Chapter 1: Harsh Beginnings

Blood lust was in its eyes as it chased the helpless creature through the forest. When he had cornered it, his muzzle was covered with saliva. The small creature looked in horror to see the animal was a dog.

Screams of pain echoed off the trees. Crows flew at the noise trying to find their next meal. The dog raked its teeth up and down the animal’s front legs. When he was done he left, not even giving any respect to the creature that lay still before him. The dog heard a faint call in the distance. It was his master Chet. He ran to the village as fast as possible to see what Chet wanted. When he reached the house with the old green roof he barked.

Out came Chet with two animals behind him. One was his mate, Delicate was her name, and she was a dark brown with a white underbelly and muzzle. The other was his year old son, Kaltag. He was yellow like his father Kail who stood before him.

Lying in the snow with patches of blood and fur all around her, the small creature looked to the stars and whispered “one day I will have my revenge, but for now I’m too far gone.” A man with a cane in his hand walked around on his usual path. He was looking at his trapping lines when he saw her. He rushed over to the young wolf pup. He bent over at her side and she let out a low growl. “You probably won’t make it but I have only a few months left and haven’t had company in ages.”

The old man whose name was Rob had stitched a gash on her neck and put 32 stitches on her front two legs. He now called her Ashley but after an incident in the fire place he later called her Blak Ash. Her name was spelt differently than most men would spell it, but he knew that she was special and so she deserved a special name.

Kaltag grew learning how to be a sled dog. Kail had taught him many techniques of how to win. Kaltag listened to his mother about taking care of himself and others.

Blak Ash had healed except she kept the bandages on her legs. She had gotten hideous scars there and she hid them so Rob wouldn’t feel bad for her. She still remembered her plan for revenge so she trained in the fields when Rob was sleeping. She felt a pain of guilt for Rob; he was getting weak and had little money to feed her. She often brought home a rabbit or a ptarmigan she had scavenged or killed during her afternoon run. Rob had rarely took her to town but the time he did Blak Ash had seen Kail fiery rose through her spine and she lunged at the dog. But she realized that this dog was no older that she was. He looked strangely alike the vicious snarling beast that had tried to kill her but he was not. She found out later by a traveling sled dog team that he was Kail’s son. She knew that the next time she saw him she would tare his throat out. Months past as Kaltag grew into a fine young sled dog. He was later found by Steele’s master in a team gathering were the pups try out for the teams surrounding the area. Kail passed away shortly after Kaltag was accepted into the team.

Blak Ash lied next to Rob. He felt cold she knew he had died in his sleep. She licked his hand and howled a mournful cry. She walked for the door but suddenly a guy walked in and saw Rob. There was a letter on Rob’s lap. It was his will. The man picked it up and read it. Everything was to go to his son… Chet. The man grabbed Blak Ash’s scruff and dragged her to his sled and called to the dogs to go.

She knew that name and now she could kill his son to bad Kail was dead he would never be able to save his son. They arrived shortly and the man put a collar on the enraged Blak Ash. He dragged her to the door and knocked loudly. Chet walked out. He was a tall man with black hair and the beginning of a beard. Kaltag barked in the back yard.

The man told Chet the news. He bowed his head and looked at Blak Ash. He grabbed her collar and brought her out back. Kaltag saw the beast that had tried to attack him before him. He was petrified. He tried to flee, but his leash only went so far. Chet hooked her up next to Kaltag. Chet was happy he wanted to get a female. The ones at the animal sales were too pricey. He was hoping that he would get some champion pups out of them.

Blak Ash grinned angrily at Kaltag. She charged at him. He ran to the end of his leash and cowered. Blak Ash stopped this was no fun he wasn’t going to fight back. She whimpered at her hopeless life. Kaltag looked up and thought may be she isn’t bad after all…

Blak Ash looked up to see Kaltag coming over. She growled at him she wasn’t going to kill him at least not yet, but she wasn’t going to sink so low to befriend him. Kaltag stopped. Maybe she won’t be her friend he got angry and yelled “you are one of the most Stubborn, Pig Headed self absorbed Bitch I have ever met!’

She turned and rose and growled back at him “Well at least my father never tried to murder you!!” Kaltag realized why she was so ticked off.

Blak Ash felt the wounds in her legs. They burned like someone had just thrown salt on them. He throat was dry and a lump formed were Kail had bitten her neck. Kaltag would pay...
