THE WRATH OF STEELE

By Shadow D Husky

It has been one week since Balto made that famous serum run. Many new dogs were coming to Nome. It seems that everyone in town accepted Balto now, except for Steele.

It was daylight and still winter, and snow blanketed the ground. In the alley behind the butcher shop, two dogs walked. One of the dogs was a black and white husky, with a normal build, and gray markings on each eye. The other dog was a lightly built husky, with a coat color best described as a mix between purple and gray, with a sand colored underside and three dark stripes on his back.

Star, the smaller of the two, spoke first.

“Hey, Shadow, I’ll show you where the butchers place is. Sometimes he throws out meat that spoiled.”

“You lead the way, Star.” Answered Shadow, the black and white husky.

Meanwhile, a pair of vengeful blue eyes watched the two dogs from around a corner.

As Star and Shadow approached the back of the butchers shop, a large black and white malamute jumped in front of them.

“Well, well, well; what do we have here?” taunted the large black and white dog.

“Oh. H.h..hi Steele!” Star trembled.

“Who is your friend?” Steele asked with a sinister grin.

“Oh! This is Shadow. He is my new best friend. He is new here.” Star replied.

“Is that so?” Steele said, circling around the two dogs. “Well, Shadow, you need to learn a few important rules. The first rule is no one can enter or leave Nome without permission.”

“Permission?” Inquired Shadow. “Permission from who?”

“From ME!” Steele roared as he lunged at Shadow.

Steele grab Shadow by the scruff of the neck in his jaws, and slung him down next to a bucket of water. Before Shadow could get up, Steele pounced onto his back and pinned him down. The blow from the heavier dog landing on top of him put Shadow into a slight daze. Star watched in horror, too afraid to say or do anything.

“The second rule,” Steele sneered, lifting Shadow’s head up above the bucket. “Is that I am going to make life miserable for everyone who betrayed me for that Wolfdog! And every single one of their friends too!”

Steele shoved Shadow’s head down into the bucket. Shadow’s nose bled as it broke through the top layer of ice, and was submerged into the icy water. Steele lifted Shadow’s head back out of the bucket. Shadow was coughing and gasping for air.

“The third rule,” Steele said as he dunked Shadow’s head repeatedly in and out of the bucket. “Is, Jenna is mine!”

Shadow was coughing violently, desperately trying to get the water out of and air into his lungs. Steele grabs Shadow by the neck again and hurls him into a barrel. The barrel shatters as Shadow impacts with it. Shadow struggles to get up, but is still to dazed to stand. Steele starts to move towards Shadow.

“Stop it, Steele!” cried Star, moving in between Steele and Shadow.

Steele grabs the bucket in his jaws, wheels around, and bangs Star outside the head with it. Star is instantly knocked senseless, collapsing on the soft snow.

Steele walks over to the still dazed Shadow, turns around, and kicks Shadow with his hind legs. Shadow groans in pain, now coming out of his daze. Steele begins to move up in an ominous manner towards Star. He lifts his front leg and is about to come down hard on Star when…

“Don’t you touch him…” Growled Shadow, fully recovered from his daze and on his feet.

“What are you going to do about it, wuss?” Snickered Steele, his back still turned to Shadow.

“THIS!” Growled Shadow as he leapt and landed on Steele’s back. Shadow’s hind legs dug into Steele’s sides, and his front legs grasped and clawed at his neck.

“No one calls me a wuss!” Shadow raged, biting down hard on Steele’s right ear.

Steele howls in pain, and starts bucking around violently trying to shake the smaller dog off. But Shadow holds on tight, and continues to bite down on Steele’s ear.

Unable to dislodge the dog on top of him, Steele rolls on his back. Shadow, pinned under the heavier Steele, relents his grasp on Steele’s ear and struggles to get free. Steele staggers to his feet.

“J..just you wait!” Steele roared, out of breath from the ordeal. His ear had a noticeable tear in it, that was oozing blood. “I will get you back for this, Shadow. I’ll kill both of you!”

Steele ran off out of the alley.

Shadow approached Star, nudging him with his paw.

“Star, speak to me.” Shadow begged.

“No, mommy. I don’t want to go outside. The other dogs pick on me.” Star babbled.

“Snap out of it.” Shadow said, giving Star a good shake.

Star came to his senses and leapt to his feet.

“Shadow! Shadow! You alright!” Star exclaimed.

“Of course I am.” Shadow smiled. “But you took a rather bad whack on the head. I think that is the bravest thing I have seen you do.”

“It is?” Star inquired. “But you’re my best friend, Shadow. I don’t want to see you get hurt.”

“Come on, Star.” Shadow said with a smile. “Let’s go find that meat.”

“Ok.” Star agreed. “Follow me.”

“Oh, one more thing; Steele said he’d be back, and he was going to kill both of us.” Shadow said.

“AH!” Screamed Star. “We are both dead dogs!”

“No, don’t worry.” Shadow replied. “I have a plan.”

The next morning, Shadow was walking alone. He walked past the corner of the grocery store when he was suddenly knocked on his back.

It was Steele, pinning Shadow down in the snow. Steele wrapped his paws around Shadow’s throat and begin to choke him. Shadow coughed and gagged, struggling to breath.

“I told you I’d be back.” Steele chuckled. “And now I am going to kill you.”

TO BE CONTINUED

Steele continued to squeeze Shadow’s throat. Shadow was gasping for breath, and was beginning to black out. He didn’t know how much longer he could hold out.

“Leave him be, Steele.” A voice said to a distracted Steele.

This distraction was just enough for Shadow to realize that his hind legs were free. He shoved his hind legs with all his might into Steele’s groin.

“OOOOWWWOOOOOO!” Steele wailed in pain, and rolled off of Shadow.

Shadow, coughing and wheezing, staggered away from Steele.

“Thanks Balto.” Shadow managed to say, still wheezing. “You saved me.”

Steele, recovering from the blow, realized who had distracted him and moved in towards Balto.

“I don’t want to fight you Steele.” Cautioned Balto. “But I can’t let you terrorize my friends.”

Steele growled and pinned Balto against a wall.

At that moment, Star ran in.

“Shadow! Balto!” Star exclaimed.

“Star, make sure you and Kaltag are ready!” Shadow instructed.

Star nodded and ran off to do as he was told.

Steele continued to push Balto against the wall, putting pressure on his chest with his front legs.

“Leave him alone Steele, your fights with me!” Shadow yelled.

“Yeah?” Steele snickered. “What are you going to do about it, you yellow-bellied cur?”

“My belly is white,” Shadow growled, clamping his teeth down on Steele’s tail. “Not yellow.”

Steele yelped in pain and got off of Balto. Enraged, he turned towards Shadow.

“You are all yellow!” Steele roared. “I’m going to make you wish you were never born!”

With that Shadow bolted off, and Steele started after him.

“Come back here you yellow dog!” Steele yelled. “Come back and fight me like a dog!”

Shadow led Steele on a chase through town, rounded several buildings, the came to a narrow alley that dead ended with a balcony over it. Shadow stopped, apparently cornered.

“Ha!” Steele laughed. “Do you have any last words, mongrel?”

“As a matter of fact, I do.” Shadow replied. “Star, now!”

Shadow scooted out of the way as Steele looked up, just in time to see Star push a large bucket of yellow paint off of the balcony. It spilled all over Steele, and the bucket slammed on his head knocking him to the ground. Steele was now completely covered in yellow paint.

“Who’s the yellow dog now?” Shadow chuckled.

“Oh…grrrrrRRRR!” Steele growled, now thoroughly enraged. “You’re dead, mutt!”

Shadow took off, as Steele ran after him. Shadow ran around town, weaving in and out of alleyways, with Steele right at his heels. He finally started heading towards the kennels.

Shadow saw that there was a trail of grease leading into the kennels, and managed to jump in the door diagonally so he would avoid it. Steele, blinded with anger, didn’t see it and ran right into the grease. Steele started slipping and sliding, heading right towards an open cage. He flew inside the cage, hitting the back wall of it hard.

“Kaltag, now!” Shadow shouted.

Kaltag, waiting for the command, slammed the door to the cage shut and locked it.

Steele regained his composure and realized he was locked inside the cage. He started clawing at the bars, in a futile attempt to get free.

“Hey!” Steele yelled. “You better let me out of here!”

“I think all the dogs in Nome will have to vote on that, Steele.” Balto said, walking into the kennels.

“Yeah, until then we can all look at you and laugh.” Shadow joked.

Star came into the room, and laughed.

“Hey, you caught him!” Star said. “Steele can’t bully anyone in there.”

“Steele is the most malevolent, “ Kaltag started ranting. “The most fiendish, the most sinister, the most…..”

“He’s a bad dog!” Star butted in.

“You said it!” Kaltag said, patting Star on the back.
