Way of the Wolf
Part 2
Balto looked at Drei nervously. How did he know about their father? He was never around, this was impossible.
“So, Drei, you said our father looked like me?”
“If I can recall correctly, yes. He had dark eyes, and light fur and brown fur, and very dark ears…like you.”
Kiche looked at Jenna as they went on. Kiche turned as she heard barking from a distance. She could make out a large black shadow that was becoming more distinct as the barking came closer.
“Drei, I think we should be going now,” Kiche said while watching the pack come closer.
“Kiche, not now…” Drei turned and saw the pack, inching their way closer. He widened his eyes, he knew, and so did Kiche. They were looking for them.
“Balto, come with us. We have to leave, and I need you…I have to tell you something. But we must go, Kiche and I, and you and Jenna.” Drei looked nervous, Balto looked toward Jenna and she nodded.
“Ok, we’ll go…” Balto was interrupted by Drei and Kiche sprinting off. “Come on Jenna, let’s go!”
They four of them bolted out into the distance as the wolf pack followed. Drei could hear them panting, he looked back and saw the blood thirsty vicious wolves he and Kiche once roamed with. He knew why they were coming. Drei and Kiche had once ran with them and they had been caught stealing from the shop in
The panting became heavier and Drei ran harder. Jenna had a hard time keeping up; she just wasn’t used to this kind of running. The pack was coming closer and closer to Jenna; she ran harder and escaped them.
After ten minutes, the pack was worn out and stopped chasing, and the four of them trudged on. The night had fallen and Kiche found a small cave they could settle for the night.
As night turned into day, the rosy glare of the sun leaked through the opening in the cave. Balto slowly opened one eye to see Drei, Kiche, and Jenna, all still asleep. He opened both eyes and walked out the opening. Snow covered the vast regions of
“Balto?” Drei said sleepily.
“Oh, Drei, I didn’t think you were awake,” Balto replied.
“No, I wasn’t…so why you up so early?” Drei asked.
“I don’t know, thinking of Dad I suppose.”
“Hmm…,” Drei mumbled, “Do you want to go find him?”
“Find who?”
“Dad, you fool.”
“Drei, he’s probably long gone by now.” Balto let out a sigh.
Jenna and Kiche raised their heads up from their slumber. They all looked at each as if they all knew what had to be done. Jenna yawned and Kiche arose from the pile of leaves.
“So, when should we leave to go find him?” Kiche asked to no one in particular.
“Oh..,” Balto said, “Were you awake?”
“Well, of course! You guys practically yell when you talk!” Jenna explained.
“Well, this sounds like fun.” Drei said.
They walked out of the cave and into the wide world that they were about to enter to find someone who didn’t think was alive. But, Drei and Balto had hope, enough hope for all four of them.
