let them fighting get to me. It was just something that they do...right?

One day when I was six months old, I asked my mother

"Momma, who is...Baa-lto?" I would ask.

My mother looked down at me. She cocked her head but opened her mouth to answer me.

"Balto is a dog who used to be my mate. I was a great sled dog and we raised six pups. They are older now and have their own homes. Balto and I broke up because he fell in love with a dog named Delilah. They have three pups now and I am proud of him."

"How come you left him? Do you still love him?" I asked.

"I was hurt when he left but I still love him. But I love your father more than anything. Well...besides you." She replied. "Now you should be getting some rest"

I yawned and lay down, warm by the firse inside mothers house. Soon I fell asleep and drifted into a dream.

---

It was cold and dark. I could tell it was midnight. The moon shone overhead and I looked around. My small paws could feel strong paws running on the ground. I saw my mother walking in the plain that stood before me. My father ran up to her and they nuzzled. I watched them for a while. Then my father growled and lunged at my mother.

"Momma!" I yelled, trying to save her.

They both vanished and I was alone in darkness. The full moon still shone bright and the stars twinkled. Suddenly another dog appeared in front of me.

"Dominic, your destiny awaits you."

My mouth would not move to ask her why. She vanished too and darkness flooded again. I started to run deep into the black. My eyes jolted open.

I had been dreaming. All I saw was blackness. I was blind again. I remembers that I could see my mother and father in my dream. I had never seen the real world though.

My mother nuzzled me. And told me I had been dreaming. It was dawn now so I stood up and stretched. My limbs ached and my neck was stiff.

Dominic, your Destiny awaits you

Those words rang in my ears. I tried to think of somthing else. But they would not go away, I decided to set off and find the destiny chosen for me.

Your True Destiny

When I was a year old, my mother and father left each other. They had fought non stop and decided to stop. I lived with my mother for a while. She would visit my father a lot and the dog Balto as well. I wasn't aloud to meet Balto or visit my father because my Mother was afraid.

I decided to set off and find my destiny that the dog had told me about so long ago. I still remember the dream. The first time I ever saw the world.

I was outside with mother's master's cat. We where playing with a tug toy. My mother walked outside and called me over. I trotted up next to her and smiled.

"Dominic, how are you doing?" She asked.

"I'm fine." I answered.

"Well..."

"Well what?" She asked me.

"I am going to set out and find what my destiny is. I don't belong here. Here I am a blind worthless dog. Out there, I'm free."

My mother didn't answer. She just nuzzled me and whispered.

"Okay, I understand."

That evening, I left. I walked into the outskirts of Nome and ran into the forest. Being blind wasn't all that hard for me. Because I could feel and smell my surroundings. I could smell the Oak trees around me and dodged them easily. I would stop at a river or a rock slide and catch my breath. I decided that I had to hunt for food to satisfy my hunger.

Stealthy I crept in the undergrowth. I smelt a bird not to far away. I jumped at it and caught it in my jaws before it could fly away. Soon I was full and I ran deeper into the forest.

When Night came the forest was silent with distant sounds. I stopped and decided to sleep in a burrow under a tree. Before I could find one, I heard the grass behind me moving. I turned around and felt eyes glaring at me. The next thing I know, it was on top of me. I growled and rolled over, leaving the creature on the ground.

It was a wolf. It jumped up and glared at me. My its sudden glare, I guess its teeth were bared. By its sweet smell I knew it was an female. She was young but older then me. She lunged at me again and I swiped her muzzle with my claws.

"Damnit!" She howled.

I felt her shake her muzzle and scarlet drops slapped the rocks around us.

"I'm ready to raise some Hell!" I growled at her.

She lunged at me again, clamping her jaws around my neck. I threw her off and she kicked my legs out from under me. I hit the ground, the air knocked out of me.

We both scrambled to our paws. I could tell she didn't know I was blind. I wasn't about to let her know either. This time, I lunged at her. I hit her back and bit down on her shoulder. She howled in pain.

"You cursed pup!" She growled.

"I'm not a pup!"

I flew at her again and she dodged away from me. I hit a tree and lay still on the ground. I could feel that it wasn't anger she was showing me, but sorrow.

"Whats wrong?" I asked her, pulling myself up.

"I didn't notice that you were blind." She answered carefully.

"So?" I growled.

"I thought you where a pack member of my enemy." She said.

I shivered and lay back down. My muscles ached and I was sore, I yawned. She came up next to me and lay down beside me. Her thick coat keeping me warm.

The next morning I awoke and she was still there. She was awake as well. I felt the warm sun on my coat, making it glow a red silk colour.

"I didn't notice how exaughsted you where lest night. I tended to your wounds as well" She whispered.

"Thank you" I replied.

We both stood up and she told me she would show me her pack. I was excited to meet a real wolf pack. We both walked in silence for a while. I realized I had forgoted to ask her somthing.

"My name is Dominic, what is yours?" I asked.

"Oh, My name is Aleu." She answered.

I smiled, Aleu was the perfect name for her. I brushed up against her and I felt her smile.

---

After a while the sun started to set. The cold air was coming again and we decided to stop.

"We will reach the pack by tomarrow." Aleu assured me.

We settled in a rock cave near a waterfall. It was big enough for us but to small for a bear. I found a spot in the sunlight and Aleu lay next to me. I nuzzled her and she nuzzled me.

"Dominic, I know we haven't known each other long but...I love you" Aleu whispered.

"I love you too Aleu." I whispered back.

We sat in the sunlight, nuzzling each other until the moon rose.

The next morning when I awoke, Aleu was asleep beside me. Then I remembered what we had done last night. I nuzzled Aleu and ley by head beside her. I couldn't belive that Aleu and I woule be expecting pups.

When Aleu woke up she and I talked for a while until the sun was at the top of the sky. She was happy to be expecting my pups. We set off again to find her pack. We traveled for about two miles before Aleu howled and reseaved a reply.

She started to run towards a clearing at the bottom of the hill we stood on. She nuzzled the wolves that came out to greet her. But they stared at me. I felt their confusion and wonder in my paw.

"This is Dominic. He is blind and...he is my mate." Aleu told them

"But he's a dog"

"He's not wild"

"Congradulations" A voice said from the crowd.

"Sumac, Thank you" Aleu said.

I felt bodies brush my side and guide me into the clearing. They already seemed to accept me.

When the pups came, the pack had stoped in an area near Nome. I didn't realise until the wolf called Sumac told me we where near Nome. I decided to take Aleu and the pups to Nome to meet my mother and my father.

I stood outside the cave while two other wolves gaurded the entrance. When a cheerful howl sounded from inside I ran to see Aleu. Beside her three pups suckled milk from Aleu's flank. I nuzzled Aleu and asked her if she wanted to meet my mother and father who lived in Nome.

"Sure Dominic, my mother and father live in Nome too" She answered cheerfully.

I was so excited to meet her parents as well. The pack stayed in this spot for a month while the pups got bigger. The day before the pack would leave we took the pups to Nome. The pups where old enough to travel but Aleu walked beside them. We walked from alley to alley until we reached my mothers house.

"Stay here" I whispered to Aleu.

I walked into the back yard and saw my mother laying on the porch.

"Dominic?!" My mother asked.

"Mom!" I barked as I ran to nuzzle her.

"Mom, I want you to meet my mate."

Aleu walked into the yard, the three pups following her. My mother gasped and Aleu stoped dead on her tracks.

"Aleu!" My mother asked.

"Mom?" Aleu sounded shocked.

"Mom, do you know Aleu?" I asked, shaking.

"Dominic, Aleu is the daughter of Balto and myself."

I gasped.

"Does that mean...?" Aleu asked.

"No" My mother replied.

"What do you mean 'no' " I asked.

"I mean I'm not your real mother Dominic, you and Aleu are not related."

I gasped again and ran past Aleu into the street. She followed me into the street as well.

"Shit" I whispered under my breath.

A sled team ran straight into Nome and charged towards us. Aleu pushed me and I fell onto the side of the road. I couldn't find Aleu but I know she wasn't alive. I howled for her but I never heard her anwser.

                                *   *   *

My pups had been stoped my Balto as he was walking down the street. If Balto hadn't been there my pups AND Aleu would be lost.

I returned to the pack with my pups and they told me that it would be okay. The next day  before we left to travel, I heard a howl. Aleu!

"ALEU?" I holwed

She raced up to me and nuzzled me. Her paw was twisted and her fur was matted. She told me her father has found her and she was treated well.

Two years later the pups had grown and only one had stayed with the pack. The others had gone to join other packs.

Our last pup was named Delilah, she now leads the Ocean Trail pack. Aleu and I watched her from the stars. She has a destiny yet to be found.

The End
