Prologue
It was really cold tonight to be summer. The air was thick with ominous, dark clouds, that sent chills through anyone's spine on whoever looked at them. It mostly rested upon a farm in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The farm was full of interesting things. Well, not very interesting, but probably interesting for a Las Vegas city dog that was brought to the farm for the very first time in his or her life. It had sheep, horses, cows, chickens and turkeys, a barn, fences, open space, and maybe a few other dogs, which would usually be Collies or Border Collies, unless it was a breeding farm of huskies.
In the open space on the farm, in a field fenced around, about twenty sheep slept peacefully, being guarded by a Border Collie male, who was laying down and keeping his eyes closed, but ears pricked and alerted.
He was called a watch dog. Watch dogs are dogs that guard something that anything can get their hands on without letting anyone know except a dog on anything. They could be on farms, or in the city. The city ones were usually dangerous though, because they would have to harm a human. Farm dogs didn't have to hurt humans, only wild animals that harmed the smaller animals on the farm.
There was a loud howl in the air, and the border collie opened his eyes. He looked up and listened, his ears twitching, at the interesting noise. It was a wolf.
The young male growled deeply in his throat, and got up, staring closely at a canine larger than him, appearing on top of a hill and looking at him. It climbed down the hill slowly and began to go very close to him.
He lowered his ears back and sunk to the ground when he realized that this was a female, and didn't mean harm. He crouched to the ground and let the new visitor smell and investigate him.
He gulped, and cleared his throat. "Who are you?" he asked. "Shouldn't a pretty wolf like you be with your pack, hunting other animals and leaving other animals here alone?" the male asked, muttering a little.
The female wolf stepped back, and sat down in front of him. "I'm not here for food," the female replied. "I just wanted to see what was so interesting on here to the otehr woves. I don't see anything at all. It's my first time here." She mumbled also. "I'm Ashlee, heir of the Alpha Male and Female of Blue Clan."
"Well, I'm Maxwell, Max for short. I'm heir of no one," the border collie, known as Maxwell, mumbled, and looked away in a bored voice.
Ashlee giggled softly. "Your kind of cute, you know," she flirted a little, but was being honest.
Maxwell glared at Ashlee. He just grunted with digust, and looked away again.
Ashlee frowned, not liking the fact that she was being ignored by a dog. "Listen, Maxwell, or Max," she growled softly. "What I'm here for is, all of my pack members having been getting killed by hunters and predators, and other rival packs, and we're looking for more. My father sent me to look for someone for the night," she explained the best she could. "I think your the right one to be looking for."
Maxwell smiled a little, and cracked a small laugh. "Why do you think so?" he asked, shooting a little attitude. "I'm only a dog, you know. I've got no expierence about wolves and their pack life."
Ashlee just raised a brow at him, and turned serious again. "Please, Maxwell," she begged. "Your our only hope! And my father will kill me if I don't get anyone. The only place I could find a wolf is in someone else's pack, but do you expect me to just walk on someone else's turf and ask an enemy to join us?" Ashlee barked in a serious tone.
"Well, what will my owners think of me when I run off with a stupid-" Maxwell looked at Ashlee and paused when he saw Ashlee making the 'puppy dog' eyes. He smiled a little. She looked kind of cute to him too. Maxwell thought as he looked at his paws. "Well.... okay then.... but if it doesn't go to well, I'll have to go back home," he said, getting up and padding over to Ashlee. "Lead the way, Princess."
Ashlee smirked back. "I knew you'd give up." She rubbed her nose against his, making Maxwell sneeze and glare at her, but she just ignored him. She ran off with the young border collie following behind. 'I hope it does work out,' thought Ashlee, putting on a worried glance as she and him made there may into the woods. 'This will be a rough week for him....'
Stars twinkled above the elder's head, as he stared into the dark of the night, waiting...
He sighed, and lowered his head, looking worried. "Oh, Ashlee," he said softly. "Where are you? It's been too long." He lowered his head again and closed his eyes, and thought. His ears pricked, when he heard paw steps. He looked up and opened his eyes, seeing a female wolf with a Border Collie male.
"Ashlee!" the older wolf male cried. He ran up to her and nuzzled her. "Oh, Ashlee! Where were you?" he asked, sounding frightened.
Ashlee rolled her eyes. "You worry too much, dad," she laughed softly.
Her father opened his eyes, and looked at the Border Collie. He growled at him. "Ashlee, who is this disgusting thing?!" he snapped.
Ashlee stepped back from the older wolf. "Well, you told me to look for some more wolves. Well this was all I could find."
The elder kept growling. "Ashlee, you know that we can't accept dogs in the pack. That's just wrong!"
Ashlee frowned at her father. "Well, this is all I could find, alright?!" Ashlee snapped. "Did you expect me to walk onto someone else's turf and ask an enemy to join us?!"
Ashlee's father glared at her for a moment. His eyes began to soften, when he realized that she was right. He sighed. "Alright, Ashlee," he said softly. "We'll give him one chance. If he does anything wrong for three days, we'll have to do something about him." He glared at the Border Collie, and then walked away.
The Border Collie male, just stared after him. He lowered his ears and whimpered.
Ashlee walked up to him and nuzzled him in a comforting way. "It's alright, Max," she said softly. "You'll get use to it soon." 'I hope so....'
The older wolf watched Maxwell and Ashlee as they padded into his cave and went to rest. He sighed and looked up at the stars again. 'Is this really going to work?' he thought worriedly to himself.
He shook his head. 'What is my father thinking of me now, as he is watching me from up above?' The wolf got up and padded inside the same den Ashlee and Max were sleeping in.
He laid down beside his daughter, and closed his eyes. He opened one and took a peek at Maxwell. He sighed again, and quickly fell asleep.
Chapter One
"Wait, Maxwell! Get back here now!"
Maxwell panted, his tongue hanging out as his feet carried him after a small white furry thing that blended with the snow and had a fluffy ball as a tail.
The rabbit jumped for cover in a hole, making it difficult for the excited pup to get him.
Maxwell growled irritably, and sat down, making a pouty look on his face. He looked up and whimpered when he saw a larger wolf walk up to him.
The wolf sighed, and shook his head. He growled at the dog. "If I told you a million times, I said a million times, don't chase after prey until I order you too!" the wolf scold him. "Your going to need a lot of patience to catch something for your family."
Maxwell snorted and rolled his eyes at him. 'What do you mean, 'family'? This isn't my family. Your only wolves, and I'm just a dumb mutt.' He thought with a mutter.
The wolf sighed again. "Come on, Maxwell," he said, his tone a little softer. "We can try again later." The wolf began to pad away, with Max trailing behind him with an upset body language.
It wasn't too long until they made it to a camp full of other wolves. No dogs of any breed though. Maxwell sat down and watched as the older wolf walked away and left him behind to a den, where no one was aloud unless,it was one of his offspring.
Maxwell growled, when he saw a trio and their leader, a female walking to him.
"Well, well. If it isn't failurewell," the leader mocked, with his three friends snickering annoyingly behind him.
"Go away, Lynnette," Maxwell snapped at her.
"Awe, what's the matter?" Lynnette kept teasing. "Upset because old man Brayden still won't accept you?" The other three kept sharing silent laughs with each other.
Maxwell kept growling, and got to his feet. "I'm warning you, Lynnette!" Maxwell growled even louder, showing his canines.
Lynnette growled at Maxwell, she saw his fangs showing at her. "Oh, so is that a challenge?" Lynnette growled. "Well, a challenge it is!" Lynnette lunged at Maxwell, sinking her deadly fangs into his neck.
Maxwell yelped and shook Lynnette off easily. He also caught everyone's attention, who gathered around, and began to watch the small battle.
Lynnette growled at Maxwell, and lunged at him again. Maxwell dodged, and grabbed her by the foot, pinning her easily onto her back in the cold white powder. He shook her leg violently, making it bleed.
Lynnette kicked Maxwell in the face, making him loose grip, and sank her teeth into his shoulders.
Maxwell bit Lynnette again, making her cry in pain, but this time she didn't let go. "STOP!" Maxwell quickly let go of Lynnette and looked as the wolf he was hunting with last time, which was Brayden that Lynnette called an old man, walked up to them both.
He glared down at them both. "Lynnette, be nice to Maxwell, alright? I saw your behavior towards him and I'm not liking it one bit."
"But-"
"No buts!"
Lynnette growled with frustration and padded away angrily, with her closest friends following close behind.
Brayden glared after Lynnette. He sighed and looked softly down upon Maxwell. "Are you alright, Max?" he asked softly.
Max blinked with surprise. Brayden had never been this kind of him before. He just nodded slowly.
Brayden just nodded back and walked away.
The crowd stared after Brayden, a little confused, a little surprised, and then left. Ashlee stayed though.
She ran up to Maxwell. "Are you alright, Max?" she asked, a little.
"I'll be fine," Maxwell smiled softly to her.
Ashlee sighed with relief. She nodded also, and padded away.
Maxwell just kept smiling after Ashlee and Brayden. He was already starting to fit into the pack, but he knew that it wasn't going to stay good forever, and he would still have to more trust. In fact, Maxwell's only been in the pack for only a week, so he'll need another week or two to see if he really was ment for the pack.
"That was very brave of you to stand up to Lynnette this morning, Max."
"Eh, it wasn't a big deal. She was pretty easy to take down. And she hit one of my nerves, and trust me, you don't like me when someone has touched one of my nerves."
Maxwell and Ashlee, Brayden's daughter, were sitting out on a deck in the pack territory, staring out at the lake in front of them. Ashlee looked up at the young, but strong male.
"Weren't you suppose to do your hunting lesson again with my dad this afternoon?"Ashlee asked, blinking a little.
Max's ears pricked. "Darn it, I forgot! Thank's for reminding me, Ashlee!" he yelped, getting up quickly and running off away from the lake and dock, and towards the woods.
"Hey, it's what friends do," Ashlee muttered to herself with a shrug, and walked slowly in the direction Maxwell went.
Maxwell wasn't looking to where he was running, and accidently bumped into smoething big. He looked up and saw Brayden looking down at me, a little annoyed. He smiled and wagged his tail friendly but nervously like.
"Maxwell, didn't I tell this morning that we would try again later at this time?" Brayden asked in a serious tone, raising a brow at the young border collie male.
Maxwell bit his lip. "Well, you didn't tell me what time, but you told me what we were going to do later," he mumbled.
Brayden growled quietly to himself, knowing that Maxwell was right. Brayden hated being wrong though, but he also couldn't think of an excuse to make him smarter than Maxwell. "Well, anyways, let's go," he also mumbled, turning and walking out of the campsite, with Maxwell following.
He led him and himself far away from the pack territory, until they came to an open meadow full of deer and/or elk. They both hid in some bushes together.
"Alright, Maxwell, you got that way, and I'll go the other way. And when you see me flick my tail, that's the sign to pounce in for the kill," Brayden told Maxwell in the best description he could.
Maxwell looked back at Brayden. "Are you sure this is a good idea that only two of us are going to do this?" he asked. "Don't we need more pack members to help?"
"Do you want to complete your hunting test so I don't have to bug you all day?"
Maxwell stared at Brayden with a blank expression.
Brayden stared right back at him. "You know what? Change of plans? We'll just stay here, and do what I do. Undstand?" Brayden growled at Maxwell.
Max just rolled his eyes. "Yeah, sure," he mumbled, and watched every action Brayden did.
Brayden crouched. Maxwell crouched. They waited for a long time. He howled loudly, to scare the deer. The deer began to run away. Brayden ran far ahead of them through the bushes, along with Maxwell. They waited in some other bushes, and waited for the deer to come. Before they could go pass them, both ran out and began to nip at their heels, growling and barking.
They were going for the largest buck. It bucked and kicked it's hooves at them, but they were both too swift for the buck to catch them, either they dodged or jumped aside.
Brayden went on the right side of the buck, getting it's attention, while Maxwell went behind it. Max quickly grabbed the deer's hoof, making it loose balance and fall.
Brayden jumped onto the buck and grabbed it's neck and squeezing it hard, making difficult for he young buck to breath as it's family ran and left him behind. It struggled to get away from Brayden's strong grip. It quickly lost air, and it went limp under Brayden's mighty jaws.
Brayden sighed with relief and let go of the buck's neck. He looked over at Maxwell. "There, you learnt your lesson," said Brayden, softly. "Now help me bring this back to the pack."
Maxwell nodded and grabbed the buck's legs while Brayden carried it by the neck, and they both carried it back to the camp ground.
Once they got there, they laid it in Brayden's den, and Brayden called everyone over for a small meeting.
Once everyone gathered, Brayden began to speak, loud and clear. "See this?" Brayden asked, pointing towards the buck he and Max had killed. Everyone stared, ears pricked. "This was the largest buck we had killed in five years, it's much more bigger than all the others we caught all the time, and you know who killed it?" Everyone looked at each then just shrugged and murmured a little.
Brayden sighed. "It was Maxwell, or Max, and he killed this all by himself." Everyone turned their attention on Max, who looked a little nervous, and then looked at Brayden, who had a thinking expression. "Hm. A dog. Killing a buck larger than a wolf can kill. That seems pretty brave. And that teaches not to mess with him either, or he'll rip your throat out." Brayden stared hard as everyone shivered a little.
Brayden sighed again and spoke softer. "All I'm saying, is that you shouldn't be picking on Max all because of his breed. He's been making the pack stronger everyday by himself, and we should be thankful for that." Brayden looked at all of the wolves reactions, which was just silence and a expressionless stares.
"Alright, everyone. You can eat now." Brayden got up and began to leave. All the wolves greedily and quickly ran over to the large buck, and started to 'wolf' down their food hungrily.
Maxwell watched for a couple of seconds, not too hungry, until he heard his tummy growl. Maxwell groaned embarrassly when everyone looked up at him. He sighed when everyone ignored him again, and went back to eating.
Maxwell really wanted to eat, but he was frightened that wolves would try to bully him and steal his food. He laid down with his head on his paws, and he heaved a sad sigh.
Max's ears pricked when he saw Ashlee lookde up at him from the Highledge in the cave, and flicked her tail, which ment she was calling him over to join, and she would promise that she wouldn't let anyone bug you.
Maxwell smiled softly, wagging his tail slowly, and he jumped off of the Highledge and joined her. "Thanks, Ashlee," Maxwell smiled, nuzzling her in a friendly way. "Your a good friend."
Ashlee shrugged. "No problemo, it's what friends do for one another," Ashlee laughed softly.
Maxwell smiled. Good o' Ashlee, Maxwell thought. Always there
for her friends with everything. Maxwell sighed, and started to eat with her. He was really starting to get the hang of pack life now.
"Hey, Maxwell! Maxwell! Get up, lazy head, we need to go now!"
Max groaned, and opened his eyes, looking up to a gray male wolf. Max yawned rudely in his face, but didn't apologize. "What is it now, Dewayne?" Max asked lazily, going to fall back asleep if it wasn't that important. Max had a long night last night. It was full moon, and him and all the rest of the pack had to keep howling at the moon at 3:00 a.m, which was why he still wanted to sleep.
"Brayden is making a hunting party to go get some caribou. He announced that you were going to be in it," Dewayne replied, looking a little irritated by Maxwell's laziness.
Maxwell's ears pricked, and he wagged his tail, smiling brightly. He jumped up to his feet quickly with excitement. "Well, what are we waiting for, Dewayne! Let's get hunting!" Maxwell rushed out of the den, leaving Dewayne behind. He was really happy about being in the hunting party, because it was his first time being in the hunting party group, and hunting was his favorite hobby. Then he could show the pack that they could trust him too, and he really was a wolf inside!
Max ran out to a group of wolves, that were waiting for him and Dewayne. They both ran over to meet the group, and then they both began to leave their camp.
Max made it to a field, or meadow, full of bushes surrounding it, and caribou, eating grass in the open. Max and his pack hid in some bushes.
"Okay," a large black wolf began, who was the one that was leading the small group. "When I flick my tail, that's the signal to move out! And try to kill the biggest one."
Everyone nodded, and began to wait patiently.
Maxwell watched the black male's tail. He was panting with excitement. But as soon as you heard thunderous hooves pounding the ground, and the black wolf was going to flick his tail, a surprise was waiting for them.
One of the wolves, a female with golden pelt's eyes went huge. "What tha --- ?" Everyone gasped, as they heard more pounding hooves, but more like paws. They watched as unknown wolves passed them by, killing all of their caribou and chasing them around.
It was a rival pack of Maxwell and the Blue pack. Their rival pack was called the Red pack, and they were stealing Blue pack's prey!
"Hey!" the large black wolf yelled. "What are you doing?!"
One wolf from the other pack stopped, and glared over at the large black wolf, Maxwell, and the rest of Blue Pack. "Hunting, what does it look like?!" the other wolf snapped, and continued to help his pack kill their prey.
Max growled. The other wolf hit hsi nerve, badly, and he felt like killing and tearing one of his pack's rival apart.
The female with the gold pelt snarled angrily, and lunged at one of the rival wolves, and began to shred him.
The black male wolf growled, and looked at his fellow pack mates and Max. "Attack!" he ordered. He turned towards Red Pack, and charged, with Max and the other Blue Pack wolves following close behind.
Max jumped at a golden male wolf, but his rival caught site of him fast and quickly moved out of the way making Max hit the ground hard. Then the male wolf jumped on Maxwell's back and bit into his neck. Maxwell bucked the wolf off, making him hit the ground harder than he made Max did, which made the wolf cry loudly in pain, and wince. The wolf sure looked angry though. He yelled loudly and ran at Max. Maxwell dodged his attack. The wolf ran at him again, and he dodged his attack again.
"Hold still, I need to kill you!" the wolf snapped. Max didn't listen though. His eyes went really huge though when the wolf finally grabbed him by the neck. The wolf through him to the ground and held his grip tight. Maxwell struggled to get out. He couldn't though, and he knew it must've been his time now.
This is it, Max thought. This your final minute of saying good bye and leaving this cruel world...
Max closed his eyes and waited for himself to stop breathing, when he heard a loud howl, and felt something let go of him. He peeked one eye open, and saw all of the dogs in opposite directions, staring at something with there jaws open.
Chapter Two
He got up, and shook his pelt, opening his eyes. He looked up and saw Brayden glaring down upon them, then looking up at something. Max looked in his direction, and saw a very large black wolf staring right back at Blue pack and Brayden.
Max shivered at the size of this wolf. It was almost the size of a tiger! It smelt of Red pack sent too. She must be Red pack leader, Max guessed, still holding the powerful gaze.
"Lori, what is the meaning of this!" Brayden snarled. "Doesn't your pack know tihs is Blue pack's hunting grounds!"
"We have no choice, Brayden," Lori snarled back. "Our hunting grounds are scarce with food, and you've got more and healthier food, so I guess we'll have to hunt here."
"That's not our problem!" Dewayne, who was standing next to Maxwell growled. "All because you don't have any food in your territory doesn't mean you can go on someone else's turf and steal prey. You just ruined the perfect hunt for our rookie here!"
Maxwell gulped, when Dewayne pointed to him, and Lori looked directly at him. Oh no, what will he think of us! Maxwell thought. I knew I wasn't right to live here, all I do is just make the pack more embarrassed everyday...
Lori smirked and began to laugh. "Oh my gosh, Brayden, your as dumb as I thought!" She laughed harder. Her pack began to laugh along with her. Lori shushed the pack, and kept smiling at Brayden. "You accepted this young mutt into the pack!" The black male who was leading the hunting party stepped up. "He's not a dumb mutt, Lori," the male spoke up to him. "He's a Border Collie, a wolf killer!" Everyone in Red pack gasped, and Lori growled. "What!" Lori yelped out loudly. "What kind of nonsense is this!" Brayden glared at Lori. "Yes, just as Dara said, this is a wolf killer, and if any pack ever messes with us, we will use him," Brayden beamed proudly. "And I won't be ashamed of anyone who thinks I'm dumb for letting a 'dumb mutt' that you speak of in my pack. It's my choice, not any of yours, and this is what I chose. Besides, we had to look for more pack members before we died, and that was all my daughter, Ashlee could find, and I'm actually happy she found him." Max stared up at Brayden in surprise. He blinked at him, and didn't smile. Brayden didn't even look at him either, and wasn't smiling at all. Brayden kept holding his gaze on Lori.
Lori glared right back at Brayden. "You'll pay for what you've done, Brayden. Not helping us." Lori turned to her pack, and ordered them to follow her, and leave the prey. Red pack nodded quickly, and they rushed to the other side of the field to a different forest. Blue pack began to pant with tiredness, as they picked up the dead caribou their rivals killed 'for them', and began to follow Brayden back to camp. Once they got there, Maxwell looked up as he saw Ashlee, and another wolf, a male, running right beside her. "Are you alright, Maxwell!" Ashlee yelped, nuzzling him in a friendly, worried way. "Cristian & I were so worried!" Max looked at Cristian, and back at Ashlee. "Don't worry, Ashlee, I'm alright. Tell you mate I am too." Ashlee rolled her eyes and pulled away from Maxwell. "Max, for the third time, Cristian's my brother," she laughed softly. Max smiled, wagging his tail. "Oh, sorry. I wonder why I keep thinking he's your mate." He winked at Cristian. "It's alright, Maxwell. I don't mind." Cristian just wagged his tail and smiled warmly at Max. Maxwell just nodded slowly, still smiling at him too. He looked over at Ashlee, who also smiled at him, and then walked away from her brother. She stopped and looked at Max, and flicked her tail for him to join. Max wagged his tail more, and ran over to Cristian & Ashlee, and they went for a small walk. "C'mon, Maxwell, jump!" "But I don't want to! I'm too scared!" "C'mon, chicken! Water doesn't bite!" Maxwell looked irritated at Cristian & Ashlee, who were swimming around in the lake Max and Ashlee went to every day. "Water doesn't bite, Ashlee. You drowned in it, quit trying to make me look dumb." "Awe, Maxwell, c'mon!" Cristian encouraged. "The water's not too deep if your afraid of drowning, so that means you can't drown in it." Max whimpered and lowered his ears. He turned around and walked away. Ashlee and Cristian looked surprise. They looked at each other. They're ears pricked when they heard large padding, and they looked up. Max quickly jumped into the water, making a large wave crash over Ashlee and her younger brother. Max laughed at both of them as they began to pout. "Well chickens don't do that, do they, Cristian?" Maxwell laughed. Cristian just glared at him and spat some water out that was still in his mouth. Ashlee just laughed and began to splash her two male friends. Max and Cristian began to splash Ashlee back, and they began to have a water fight. Maxwell's ears pricked, when he heard padding outside. He looked up and saw Brayden sitting down on the dry land and staring down at them. "Max," Brayden began. "It's time for you training." Maxwell crawled out and walked over to Brayden. "Training for what?" Maxwell asked. "I thought I was done." Brayden raised a brow. "You got to train for your fighting." Maxwell's ears pricked. "Oh!" Maxwell nodded. "Okay." "Can we watch too, dad?" Ashlee asked, crawling out of the pool with Cristian crawling after her. "Sure," her father nodded. "We can use some company, or else it would have only been the two of us alone." Brayden smiled softly. He, Max, Cristian, & Ashlee got up, and they began to walk somewhere far from the lake and from the pack's camp. Brayden, Max, Ashlee, & Cristian finally found a spot, and Brayden & Maxwell faced each other. "Alright, Cristian & I thought this up, like father and son, and this is what we are going to teach you first." Brayden looked at his son. "Son, would you like to be my example?" Brayden asked, smiling warmly. Cristian nodded. "My pleasure!" They both began to face each other. Brayden looked at Maxwell, and winked. "Now watch closely." Brayden leaped into the air, twisting as he landed so that he was facing his opponent. He managed to land a blow on Cristian's haunches before he scrambled around to face him. Cristian sprang at him, and Brayden launched himself forward, slipping underneath his with his belly brushing the ground. Hooking his hind legs out from under him, he planted his forepaws on Cristian's bell as he rolled over. Brayden got up and looked over at Maxwell. "Now you try with me!" he barked. Max gulped in nervousness. He was a little frightened that he would screw up, or maybe hurt him bad, but if that's what his leader wanted, then that's what he was going to get. Before Max could start his try, a bloody female came out of the bushes near them, panting, and almost about to break into tears from pain. "Orlaith!" Brayden gasped, running over to her and catching her before she culd fall. "What happened!" "Red pack," the female panted. "They attacked our camp! Follow me!" Orlaith turned around and began to limp in the direction, with the others following. All five made it to camp and saw one large group of wolves full of different scents, colors, and sizes, forming into a ball of fur. Cristian gasped, and jumped in, and also began to fight. Maxwell & Brayden also jumped in, leaving Ashlee & Orlaith, for Orlaith's injury and Ashlee's safety. It didn't take too long until the Red pack started to run away, yelping with their tail between their legs. All of Blue pack began to howl and cry with joy. Maxwell walked over to Ashlee, and licked her forehead in a friendly way. "Are you alright, Ashlee?" Maxwell asked softly, worried about her. Ashlee smiled warmly at Maxwell. "I'll be alright, I'm not hurt," she said softly, and nuzzled him. Max's muscles tensed, and he stood very still. This wasn't a friendly nuzzle, it was much more... Max just waited for Ashlee to finish, and then he followed Brayden into Blue pack's den, Ashlee & Cristian side by side with each other. "Maxwell? Max? Are you up?" Max's eye lids slowly opened, and he looked up, seeing Ashlee standing over him. He raised a brow at her, and yawned. "What is it, Ashlee?" he asked. "It's 2:00 a.m in the morning..." Ashlee blushed. "Well, Maxwell, I need to talk to you... alone... about something..." Maxwell kept his one brow raised and the other brow down. "How come you can just talk to someone else about it?" Max grumbled, his ears twitching, staring at Ashlee serious. Ashlee kept blushing. "I can't, or they'll laugh at me, and it's really none of their business until I talk to you about it first..." Max sighed, and got up. "Alright, let's go to the lake and talk about it then..." He yawned again, and began to lead Ashlee out of the den and into the woods. It was really quiet, and all you could here was crickets chirping and owls hooting. It kind of spooked Max out, like something was going to come out and grab him and Ashlee and shred them to bits. He caught a shiver in his spine while he thought of that. They sat down at the dock of the lake once they got their, and Maxwell faced Ashlee. "So," he yawned again. "What is it you have to tell me?" Ashlee sat down beside Maxwell. She looked at him, and then looked away, blushing again. "Well," she began. "There's someone I like in the pack, but I'm scared that he'll hurt me..." she sighed. Maxwell's ears twitched. "Well, I'm not an expert on love, but if someone liked me, I'd like if they would just say it out loud and not ask questions." Ashlee cracked a smile. "Oh... really?" she asked. "Because... I think..." Ashlee paused, her ears twitching too. She took a deep breath. "Because I love you..." she said so quietly, Maxwell had a hard time of hearing. Maxwell raised a brow at Ashlee. "Excuse me?" he asked. "I couldn't here you." Ashlee was sweating now. She opened her mouth to speak, but instead of saying something, she leaned over onto Maxwell and gave him a kiss on the lips. Max's eyes went huge.
Chapter Three
Max and Ashlee's kiss lasted for a long time, and Max looked super surprised and shocked about his situation. He was very confused about what was happening right now.
It seemed to him, that it felt so wrong to be kissing his own best friend, but then it felt so right...
Ashlee kept smiling when felt Maxwell get in a comfortable position and kiss her back.
They're lips parted, and they both stared into each other's eyes. They both blushed, and looked away from each other.
"Wow... this is kind of... awkward..." Max said quietly.
"Yeah..." Ashlee muttered back, lowering her ears.
Max looked at Ashlee again, and licked her on the cheek.
Ashlee smiled softly and nuzzled Max lovingly, and her tail began to wag excitedly and happily when Max nuzzled her back.
Ashlee looked up at Max, and sighed. "So let's say we head back to the cave?" she asked softly, wagging her tail.
Max shrugged. "Sure, I guess..." he said slowly, his ears twitching.
Ashlee kept smiling, and she rubbed noses with Maxwell. "I love you," she said sweetly with a cute grin. Maxwell blushed and rubbed his nose against her's also. "I love you too, Ashlee."
Maxwell & Ashlee got up, and they walked side by side like mates together, back to the den. Max and Ashlee knew that they're relationship was going to give them give dreams, as long as they didn't leave each other.
Once they got back to the den, before going inside, Ashlee faced Maxwell and nuzzled him again. "Promise you won't leave me, Max?" she asked, looking at him with sweet souled eyes.
Maxwell stared into those innocent, beautiful golden brown and blue eyes of hers, and smiled warmly. "I promise, love," he replied softly, nuzzling her again.
They both stared into each others eyes for a couple of seconds in silence, then they went into the cave and rested themselves beside each other away from the other wolves. They snuggled and licked and cuddled each other for a while, and then they quickly fell asleep, into good dreams...
"Alright, Max. I have been training you how to fight for two weeks. Now it's your turn to show me some moves you have."
Maxwell gulped, and nodded slowly. He was really nervous, hoping that his collie instincts wouldn't kick in and he actually wouldn't kill Brayden. He looked to his side and saw Ashlee, Lynnette & her three closest friends behind her, Dewayne, Dara, Cristian, Orlaith, and two random wolves sit down, forming a circle around him and Brayden, and watching closely. The other pack members were busy hunting & scouting, so these were the wolves that could watch.
Max looked over at Brayden one more time. He gulped one more time, and then leapt into the air and bit Brayden in the face.
Brayden went to go grab for Max's throat, but Maxwell dodged the attack and bit into Brayden instead. Brayden and slipped out of Maxwell's grip. He snapped at his neck again, and got it before Max could dodge again. Brayden lifted him into the air, and threw him to the ground with a loud and painful thud. Everyone stared in amazement.
Maxwell yelped, and rose to his feet, wincing with pain. He growled at Brayden, his eyes blood shot. He charged at Brayden and hit him in the side harder than he dropped him, knocking him over with a sharp yelp.
Maxwell's eyes went huge and he jumped back, thinking that he had killed him when Brayden wasn't moving at all. He was surprised when he saw Brayden rise to his feet.
Brayden stared hard at Maxwell, but his eyes softened, and he sighed. "You have fought well," he praised. "Your training is finished."
Maxwell smiled and wagged his tail. Dewayne, Cristian, Ashlee, Orlaith, & Brayden left, except Lynnette and her trio. Maxwell growled as all four approuched. "What do you want now!" he snapped. "You wanna fight too!"
Lynnette's ears twitched, but she spoke. "You fight very well for a mutt," she mumbled quietly. "We wanted to congratulate you for being an official member of the pack, finishing all of your training and all.
One of Lynnette's henchmen spoke. "Your a better fighter than Brayden is, I say!" He paused, and then blushed. "Oh, sorry. I hope Brayden didn't here that..."
Maxwell smiled warmly. "It's alright, Kelvin. I bet he wouldn't mind, since I think he's proud of me too," Maxwell puffed his chest out with pride. He also blushed and stopped with embarrassment. "I'm not trying to brag or anything, if that's what you guys are thinking..." Maxwell chuckled softly.
Lynnette just kept smiling. "It's alright, Maxwell," she laughed softly. She faced Kelvin and her two other friends. "Come on Kelvin, Amaya, Julie. Let's go!" Lynnette, Kelvin, and the other two wolves, Amaya & Julie, both females, then left.
Maxwell just kept smiling. Now he knew that he really did belong to this pack...
Maxwell's dreams all of a sudden disappeared, when he jerked awake to the snapping of a twig. He looked around and saw the whole pack asleep. It must be my imagination... thought Maxwell. He laid back down, and went to fall asleep, but something come to the corner of his eyes.
Maxwell looked up, and looked outside. He got a chill down his spine. He knew nothing could be wrong though. It was too cold and late for someone to be out at this time. When Max looked outside, he saw that it was a blizzard and pitch black, and he figured that it wouldn't go away until the next morning. It sure made him freeze to death though. He was already feeling numb. He froze and his muzzle's tensed when he suddenly saw a brownish-tan figure walking through the blizzard, and walking into the den, looking around at the other wolves sleeping. It wasn't a wolf from there pack, or any other pack he at least knew.
Maxwell could tell that it was a female by it's sweet scent. It was much bigger than he was, but Max guess that this female wolf was still around the same age as him.
The brown and tan female studied all of the wolves in the pack for a moment, then she finally began to approuch him cautiously. Max's hackles rose as he curled around Ashlee, ready to protect her. The brown female jumped back and stared with wide and frightened eyes at me.
"Stay away from my mate, or I'll kill you!" Max threatened.
The brown female took a step back. "Sorry, I didn't... know... I wasn't going to hurt her..."
Max stood to his feet, and gave a hard stare at the female. "What pack are you from, and what's your business here?" Max dared to ask.
The brown female lowered her ears, and she looked sad. "I... I don't have a pack..." She paused. "I'm a loner, and I hate it..."
Max's ears pricked, and then they lowered. "That must feel bad..." he muttered. "I felt like that once, but then things started to get better. Maybe it'll turn that way for you too."
The female nodded. She looked up at Max, and they both stared into each other's eyes for a long time. The female finally shook her head. "I-I got to g-go!" The female turned and fleed out of the cave and deep into the woods.
Maxwell was about to follow her, but he knew that wouldn't do anything. Maxwell laid back down and curled up beside Ashlee.
Max had many questions in his head. Why was that wolf here? Did she ever have a pack before? If she did, what happened to it? And why was he even that curious about her...
Maxwell woke up before everyone, probably because it was morning, but it was still dark.
He decided to hunt for the pack, but only rabbits for now. He got up and padded outside the den. It was turning light out, and he knew that Blue pack would wake up soon and worry about where he had run off to.
He suddenly spotted a rabbit, and began to stalk it silently. His ears pricked when he heard a snap. The rabbit also heard it and ran off quickly into a hole. Maxwell looked down and saw that he had stepped on a twig and made it snap. He growled angrily, and snorted in disgust. Dumb brain! he thought to himself.
His ears pricked again when he smelt a familiar scent. Max followed the scent to where it led to, and he was surprised to see the same female brown wolf he saw last night. "You again!" Maxwell growled. "What are you still doing here!"
The female frowned and stood up, being much more taller, but younger than Max. "Just leave me alone! I'll leave if you want! But it's going to be a lot of trouble to move with this deep cut in my leg, so be patient!" The female growled. She snorted at him, and turned around limping away.
Max was surprised to see a long and deep cut in her back right leg. Max sighed. "Look, I'm sorry, Miss..." Maxwell blushed at the thought that he hadn't known her name yet.
The female turned around and looked at Max. "Miss Angela," she muttered quietly. "Just call me Angela for now."
Max smiled. "Miss Angela, or just Angela," Max began. "If you'd like, I could take you back to my pack and heal you."
Angela smirked. "Like your pack would really take me in," she frowned again. "I'm too weak for them, and you..."
"But I can heal you, and make you stronger!" Maxwell begged. "Please, Angela, please! I really want to help!"
Angela sat down. "Why do you want me to come with you so badly, when you don't even know me? You can't trust a stranger that easily, pup."
Maxwell felt insulted. "Who are you calling pup!" He growled. "Your much more younger than I am!"
Angela rolled her eyes. "So," she shrugged. "Anyways, if you want to help me that bad, I might as well come, just to shut you up." She growled more.
Max just ignored her growling, and began to lead her into territory. Once they got back to camp, the wolves that were awake paused, and stared at Angela with interest. Some began to growl. Angela just ignored them though.
Both of them padded into the den and saw Dewayne & Orlaith, sitting beside Brayden. All three caught scent of Angela's, and they turned to look.
"Brayden," said Maxwell. "We have found an outsider in our territory, and she is not in any pack's at all. She says she's a loner, and she's terribly wounded also.
Brayden frowned and walked away from Dewayne & Orlaith. He began to smell her, and then looked at her wound. He looked up at Max. "Thank you, Max," he said softly. "You may leave now. Orlaith can take care of her."
Maxwell smiled, and wagged his tail. He turned around and padded out of the den. He sat down and looked around as everyone began to do their jobs again. Maxwell's ears pricked and he gulped, seeing Ashlee walk up to him, and she didn't look happy.
"Who was that, Max?" Ashlee asked harshly.
"Relax, Ashlee! She's only another female, and she was hurt," Max tried to explain.
Ashlee growled again. "So you help her? Would you do that for me too!"
"Ashlee your over reacting, of course I would never cheat on you. Geez, I only met her today!" Maxwell snapped, irritated by her pouting
Ashlee began to calm down, and took deep breaths. "I'm sorry..." she sighed. "I just remember our promise we made two days ago though, that you would never leave me. And I really want you to keep that." Ashlee lowered her ears.
Max nuzzled her. "Of course I wouldn't leave you, you know that..."
Ashlee nodded, slowly. She sighed again. "I should go do my duties again," she mumbled and walked away.
Max stared after her. He began to think again. Why was Ashlee so afraid of Max leaving her for Angela? He barely knew her since last night! Well, Angela was cute and all... No, Max! Don't think like that! You love Ashlee, not Angela! Max felt a chill go up his spine. He shivered at the feeling. Was he really falling for someone else already, just in one day? I hope not...
Chapter Four
Maxwell sat on a mountain in the pack territory. He was looking down on his past life. Below the mountain, a long miles away from his location, he could see two border collies, male & female, and their master, herding sheep into their pens to get their coats shaved. He was beginning to miss his own older, but he tried not to and would yell at himself in his thoughts to look towards the future and turn his back on the past. It was so hard for him though...
Brayden was sitting right behind Maxwell. He sighed. "Max, what are you staring at anyways, and why did you want to bring me with you?" he mumbled, yawning tiredly. It was dawn, and the sun was just rising lots.
"Come here, and I'll show," Maxwell replied, flicking his tail for Brayden to come a little closer, until he was right beside him. "See those two dogs down there?" he asked Brayden, pointing towards the two collies with the sheep and man. "They're doing something that sheepdogs usually do, but not at night, called herding."
Brayden stared down at those to dogs. He tried to not look interested, but he was very curious about the farm dog's jobs. He raised a brow and looked up at Max. "Hurting?" he asked.
Max laughed softly. "No, not hurting, Brayden! Herding!"
Brayden shook his pelt and tilted his head. "Oh, I thought you said hurting, not herding," Brayden mumbled, his ears twitching.
Max sighed, smiling softly, and looked back at the two young collies. "Yeah..."
Brayden frowned at Max. "You miss home, don't you?" he asked.
"Well, a little," Max muttered back.
Brayden sighed. "Max, it's time to let go of the past, and look towards the future."
"I know," Max replied. "It's just so hard. I've never been so wild before, and it feels so good, yet it feels so wrong also. And dogs are man's best friend, why aren't wolves that way?"
"Man thinks we're beasts, so they kill us for no reason. We don't mean them harm, and we don't want to kill them, but we will if we have to," said Brayden. "Well, at least that's how I feel..."
Max nodded slowly. "Yeah, I understand..." he muttered, his ears twitching. He looked back to the dogs one more time, and then followed Brayden back to the pack territory when they left.
The day went by very quickly. First Max went hunting, and they came back with four deers, then they went for a scout, but nothing was there. A fox tried to steal their food in their territory, and they had to chase it out.
It was now night, and Maxwell & Ashlee were in a corner, snuggling with each other.
"Max?" she asked softly, looking up at her mate. "What was your life like before you joined us?"
Max thought. "Well, it was a good life. I had two loving parents, five siblings, and a wonderful home. I was suddenly given away to another human, but that's what happened to every single puppy, un like your pack. And I'm not sure why if your asking. Anyways, I was moved to a farm called Fairbanks to guard the sheep and herd them into pens so theycould get their fur cut. And I was trained to kill any wolf that got in my way. Until I met you..." Max smirked.
Ashlee shivered. "How many wolves did you kill?" she asked curiously, her ears twitching lightly.
"Well, maybe about two or three, not too much..." Max thougth for a moment. "What about your past life?"
Ashlee sighed. "It was a boring life. I got bossed around by my father most of the time to do this and that, until you came. He's probably just scared to be rude in front of you so you don't get angry and kill him..."
Max frowned for a moment, and then he yawned. "Well, I'm gonna hit the hay, so good night..." he whispered.
"Good night, Maxwell," Ashlee said softly, laying her head on her front paws and falling asleep quickly.
Max's fur prickled when he felt eyes burning into his skin. He opened one eye and saw Angela staring at him. He shivered and just ignored it. Why was he still thinking about her? And why was she staring at him all the time? Did she feel the same way he does for her?
Max growled irritated. No, I said! Ashlee's the one for me! He couldn't help it for some reason though. He wished he didn't believe it, but he had to face the truth. He didn't love Ashlee, it was someone else...
"Max, wake up!"
Max opened his eyes and saw Orlaith & Dewayne looking at him dead serious. He yawned. "What is it, guys?" he asked, stretching his legs out.
"No time for chit-chat," Dewayne growled. "We have to go now! I'll explain later." Dewayne & Orlaith turned around, and headed for the entrance of the den.
Max's ears pricked. He looked around the den also, and saw everything was empty and he was the only one inside. He knew something out there was dead serious, and he didn't come in time, something bad would happen.
He got up and ran after Orlaith & Dewayne. He saw that they were the only three together. "Why can't you just tell me while we're running!" Maxwell barked after them.
Before Dewayne could reply, there was a loud bang, and he collapsed in the snow.
"Dewayne!"
Dewayne winced with pain. He took a look at his leg, and saw it was bleeding. "Crap..." he thought out loud. He looked and saw men with long rifles, walking towards the three wolves. He began to pant with worry, and he looked at Orlaith & Max.
"Maxwell, Orlaith, run!" Dewayne cried.
"No!" Orlaith cried. "I'm not going to leave my friend to die!"
Dewayne growled. "Just go, Orlaith! I don't want them to hurt you!"
Orlaith growled. "When you get hurt, I get hurt, and that means that I love you, and I will never let anyone hurt you!"
Maxwell blinked in surprise at Orlaith & Dewayne. He never knew they were that close. He winced when he saw Dewayne's expression, which was shocked and surprised. He looked at Orlaith. "Don't worry, Orlaith," he said softly. "I'll carry him, you go now."
Orlaith nodded, and turned around, running off.
Max looked at Dewayne, and then got him onto his back, and began to run off. It took a while for them to get out of the forest. They jumped over logs, dodged other trees and shots from the hunters and their rifles, until they finally reached the end of the forest, and the humans decided to give up.
Max panted, and set Dewayne down. "Where are the others?" Maxwell asked.
"There behind the waterfall near here," Dewayne replied.
Maxwell replied and began to walk around the edge of the woods. He paused, his ears twitching, when he saw the waterfall Dewayne had been talking about. Maxwell walked up to the waterfall, and walked right past through it.
He shook his pelt and looked around, seeing he was in another den, with Blue Pack waiting for him. "Guys, what's going on?" Max asked, laying Dewayne down.
"Hunters invaded, and all of us ran, but we forgot about you so we sent Orlaith & Dewayne to fetch you," Dara growled softly.
Max nodded. He laid Dewayne down when he saw Ashlee rush over to him. Ashlee began to nuzzle and lick him all over. "Max, are you alright!" she asked worriedly.
"Don't worry, I'm fine, Ashlee," Max smiled warmly, and nuzzled her back. He peeked over at Angela, who was watching them both. It was hard to read her expression though. It seemed like she didn't care, but he wondered why she'd just stare at them.
"How long will be staying here?" Amaya asked, she and the other wolves looked over to Brayden.
Brayden sat down and thought. "I'm not sure. We might stay here forever if the hunters won't leave us alone," Brayden sighed.
All of the wolves looked at each other with worry, and anger, and confusion, and other expressions, that didn't look happy at all, like maybe even sad.
"Then where are we going to hunt and get our food!" Julie asked, with panic in her tone.
Brayden sighed again. "Well, like it or not, no discussion, I guess we'll have to hunt fish for now. At least we won't have to walk such a long way since we live right beside the river..."
All the wolves didn't look too pleased, but they knew that they couldn't argue with the alpha, and knew if that's what they had to do to survive, it was what they had to do.
Brayden looked outside of the cave, making it a little blurry to see since the cave was behind the water, and saw it was getting dark. "It's getting late now. We should all get a good rest," Brayden suggested, walking over to a spot in the cave, and laying down and resting his head on his paws, quickly falling asleep. Everyone & Maxwell did the same.
Maxwell was thinking about the cave. He wasn't use to a new home, but he knew it was for the best, and he would do the same as Brayden. He sighed. This is going to be a long night...
'But, Brayden -'
'No buts! You have broken my daughter's heart, and you will be banished from this pack!'
Max looked around in shock and fright, seeing his own pack surround him and growl and bark at him. Max growled at them and began to bark back, trying to defend himself.
One wolf, Dara, attacked his back while Lynnette, the other wolf,
attacked him by the throat. Max shook them off, but all of the
other wolves began to attack.
Max shrieked with pain, panicing as he could smell blood, and could feel his legs and back being torn open. His world began to go black.
Maxwell woke up with a start, panting. He looked around, and saw that he was still in his own cave. Max felt like crying, because of his nightmare, but he didn't want to wake anyone up. He looked at all of the other wolves sleeping, and noticed that one wolf was missing.
Angela!
Maxwell jumped to his feet quickly, and rushed out of the den. He stopped when he saw a lonely wolf figure hitting and splashing her paw into the water. Max walked closer to her.
"Angela...?" Max asked in a quiet tone. He froze when her ice blue eyes stared at him, with no emotion.
"What do you want, Max?" Angela sighed.
"I... I just wanted to see what you were doing. I had a nightmare, and I couldn't go back to sleep," Max replied.
"Oh," Angela muttered. "Well, I'm just thinking about stuff, and staring at the lights in the sky."
Maxwell's ears pricked. What lights in the sky? he thought. He looked up, and saw the aurora boealis in the pitch black night. "Whoa..." he said quietly, half talking to himself. He padded up and sat down beside Angela. "I never noticed."
Angela smiled warmly. "Yeah... it's beautiful, isn't it?"
Max stared over at Angela. "Yeah... beautiful..."
Angela looked over to Max and saw him staring at her. "Uh... Max?" she asked. "What are you staring at?"
Max's eyes went huge, and he shook his head. "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean-"
"It's alright," Angela interrupted, putting on a sweet look. "I don't mind at all..." Angela leaned over and licked Max's cheek.
Max shivered both with excitement, and fright. Half of his mind was telling him to don't do it, and the other half was saying that it was alright, and it wouldn't do harm. Max was confused and unsure what to do. It felt so wrong, yet it felt so right.
But he couldn't stand looking into Angela's beautiful eyes and telling her off. He began to nuzzle her, and she nuzzled him back. Angela looked into Max's eyes, and Max looked into her eyes.
Angela stood up and began to run off, not into the den, but into part of the woods.
Max smiled, and chased after her.
Max slowly opened his eyes, seeing it was morning. His ears pricked and he sat straight up, seeing that he wasn't in the den. He looked beside him, and saw Angela sleeping right next to him.
Maxwell gasped loudly. "Oh no!" he yelped. He looked towards some bushes, and saw Dewayne & Dara come out. They both gasped as they saw the scene.
"Max! Angela! What the hell are you doing!" Dara growled.
Max gulped and shivered, Angela woke up, and gasped, seeing Dara & Dewayne. They both knew that they were in deep trouble.
Chapter Five
Max had his tail tucked in between his legs and his ears lowered, as he walked through the pack with Angela, Dara, & Dewayne, while the other wolves in the pack glared and sneered at them.
Max looked up, and his fur raised on end, when he saw Brayden waiting for them, and he didn't look too pleased.
"Max!" Brayden snapped, running him to him and smaking him across the face, making him cry out in pain. "What were you thinking! Cheating on my daughter like that!"
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to," Max whimpered.
"Nonsence!" Brayden snapped. "At first I thought you were loyal, but now I find that you are a piece of crap! A little bug that's waiting to be squished on the wall! You and Angela are banished from this pack!"
Max growled, not frightened anymore, and instead, angered. "Fine!" Max snapped. "I don't need this stupid pack! I guess you've got enough members now." Max snorted, and walked away. "Come on, Angela, let's go!" he called for her.
Angela glared at Brayden, and turned around, following Max, and ignoring all of the pack member's stares.
Once they were out of pack territory, and out in the open, they both stopped. Angela looked over at Maxwell. "So, where are we going to go now?"she asked.
Max sighed. "I'm not too sure..." He looked up at the sky and saw it began to darken quickly when it was still only morning. A snowflake fell from the ominous clouds, and landed on Max's nose, making him sneeze. Then thousands of more flakes began to fall.
Max looked over at Angela. "There's going to be a storm tonight though, so I think we should find shelter as soon as possible." Max looked forward, and began to lead the way, checking on his new mate to see if she was still close to him every five minutes.
Half hour later, they both found an adandoned den inside of a cliff, instead of a mountain, or behind a water fall, or a big rock in the forest. The cave was fairly small, but it could fit up to five wolves in their, so i was pretty much good space for Maxwell & Angela alone.
Angela laid down deep in the cliff cave, and sighed sadly, resting her head on her front paws, ears twitching.
Maxwell walked over to her and licked her between the ears. "Don't worry, it'll be alright," Maxwell said softly. "We can start a family together, and make our own pack," he suggested, smiling warmly.
Angela looked up at Maxwell, and sighed again. "Yeah... maybe..." she muttered.
Maxwell laid down beside her, and began to lick her cheek and nuzzle her. Angela did the same, and pretty soon they fell asleep, when it wasn't even night...
Two weeks had passed, and both Maxwell & Angela discovered that Angela was pregnant with puppies, and there would be only eight more weeks, until she gave birth.
Max wanted to be a good father, and he was always hunt for Angela six times a day, and would try to take good care of Angela so he could have healthy pups once they were born.
One day, Max was sitting outside in the den, until he heard cries of battle in the sky. His ears pricked forward and he looked towards a familiar wolf popping out of the bushes, bloodied and smuthered.
"Cristian!" he cried, running over to him. "What happened!" he asked, listening very good.
"It's Red Pack, they attacked, and we need your help!" Cristian cried, panting, and collapsing to the ground.
Max raised a brow at him, and snorted in disgust. "Why would I want to help you when you banished my mate and I?" Maxwell growled, turning his back on him.
"We were wrong to do that, Max, we actually need you!" Cristian panted. "Just please help us!"
Max sighed. "Okay, you stay here with Angela, and I'll go," Max growled, and ran off.
It didn't take him long to make it to the battle field. He jumped into the fight, and began to kill and throw away other wolves. Suddenly, something hit him, and he fell into the snow hard, and his whole world went black...
Maxwell's eye lids slowly began to open, his ears perked up, and he lifted his head off the ground, and looked around. He saw everyone from Blue Pack, all dead...
"We didn't make it, did we?"
Max's ears pricked, and he looked to his side, seeing Julie staring at him with her eyes opened. He sighed with relief, seeing he wasn't the only one alive. He gasped lightly.
"No... we didn't..."
He looked behind him, seeing two more wolves rise, Kelvin & Dewayne. Max & Julie got to their paws, and all four of them walked up to each other.
"I guess we're the only ones alive," Kelvin mumbled. "What are we going to do now?"
Max thought. "Maybe, you could live with Angela & I? Cristian is still alive, he's with Angela right now."
Dewayne sighed. "Thank goodness," he muttered. "Okay, if it's alright with Angela..."
"I'm pretty sure she'll let you..." Max muttered back, turning around and leading the other three away from the blood and gore in the fields.
It didn't take them long, until they arrived to a familiar den with Angela & Cristian waiting. All of the wolves approuched each other.
"Did we win!" Cristian asked anxiously, ears twitching.
Julie sighed. "No... no, we didn't..." she mumbled.
Cristian's face faded. He lowered his ears and whimpered.
"Don't worry, you can live with us," Maxwell suggested. "If it's alright with Angela..." Max looked over at the big female.
Angela nodded. "Sure, I guess. If Brayden isn't here," she mumbled, ears twitching.
Maxwell understood what she ment. If Brayden was still alive, and came with them, he would surely take over the pack, and maybe banish them again if they did one more mistake, and Max didn't want that to happen again.
"Don't worry, Brayden isn't here," said Dewayne, with a sigh, also knowing what she ment. He looked up a sky, and he blinked out a tear. "Orlaith..." he whispered softly.
Max whimpered, feeling sorry for Dewayne. He knew that Orlaith & Dewayne were in love, and he knew what it would of felt loosing a loved one, even though Max himself never lost one before.
"I don't think we should stay here any longer," Maxwell blurted. "If we do, Red Pack might come here and attack us again."
Everyone nodded, and began to move out, away from the den and out into the open snow.
Max looked over to Angela, and walked over to her. "Is it alright with you, Angela?" he asked softly, worried about her. He knew that she was pregnant, and that would make her slow and lazy along the way, and he didn't want to force her to come with them. And if she didn't want to go, he didn't want to go either.
Angela smiled sweetly. "Don't worry, Max," she giggled. "I can still walk." She got up and began to follow all of the other wolves.
Max smiled after her, and began to follow his friends. He frowned a little, thinking about how long it would take to find a new home. This is going to be a long journey... he thought, his ears twitching.
Maxwell and his new pack had traveled for five weeks, and they still hadn't found a home yet. Another blizzard was coming in, and it would be difficult, especially for Angela, since she was pregnant, and would get tired easily. She also only had three more weeks until the puppies were due.
Max paused and he looked up, also making his pack stop. There in front of him was a very large mountain. "Do you think we can find shelter there?" Max asked, looking at his pack.
The pack looked at each other, and studied the mountain for a while. They all finally nodded.
Max nodded also, and looked back up the mountain. It was very huge, and looked as if it would take two days to climb up. That wasn't going to stop Max though, and he and his other friends began to climb.
They had finally reached the mountain just in ten minutes, and they sheltered in a den in the mountain, near a waterfall, until the blizzard had finally ended two hours later.
Three weeks had passed, and it was finally time for Maxwell & Angela's puppies to be born.
Maxwell was pacing anxiously and nervously outside the cave, as he was listening to the painful cries. Everyone including him had to stay outside except for Julie, since males weren't aloud to watch the female give birth. Everytime he heard his mate cry, he wanted to go inside and comfort her, but he knew that he couldn't. His heart pounded, with worry, yet excitement also.
Pretty soon it all stopped, and Julie came back out, telling Maxwell to come inside. Max gulped and began to pad inside the cave. He looked over at Angela, and smiled warmly, running as quickly as he could over to her.
Max smiled and sat down beside Angela, looking down at six beautiful, healthy pups. "They're so beautiful," he said softly.
"Yeah... beautiful..."
Max looked up and saw Angela staring up at him instead of the pups teasingly.
Max laughed softly, and nuzzled her. Angela nuzzled him back, and looked down at the pups. "We need names..." she thought. "We have three females and three males. I can name the females, and you can name the males."
Maxwell shrugged. "Sure, I guess," he muttered. "Who names the pups first?"
Angela thought. "I'll name them first. Let's see," she began to think. She looked at the three females, that looked nothing like their father. The boys looked nothing like him either.
"How about I name this one..." She looked to a puppy that had the fur pf a bear, but not the colors of a bear, and then thought of the perfect name. "Ursula? It means 'Female Bear' in Scandinavian. Then the next one should be..." Angela turned her attention to a bright colored puppy, who looked as if it had a sweet, kind hearted soul. "Candy?" she thought out loud. "Meaning bright, and sweet?" She looked over at Maxwell to see if it was alright with him, and he nodded. Angela nodded back, and looked at the last female. "And that one could be... Daphne, meaning Laurel Tree in Greek, even though she doesn't look like a tree..." she muttered half to herself.
Maxwell wagged his tail. "Those are great names," he said softly. "Now is it my turn?" He smiled bigger when Angela nodded.
"Okay, here we go! The first one is... Josh? Just a random name, short for Joshua. And then next one is... Hamish? I know it's a Scottish name, but I don't know what it means. But that's what my great-great grandfather lived, in Scotland." Maxwell paused, and thought about the last one. "The last one should be... Rick? It means Brave Ruler in English, and it looks as if he will be the Brave Ruler of the pack when I pass away."
Angela looked pleased with the names. "Okay," she agreed. "Ursula, Candy, Daphne, Josh, Hamish & Rick it will be..."
Max smiled softly. "Rest. You had a hard day of work, you deserve it."
Angela nodded, and rested her head on her paws, quickly falling asleep.
Maxwell beamed proudly of his offspring and mate. He nuzzled her and his puppies, and then left the cave quickly. Out of his whole journey to becoming alpha, he found this was the best adventure he had ever went on in his life. He had earned the wolves trust, became a proud father of his first little of six puppies, he knew that everything was going to be okay.
