Wolfheart yawned as four tiny bundles of fur curled up in the arch of her belly. Her kits had been born three moonrises before, and they were coming along nicely, though they didn't have names yet.
Shadowheart squeezed through the entrance to the nursery like he did every morning, coming to check on her and the kits.
"Don't you think we ought to name them?" Asked Wolfheart. "Yeah." He whispered. "You name the first."
Wolfheart scanned each kit, trying to find an easy one to name. Her eyes landed on a small she-cat, redish-orange with a white tail and muzzle.
"Foxkit." She whispered, pointing with her tail to the small newly-named kit. Shadowheart nodded, showing his agreement. "Shall I name the next?" He asked. Wolfheart nodded softly.
It didn't take him long until his eyes fell upon a small black tom that looked exactly like himself. He had probably had his eye on him for a while. "How about Shadowkit?" He asked. "Since he looks so much like me..."
"Alright." Chuckled Wolfheart as Hazelheart tiptoed into the nursery. "Naming kits?" She asked. "Yep." Whispered Shadowheart. "Would you like to name one?" Asked Wolfheart. "We already have Foxkit and Shadowkit covered." She pointed with her tail the the kits.
"Alright!" Whispered Hazelheart excitedly. She looked down upon a small, bony, light brown tom. His muzzle made his face look almost as if it were dented on one side, the way that it was curved.
"Why not...Creasedkit?" She asked, checking on their aproval. Wolfheart and Shadowheart gave each other a look, then nodded.
Sourstorm and Darkpaw came into the nursery. Though their colors were completely camoflauged since it was so dark in the den, their scent and shape stood out, espeacially Sourstorm's blind eyes.
"We heard about the kits." She explained. "We figured we'd come and see them."
"No problem." Purred Wolfheart. Shadowheart bet down and whispered in her ear. "Why not see if they'd like to try and agree on a name for the last kit?" He asked. "Good idea." Nodded Wolfheart.
"Why don't you two try and name the kit?" Asked Wolfheart, as Hazelheart slid through the entrance of the nursery. She must have heard Soundstep calling her for the Dawn Patrol.
Sourstorm and Darkpaw looked at each other excitedly, and examined the last kit. She was a tiny, black kit with a brown tail and white feet and muzzle.
They whispered a bit, probably trying to agree on a name, and they finally nodded an agreement. "Nightkit." Announced Darkpaw. "Okay." Purred Wolfheart. "That'll do."
The two young cats nodded and walked out of the nursery.
"I hope I get out of this place soon." Grunted Wolfheart. "I'm starting to get clostrofobic."
Shadowheart laughed a bit. "No worries. Just about five more moons."
Wolfheart groaned even louder. "You know, I haven't seen Bluewater in a while..." Shadowheart changed the subject. "She did go missing a while ago, didn't she?"
"Yes, but they found her. She had been put into a twoleg nest until one of the Dusk Patrols saved her." Pointed out Wolfheart. Shadowheart thought for a moment, then pricked his ears. "I rememebr now. They've moved her to the elders den." He meowed. "Ah." Purred Wolfheart. "Is Ripplepool the new medicine cat?" She asked. "Yes." Purred Shadowheart. "She is."
Right about that time Firestar poked his head into the nursery. "Shadowheart, will you lead a hunting patrol?" He asked in a whisper. "Yes, sir." He got off of his paws and flicked a farewell with his tail to Wolfheart as he padded out of the nursery.
Wolfheart blinked her eyes open, letting the light flow back into her body, revealing Fourtrees.
Grayheart, Redleaf and Russetfur stepped out of the entrances to Fourtrees for ThunderClan, RiverClan and ShadowClan. "Hello." Purred Grayheart. "Have you forgotten your prophecy, Sister?"
"Now, now, let's not rush to that yet." Redleaf poked Grayheart's ribs wih her paw. "Your kits are lovely." Purred Russetfur. Wolfheart chuckled a bit. "Thank you. All of you."
"Now we need to talk about the prophecy." Chuckled Redleaf. "Sister," Grayheart followed in after her. "It seems as if you have abandoned the fact that you have a prophecy to follow."
Wolfheart then remembered the prophecy. "I couldn't have done anything about it right then. I had kits to take care of." Pointed out Wolfheart. "Look, I've already figured out that a new Clan must be coming to the forest, all I have to figure out now is what 'night' means..."
A heartbeat later the image of Fourtrees began to fade, and Wolfheart found herself awake in the ThunderClan nursery. Foxkit was wailing with hunger.
Wolfheart groaned. Wolfheart had now been in the nursery with the kits for an entire moon. They had learned how to squeak words, but not very clearly.
"What is it, Foxkit?" Yawned Wolfheart.
"Shadowkit's biting my tail!" She screamed. Wolfheart turned to the black tom, who, sure enough, had his muzzle gripped tightly on Foxkit's tail.
"Shadowkit, let go of your sister's tail!" Scolded Wolfheart. Shadowkit obeyed and let his grip loose.
Foxkit's screaming had woken up Nightkit, but Creasedkit was already up, sorting the piles of dirty and clean moss into neat little piles.
Wolfheart didn't really get what the young tom was doing, but she let him continue- he seemed to be doing a pretty good job, and he had obviously decided to do it himself.
"Are we going to be able to go outside of the nursery today?" Asked Nightkit, hyped up.
Wolfheart chukled, but before she could say yes, Hazelheart walked into the nursery.
"Hello, Hazelheart!" Purred the four kits. "Are you coming in to visit?" Asked Wolfheart, expecting her to say yes. "Not exactly." She chuckled. "I'll probably be here for a while."
The kits looked a bit confused, but Wolfheart knew exactly what she meant. "Oh, alright." She winked at Hazelheart.
Hazelheart was expecting kits. Though she wasn't about to tell her kits yet. She was afraid that they'd ask, "Where do babies come from?" or something like that.
"Mama," Mewed Nightkit, frustrated, "Are we, or are we not going outside of the nursery today?"
Wolfheart sighed. "Alright, come along." She meowed, as her kits chased after her, Creasedkit falling in last.
They ran out of the entrance, their tiny bodies small enough to go through without their fur touching the sides.
Their tiny and bored eyes brightened up quickly when they first spotted their first glimpse of the camp.
"Wow!" Gasped Shadowkit. The others were speachless.
Emily padded up to them and purred. "Hello. Is this their first time out of the nursery?"
"Yes." Responded Wolfheart. "Only three more moons before they have a mentor. You know, if Firestar would let you, you could very easily mentor one."
Emily's eyes widened. "Really?" She asked, bewildered. "Of course." Chucked Wolfheart. "Quite honestly, I believe you'd do very well with either Creasedkit or Nightkit."
"Emily!" Called some other cat in the distance, probably Echobreeze.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I must go." She bounded off, flicking her tail in farewell.
"Mama! Mama, wake up!" Screeched Shadowkit. "We're exactly four moons old today!"
Wolfheart blinked the sleep out of her eyes and yawned. "Yes, yes." She exadurated. "That's wonderful!"
She didn't exactly know what her kits were making such a fit about- it would be atleast two more moons before they could become apprentices.
Wolfheart looked around, only counting three of her four kits. "Where's Creasedkit?" She asked, twitching her ears. "He went to see Ripplepool." Replied Foxkit.
Wolfheart got up from her nest in which she was laying on and shook off the clinging pieces of moss.
"You stay here with Hazelheart. I'll go and get him."
Wolfheart poked her head inside of the medicine cats den, and heard he voices of Ripplepool and Creasedkit somewhere.
"Creasedkit?" She called in. Ripplepool poked her head out of the entrance and smiled. "He's in here with me. No worries. Come in."
Wolfheart went into the dark den carved out of a large boulder and found Creasedkit sorting some herbs for Ripplepool.
Wolfheart chuckled. "He's quite a sorter." She purred. "Quite." Smiled Ripplepool. "You know, he'd make a wonderful medicine cat."
Wolfheart was aware of this. "Maybe you could mentor him." Suggested Wolfheart. Ripplepool shrugged. "Perhaps. We'll have to wait and see."
"Finished!" Called Creasedkit excitedly. "Very good." Chuckled Ripplepool. "All sorted out right and everything." She gave him a small lick of gratitude and pushed him towards his mother. "Run along now. I may have an ill cat come in."
"Hello." Came a voice slipping through the nursery entrance. It was Shadowheart, probably coming to check in on the kits and herself.
He twitched his ears when he saw Hazelheart asleep on a nest, then smiled.
"Is she?" He asked in a whisper. Wolfheart nodded.
Right about then Ravenpaw came into the nursery. "Is she awake?" He asked. Hazelheart twitched her ears and lifted her head. "I am now." She yawned, blinking sleep from her eyes.
Ravenpaw padded over to her and lay down.
"It seems like I never get a moment away from Firestar." Snorted Shadowheart. "And, well....It turns out that Soundstep has fallen sick with white cough over night. Ripplepool is attending to him now."
Wolfheart frowned. If Soundstep died, then Shadowheart or Echobreeze one would probably be made deputy, and if Shadowheart was made deputy, that means that the kits would have rare time ever seeing him- he'd be so busy all the time.
"And here's something worse..." He sighed. "I think that another Clan's scent was found on our territory. And unknown territory..."
Wolfheart twitched her ears, remembering her dream. "We'll have to wait and see what happens." Sighed Wolfheart. "Until then, why not come and rest your paws for a while?"
A screech awoke Wolfheart, and she felt Shadowheart jumping up from beside her, his black pelt bristling. "What was that?" Gasped a voice from across the room, it was Ferncloud.
"I'll go take a look." Meowed Shadowheart cautiously.
Soon the kits had gotten up from their sleeping spot and had begun to poke their small heads through the nursery entrance.
Foxkit gasped. "Mama, come look!"
Wolfheart got up slowly and went to join them.
A cat- a cat that looked much like Firestar- was in the clearing, startled as Echobreeze stood alrmed, her pelt bristling.
Shadowheart yowled loudly, and soon half of the Clan had surrounded the cat.
"What are they doing to Firestar?" Asked Creasedkit.
"I don't think that's Firestar." Murmured Wolfheart, silencing Creasedkit by putting her tail over his muzzle.
Soon, Firestar ordered the cats to clear out and go back to the dens. He told them that he'd take care of whoever this cat was.
Once Shadowheart came back to the nursery, Wolfheart knew that this must be a cat from the new Clan. She figured it was time to tell Firestar about it.
"Stay here a moment." Wolfheart whispered to Shadowheart once he slipped through the entrance, and she left the nursery, heading towards Firestar.
She stepped cautiously, afraid that Firestar would snap at her for coming towards her when he had told the other cats to go back to the dens.
Firestar was examining the twin-like figure to him, and the cat just stood stiff-legged, afraid and curious.
"F-Firestar?" She stuttered when she aproached him. "I think I may know where this cat comes from..."
"So, you're telling me that this cat must come from a Clan that you figured would be coming to the forest?" Firestar asked once Wolfheart finished. "Yes, sir." Replied Wolfheart, hoping she wasn't making a fool of herself.
"Is this true?" Firestar turned to the other cat, who had been ordered to silence until Firestar had told him to speak. "Y-Yes. I come from LeafClan- our Clan is actually from very, very far away. Probably Moons away, in fact. I am Firerain, deputy of LeafClan. And my mate, Wolfstar, is the leader."
This was oddly strange. Wolfstar and Firerain. "Is your Clan coming here?" Wolfstar asked. "Yes. Posibbly staying...I'm sorry...But, our Clan is so...So helpless right now. We need shelter, food and water. Firestar- it is Firestar, right?- could LeafClan share ThunderClan's camp until we find a place of our own?"
Wolfheart's ears perked. Share the camp? Was this cat some sort of stupid, or what? Then again, Firestar looked thoughtful. Wolfheart knew how sympethetic he was about cats in need.
"Well..." He hesitated, then sighed. "Just until your Clan is settled."
Firerain's eyes lit up with joy a thankfulness. "But, just one more question." Firestar meowed. "Do you follow StarClan?"
Firerain looked a bit confused. "No, sir. We follow MoonClan. MoonClan works like this: the moon changes every moon, correct? Well, we believe that, every time a cat dies, the moon gets bigger, and, once the moon is full, the cats in the moon move to the stars, where they watch over us."
Firestar twitched his ears. "Very interesting. We believe that once cats die, they go to Silverpelt, and they are stars."
Firerain let out a purr. "Interesting." he meowed, but he was cut off by the scent of new cats overflowing the camp, then a gray head poking through the gorse tunnel.
"Firerain?" It called, then twitched its ears once it spotted him.
Firerain padded up to the cat, and nuzzled her. "There is another Clan living here, but their leader has been kind enough to let us share the camp until we find our own home."
He whispered something to her, and soon the entire LeafClan poured into the entrance of ThunderClan.
"Hello." Greeted the gray she-cat. "I am Wolfstar, leader of LeafClan."
Firestar purred. "I have already heard of you. Please, introduce me to your Clan, then I will introduce you to mine."
Wolfstar yowled for the cats to break up into groups- warriors, apprentices, elders, queens and kits.
Wolfstar walked up to the warriors first, and pointed with her tail to each one as she talked. She first pointed to a small gray, white and black she-cat, probably just turned into a warrior. She was skinny with brown eyes. "This is Stormipelt." Announced Wolfstar. Stormipelt bowed her head respectivley and meowed a greeting.
She moved over to the next cat, a large, brown tom. His amber eyes shown as if he were in command. "This is Dogfoot." Meowed Wolfstar. Dogfoot also bowed his head.
She padded to the next cat. A red, elderly she-cat. Wolfheart was surprised that she wasn't yet an elder. "This is Emberbreeze, soon to become an elder, she is our most valuble warrior, brave and loyal to all she belives in." Something else caught Wolfheart's eye, though. Emberbreeze was missing one of her piercing ember eyes, and all that remained was a scar in the shape of claw marks.
Wolfheart was knocked out of her stare when Wolfstar spoke again, anouncing the name "Scratchedface". When Wolfheart looked, she saw that he was a lean brown tom with a nasty scar on the right side of his face. Then she heard Wolfstar say that his apprentice name had been Brownpaw, until he had gotten the scar, that's how he earned his warrior name.
Wolfstar then padded over to the apprentice group, and announced the name "Chihuauapaw" to a small, light brown, jumpy she-cat. Her light green eyes shown with the hyperness of twelve cups of coffee, and she looked a bit younger than the other apprentices.
Wolfstar announced that a small white tom's name was Killerpaw, though he didn't look like he was that much of a killer.
Wolfstar moved over to the next apprentice, Greenpaw. She was a tabby she-cat, and was the medicine cat apprentice.
The elders were next in line. "This is Waterfur, who became an elder only four sun rises ago." Waterfur was a blueish-gray she-cat who looked very much like Bluesar, from what Wolfheart had been told. Wolfheart hadn't been around when Bluestar walked the forest, but she was certain that she was the noblest of all leaders.
The second elder was Owlflight, who was a very old tom. He looked like a leopard, only his main color was dark brown, and his spots were light brown. He barley had a tail, and his blue eyes were tired an dull.
There turned out to only be two elders, so that meant that all was left was the medicine cat, the queens and kits, and they had already met the deputy, Firerain.
There were only two kits, and their mother was the only queen.
"This is Whitewolf, and her kits, Sharpkit and Treekit."
Whitewolf was pure white, all except a black muzzle and chest. Her blue eyes were kind and gentle, like a perfect mother. "Who is your mate?" Asked Wolfheart, hoping she wouldn't mind. "Dogfoot." She replied kindly.
Her two kits, Sharpkit and Treekit, were about the size of Wolfheart's own kits. Sharpkit was a tom who had long, dark brown hair (A bit like his father), and Treekit was a she-cat that had medium-sized tortishell fur.
"And, the last cat, Herbcloud is our medicine cat." Meowed Wolfstar, finally padding up to the sweet herb-scented brown-and-white patched she-cat. "Greetings." Meowed Herbcloud softly.
"Well, now that I know your Clan, I guess that you need to know mine." Meowed Firestar, right before yowling so that the rest of ThunderClan came out of the dens.
Firestar had announced all of the names by moonhigh. Echobreeze, Emily, Shadowheart, Soundstep (Though he was in the medicine cats den asleep)...
Every cat from head to tail. Firestar too had divided them into groups.
"Well, now that we all know each other can we please go to sleep?" Meowed Dustpelt bitterly. Firestar nodded permission, and the cats tiredly began to pour back into the dens.
"Where do we sleep?" Meowed Sharpkit, his eyes full of curiosity. "There is a den for each group. Warriors in the warriors den, apprentices in the apprentices den, elders in the elders den, so on. That is where each will sleep."
Wolfheart walked over to Whitewolf and her kits. "Come, you will be in the nursery with me and my kits."
Treekit's eyes grew big with delight. "You mean that there's other kits to play with?"
Wolfheart chuckled "Yes, there is. You can meet them in the morning, but right now you need to go to sleep."
