Toby: The main character of the story, Toby is a bloodhound/husky mix.  His combination of his father's dark brown coloration and his mother's husky appearance gives him a wolflike look which he is very proud of.  In fact, his greatest dream is to be a wolf dog- namely his idol, Balto (kind of ironic, given the number of times Balto has wished he wasn't one).  Perky and playful, he loves to have fun and has a knack for getting into trouble.  He sometimes lets his emotions get the best of him, especially when confronted by his own shortcomings.  But when push comes to shove, his loyalty is second to none.

Luna: Toby's best friend.  She has a forgiving attitude in spite of the fighters' blood that flows through her veins (plus some other bloodlines that are a mystery even to herself).  In later stories, as she learns more about herself and her heritage, she finds it easier to relate to Aleu, as opposed to Toby's obsession with Balto.  Like Toby, she loves to have fun.  But she takes matters of friendship very seriously, particularly her friendship with Toby.  She is usually fairly level-headed, but when neccessary she can be a formidable spitfire.

Terry: Toby's mother, a purebred husky.  Kind and affectionate, she often worries about Toby's wild behavior and wilder dreams.  She knows what it's like to be on the streets and wants no part of the outcast's life for Toby.  Raising the rambunctious pup has proven to be somewhat taxing on her sanity at times, but she presses on, looking forward to the day when he will find his own home and a new family to drive up the wall.

Rex: Toby's father, a purebred bloodhound.  Rex belongs to Nome's police chief and is the uncontested best tracker in town.  Because of his thin fur, he seldom ventures outside unless he's on duty.  When he does go out, he tends to be irritable.  But deep down he is caring and supportive.  Although like Terry he wants a good life for his son, and would personally prefer to see Toby grow up to be a tracker, he tries not to squelch Toby's dreams any more than he must in order to keep him safe.

Pete: Toby's nasty half-brother, a purebred husky and a purebred nuisance.  Pete has been bitter ever since his father died in a dogsled accident, and even more so since Terry fell in love with Rex sometime later (possibly he thinks she is being disloyal to the memory of his father).  He often picks on Toby about being a mutt, and despises him most out of all of Rex and Terry's pups because he is the only one who looks like a mutt (with the others, he can pretend that they're either his full siblings or no relation to him at all).  He has a weakness for girls, most of whom wish he would leave town. Or better yet, the galaxy.

Haley and Phoebe: Luna's sisters, unseen until Toby Part Three.  Even though they are complete opposites, they were adopted by the same family and pretty much act like conjoined (siamese, in layman's terms) twins.  Haley is the brains of the duo (not that that's saying much with these two) and lives by the motto: "Open ears, insert news."  Phoebe's motto, on the other hand, appears to be "Open mouth, insert foot."

Alicia Day: Terry's owner.  When Toby failed to find a home, he continued to live with Terry at Alicia's house.  Alicia is a good owner who cares for her dogs with all the love and affection any canine could ask for.  She loves Toby, but sometimes finds him to be a bit of a handful.
